In this paper, we systematically study the regularity theory of the linear system of nearly incompressible elasticity. In the setting of stochastic homogenization, we develop new techniques to establish the large-scale estimates of displacement and pressure, which are uniform in both the scale parameter and the incompressibility parameter. In particular, we obtain the boundary estimates in a new class of Lipschitz domains whose boundaries are smooth at large scales and bumpy at small scales.
This paper is concerned with homogenization of systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish sharp convergence rates in $L^2$ for the mixed boundary value problems with bounded measurable coefficients.
Starting from 3D elasticity equations we derive the model of the homogenized von Kármán plate by means of $Γ$-convergence. This generalizes the recent results, where the material oscillations were assumed to be periodic.
On the example of linearized elasticity we provide a framework for simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction in the setting of linearized elasticity as well as non-linear elasticity for the derivation of homogenized von Kármán plate and bending rod models. The framework encompasses even perforated domains and domains with oscillatory boundary, provided that the corresponding extension operator can be constructed. Locality property of $Γ$-closure is established, i.e. every energy density obtained by the homogenization process can be in almost every point be obtained as the limit of pe…
This paper concerns with a family of elliptic systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, arising in the theory of homogenization. We establish uniform optimal regularity estimates for solutions of Neumann problems in a bounded Lipschitz domain with $L^2$ boundary data. The proof relies on a boundary Korn inequality for solutions of systems of linear elasticity and uses a large-scale Rellich estimate obtained in \cite{Shen-2016}.
We study quantitative periodic homogenization of integral functionals in the context of non-linear elasticity. Under suitable assumptions on the energy densities (in particular frame indifference; minimality, non-degeneracy and smoothness at the identity; $p\geq d$-growth from below; and regularity of the microstructure), we show that in a neighborhood of the set of rotations, the multi-cell homogenization formula of non-convex homogenization reduces to a single-cell formula. The latter can be expressed with help of correctors. We prove that the homogenized integrand admits a quadratic Taylor …
We study non-convex elastic energy functionals associated to (spatially) periodic, frame indifferent energy densities with a single non-degenerate energy well at SO(n). Under the assumption that the energy density admits a quadratic Taylor expansion at identity, we prove that the Gamma-limits associated to homogenization and linearization commute. Moreover, we show that the homogenized energy density, which is determined by a multi-cell homogenization formula, has a quadratic Taylor expansion with a quadratic term that is given by the homogenization of the quadratic term associated to the line…
Many biological and engineering materials have nonperiodic microstructures for which classical periodic homogenization results do not apply. Certain nonperiodic microstructures may be approximated by locally periodic microstructures for which homogenization techniques are available. Motivated by the consideration that such materials are often anisotropic and can posses residual stresses, a broad class of locally periodic microstructures is considered and the resulting effective macroscopic equations are derived. The effective residual stress and effective elasticity tensor are determined by so…
Since the seminal contribution of Geymonat, Müller, and Triantafyllidis, it is known that strong ellipticity is not necessarily conserved through periodic homogenization in linear elasticity. This phenomenon is related to microscopic buckling of composite materials. Consider a mixture of two isotropic phases which leads to loss of strong ellipticity when arranged in a laminate manner, as considered by Gutiérrez and by Briane and Francfort. In this contribution we prove that the laminate structure is essentially the only microstructure which leads to such a loss of strong ellipticity. We perfor…
We derive, by means of Gamma-convergence, the equations of homogenized bending rod starting from $3D$ nonlinear elasticity equations. The main assumption is that the energy behaves like h^2 (after dividing by the order h^2 of vanishing volume) where h is the thickness of the body. We do not presuppose any kind of periodicity and work in the general framework. The result shows that, on a subsequence, we always obtain the equations of bending-torsion rod and identifies, in an abstract formulation, the limiting quadratic form connected with that model. This is a generalization from periodic to no…
The paper deals with the existence and almost periodic homogenization of some model of generalized Navier-Stokes equations. We first establish an existence result for non-stationary Ladyzhenskaya equations with a given non constant density. The external force depends nonlinearly on the velocity. Next, to proceed with homogenization, as the density of the fluid is non constant, we combine the sigma-convergence method with some compactness arguments.
