We introduce and develop the notion of scalar extension for abelian categories. Given a field extension F'/F, to every F-linear abelian category A satisfying a suitable finiteness condition we associate an F'-linear abelian category A' and an exact F-linear functor t: A --> A'. This functor is universal among F-linear right exact functors with target an F'-linear abelian category.
We discuss various basic properties of this concept, among others compatibilities with multilinear endofunctors such as tensor products, and the permanence of favourable properties of the functors and categories involved. We obtain the notion of scalar extension for Tannakian categories, which allows us to deduce consequences for the algebraic monodromy groups of Tannakian categories.
We classify the "quotients" of a tannakian category in which the objects of a tannakian subcategory become trivial, and we examine the properties of such quotient categories.
The principal aim of this note is to give an elementary proof of the fact that any two fiber functors of a Tannakian category are locally isomorphic. This builds on an idea of Deligne concerning scalar extensions of Tannakian categories and implements a proof strategy which Deligne attributes to Grothendieck. Besides categorical generalities, the proof merely relies on basic properties of exterior powers and the classification of finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain. Using related ideas (but less elementary means) we also present an alternative characterization of Tannakian…
Given a rigid tensor-triangulated category and a vector space valued homological functor for which the Künneth isomorphism holds, we construct a universal graded-Tannakian category through which the given homological functor factors. We use this to (unconditionally) construct graded-Tannakian categories of pure motives associated to a fixed Weil cohomology theory, with a fiber functor realizing the given cohomology theory. For $\ell$-adic cohomology and a ground field which is algebraic over a finite field, this category is Tannakian. In this case, we obtain in particular motivic Galois groups…
In this paper we generalize Tannakian formalism to fiber functors over general tensor categories. We will show that (under some technical conditions) if the fiber functor has a section, then the source category is equivalent to the category of comodules over a Hopf algebra in the target category. We will also give a description of this Hopf algebra using the notion of framed objects.
We explain why every non-trivial exact tensor functor on the triangulated category of mixed motives over a field F has zero kernel, if one assumes "all" motivic conjectures. In other words, every non-zero motive generates the whole category up to the tensor triangulated structure. Under the same assumptions, we also give a complete classification of triangulated étale motives over F with integral coefficients, up to the tensor triangulated structure, in terms of the characteristic and the orderings of F.
We determine internal characterisations for when a tensor category is (super) tannakian, for fields of positive characteristic. This generalises the corresponding characterisations in characteristic zero by P. Deligne. We also explore notions of Frobenius twists in tensor categories in positive characteristic.
We provide conditions for a category with a fiber functor to be equivalent to the category of representations of a linear differential algebraic group. This generalizes the notion of a neutral Tannakian category used to characterize the category of representations of a linear algebraic group.
For a large class of geometric objects, the passage to categories of quasi-coherent sheaves provides an embedding in the 2-category of abelian tensor categories. The notion of weakly Tannakian categories introduced by the author gives a characterization of tensor categories in the image of this embedding. However, this notion requires additional structure to be present, namely a fiber functor. For the case of classical Tannakian categories in characteristic zero, Deligne has found intrinsic properties - expressible entirely within the language of tensor categories - which are necessary and suf…
We study several classes of braided fusion categories, and prove that they all contain nontrivial Tannakian subcategories. As applications, we classify some fusion categories in terms of solvability and group-theoreticality.
We consider essentially small rigid tensor categories (not necessarily abelian) which have a faithful tensor functor to a category of super vector spaces over a field of characteristic 0. It is shown how to construct for each such tensor category a super Tannakian hull, which is a universal faithful tensor functor to a super Tannakian category over a field of characteristic 0. The construction is analogous to the passage from an integral domain to its field of fractions.
A fundamental theorem of P. Deligne (2002) states that a pre-Tannakian category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero admits a fiber functor to the category of supervector spaces (i.e., is the representation category of an affine proalgebraic supergroup) if and only if it has moderate growth (i.e., the lengths of tensor powers of an object grow at most exponentially). In this paper we prove a characteristic p version of this theorem. Namely we show that a pre-Tannakian category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0 admits a fiber functor into the Verlinde…
We prove an analog of the Künneth formula for the groups of minimal non-degenerate extensions arXiv:1602.05936 of symmetric fusion categories. We describe in detail the structure of the group of minimal extensions of a pointed super-Tannakian fusion category. This description resembles that of the third cohomology group of a finite abelian group. We explicitly compute this group in several concrete examples.
