Recently, many unexpected fine structures in electric, magnetic, and thermoelectric responses at extremely magnetic fields in topological materials have attracted tremendous interest. We propose a new mechanism of quantum oscillation beyond the strong-field quantum limit for Dirac fermions. The amplitude of the oscillation is far larger than the usual Shubnikov--de Haas oscillation. The oscillation tends to be periodic in the magnetic field B, instead of 1/B. The period of the oscillation does not depend on the Fermi energy. These behaviors cannot be described by the famous Lifshitz-Kosevich formula. The oscillation arises from a mechanism that we refer to as the inversion of the lowest Landau level, resulted from the competition between the pseudospin Dirac-type Landau levels and real-spin Zeeman spitting beyond the quantum limit. This inversion gives rise to the oscillation of the Fermi energy and conductivity at extremely large magnetic fields. This mechanism will be useful for understanding the unexpected fine structures observed in the strong-field quantum limit in Dirac materials.
Modifying the hexagonal lattices of graphene enables the repositioning and merging of the Dirac cones which proves to be a key element in the use of these materials for alternative electronic applications such as valleytronics. Here we study the nonequilibrium transport of carriers within a system containing two Dirac cones in both standard graphene and semi-Dirac graphene. In the latter, the lattice modifications cause the relativistic and parabolic dispersion bands to coexist, furnishing the Fermi surface with a rich pseudospin texture and a versatile Dirac cones separation. We construct a k…
In this work, pumped currents of the adiabatically-driven double-barrier structure based on the pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl fermions are studied. As a result of the three-band dispersion and hence the unique properties of pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl quasiparticles, sharp current-direction reversal is found at certain parameter settings especially at the Dirac point of the band structure, where apexes of the two cones touches at the flat band. Such a behavior can be interpreted consistently by the Berry phase of the scattering matrix and the classical turnstile mechanism.
Recently, orbital-textures have been found in Rashba and topological insulator (TI) surface states as a result of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we predict a $p_x/p_y$ orbital texture, in linear dispersive Dirac bands, arising at the K/K' points of $χ$-$h_0$ borophene chiral monolayer. Combining first-principles calculations with effective hamiltonians, we show that the orbital pseudospin has its direction locked with the momentum in a similar way as TIs' spin-textures. Additionally, considering a layer pseudospin degree of freedom, this lattice allows stackings of layers with equivalent…
We present an ab initio approach for the calculation of phonon self-energies and their fluctuation diagnostics, which allows us to identify the electronic processes behind phonon anomalies. Application to the transition-metal-dichalcogenide monolayer 1H-TaS$_2$ reveals that coupling between the longitudinal-acoustic phonons and the electrons from an isolated low-energy metallic band is entirely responsible for phonon anomalies such as the mode softening and associated charge-density waves observed in this material. Our analysis allows us to distinguish between different mode-softening mechanis…
Quantum materials that host a flat band, such as pseudospin-1 lattices and magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, can exhibit drastically new physical phenomena including unconventional superconductivity, orbital ferromagnetism, and Chern insulating behaviors. We report a surprising class of electronic in-gap edge states in pseudospin-1 materials without the conventional need of band-inversion topological phase transitions or introducing magnetism via an external magnetic type of interactions. In particular, we find that, in two-dimensional gapped (insulating) Dirac systems of massive spin-1 qu…
We foretell a new pseudospin-dependent phenomenon in mono-layer graphene (MLG), which is numerically simulated \emph{via} an innovator nano-spintronic device. We proposed a novel theoretical procedure for describing the dynamics of Dirac fermions, departing from classic theoretical modelling. More importantly, we have found appealing evidences of wiggling anti-phase oscillations in the probability density time-distribution for each sub-lattice state, which we called pseudospinorial Zitterbewegung effect (PZBE). The PZBE undergoes modulated by a robust transient character, with decay time of fe…
We present a symmetric double-sided pillared phononic crystals (PPnCs) that can emulate both quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) and quantum valley Hall effect (QVHE) by solely imposing different geometric perturbations. Indeed, the Dirac cones can occur in the low (deep subwavelength) and high frequency regime by judiciously turning the parameters of the attached pillars and even a double Dirac cone can be achieved. We realize the valley-protected, the pseudospin-protected or the pseudospin-valley coupled edge states with the proposed platform. Besides, we show a variety of refraction phenomena (…

Friedel oscillation is a well-known wave phenomenon, which represents the oscillatory response of electron waves to imperfection. By utilizing the pseudospin-momentum locking in gapless graphene, two recent experiments demonstrate the measurement of the topological Berry phase by corresponding to the unique number of wavefront dislocations in Friedel oscillations. Here, we study the Friedel oscillations in gapped graphene, in which the pseudospin-momentum locking is broken. Unusually, the wavefront dislocations do occur as that in gapless graphene, which expects the immediate verification in t…
Chiral quasiparticles in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene have valley-contrasting Berry phases of 2π. This nontrival topological structure, associated with the pseudospin winding along a closed Fermi surface, is responsible for various novel electronic properties, such as anti-Klein tunneling, unconventional quantum Hall effect, and valley Hall effect1-6. Here we show that the quantum interference due to intervalley scattering induced by atomic defects/impurities provides further insights into the topological nature of the bilayer graphene. The scattered chiral quasiparticles between distinct v…
We have investigated the role of pseudospin polarization in electron wave packet dynamics in pristine graphene and in a graphene antidot lattice subject to an external magnetic field. Employing a Green's function formalism, we show that the electron dynamics can be controlled by tuning pseudospin polarization. We find that in Landau quantized pristine graphene both the propagation of an electron wave packet and Zitterbewegung oscillations strongly depend on pseudospin polarization. The electron wave packet is found to propagate in the direction of initial pseudospin polarization. We also show …
Periodicity of long wavelength moiré patterns is very often destroyed by the inhomogeneous strain introduced in fabrications of van der Waals layered structures. We present a framework to describe massive Dirac fermions in such distorted moiré pattern of transition metal dichalcogenides homobilayers, accounting for the dynamics of layer pseudospin. In decoupled bilayers, we show two causes of in-plane layer pseudospin precession: By the coupling of layer antisymmetric strain to valley magnetic moment; and by the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the SU(2) gauge potential for the case of R-type bilayer u…
Layered van-der-Waals materials with hexagonal symmetry offer an extra degree of freedom to their electrons, the so called valley index or valley pseudospin. This quantity behaves conceptually like the electron spin and the term valleytronics has been coined. In this context, the group of semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are particularly appealing, due to large spin-orbit interactions and a direct bandgap at the K points of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. In this work, we present investigations of excitonic transitions in mono- and multilayer WSe$_2$ and MoSe$_2$ materials …
General nonequilibrium quantum transport equations are derived for a coupled system of charge carriers, Dirac spin, isospin (or valley spin), and pseudospin, such as either one of the band, layer, impurity, and boundary pseudospins. Limiting cases are obtained for one, two or three different kinds of spin ocurring in a system. We show that a characteristic integer number $N_{s}$ determines the formal form of spin quantum transport equations, irrespective of the type of spins or pseudospins, as well as the maximal entanglement entropy. The results may shed a new perspective on the mechanism lea…