In this paper, we consider the homogenization problems for evolutionary incompressible Navier-Stokes system in three dimensional domains perforated with a large number of small holes which are periodically located. We first establish certain uniform estimates for the weak solutions. To overcome the extra difficulties coming from the time derivative, we use the idea of Temam and consider the equations by integrating in time variable. After suitably extending the weak solutions to the whole domain, we employ the generalized cell problem to study the limit process.
In this note we treat the equations of fractional elasticity. After establishing well-posedness, we show a compactness result related to the theory of homogenization. For this, a previous result in (abstract) homogenization theory of evolutionary equations has to be improved. The approach also permits the consideration of non-local operators (in time and space).
We analyze the $Γ$-convergence of sequences of free-discontinuity functionals arising in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities, including phenomena as fracture, damage, or material voids. We prove compactness with respect to $Γ$-convergence and represent the $Γ$-limit in an integral form defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$). We identify the integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas and prove a non-interaction property between bulk and surface contributions. Eventually, we investigate sequences of correspondin…
In a Lipschitz cylinder, this paper is devoted to establish an almost sharp error estimate $O(\varepsilon\log_2(1/\varepsilon))$ in $L^2$-norm for parabolic systems of elasticity with initial-Dirichlet conditions, arising in the homogenization theory. To achieve the goal, with the parabolic distance function being a weight, we first developed some new weighted-type inequalities for the smoothing operator at scale $\varepsilon$ in terms of t-anisotropic Sobolev spaces, and then all the problems may be reduced to three kinds of estimate for the homogenized system, in which a weighted-type Caccio…
A phase-field model for two-phase immiscible, incompressible porous media flow with surface tension effects is considered. The pore-scale model consists of a strongly coupled system of Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations. The fluids are separated by an evolving diffuse interface of a finite width depending on the scale parameter $\varepsilon$ in the considered model. At first the well-posedness of a coupled system of partial differential equations at micro scale is investigated. We obtained the homogenized equations for the microscopic model via unfolding operator and two-scale convergence approach…
Contact problems with Coulomb friction in linear elasticity are notoriously difficult and their mathematical analysis is still largely incomplete. In this paper, a model problem with heterogeneous friction coefficient is considered in two-dimensional elasticity. For this model problem, an existence and uniqueness result is proved, relying heavily on harmonic analysis. A complete and rigorous homogenization analysis can be performed in the case of a highly oscillating friction coefficient, being the first result in that direction. The Coulomb law is found to hold in the limit, and an explicit f…
We establish interior Lipschitz estimates at the macroscopic scale for solutions to systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients and mixed boundary conditions in domains periodically perforated at a microscopic scale $\varepsilon$ by establishing $H^1$-convergence rates for such solutions. The interior estimates are derived directly without the use of compactness via an argument presented in [3] that was adapted for elliptic equations in [2] and [11]. As a consequence, we derive a Liouville type estimate for solutions to the systems of linear elasticity in unboun…
In the present work, we established almost-sharp error estimates for linear elasticity systems in periodically perforated domains. The first result was $L^{\frac{2d}{d-1-τ}}$-error estimates $O\big(\varepsilon^{1-\fracτ{2}}\big)$ with $0<τ<1$ for a bounded smooth domain. It followed from weighted Hardy-Sobolev's inequalities and a suboptimal error estimate for the square function of the first-order approximating corrector (which was earliest investigated by C. Kenig, F. Lin, Z. Shen \cite{KLS} under additional regularity assumption on coefficients). The new approach relied on the weighted quen…
We study the homogenization limit of solutions to the G-equation with random drift. This Hamilton-Jacobi equation is a model for flame propagation in a turbulent fluid in the regime of thin flames. For a fluid velocity field that is statistically stationary and ergodic, we prove sufficient conditions for homogenization to hold with probability one. These conditions are expressed in terms of travel times for the associated control problem. When the spatial dimension is equal to two and the fluid velocity is divergence-free, we verify that these conditions hold under suitable assumptions about t…
We consider a general class of parametrized displacement boundary value problems in incompressible nonlinear elasticity. We prove the existence of an unbounded solution branch of classical injective solutions emanating from the unforced stress-free reference configuration, which constitutes a sharp global implicit function theorem. The ramifications of this are: There exists at least one solution for any given applied loading, and or there exists solutions of arbitrarily large norm for some finite loading. We refer to this as solutions in the large. The nonlinear constraint equation enforcing …
In this work we consider the elasticity problem for two domains separated by a heterogeneous layer. The layer has an $\varepsilon-$periodic structure, $\varepsilon\ll1$, including a multiple micro-contact between the structural components. The components are surrounded by cracks and can have rigid displacements. The contacts are described by the Signorini and Tresca-friction conditions. In order to obtain preliminary estimates modification of the Korn inequality for the $\varepsilon-$dependent periodic layer is performed. An asymptotic analysis with respect to $\varepsilon \to 0$ is provided a…
We consider pure traction problems and we show that incompressible linearized elasticity can be obtained as variational limit of incompressible finite elasticity under suitable conditions on external loads.