Strong similarities have been long observed between the Galois (Categories Galoisiennes) and the Tannaka (Categories Tannakiennes) theories of representation of groups. In this paper we construct an explicit (neutral) Tannakian context for the Galois theory of atomic topoi, and prove the equivalence between its fundamental theorems. Since the theorem is known for the Galois context, this yields, in particular, a proof of the fundamental (recognition) theorem for a new Tannakian context. This example is different from the additive cases or their generalization, where the theorem is known to hol…
We lay the foundations for a model theoretic study of proalgebraic groups. Our axiomatization is based on the tannakian philosophy. Through a tensor analog of skeletal categories we are able to consider neutral tannakian categories with a fibre functor as many-sorted first order structures. The class of diagonalizable proalgebraic groups is analyzed in detail. We show that the theory of a diagonalizable proalgebraic group $G$ is determined by the theory of the base field and the theory of the character group of $G$. Some initial steps towards a comprehensive study of types are also made.
We introduce, for a symmetric fusion category $\mathcal{A}$ with Drinfeld centre $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$, the notion of $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$-crossed braided tensor category. These are categories that are enriched over $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$ equipped with a symmetric tensor product, while being braided monoidal with respect to the usual tensor product on $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$. In the Tannakian case where $\mathcal{A}=\mathbf{Rep}(G)$ for a finite group $G$, the 2-category of $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$-crossed braided categories is shown to be equivalent to the 2-category of $G…
Under certain conditions, a scheme can be reconstructed from its category of quasi-coherent sheaves. The Tannakian reconstruction theorem provides another example where a geometric object can be reconstructed from an associated category, in this case the category of its finite dimensional representations. Lurie's result that the pseudofunctor which sends a geometric stack to its category of quasi-coherent sheaves is fully faithful provides a conceptual explanation for why this works. In this paper we prove a generalized Tannakian recognition theorem, in order to characterize a part of the imag…
We study the question when a category of ind-objects is abelian. Our answer allows a further generalization of the notion of weakly Tannakian categories introduced by the author. As an application we show that, under suitable conditions, the category of coherent sheaves on the product of two schemes with the resolution property is given by the Deligne tensor product of the categories of coherent sheaves of the two factors. To do this we prove that the class of quasi-compact and semi-separated schemes with the resolution property is closed under fiber products.
This is the third paper in a series. In part I we developed a deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we show how this theory can be used to study deformations of objects in homotopy and derived categories of abelian categories. Then we consider examples from (noncommutative) algebraic geometry. In particular, we study noncommutative Grassmanians that are true noncommutative moduli spaces of structure sheaves of projective subspaces in projective spaces.
This is mostly an overview. Given finitely presentable abelian categories $A$ and $B$, we sketch the construction of an abelian category of continuous functors from $A$ to $B$ that has nice $2$-categorical behaviour and gives an explicit model for the stable category of stable functors between the derived categories of $A$ and $B$. The construction is absolute, thus allows one to recover not only Hochschild but also Mac Lane Cohomology.
We define model category structures on the category of chain complexes over a Grothendieck abelian category depending on the choice of a generating family, and we study their behaviour with respect to tensor products and stabilization. This gives convenient tools to construct and understand triangulated categories of motives and we consider here the case of mixed motives over a regular base scheme.
Recently Dupont proved that the categories of discrete and codiscrete (or connected) objects in an abelian 2-category are equivalent abelian categories. He posses also a question whether any abelian category comes in this way. We will give a rather trivial solution of this problem in the case when a given abelian category has enough projective or injective objects.
A natural question in the theory of Tannakian categories is: What if you don't remember $\Forget$? Working over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$, we prove that an answer to this question is given by the functor represented by the étale fundamental groupoid $π_1(\spec(R))$, i.e.\ the separable absolute Galois group of $R$ when it is a field. This gives a new definition for étale $π_1(\spec(R))$ in terms of the category of $R$-modules rather than the category of étale covers. More generally, we introduce a new notion of "commutative 2-ring" that includes both Grothendieck topoi and symmetric mo…
We study the construction of arXiv:2111.11217 [math:AG] in more detail, especially in the case of Schur-finite rigid $\otimes$-categories. This leads to some groundwork on the ideal structure of rigid additive and abelian $\otimes$-categories.
