We classify the "quotients" of a tannakian category in which the objects of a tannakian subcategory become trivial, and we examine the properties of such quotient categories.
The principal aim of this note is to give an elementary proof of the fact that any two fiber functors of a Tannakian category are locally isomorphic. This builds on an idea of Deligne concerning scalar extensions of Tannakian categories and implements a proof strategy which Deligne attributes to Grothendieck. Besides categorical generalities, the proof merely relies on basic properties of exterior powers and the classification of finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain. Using related ideas (but less elementary means) we also present an alternative characterization of Tannakian…
We introduce and develop the notion of scalar extension for abelian categories. Given a field extension F'/F, to every F-linear abelian category A satisfying a suitable finiteness condition we associate an F'-linear abelian category A' and an exact F-linear functor t: A --> A'. This functor is universal among F-linear right exact functors with target an F'-linear abelian category. We discuss various basic properties of this concept, among others compatibilities with multilinear endofunctors such as tensor products, and the permanence of favourable properties of the functors and categories invo…
Given a rigid tensor-triangulated category and a vector space valued homological functor for which the Künneth isomorphism holds, we construct a universal graded-Tannakian category through which the given homological functor factors. We use this to (unconditionally) construct graded-Tannakian categories of pure motives associated to a fixed Weil cohomology theory, with a fiber functor realizing the given cohomology theory. For $\ell$-adic cohomology and a ground field which is algebraic over a finite field, this category is Tannakian. In this case, we obtain in particular motivic Galois groups…
In this paper we generalize Tannakian formalism to fiber functors over general tensor categories. We will show that (under some technical conditions) if the fiber functor has a section, then the source category is equivalent to the category of comodules over a Hopf algebra in the target category. We will also give a description of this Hopf algebra using the notion of framed objects.
We explain why every non-trivial exact tensor functor on the triangulated category of mixed motives over a field F has zero kernel, if one assumes "all" motivic conjectures. In other words, every non-zero motive generates the whole category up to the tensor triangulated structure. Under the same assumptions, we also give a complete classification of triangulated étale motives over F with integral coefficients, up to the tensor triangulated structure, in terms of the characteristic and the orderings of F.
We determine internal characterisations for when a tensor category is (super) tannakian, for fields of positive characteristic. This generalises the corresponding characterisations in characteristic zero by P. Deligne. We also explore notions of Frobenius twists in tensor categories in positive characteristic.
We provide conditions for a category with a fiber functor to be equivalent to the category of representations of a linear differential algebraic group. This generalizes the notion of a neutral Tannakian category used to characterize the category of representations of a linear algebraic group.
For a large class of geometric objects, the passage to categories of quasi-coherent sheaves provides an embedding in the 2-category of abelian tensor categories. The notion of weakly Tannakian categories introduced by the author gives a characterization of tensor categories in the image of this embedding. However, this notion requires additional structure to be present, namely a fiber functor. For the case of classical Tannakian categories in characteristic zero, Deligne has found intrinsic properties - expressible entirely within the language of tensor categories - which are necessary and suf…
We study several classes of braided fusion categories, and prove that they all contain nontrivial Tannakian subcategories. As applications, we classify some fusion categories in terms of solvability and group-theoreticality.
We consider essentially small rigid tensor categories (not necessarily abelian) which have a faithful tensor functor to a category of super vector spaces over a field of characteristic 0. It is shown how to construct for each such tensor category a super Tannakian hull, which is a universal faithful tensor functor to a super Tannakian category over a field of characteristic 0. The construction is analogous to the passage from an integral domain to its field of fractions.
A fundamental theorem of P. Deligne (2002) states that a pre-Tannakian category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero admits a fiber functor to the category of supervector spaces (i.e., is the representation category of an affine proalgebraic supergroup) if and only if it has moderate growth (i.e., the lengths of tensor powers of an object grow at most exponentially). In this paper we prove a characteristic p version of this theorem. Namely we show that a pre-Tannakian category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0 admits a fiber functor into the Verlinde…
Strong similarities have been long observed between the Galois (Categories Galoisiennes) and the Tannaka (Categories Tannakiennes) theories of representation of groups. In this paper we construct an explicit (neutral) Tannakian context for the Galois theory of atomic topoi, and prove the equivalence between its fundamental theorems. Since the theorem is known for the Galois context, this yields, in particular, a proof of the fundamental (recognition) theorem for a new Tannakian context. This example is different from the additive cases or their generalization, where the theorem is known to hol…
We prove an analog of the Künneth formula for the groups of minimal non-degenerate extensions arXiv:1602.05936 of symmetric fusion categories. We describe in detail the structure of the group of minimal extensions of a pointed super-Tannakian fusion category. This description resembles that of the third cohomology group of a finite abelian group. We explicitly compute this group in several concrete examples.