This paper is devoted to establishing the uniform estimates and asymptotic behaviors of the Green's functions $(G_\varepsilon,Π_\varepsilon)$ (and fundamental solutions $(Γ_\varepsilon, Q_\varepsilon)$) for the Stokes system with periodically oscillating coefficients (including a system of linear incompressible elasticity). Particular emphasis will be placed on the new oscillation estimates for the pressure component $Π_\varepsilon$. Also, for the first time we prove the \textit{adjustable} uniform estimates (i.e., Lipschitz estimate for velocity and oscillation estimate for pressure) by makin…
We derive, via simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction, the Gamma-limit for thin elastic plates whose energy density oscillates on a scale that is either comparable to, or much smaller than, the film thickness. We consider the energy scaling that corresponds to Kirchhoff's nonlinear bending theory of plates.
Since the seminal contribution of Geymonat, M{ü}ller, and Triantafyllidis, it is known that strong ellipticity is not necessarily conserved by homogenization in linear elasticity. This phenomenon is typically related to microscopic buckling of the composite material. The present contribution is concerned with the interplay between isotropy and strong ellipticity in the framework of periodic homogenization in linear elasticity. Mixtures of two isotropic phases may indeed lead to loss of strong ellipticity when arranged in a laminate manner. We show that if a matrix/inclusion type mixture of iso…
We prove existence and uniqueness for solutions to equilibrium problems for free-standing, traction-free, non homogeneous crystals in the presence of plastic slips. Moreover we prove that this class of problems is closed under G-convergence of the operators. In particular the homogenization procedure, valid for elliptic systems in linear elasticity, depicts the macroscopic features of a composite material in the presence of plastic deformation.
We obtain linear elasticity as $Γ$-limit of finite elasticity under incompressibility assumption and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The result is shown for a large class of energy densities for rubber-like materials.
We investigate quantitative estimates in periodic homogenization of second-order elliptic systems of elasticity with singular fourth-order perturbations. The convergence rates, which depend on the scale $κ$ that represents the strength of the singular perturbation and on the length scale $ε$ of the heterogeneities, are established. We also obtain the large-scale Lipschitz estimate, down to the scale $ε$ and independent of $κ$. This large-scale estimate, when combined with small-scale estimates, yields the classical Lipschitz estimate that is uniform in both $ε$ and $κ$.
This paper deals with the homogenization through $Γ$-convergence of weakly coercive integral energies with the oscillating density $\mathbb{L}(x/ε)\nabla v : \nabla v$ in three-dimensional elasticity. The energies are weakly coercive in the sense where the classical functional coercivity satisfied by the periodic tensor L (using smooth test functions v with compact support in $\mathbb{R}^3$) which reads as $Λ(\mathbb{L}) >0$, is replaced by the relaxed condition $Λ(\mathbb{L}) \ge 0$. Surprisingly, we prove that contrary to the two-dimensional case of [2] which seems a priori more constrained,…

In the context of infinitesimal strain plasticity with hardening, we derive a stochastic homogenization result. We assume that the coefficients of the equation are random functions: elasticity tensor, hardening parameter and flow-rule function are given through a dynamical system on a probability space. A parameter $\eps>0$ denotes the typical length scale of oscillations. We derive effective equations that describe the behavior of solutions in the limit $\eps\to 0$. The homogenization limit is based on the needle-problem approach: We verify that the stochastic coefficients "allow averaging": …
We establish large-scale interior Lipschitz estimates for solutions to systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients and Dirichlet boundary conditions in domains with periodically placed inclusions of size $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon)$ and magnitude $δ$ by establishing $H^1$-convergence rates for such solutions. The interior estimates at the macroscopic scale are derived directly without the use of compactness via a Campanato-type scheme presented by S. Armstrong and C.K. Smart and that was adapted for uniformly elliptic equations in by Armstrong and Z. Shen.
