The scattering of two-dimensional (2D) massless Dirac electrons is investigated in the presence of a random array of circular mass barriers. The inverse momentum relaxation time and the Hall factor are calculated and used to obtain parallel and perpendicular resistivity components within linear transport theory. We found a non zero perpendicular resistivity component which has opposite sign for electrons in the different K and K' valleys. This property can be used for valley filter purposes. The total cross-section for scattering on penetrable barriers exhibit resonances due to the presence of quasi-bound states in the barriers that show up as sharp gaps in the cross-section while for Schrödinger electrons they appear as peaks.
We study the polarization dependence of optical absorption for the modified Haldane model, which exhibits antichiral edge modes in presence of sample boundaries and has been argued to be realizable in transition metal dichalcogenides or Weyl semimetals. A rich optical phase diagram is unveiled, in which the correlations between perfect circular dichroism, pseudospin and valley polarization can be tuned independently upon varying the Fermi energy. Importantly, perfect circular dichroism and valley polarization are achieved simultaneously. This unprecedented combination of optical properties sug…
We develop a theory of circular photogalvanic effect in non-gyrotropic two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers under interband optical transitions. Oblique incidence of circularly-polarized electromagnetic field or normal incidence of elliptically polarized electromagnetic field is assumed. In contrast to the linear-in-intensity conventional photogalvanic effect, the effect considered here arises in the second intensity order. The effect is conditioned by i) the predominant population of the valleys by the circular in-plane electromagnetic field component and ii) the direct …
We report electronic transport measurements through a silicon hybrid double quantum dot consisting of a donor and a quantum dot. Transport spectra show resonant tunneling peaks involving different valley states, which illustrate the valley splitting in a quantum dot on a Si/SiO2 interface. The detailed gate bias dependence of double dot transport allows a first direct observation of the valley splitting in the quantum dot, which is controllable between 160-240 ueV with an electric field dependence 1.2 +- 0.2 meV/(MV/m). A large valley splitting is an essential requirement to implement a physic…

A photoinduced current of a layered MoS2-based transistor is studied from first-principles. Under the illumination of circular polarized light, a valley-polarized current is generated, which can be tuned by the gate voltage. For monolayer MoS2, the valley-polarized spin-up (down) electron current at K (K') points is induced by the right (left) circular polarized light. The valley polarization is found to reach +1.0 (-1.0) for the valley current that carried such a K (K') index. For bilayer MoS2, the spin-up (down) current can be induced at both K and K' valleys by the right (left) circular lig…
This paper presents experimental evidence of the existence of acoustic valley Hall (AVHE) edge states in topological elastic waveguides. The fundamental lattice is assembled based on a non-resonant unit where space inversion symmetry (SIS) is broken by simply perturbing the underlying lattice geometry. This aspect is in net contrast with existing elastic AVHE designs that exploit locally-resonant units and require the addition of masses in order to break SIS. The experimental results presented in this study validate findings so far presented only at theoretical and numerical level. In particul…
Using the tight-binding approach we study the electronic transport in a $\mathrm{MoS}_2$ zigzag ribbon with a spatially varying potential profile. Considering a ribbon with a smooth potential step in the Fermi energy regime where the transport is dominated by the edge modes, we find that the conductance exhibits sharp resonances due to the resonant transport through a n-p-n junction effectively created in the structure. We show that in a gated wire the current carried on the wire edges can be blocked despite the metallic band structure of the ribbon. For the Fermi energies corresponding to $\m…
We have measured the far-infrared reflectivity and Kerr angle spectra on a high-quality crystal of pure semimetallic bismuth as a function of magnetic field, from which we extract the conductivity for left- and right handed circular polarisations. The high spectral resolution allows us to separate the intraband Landau level transitions for electrons and holes. The hole transition exhibits 100% magnetic circular dichroism, it appears only for one polarisation as expected for a circular cyclotron orbit. However the dichroism for electron transitions is reduced to only $13\pm 1$%, which is quanti…
Employing the Landauer-Buttiker formula we investigate the spin and valley dependence of Seebeck effect in low-buckled Dirac materials (LBDMs), whose band structure are modulated by local application of a gate voltage and off-resonant circularly polarized light. We calculate the charge, spin and valley Seebeck coefficients of an irradiated LBDM as functions of electronic doping, light intensity and the amount of the electric field in the linear regime. Our calculation reveal that all Seebeck coefficients always shows an odd features with respect to the chemical potential. Moreover, we show tha…