We lay the foundations for a model theoretic study of proalgebraic groups. Our axiomatization is based on the tannakian philosophy. Through a tensor analog of skeletal categories we are able to consider neutral tannakian categories with a fibre functor as many-sorted first order structures. The class of diagonalizable proalgebraic groups is analyzed in detail. We show that the theory of a diagonalizable proalgebraic group $G$ is determined by the theory of the base field and the theory of the character group of $G$. Some initial steps towards a comprehensive study of types are also made.
We introduce, for a symmetric fusion category $\mathcal{A}$ with Drinfeld centre $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$, the notion of $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$-crossed braided tensor category. These are categories that are enriched over $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$ equipped with a symmetric tensor product, while being braided monoidal with respect to the usual tensor product on $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$. In the Tannakian case where $\mathcal{A}=\mathbf{Rep}(G)$ for a finite group $G$, the 2-category of $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{A})$-crossed braided categories is shown to be equivalent to the 2-category of $G…
Under certain conditions, a scheme can be reconstructed from its category of quasi-coherent sheaves. The Tannakian reconstruction theorem provides another example where a geometric object can be reconstructed from an associated category, in this case the category of its finite dimensional representations. Lurie's result that the pseudofunctor which sends a geometric stack to its category of quasi-coherent sheaves is fully faithful provides a conceptual explanation for why this works. In this paper we prove a generalized Tannakian recognition theorem, in order to characterize a part of the imag…
We study the question when a category of ind-objects is abelian. Our answer allows a further generalization of the notion of weakly Tannakian categories introduced by the author. As an application we show that, under suitable conditions, the category of coherent sheaves on the product of two schemes with the resolution property is given by the Deligne tensor product of the categories of coherent sheaves of the two factors. To do this we prove that the class of quasi-compact and semi-separated schemes with the resolution property is closed under fiber products.
The purpose of this paper is to develop an efficient computational model for Abelian categories of coherent sheaves over certain classes of varieties. These categories are naturally described as Serre quotient categories. Hence, our approach relies on describing general Serre quotient categories in a constructive way which leads to an efficient computer implementation.
In this note, we define a recollement of additive categories, and prove that such a recollement can induce a recollement of their quotient categories. As an application, we get a recollement of quotient triangulated categories induced by mutation pairs.
The Verdier quotient $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{S}$ of a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$ by a triangulated subcategory $\mathcal{S}$ is defined by a universal property with respect to triangulated functors out of $\mathcal{T}$. However, $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{S}$ is in fact a localization of $\mathcal{T}$, i.e., it is obtained from $\mathcal{T}$ by formally inverting a class of morphisms. We establish the analogous result for small stable quasi-categories. As an application, we explore the compatibility of Verdier quotients with symmetric monoidal structures. In particular, we record a few usefu…
We give a sufficient condition for a Verdier quotient $\ct/\cs$ of a triangulated category $\ct$ by a thick subcategory $\cs$ to be realized inside of $\ct$ as an ideal quotient. As applications, we deduce three significant results by Buchweitz, Orlov and Amiot--Guo--Keller.
A natural question in the theory of Tannakian categories is: What if you don't remember $\Forget$? Working over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$, we prove that an answer to this question is given by the functor represented by the étale fundamental groupoid $π_1(\spec(R))$, i.e.\ the separable absolute Galois group of $R$ when it is a field. This gives a new definition for étale $π_1(\spec(R))$ in terms of the category of $R$-modules rather than the category of étale covers. More generally, we introduce a new notion of "commutative 2-ring" that includes both Grothendieck topoi and symmetric mo…
Keller introduced a notion of quotient of a differential graded category modulo a full differential graded subcategory which agrees with Verdier's notion of quotient of a triangulated category modulo a triangulated subcategory. This work is an attempt to further develop his theory. More than a half of the text is devoted to an overview of "well known" definitions and results. As a result, the e-print is essentially self-contained.
We classify certain subcategories in quotients of exact categories. In particular, we classify the triangulated and thick subcategories of an algebraic triangulated category, i.e. the stable category of a Frobenius category.
We propose a general method to construct new triangulated categories, relative stable categories, as additive quotients of a given one. This construction enhances results of Beligiannis, particularly in the tensor-triangular setting. We prove a birationality result showing that the original category and its relative stable quotient are equivalent on some open piece of their spectrum.