We consider the elasticity problem in a %heterogeneous domain with contact on multiple periodic open cracks. The contact is described by the Signorini and Coulomb-friction conditions. Problem is non-linear, the dissipative functional depends on the un-known solution and the existence of the solution for fixed period of the structure is usually proven by the fix-point argument in the Sobolev spaces with a little higher regularity, $H^{1+α}$. We rescaled norms, trace, jump and Korn inequalities in fractional Sobolev spaces with positive and negative exponent, using the unfolding technique, intro…
We study the homogenization of a stationary random maximal monotone operator on a probability space equipped with an ergodic dynamical system. The proof relies on Fitzpatrick's variational formulation of monotone relations, on Visintin's scale integration/disintegration theory and on Tartar-Murat's compensated compactness. We provide applications to systems of PDEs with random coefficients arising in electromagnetism and in nonlinear elasticity.
For calculating large deformations in finite elasticity, we have proposed a method of successive linear approximation, by considering the relative descriptional formulation. In this article we briefly describe this method and we prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for boundary value problems for nearly incompressible Mooney-Rivlin materials, that arise in each step of the method.
For a family of systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we establish sharp boundary estimates with either Dirichlet or Neumann conditions, uniform down to the microscopic scale, without smoothness assumptions on the coefficients. Under additional smoothness conditions, these estimates, combined with the corresponding local estimates, lead to the full Rellich type estimates in Lipschitz domains and Lipschitz estimates in $C^{1, α}$ domains. The $C^α$, $W^{1,p}$, and $L^p$ estimates in $C^1$ domains for systems with VMO coefficients are also studied. The appr…
A homogenization result is given for a material having brittle inclusions arranged in a periodic structure. According to the relation between the softness parameter and the size of the microstructure, three different limit models are deduced via Gamma-convergence. In particular, damage is obtained as limit of periodically distributed microfractures.
We consider a class of elasticity equations in ${\mathbb R}^d$ whose elastic moduli depend on $n$ separated microscopic scales, are random and expressed as a linear expansion of a countable sequence of random variables which are independently and identically uniformly distributed in a compact interval. The multiscale Hellinger-Reissner problem that allows for computing the stress directly, and the multiscale mixed problem for nearly incompressible isotropic materials are considered. The stochastic problems are studied via deterministic problems that depend on a countable number of real paramet…
In several works, the theory of strongly continuous groups is used to build a framework for solving stochastic homogenization problems. Following this idea, we construct a detailed and comprehensive theory of homogenization. This enables to solve homogenization problems in algebras with mean value, regardless of whether they are ergodic or not, thereby responding affirmatively to the question raised by Zhikov and Krivenko [V.V. Zhikov, E.V. Krivenko, Homogenization of singularly perturbed elliptic operators. Matem. Zametki, 33 (1983) 571-582 (english transl.: Math. Notes, 33 (1983) 294-300)] t…
Homogenization in linear elliptic problems usually assumes coercivity of the accompanying Dirichlet form. In linear elasticity, coercivity is not ensured through mere (strong) ellipticity so that the usual estimates that render homogenization meaningful break down unless stronger assumptions, like very strong ellipticity, are put into place. Here, we demonstrate that a L^2-type homogenization process can still be performed, very strong ellipticity notwithstanding, for a specific two-phase two dimensional problem whose significance derives from prior work establishing that one can lose strong e…
We consider the well-travelled problem of homogenization of random integral functionals. When the integrand has standard growth conditions, the qualitative theory is well-understood. When it comes to unbounded functionals, that is, when the domain of the integrand is not the whole space and may depend on the space-variable, there is no satisfactory theory. In this contribution we develop a complete qualitative stochastic homogenization theory for nonconvex unbounded functionals with convex growth. We first prove that if the integrand is convex and has $p$-growth from below (with $p>d$, the dim…
We present an introduction to periodic and stochastic homogenization of ellip- tic partial differential equations. The first part is concerned with the qualitative theory, which we present for equations with periodic and random coefficients in a unified approach based on Tartar's method of oscillating test functions. In partic- ular, we present a self-contained and elementary argument for the construction of the sublinear corrector of stochastic homogenization. (The argument also applies to elliptic systems and in particular to linear elasticity). In the second part we briefly discuss the repr…
