We introduce a notion of normalised oplax $3$-functor suitable for the elementary homotopy theory of strict $3$-categories, following the combinatorics of orientals. We show that any such morphism induces a morphism of simplicial sets between the Street nerves and we characterise those morphisms of simplicial sets coming from normalised oplax $3$-functors. This allows us to prove that normalised oplax $3$-functors compose. Finally we construct a strictification for normalised oplax $3$-functors whose source is a $1$-category without split-monos or split-epis.
It is well known that to give an oplax functor of bicategories $\mathbf{1}\to\mathscr{C}$ is to give a comonad in $\mathscr{C}$. Here we generalize this fact, replacing the terminal bicategory by any bicategory $\mathscr{A}$ for which the composition functor admits generic factorisations. We call bicategories with this property generic, and show that for generic bicategories $\mathscr{A}$ one may express the data of an oplax functor $\mathscr{A}\to\mathscr{C}$ much like the data of a comonad; the main advantage of this description being that it does not directly involve composition in $\mathsc…
We introduce the notion of an oplax Hopf monoid in any braided monoidal bicategory, generalizing that of a Hopf monoid in a braided monoidal category in an appropriate way. We show that Hopf V-categories introduced in [BCV16] are a particular type of oplax Hopf monoids in the monoidal bicategory Span|V described in [Böh17]. Finally, we introduce Frobenius V-categories as the Frobenius objects in the same monoidal bicategory.
We give a definition of the Gray tensor product in the setting of scaled simplicial sets which is associative and forms a left Quillen bifunctor with respect to the bicategorical model category of Lurie. We then introduce a notion of oplax functor in this setting, and use it in order to characterize the Gray tensor product by means of a universal property. A similar characterization was used by Gaitsgory and Rozenblyum in their definition of the Gray product, thus giving a promising lead for comparing the two settings.
Monoidal categories enriched in a braided monoidal category $\mathcal{V}$ are classified by braided oplax monoidal functors from $\mathcal{V}$ to the Drinfeld centers of ordinary monoidal categories. In this article, we prove that this classifying functor is strongly monoidal if and only if the original $\mathcal{V}$-monoidal category is tensored over $\mathcal{V}$. We then define a completion operation which produces a tensored $\mathcal{V}$-monoidal category $\overline{\mathcal{C}}$ from an arbitrary $\mathcal{V}$-monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$, and we determine many equivalent conditions w…
There are many category-theoretic notions of algebraic theory, including Lawvere theories, monads, PROPs and operads. The first central notion of this thesis is a common generalisation of these, which we call a proto-theory. In order to define models of a proto-theory in a category, we need a way of relating the arities of the proto-theory with the objects of the category. This leads to our second central notion, that of an interpretation of arities, or aritation for short. We show that every aritation gives rise to a semantics functor sending proto-theories to models. In fact this functor alw…
Order-enriched solid functors, as presented in this paper in two versions, enjoy many of the strong properties of their ordinary counterparts, including the transfer of the existence of weighted (co)limits from their codomains to their domains. The ordinary version of the notion first appeared in Trnková's work on automata theory of the 1970s and was subsequently studied by others under various names, before being put into a general enriched context by Anghel. Our focus in this paper is on differentiating the order-enriched notion from the ordinary one, mostly in terms of the functor's behavio…
We are checking the closed categories beginning with the category of sets and ending with the category of categories. The novelty is a generalizing the notion of adjoint functors to the joint pair of functors in the category of directed graphs. We have described for what condition we get a bijective name mapping for graphs transports. Graphs aren't instances of categories, however we believe that new notion of functors joint pair will become important also for the categorical studies. As an example of future applications we introduce the notion of relator to some tensor product.
We introduce a new higher categorical structure called a weakly globular n-fold category. This structure is based on iterated internal categories and on the notion of weak globularity. We identify a suitable class of pseudo-functors whose strictification produces weakly globular n-fold categories.
