We address the problem of barrier tunneling in the two-dimensional T_3 lattice (dice lattice). In particular we focus on the low-energy, long-wavelength approximation for the Hamiltonian of the system, where the lattice can be described by a Dirac-like Hamiltonian associated with a pseudospin one. The enlarged pseudospin S = 1 (instead of S = 1/2 as for graphene) leads to an enhanced "super" Klein tunneling through rectangular electrostatic barriers. Our results are confirmed via numerical investigation of the tight-binding model of the lattice. For a uniform magnetic field, we discuss the Landau levels and we investigate the transparency of a rectangular magnetic barrier. We show that the latter can mainly be described by semiclassical orbits bending the particle trajectories, qualitatively similar as it is the case for graphene. This makes it possible to confine particles with magnetic barriers of sufficient width.
We investigate the tunneling of pseudospin-1 and pseudospin-3/2 quasiparticles through a barrier consisting of both electrostatic and vector potentials, existing uniformly in a finite region along the transmission axis. First, we find the tunneling coefficients, conductivities, and Fano factors in the absence of the vector potential. Then we repeat the calculations by switching on the relevant magnetic fields. The features show clear distinctions, which can be used to identify the type of semimetals, although both of them exhibit linear band-crossing points.
Modifying the hexagonal lattices of graphene enables the repositioning and merging of the Dirac cones which proves to be a key element in the use of these materials for alternative electronic applications such as valleytronics. Here we study the nonequilibrium transport of carriers within a system containing two Dirac cones in both standard graphene and semi-Dirac graphene. In the latter, the lattice modifications cause the relativistic and parabolic dispersion bands to coexist, furnishing the Fermi surface with a rich pseudospin texture and a versatile Dirac cones separation. We construct a k…
In this work, pumped currents of the adiabatically-driven double-barrier structure based on the pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl fermions are studied. As a result of the three-band dispersion and hence the unique properties of pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl quasiparticles, sharp current-direction reversal is found at certain parameter settings especially at the Dirac point of the band structure, where apexes of the two cones touches at the flat band. Such a behavior can be interpreted consistently by the Berry phase of the scattering matrix and the classical turnstile mechanism.
Graphene electrons feature a pair of massless Dirac cones of opposite pseudospin chirality at two valleys. Klein tunneling refers to the intriguing capability of these chiral electrons to penetrate through high and wide potential barrier. The two valleys have been treated independently in the literature, where time reversal symmetry dictates that neither the normal incidence transmission nor the angle-averaged one can have any valley polarization. Here we show that, when intervalley scattering by barrier is accounted, graphene electrons normally incident at a superlattice barrier can experienc…
We foretell a new pseudospin-dependent phenomenon in mono-layer graphene (MLG), which is numerically simulated \emph{via} an innovator nano-spintronic device. We proposed a novel theoretical procedure for describing the dynamics of Dirac fermions, departing from classic theoretical modelling. More importantly, we have found appealing evidences of wiggling anti-phase oscillations in the probability density time-distribution for each sub-lattice state, which we called pseudospinorial Zitterbewegung effect (PZBE). The PZBE undergoes modulated by a robust transient character, with decay time of fe…
Recently, many unexpected fine structures in electric, magnetic, and thermoelectric responses at extremely magnetic fields in topological materials have attracted tremendous interest. We propose a new mechanism of quantum oscillation beyond the strong-field quantum limit for Dirac fermions. The amplitude of the oscillation is far larger than the usual Shubnikov--de Haas oscillation. The oscillation tends to be periodic in the magnetic field B, instead of 1/B. The period of the oscillation does not depend on the Fermi energy. These behaviors cannot be described by the famous Lifshitz-Kosevich f…
We investigate the role of pseudospin structure of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) in interband tunneling properties in lateral BP junctions. We find that interband tunneling is critically dependent on junction directions because of the anisotropic pseudospin structure of BP. When the armchair direction of BP is normal to the interface, pseudospins of incident and transmitted carriers are nearly aligned so that interband tunneling is highly effective, analogous to the Klein tunneling in graphene. However, when the zigzag direction is normal to the interface, interband tunneling is suppressed b…
We present an ab initio approach for the calculation of phonon self-energies and their fluctuation diagnostics, which allows us to identify the electronic processes behind phonon anomalies. Application to the transition-metal-dichalcogenide monolayer 1H-TaS$_2$ reveals that coupling between the longitudinal-acoustic phonons and the electrons from an isolated low-energy metallic band is entirely responsible for phonon anomalies such as the mode softening and associated charge-density waves observed in this material. Our analysis allows us to distinguish between different mode-softening mechanis…
We study transport across ballistic junctions of materials which host pseudospin-one fermions as emergent low-energy quasiparticles. The effective low-energy Hamiltonians of such fermions are described by integer spin Weyl models. We show that current conservation in such integer spin-$s$ Weyl systems requires continuity across a boundary of only $2s$ (out of $2s+1$) components of the wave function. Using the current conservation conditions, we study the transport between normal metal-barrier-normal metal (NBN) and normal metal-barrier-superconductor (NBS) junctions of such systems in the pres…

Recently, orbital-textures have been found in Rashba and topological insulator (TI) surface states as a result of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we predict a $p_x/p_y$ orbital texture, in linear dispersive Dirac bands, arising at the K/K' points of $χ$-$h_0$ borophene chiral monolayer. Combining first-principles calculations with effective hamiltonians, we show that the orbital pseudospin has its direction locked with the momentum in a similar way as TIs' spin-textures. Additionally, considering a layer pseudospin degree of freedom, this lattice allows stackings of layers with equivalent…
Quantum materials that host a flat band, such as pseudospin-1 lattices and magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, can exhibit drastically new physical phenomena including unconventional superconductivity, orbital ferromagnetism, and Chern insulating behaviors. We report a surprising class of electronic in-gap edge states in pseudospin-1 materials without the conventional need of band-inversion topological phase transitions or introducing magnetism via an external magnetic type of interactions. In particular, we find that, in two-dimensional gapped (insulating) Dirac systems of massive spin-1 qu…
We study the interconversion between photons and phonons coupled via radiation pressure in artificial Dirac materials realized by a honeycomb array of optomechanical cells. In particular we analyze the chiral tunneling of (photon-phonon) polaritons through an oscillating planar barrier. While a static barrier accommodates constructively interfering optical or mechanical waves leading to photon or phonon transmission, an oscillating barrier allows for inelastic scattering that causes sideband excitations and interference effects which, in turn, may suppress or revive the light-sound interconver…