We define mutation pair in an n-angulated category and prove that given such a mutation pair, the corresponding quotient category carries a natural n-angulated structure. This result generalizes a theorem of Iyama-Yoshino in classical triangulated category. As an application, we obtain that the quotient category of a Frobenius n-angulated category is also an n-angulated category.
For a full subcategory B of a unital A_infinity-category C a quotient unital A_infinity-category `C/B' is defined. For differential graded categories such quotient is constructed by V.Drinfeld. Our construction is explicit and uses freely generated A_infinity-categories. The quotient D=`C/B' represents the A_infinity-2-functor A \mapsto A_\infty^u(C,A)_{modulo B}, which associates with a given unital A_infinity-category A the A_infinity-category of unital A_infinity-functors C -> A, whose restriction to B is contractible.
We prove that some subquotient categories of exact categories are abelian. This generalizes a result by Koenig-Zhu in the case of (algebraic) triangulated categories. As a particular case, if an exact category B with enough projectives and injectives has a cluster tilting subcategory M, then B/M is abelian. More precisely, it is equivalent to the category of finitely presented modules over the stable category of M.
Let C be a triangulated category with a Serre functor S and X a non-zero contravariantly finite rigid subcategory of C. Then X is cluster tilting if and only if the quotient category C/X is abelian and S(X)=X[2]. As an application, this result generalizes work by Beligiannis.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a essentially small abelian category and $\mathcal{C}$ be a Serre subcategory of $\mathcal{A}$. Consider the quotient functor $q:\mathcal{A}\rightarrow \mathcal{A}/\mathcal{C}$. For an object $A\in \mathcal{A}$ and a non-negative integer $k$ we investigate when the natural map $q_{X,A}^i: \rm Ext^i_{\mathcal{A}}(X,A)\rightarrow Ext^i_{\mathcal{A}/\mathcal{C}}(q(X),q(A))$ is invertible for every $X\in \mathcal{A}$ and every $i\in\{0,1,\cdots,k\}$. In the end we give an application of the main theorem.
We study properties of a category after quotienting out a suitable chosen group of isomorphisms on each object. Coproducts in the original category are described in its quotient by our new weaker notion of a 'phased coproduct'. We examine these and show that any suitable category with them arises as such a quotient of a category with coproducts. Motivation comes from projective geometry, and also quantum theory where they describe superpositions in the category of Hilbert spaces and continuous linear maps up to global phase. The quotients we consider also generalise those induced by categorica…
We study abelian envelopes for pseudo-tensor categories with the property that every object in the envelope is a quotient of an object in the pseudo-tensor category. We establish an intrinsic criterion on pseudo-tensor categories for the existence of an abelian envelope satisfying this quotient property. This allows us to interpret the extension of scalars and Deligne tensor product of tensor categories as abelian envelopes, and to enlarge the class of tensor categories for which all extensions of scalars and tensor products are known to remain tensor categories. For an affine group scheme G, …
We examine various triangulated quotients of the module category of a finite group. We demonstrate that these are not compactly generated by the simple modules and present a modification of Rickard's Idempotent Module construction that accounts for this. When the localizing subcategories are sufficiently nice we give an explicit description of the objects in the Bousfield triangles for modules that are direct limits of sequences of finite dimensional modules in terms of homotopy colimits.
We introduce the concept of a pseudo-cluster tilting subcategory from the viewpoint of the fact that the quotient of an exact category by a cluster tilting subcategory is an abelian category. We prove that the quotients in the case of pseudo-cluster tilting are always semi-abelian. In addition, it is abelian if and only if some self-orthogonal conditions are satisfied. We revisit the abelian quotient category of conflations by splitting ones, and get that there exists a unique exact substructure such that it is a cluster quotient.
In order to study the problems of extending an action along a quotient of the acted object and along a quotient of the acting object, we investigate some properties of the fibration of points. In fact, we obtain a characterization of protomodular categories among quasi-pointed regular ones, and, in the semi-abelian case, a characterization of strong protomodular categories. Eventually, we return to the initial questions by stating the results in terms of internal actions.
We construct an A_infinity-category D(C|B) from a given A_infinity-category C and its full subcategory B. The construction is similar to a particular case of Drinfeld's quotient of differential graded categories. We use D(C|B) to construct an A_infinity-functor of K-injective resolutions of a complex. The conventional derived category is obtained as the 0-th cohomology of the quotient of differential graded category of complexes over acyclic complexes.