Auslander-Reiten duality for module categories is generalised to Grothendieck abelian categories that have a sufficient supply of finitely presented objects. It is shown that Auslander-Reiten duality amounts to the fact that the functor Ext^1(C,-) into modules over the endomorphism ring of C admits a partially defined right adjoint when C is a finitely presented object. This result seems to be new even for module categories. For appropriate schemes over a field, the connection with Serre duality is discussed.
We study the transfer of (dual) relative Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories, and we deduce the transfer of (dual) relative Baer property. We also give applications to Grothendieck categories, comodule categories and (graded) module categories, with emphasis on endomorphism rings.
In this paper, we study the relationship of Gorenstein projective objects among three Abelian categories in a recollement. As an application, we introduce the relation of $n$-Gorenstein tilting modules (and Gorenstein syzygy modules) in three Abelian categories. For a recollement of Abelian categories, we show that a resolving subcategory induce two resolving subcategories. On the other hand, we also prove that two resolving subcategories can induce a resolving subcategory. Moreover, we give the size relationship between the relative global dimensions of three Abelian categories.
This paper has been withdrawn, because I have merged it with paper I of the series, math.AG/0312190. The main results of this paper now appear in sections 7-9 of the revised version of math.AG/0312190, with shortened and improved proofs.
In this paper, we show all k-linear abelian 1-Calabi-Yau categories over an algebraically closed field k are derived equivalent to either the category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve, or to the finite dimensional representations of k[[t]]. Since all abelian categories derived equivalent with these two are known, we obtain a classification of all k-linear abelian 1-Calabi-Yau categories up to equivalence.
We give a classification of nullity classes (or torsion classes) in an abelian category by forming a spectrum of equivalence classes of premonoform objects. This is parallel to Kanda's classification of Serre subcategories.
In the efforts to define a 2-categorical analog of an abelian category, two (or three) notions of "abelian 2-categories" are defined. One is the relatively exact 2-category, and the other(s) is the (2-)abelian Gpd-category. We compare these notions. Since they proceed independently in their own way, in different settings and terminologies, it will be worth while to collect and unify them. In this paper, by comparing their definitions and arguments, we show the relationship among these classes of 2-categories.
We define torsion pairs for quasi-abelian categories and give several characterisations. We show that many of the torsion theoretic concepts translate from abelian categories to quasi-abelian categories. As an application, we generalise the recently defined algebraic Harder-Narasimhan filtrations to quasi-abelian categories.
Basing ourselves on Janelidze and Kelly's general notion of central extension, we study universal central extensions in the context of semi-abelian categories. We consider a new fundamental condition on composition of central extensions and give examples of categories which do, or do not, satisfy this condition.
We study abelian group objects in $ω$-categories and discuss the well-known Dold-Kan correspondence from the perspective of $ω$-categories as a model for strict $\infty$-categories. The first part of the paper is intended to compile results from the existing literature and to fill some gaps therein. We go on to consider a parameterized Dold-Kan correspondence, i.e. a Dold-Kan correspondence for presheaves of $ω$-categories. The main result is to describe the descent or sheaf condition in terms of a glueing condition that is familiar for 1 and 2-stacks.
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a small $n$-abelian category. We show that the category of absolutely pure group valued functors over $\mathcal{M}$, denote by $\mathcal{L}_2(\mathcal{M},\mathcal{G})$, is an abelian category and $\mathcal{M}$ is equivalent to a full subcategory of $\mathcal{L}_2(\mathcal{M},\mathcal{G})$ in such a way that $n$-kernels and $n$-cokernels are precisely exact sequences of $\mathcal{L}_2(\mathcal{M},\mathcal{G})$ with terms in $\mathcal{M}$. This gives a higher-dimensional version of the Freyd-Mitchell embedding theorem for $n$-abelian categories.
We put cluster tilting in ageneral framework by showing that any quotient of a triangulated category modulo a tilting subcategory (that is, a maximal one-orthogonal subcategory) carries an abelian structure. These abelian quotients turn out to be module categories of Goreisten algebras of dimension at most one.