We study ballistic transport of Dirac electrons through a strip in silicene, when the strip is exposed to off-resonant circularly polarized light and an electric field applied perpendicular to the silicene plane. We show that the conductance through the strip is spin- or/and valley-polarized. This can be explained by spin-valley coupling in silicene, and modification of its band structure through virtual absorption/emission processes and also by the perpendicular electric field. The spin- (valley-) polarization can be enhanced by tuning the light intensity and the value of the perpendicular el…

The intertube conductance $G$ of the parallel side contacted armchair nanotubes is calculated by Landauer's formula as a function of the Fermi level $E$. When the intertube difference in the dope strength is large enough, a resonant peak dominant over the others appears in the $E$-$G$ curve. The overlap length and the interlayer configuration do not influence the resonant energy. The intervalley transmission at the resonant peak works as a reverser and a filter of the valley current.
Relations for the optimum well width, barrier width and width of the spacer layer to achieve highest PVCR on the basis of effective mass and barrier height in RTDs is proposed. The optimum spacer layer is found to be half of the de-Broglie wavelength associated with the bound state of the corresponding finite quantum well. The proposed relations for the optimum parameters can be used to design RTD based on any two appropriate materials to attain highest PVCR. The effect of doping concentrations on PVCR and peak current was studied. As case study, we have considered the GaAs/Ga0.7Al0.3As and Ga…
We demonstrated nonperturbative high harmonics induced by intense mid-infrared light up to 18th order that well exceed the material bandgap in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. The intensities of the even-order high-harmonic radiation did not monotonically decrease as the harmonic order increased. By comparing the high harmonic spectra with the optical absorption spectra, we found that the enhancement in the even-order high harmonics could be attributed to the resonance to the band nesting energy. The symmetry analysis shows that the valley polarization and anisotropic band structure…
Circular polarization resolved magneto-infrared studies of multilayer epitaxial graphene (MEG) are performed using tunable quantum cascade lasers in high magnetic fields up to 17.5 T. Landau level (LL) transitions in the monolayer and bilayer graphene inclusions of MEG are resolved, and considerable electron-hole asymmetry is observed in the extracted electronic band structure. For monolayer graphene, a four-fold splitting of the $n=0$ to $n=1$ LL transition is evidenced and attributed to the lifting of the valley and spin degeneracy of the zeroth LL and the broken electron-hole symmetry. The …
We investigate the Goos-Hänchen shift for ballistic electrons (i) reflected from a step-like inhomogeneity of the potential energy and (or) effective mass, and (ii) transmitted through a ferromagnetic barrier region in monolayer silicene or gapped graphene. For the electrons reflected from a single interface we found that the Goos-Hänchen shift is valley-polarized for gapped graphene structure, and valley- and spin-polarized for silicene due to the spin-valley coupling. Incontrast, for example, to gapless graphene the lateral beam shift in gapped structures occurs not only in the case of total…
Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides are ideal materials to control both spin and valley degrees of freedom either electrically or optically. Nevertheless, optical excitation mostly generates excitons species with inherently short lifetime and spin/valley relaxation time. Here we demonstrate a very efficient spin/valley optical pumping of resident electrons in n-doped WSe2 and WS2 monolayers. We observe that, using a continuous wave laser and appropriate doping and excitation densities, negative trion doublet lines exhibit circular polarization of opposite sign and the photoluminesce…
We report dissipative dynamics of two valley excitons residing in the $K$ and $K^\prime$-valleys of bare WSe$_2$ monolayer and the one being integrated into a bimodal optical cavity. In the former, only when the exciton-field detunings in the $K$ and $K^\prime$-valleys are rigorously equal (resonant detuning), partially entangled stationary states can be created. Otherwise the concurrence of exciton qubits turns to zero. Remarkably, in the latter (the WSe$_2$ monolayer in a bimodal optical cavity), the transfers of entanglement from one subsystem (exciton/light) to the other (light/exciton) ta…
We propose a scheme to trap and filter electrons, valley dependently, on a scale beyond the diffraction limit, in a gapped Dirac system using a circularly polarized light beam and a microscale metallic resonator. The main mechanism allowing the selection is the valley dependent break of the time reversal symmetry. Indeed in one valley, the light partially closes the already existing gap while it opens it in the other one. This difference in the band structure close to the Dirac points, induces a change in the dynamics of the electrons, leading to a valley router behaviour of the system.