We consider the ordinary category Span(C) of (isomorphism classes of) spans of morphisms in a category C with finite limits as needed, composed horizontally via pullback, and give a general criterion for a quotient of Span(C) to be an allegory. In particular, when C carries a pullback-stable, but not necessarily proper, (E, M)-factorization system, we establish a quotient category Span_E(C) that is isomorphic to the category Rel_M(C) of M-relations in C, and show that it is a (unitary and tabular) allegory precisely when M is a class of monomorphisms in C. Without this restriction, one can sti…
In this paper, we consider a kind of ideal quotient of an extriangulated category such that the ideal is the kernel of a functor from this extriangulated category to an abelian category. We study a condition when the functor is dense and full, in another word, the ideal quotient becomes abelian. Moreover, a new equivalent characterization of cluster-tilting subcategories is given by applying homological methods according to this functor. As an application, we show that in a connected 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category B, a functorially finite, extension closed subcategory T of B is cluster til…

In our previous article, we constructed an abelian category from any torsion pair on a triangulated category. This generalizes the heart of a $t$-structure and the ideal quotient by a cluster tilting subcategory. Recently, generalizing the quotient by a cluster tilting subcategory, Buan and Marsh showed that an integral preabelian category can be constructed as a quotient, from a rigid object in a triangulated category with some conditions. In this article, by considering a pair of torsion pairs, we make a simultaneous genralization of these two constructions.
We put cluster tilting in ageneral framework by showing that any quotient of a triangulated category modulo a tilting subcategory (that is, a maximal one-orthogonal subcategory) carries an abelian structure. These abelian quotients turn out to be module categories of Goreisten algebras of dimension at most one.
We consider the universal pivotal, symmetric, monoidal, $\Bbbk$-linear category, generated by a Schurian object with a skew-symmetric multiplication, and study some of its quotients. We show that these quotients give rise to either vector product algebras or representation categories of exceptional Lie algebras.
In this paper we study quotients of posets by group actions. In order to define the quotient correctly we enlarge the considered class of categories from posets to loopfree categories: categories without nontrivial automorphisms and inverses. We view group actions as certain functors and define the quotients as colimits of these functors. The advantage of this definition over studying the quotient poset (which in our language is the colimit in the poset category) is that the realization of the quotient loopfree category is more often homeomorphic to the quotient of the realization of the origi…
We consider the quotient of an exact or one-sided exact category $\mathcal{E}$ by a so-called percolating subcategory $\mathcal{A}$. For exact categories, such a quotient is constructed in two steps. Firstly, one localizes $\mathcal{E}$ at a suitable class $S_\mathcal{A} \subseteq \operatorname{Mor}(\mathcal{E})$ of morphisms. The localization $\mathcal{E}[S_\mathcal{A}^{-1}]$ need not be an exact category, but will be a one-sided exact category. Secondly, one constructs the exact hull $\mathcal{E}{/\mkern-6mu/} \mathcal{A}$ of $\mathcal{E}[S_\mathcal{A}^{-1}]$ and shows that this satisfies th…
Let k be any field. J-P. Serre proved that the spectrum of the Grothendieck ring of the k-representation category of a group is connected, and that the same holds in characteristic zero for the representation category of a Lie algebra over k. We say that a tensor category C over k is virtually indecomposable if its Grothendieck ring contains no nontrivial central idempotents. We prove that the following tensor categories are virtually indecomposable: Tensor categories with the Chevalley property; representation categories of affine group schemes; representation categories of formal groups; rep…
We show that the quotient of a Hom-finite triangulated category C by the kernel of the functor Hom(T, -), where T is a rigid object, is preabelian. We further show that the class of regular morphisms in the quotient admit a calculus of left and right fractions. It follows that the Gabriel-Zisman localisation of the quotient at the class of regular morphisms is abelian. We show that it is equivalent to the category of finite dimensional modules over the endomorphism algebra of T in C.
In this article, we show that the localization of an extriangulated category by a multiplicative system satisfying mild assumptions can be equipped with a natural, universal structure of an extriangulated category. This construction unifies the Serre quotient of abelian categories and the Verdier quotient of triangulated categories. Indeed we give such a construction for a bit wider class of morphisms, so that it covers several other localizations appeared in the literature, such as Rump's localization of exact categories by biresolving subcategories, localizations of extriangulated categories…
We define filter quotients of $(\infty,1)$-categories and prove that filter quotients preserve the structure of an elementary $(\infty,1)$-topos and in particular lift the filter quotient of the underlying elementary topos. We then specialize to the case of filter products of $(\infty,1)$-categories and prove a characterization theorem for equivalences in a filter product. Then we use filter products to construct a large class of elementary $(\infty,1)$-toposes that are not Grothendieck $(\infty,1)$-toposes. Moreover, we give one detailed example for the interested reader who would like to see…