We study the notion of fundamental group in the framework of descent-exact homological categories. This setting is sufficiently wide to include several categories of "algebraic" nature such as the almost abelian categories, the semi-abelian categories, and the categories of topological semi-abelian algebras. For many adjunctions in this context, the fundamental groups are described by generalised Brown-Ellis-Hopf formulae for the integral homology of groups.
Prompted by an example related to the tensor algebra, we introduce and investigate a stronger version of the notion of separable functor that we call heavily separable. We test this notion on several functors traditionally connected to the study of separability.
We define the notion of linguistic structure on a small category, in order to provide a more formal description of ontology logs, also known as ologs, introduced by R. E. Kent and D. I. Spivak in their paper "Ologs: A categorical framework for knowledge representation." In particular, we construct a bicategory $\mathsf{Eng}$, of English noun phrases and verb phrases, endorsed as functional by varying sets of authors. An olog is then defined as a lax functor to $\mathsf{Eng}$. We then present a new notion of linguistic functor, which extends Spivak's notion of meaningful functors. Finally, we d…
We introduce the notion of $λ$-equivalence and $λ$-embeddings of objects in suitable categories. This notion specializes to $L_{\inftyλ}$-equivalence and $L_{\inftyλ}$-elementary embedding for categories of structures in a language of arity less than $λ$, and interacts well with functors and $λ$-directed colimits. We recover and extend results of Feferman and Eklof on "local functors" without fixing a language in advance. This is convenient for formalizing Lefschetz's principle in algebraic geometry, which was one of the main applications of the work of Eklof.
We define the notion of an $\mathcal{RO}(G)$-graded Tambara functor and prove that any $G$-spectrum with norm multiplication gives rise to such an $\mathcal{RO}(G)$-graded Tambara functor.
In the first part of this note, we review and compare various instances of the notion of twisted coefficient system, a.k.a. polynomial functor, appearing in the literature. This notion hinges on how one defines the degree of a functor from $\mathcal{C}$ to an abelian category, for various different structures on $\mathcal{C}$. In the second part, we focus on twisted coefficient systems defined on partial braid categories, and explain a functorial framework for this setting.
We introduce and study a general notion of polynomial functor from a small monoidal symmetric category whose unit is an initial object and give a classification result of polynomial functors of degree smaller of equal to n modulo those of degree smaller of equal to n-1 in the case of a category of hermitian spaces.
In this paper, we study the relation between topological orders and their gapped boundaries. We propose that the bulk for a given gapped boundary theory is unique. It is actually a consequence of a microscopic definition of a local topological order, which is a (potentially anomalous) topological order defined on an open disk. Using this uniqueness, we show that the notion of "bulk" is equivalent to the notion of center in mathematics. We achieve this by first introducing the notion of a morphism between two local topological orders of the same dimension, then proving that the bulk satisfying …
The goal of the present paper is to compare, in a precise way, two notions of operads up to homotopy which appear in the literature. Namely, we construct a functor from the category of strict unital homotopy colored operads to the category of infinity-operads. The former notion, that we make precise, is the operadic generalization of the notion of A-infinity-categories and the latter notion was defined by Moerdijk--Weiss in order to generalize the simplicial notion of infinity-category of Joyal--Lurie. This functor extends in two directions the simplicial nerve of Faonte--Lurie for A-infinity-…
We provide a new perspective on parallel 2-transport and principal 2-group bundles with 2-connection. We define parallel 2-transport as a 2-functor from the thin fundamental 2-groupoid to the 2-category of 2-group torsors. The definition of the 2-category of 2-group torsors is new, and we develop the tools necessary for computations in this 2-category. We prove a version of the non-Abelian Stokes Theorem and the Ambrose-Singer Theorem for 2-transport. This definition motivated by the fact that principal $G$-bundles with connection are equivalent to functors from the thin fundamental groupoid t…
We apply the notion of relative adjoint functor to generalise closed monoidal categories. We define representations in such categories and give their relation with left actions of monoids. The translation of these representations under lax monoidal functors is investigated. We introduce tensor product of representations of bimonoids as a functorial binary operation and show how symmetric lax monoidal functors act on this product. Finally we apply the general theory to classical and quantum representations.