We investigate how to characterize subcategories of abelian categories in terms of intrinsic axioms. In particular, we find intrinsic axioms which characterize generating cogenerating functorially finite subcategories, precluster tilting subcategories, and cluster tilting subcategories of abelian categories. As a consequence we prove that any $d$-abelian category is equivalent to a $d$-cluster tilting subcategory of an abelian category, without any assumption on the categories being projectively generated.
Semi-abelian and finitely cocomplete homological categories are characterized in terms of four resp. three simple axioms, in terms of the basic categorical notions introduced in the first few chapters of MacLane's classical book. As an immediate application we show that categories of diagrams in semi-abelian and similar categories are of the same type; in particular, the category of simplicial or Γ-objects in a semi-abelian category is semi-abelian.
We introduce $n$-abelian and $n$-exact categories, these are analogs of abelian and exact categories from the point of view of higher homological algebra. We show that $n$-cluster-tilting subcategories of abelian (resp. exact) categories are $n$-abelian (resp. $n$-exact). These results allow to construct several examples of $n$-abelian and $n$-exact categories. Conversely, we prove that $n$-abelian categories satisfying certain mild assumptions can be realized as $n$-cluster-tilting subcategories of abelian categories. In analogy with a classical result of Happel, we show that the stable categ…
In this paper we define Gabriel monads as the idempotent monads associated to exact reflective localizations in Abelian categories and characterize them by a simple set of properties. The coimage of a Gabriel monad is a Serre quotient category. The Gabriel monad induces an equivalence between its coimage and its image, the localizing subcategory of local objects.
The goal of this thesis is to define a 2-dimensional version of abelian categories, where symmetric 2-groups play the role that abelian groups played in 1-dimensional algebra. Abelian and 2-abelian groupoid enriched categories are defined and it is proved that homology can be developed in them, including the existence of a long exact sequence of homology corresponding to an extension of chain complexes. This generalises known results for symmetric 2-groups. The examples include, in addition to symmetric 2-groups, the 2-modules on a 2-ring, which form a 2-abelian groupoid enriched category. Mor…
The purpose of this article is to study the existence of Deligne's tensor product of abelian categories by comparing it with the well-known ten- sor product of finitely cocomplete categories. The main result states that the former exists precisely when the latter is an abelian category, and moreover in this case both tensor products coincide. An example of two abelian categories whose Deligne tensor product does not exist is given.
We consider three (2-)categories and their (anti-)equivalence. They are the category of small abelian categories and exact functors, the category of definable additive categories and interpretation functors, the category of locally coherent abelian categories and coherent morphisms. These categories link algebra, model theory and "geometry".
We prove general results about completeness of cotorsion theories and existence of covers and envelopes in locally presentable abelian categories, extending the well-established theory for module categories and Grothendieck categories. These results are then applied to the categories of contramodules over topological rings, which provide examples and counterexamples.
We study the transfer of (dual) relative CS-Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories. We consider fully faithful functors as well as adjoint pairs of functors. We give several applications to Grothendieck categories and, in particular, to (graded) module and comodule categories.
We introduce and study (dual) strongly relative Rickart objects in abelian categories. We prove general properties, we analyze the behaviour with respect to (co)products, and we study the transfer via functors. We also give applications to Grothendieck categories, (graded) module categories and comodule categories. Our theory of (dual) strongly relative Rickart objects may be employed in order to study strongly relative regular objects and (dual) strongly relative Baer objects in abelian categories.
We describe (braided-)commutative algebras with non-degenerate multiplicative form in certain braided monoidal categories, corresponding to abelian metric Lie algebras (so-called Drinfeld categories). We also describe local modules over these algebras and classify commutative algebras with finite number of simple local modules.
The stable module category of a selfinjective algebra is triangulated, but need not have any nontrivial $t$-structures, and in particular, full abelian subcategories need not arise as hearts of a $t$-structure. The purpose of this paper is to investigate full abelian subcategories of triangulated categories whose exact structures are related, and more precisely, to explore relations between invariants of finite-dimensional selfinjective algebras and full abelian subcategories of their stable module categories.
Ladders of recollements of abelian categories are introduced, and used to address three general problems. Ladders of a certain height allow to construct recollements of triangulated categories, involving derived categories and singularity categories, from abelian ones. Ladders also allow to tilt abelian recollements, and ladders guarantee that properties like Gorenstein projective or injective are preserved by some functors in abelian recollements. Breaking symmetry is crucial in developing this theory.