We investigate two-photon transitions to the electron-hole scattering continuum in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides, and identify two contributions to this nonlinear optical process with opposite circularly polarized valley selection rules. In the non-interacting limit, the competition between the two contributions leads to a crossover of the selection rule with the increase of the two-photon energy. With the strong Coulomb interaction between the electron and hole, the two contributions excite electron-hole scattering states in orthogonal angular momentum channels, while the strengt…
Utilizing spin or valley degree of freedom is one of the promising approaches to realize more energy-efficient information processing. In the 2D transition metal dichalcogenide, the spin/valley current can be generated by utilizing the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE), i.e., the generation of photocurrent by a circularly polarized light. Here we show that an in-plane electric field at MoS2/WSe2 heterostructure-electrode boundary results in an electrically tunable circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) under optical excitation with normal incidence. The observed CPGE can be explained by the v…
We present a theory of the photovoltaic valley-dependent Hall effect in a two-dimensional Dirac semiconductor subject to an intense near-resonant electromagnetic field. Our theory captures and elucidates the influence of both the field-induced resonant interband transitions and the nonequilibrium carrier kinetics on the resulting valley Hall transport in terms of photon-dressed quasiparticles. The non-perturbative renormalization effect of the pump field manifests itself in the dynamics of the photon-dressed quasiparticles, with a quasienergy spectrum characterized by {dynamical gaps $δ_η$ ($η…
Due to effect of Klein tunneling two-dimensional graphene quantum dots do not possess genuine bound states but quasi-bound (resonant tunneling) states only. We discuss in detail the attempt to describe these states within the framework of the Dirac pseudo-fermion model for circular dot. We demonstrate explicitly that introduced earlier the so called "resonance condition" corresponds to inconsistent system of linear equations obtained from matching conditions on the boundary of the quantum dot when one try to use it for complex energy values and to the case of total reflection for the energies …
We consider $α$-$T_3$ lattice illuminated by intense circularly polarized radiation in terahertz regime. We present quasienergy band structure, time-averaged energy spectrum and time-averaged density of states of $α$-$T_3$ lattice by solving the Floquet Hamiltonian numerically. We obtain exact analytical expressions of the quasienergies at the Dirac points for all values of $α$ and field strength. We find that the quasienergy band gaps at the Dirac point decrease with increase of $α$. Approximate forms of quasienergy and band gaps at single and multi-photon resonant points are derived using ro…
Within a two-band $k\cdot p$ method we analyze different types of strain for the $K$ valley optical characteristics of a freestanding monolayer MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We predict that circular polarization selectivity for energies above the direct transition onset deteriorates/improves by tensile/compressive strain. Wide range of available strained-sample photoluminescence data can be reasonably reproduced by this simple bandstructure combined with accounting for excitons at a variational level. According to this model strain impacts optoelectronic properties through its hydrost…
The fourfold spin-valley degenerate degrees of freedom in bulk graphene can support rich physics and novel applications associated with multicomponent quantum Hall effects and linear conductance filtering. In this work, we study how to break the spin-valley degeneracy of electron beams spatially. We propose a spin-valley beam splitter in a gated ferromagnetic/pristine/strained graphene structure. We demonstrate that, in a full resonant tunneling regime for all spin-valley beam components, the formation of quasi-standing waves can lead four giant lateral Goos-Hänchen shifts as large as the tran…
