The initial stage of star formation is a complex area study because of its high density and low temperature. Under such conditions, many molecules become depleted from the gas phase by freezing out onto dust grains. However, the deuterated species could remain gaseous and are thus ideal tracers. We investigate the gas dynamics and NH$_2$D chemistry in eight massive pre/protocluster clumps. We present NH$_2$D 1$_{11}$-1$_{01}$ (at 85.926 GHz), NH$_3$ (1, 1) and (2, 2) observations in the eight clumps using the PdBI and the VLA, respectively. We find that the distribution between deuterium fractionation and kinetic temperature shows a number density peak at around $T_{\rm kin}=16.1$ K, and the NH$_2$D cores are mainly located at a temperature range of 13.0 to 22.0 K. We detect seven instances of extremely high deuterium fractionation of $1.0 \leqslant D_{\rm frac} \leqslant 1.41$. We find that the NH$_2$D emission does not appear to coincide exactly with either dust continuum or NH$_3$ peak positions, but often surrounds the star-formation active regions. This suggests that the NH$_{2}$D has been destroyed by the central young stellar object (YSO) due to its heating. The detected NH$_2$D lines are very narrow with a median width of $\rm 0.98\pm0.02 km/s$. The extracted NH$_2$D cores are gravitationally bound ($α_{\rm vir} < 1$), are likely prestellar or starless, and can potentially form intermediate-mass or high-mass stars. Using NH$_3$ (1, 1) as a dynamical tracer, we find very complicated dynamical movement, which can be explained by a combined process with outflow, rotation, convergent flow, collision, large velocity gradient, and rotating toroids. High deuterium fractionation strongly depends on the temperature condition. NH$_2$D is a poor evolutionary indicator of high-mass star formation in evolved stages, but a useful tracer in the starless and prestellar cores.
The initial conditions of stellar protocluster formation. II. A catalogue of starless and protostellar clumps embedded in IRDCs in the Galactic longitude range 15<l<55
A grid of 20 millions 3-1100$μ$m SED models is presented for synthetic young clusters embedded in dense clumps. The models depend on four primary parameters: the clump mass M$_{clump}$ and dust temperature T$_{dust}$, the fraction of mass f$_{core}$ locked in dense cores, and the age of the clump t$_{SF}$. We populate the YSO clusters using the IMF from Kroupa(2001) and the YSOs SED models grid of Robitaille et al. (2006). We conduct extensive testing of SED fitting using a simulated dataset and we find that M$_{clump}$ essentially depends on the submillimeter portion of the SED, while T$_{dus…
Molecular Outflows From the Protocluster, Serpens South
The ALMA Survey of Star Formation and Evolution in Massive Protoclusters with Blue Profiles (ASSEMBLE): Core Growth, Cluster Contraction, and Primordial Mass Segregation
Massive dense clumps in the Large Magellanic Cloud can be an important laboratory to explore the formation of populous clusters. We report multiscale ALMA observations of the N159W-North clump, which is the most CO-intense region in the galaxy. High-resolution CO isotope and 1.3 mm continuum observations with an angular resolution of $\sim$0."25($\sim$0.07 pc) revealed more than five protostellar sources with CO outflows within the main ridge clump. One of the thermal continuum sources, MMS-2, shows especially massive/dense nature whose total H$_2$ mass and peak column density are $\sim$10$^{4…
We study the gas kinematics and dynamics of the massive protocluster G286.21+0.17 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array using spectral lines of $C^{18}O$(2-1), $N_2D^+$(3-2), $DCO^+$(3-2) and $DCN$(3-2). On the parsec clump scale, $C^{18}O$ emission appears highly filamentary around the systemic velocity. $N_2D^+$ and $DCO^+$ are more closely associated with the dust continuum. $DCN$ is strongly concentrated towards the protocluster center, where no or only weak detection is seen for $N_2D^+$ and $DCO^+$, possibly due to this region being at a relatively evolved evolutionary st…
We present a study of outflows at extremely early stages of high-mass star formation obtained from the ALMA Survey of 70 $μ\rm m$ dark High-mass clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). Twelve massive 3.6$-$70 $μ\rm m$ dark prestellar clump candidates were observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 6. Forty-three outflows are identified toward 41 out of 301 dense cores using the CO and SiO emission lines, yielding a detection rate of 14%. We discover 6 episodic molecular outflows associated with low- to high-mass cores, indicating that episodic outflows (and therefore…
We present new continuum and molecular line data from the ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions (ATOMS) survey for the two protoclusters, G12.42+0.50 and G19.88-0.53. The 3 mm continuum maps reveal seven cores in each of the two globally contracting protoclusters. These cores satisfy the radius-mass relation and the surface mass density criteria for high-mass star formation. Similar to their natal clumps, the virial analysis of the cores suggests that they are undergoing gravitational collapse ($\rm α_{vir} << 2$). The clump to core scale fragmentation is investiga…

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is fundamental for many areas of astrophysics, but its origin remains poorly understood. It may be inherited from the core mass function (CMF) or arise as a result of more chaotic, competitive accretion. Dense, gravitationally bound cores are seen in molecular clouds and some observations have suggested that the CMF is similar in shape to the IMF, though translated to higher masses by a factor of $\sim3$. Here we measure the CMF in 28 dense clumps within 3.5 kpc that are likely to be central regions of massive protoclusters, observed via $1.3\:{\rm{mm}}$…
Galaxy clusters in the local universe descend from high-redshift overdense regions known as protoclusters. The large gas reservoirs and high rate of galaxy interaction in protoclusters are expected to trigger star-formation activity and luminous SMBH accretion in the host galaxies. We investigated the AGN content of a gas-rich and starbursting protocluster at $z=4$, known as the Distant Red Core (DRC). We observed with Chandra (139 ks) the 13 identified members of the structure, and searched for luminous and possibly obscured AGN among them. We also tested whether a hidden AGN can power the $L…

We present $\sim10-40\,μ$m SOFIA-FORCAST images of 14 intermediate-mass protostar candidates as part of the SOFIA Massive (SOMA) Star Formation Survey. We build spectral energy distributions (SEDs), also utilizing archival Spitzer, Herschel and IRAS data. We then fit the SEDs with radiative transfer (RT) models of Zhang & Tan (2018), based on Turbulent Core Accretion theory, to estimate key protostellar properties. With the addition of these intermediate-mass sources, SOMA protostars span luminosities from $\sim10^{2}-10^{6}\:L_{\odot}$, current protostellar masses from $\sim0.5-30\:M_{\odot}$…
(Abridged) The initial physical conditions of high-mass stars and protoclusters remain poorly characterized. To this end we present the first targeted ALMA 1.3mm continuum and spectral line survey towards high-mass starless clump candidates, selecting a sample of 12 of the most massive candidates ($400-4000\, M_\odot$) within 5 kpc. The joint 12+7m array maps have a high spatial resolution of $\sim 3000\, \mathrm{au}$ ($\sim 0.8^{\prime\prime}$) and have point source mass-completeness down to $\sim 0.3\, M_\odot$ at $6σ$ (or $1σ$ column density sensitivity of $1.1\times10^{22}\, \mathrm{cm^{-2…
We derive the mass-radius relation and mass function of molecular clumps in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and interpret them in terms of the simple feedback model proposed by Fall, Krumholz, and Matzner (FKM). Our work utilizes the dendrogram-based catalog of clumps compiled by Wong et al. from $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO maps of six giant molecular clouds in the LMC observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The Magellanic Clouds are the only external galaxies for which this type of analysis is possible at the necessary spatial resolution ($\sim1$ pc). We find that the mass-radiu…
We present new observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 1 (LAB1) in the SSA22 protocluster region ($z$ = 3.09) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) and the Keck Multi-object Spectrometer for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE). By applying matched filtering to the KCWI datacube, we have created a narrow-band Ly$α$ image and identified several prominent features. By comparing the spatial distributions and intensities of Ly$α$ and H$β$, we find that recombination of photo-ionized HI gas followed by resonant scattering is sufficient to explain all the observed Ly$α$/H$β$ ratios. We further decode the…