The emerging field of valleytronics aims to exploit the valley pseudospin of electrons residing near Bloch band extrema as an information carrier. Recent experiments demonstrating optical generation and manipulation of exciton valley coherence (the superposition of electron-hole pairs at opposite valleys) in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a critical step towards control of this quantum degree of freedom. The charged exciton (trion) in TMDs is an intriguing alternative to the neutral exciton for control of valley pseudospin because of its long spontaneous recombinatio…
We study massive Dirac fermion tunneling through time periodic potential in a silicene-based N-TP-N junction, where Ns are normal silicene regions and TP is the time periodic potential barrier. The fermions would absorb or emit photons due to the presence of the Floquet sidebands created in the TP. The nearly perfect spin-valley-sideband filtering is predicted. Applying only the exchange field leads to just only the electron absorbing a single photon almost purely allowed to tunnel through the junction for the large electric field. Reversing direction of electric field can select spin of the a…
We study the photogalvanic effect caused by a simultaneous action of circular-polarized interband and linearly-polarized intraband illuminations. It is found that, in such conditions, the steady photocurrent appears. The effect originates from the valley-selective pumping by the circular light, the trigonal asymmetry of the valleys together with the even asymmetry of the linearly-polarized light, that produces a polar in-plane asymmetry of the electron and hole distribution functions, leading to the photocurrent. The approach is based on the solution of the classical kinetic equation for carri…
We investigate interlayer tunneling in heterostructures consisting of two tungsten diselenide (WSe2) monolayers with controlled rotational alignment, and separated by hexagonal boron nitride. In samples where the two WSe2 monolayers are rotationally aligned we observe resonant tunneling, manifested by a large conductance and negative differential resistance in the vicinity of zero interlayer bias, which stem from energy- and momentum-conserving tunneling. Because the spin-orbit coupling leads to coupled spin-valley degrees of freedom, the twist between the two WSe2 monolayers allows us to prob…
Heterobilayers consisting of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers can host optically bright interlayer excitons with intriguing properties such as ultralong lifetimes and pronounced circular polarization of their photoluminescence due to valley polarization, which can be induced by circularly polarized excitation or applied magnetic fields. Here, we report on the observation of an intrinsic valley-magnetophonon resonance for localized interlayer excitons promoted by invervalley hole scattering. It leads to a resonant increase of the photoluminescence polarization degree at the same field of 24.2 Te…
Electrons in two-dimensional hexagonal materials have valley degree of freedom, which can be used to encode and process quantum information. The valley-selective excitations, governed by the circularly polarised light resonant with the material's band-gap, continues to be the foundation of valleytronics. It is often assumed that achieving valley selective excitation in pristine graphene with all-optical means is not possible due to the inversion symmetry of the system. Here we demonstrate that both valley-selective excitation and valley-selective high-harmonic generation can be achieved in pri…
Characterizing and manipulating the circular polarization of light is central to numerous emerging technologies, including spintronics and quantum computing. Separately, monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a versatile material that has demonstrated promise in a variety of applications, including single photon emitters and valleytronics. Here, we demonstrate a method to tune the photoluminescence (PL) intensity (factor of x161), peak position (38.4meV range), circular polarization (39.4% range), and valley polarization of a Bi2Se3-WS2 2D heterostructure using a low-power laser (0.762uW) in am…
For applications exploiting the valley pseudospin degree of freedom in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, efficient preparation of electrons or holes in a single valley is essential. Here, we show that a magnetic field of 7 Tesla leads to a near-complete valley polarization of electrons in MoSe2 monolayer with a density 1.6x10^{12} cm^{-2}; in the absence of exchange interactions favoring single-valley occupancy, a similar degree of valley polarization would have required a pseudospin g-factor exceeding 40. To investigate the magnetic response, we use polarization resolved photolumine…
