We present a new high-resolution study of pre-protocluster regions in tracers exclusively probing the coldest and dense gas (NH_2D). The data are used to constrain the chemical, thermal, kinematic, and physical conditions (i.e., densities) in G29.96e and G35.20w. NH_3, NH_2D, and continuum emission were mapped using the VLA, and PdBI. In particular, NH_2D is a unique tracer of cold, precluster gas at high densities, while NH_3 traces both the cold and warm gas of modest-to-high densities. In G29.96e, Spitzer images reveal two massive filaments, one of them in extinction (infrared dark cloud). We observe very low line widths in NH_3 (FWHM <1km/s). These multi-wavelength, high-resolution observations of high-mass pre-protocluster regions show that the target regions are characterized by (i) turbulent Jeans fragmentation of massive clumps into cores (from a Jeans analysis); (ii) cores and clumps that are "over-bound/subvirial", i.e. turbulence is too weak to support them against collapse, meaning that (iii) some models of monolithic cloud collapse are quantitatively inconsistent with data; (iv) accretion from the core onto a massive star, which can (for observed core sizes and velocities) be sustained by accretion of envelope material onto the core, suggesting that (similar to competitive accretion scenarios) the mass reservoir for star formation is not necessarily limited to the natal core; (v) high deuteration ratios ([NH_2D/NH_3]>6%), which make the above discoveries possible; (vi) and the destruction of NH_2D toward embedded stars. Interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are expected to be strongly processed by vacuum ultraviolet photons. Here, we report experimental studies on the ionization and fragmentation of coronene (C24H12), ovalene (C32H14) and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC; C42H18) cations by exposure to synchrotron radiation in the range of 8--40 eV. The results show that for small PAH cations such as coronene, fragmentation (H-loss) is more important than ionization. However, as the size increases, ionization becomes more and more important and for the HBC cation, ionization dominates. These re…
We present high resolution (R = 75,000-100,000) mid-infrared spectra of the high-mass embedded young star IRS 1 in the NGC 7538 star-forming region. Absorption lines from many rotational states of C2H2, 13C12CH2, CH3, CH4, NH3, HCN, HNCO, and CS are seen. The gas temperature, column density, covering factor, line width, and Doppler shift for each molecule are derived. All molecules were fit with two velocity components between -54 and -63 km/s. We find high column densities (~ 10e16 cm^2) for all the observed molecules compared to values previously reported and present new results for CH3 and …
We combine Herschel observations of a total of 12 sources to construct the most uniform survey of HF and H2O in our Galactic disk. Both molecules are detected in absorption along all sight lines. The high spectral resolution of the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) allows us to compare the HF and H2O distributions in 47 diffuse cloud components sampling the disk. We find that the HF and H2O velocity distributions follow each other almost perfectly and establish that HF and H2O probe the same gas-phase volume. Our observations corroborate theoretical predictions that HF is a sen…
Herschel surveys of Galactic clouds support a paradigm for low-mass star formation in which dense filaments play a crucial role. The detailed fragmentation properties of star-forming filaments remain poorly understood, however, and the validity of the filament paradigm in the high-mass regime is still unclear. To investigate the density/velocity structure of the filament in the high-mass star-forming region NGC6334, we conducted ALMA observations in the 3mm continuum and the N2H+(1-0) line at ~3arcsec resolution. The filament was detected in both tracers. We identified 26 cores at 3mm and 5 ve…
A promising supermassive black hole seed formation channel is that of direct collapse from primordial gas clouds. We perform a suite of 3D hydrodynamics simulations of an isolated turbulent gas cloud to investigate conditions conducive to forming massive black hole seeds via direct collapse, probing the impact of cloud metallicity, gas temperature floor and cooling physics on cloud fragmentation. We find there is no threshold in metallicity which produces a sharp drop in fragmentation. When molecular cooling is not present, metallicity has little effect on fragmentation. When molecular cooling…
We study low-metallicity star formation with a set of high-resolution hydrodynamics simulations for various gas metallicities over a wide range $0$--$10^{-3} \ {\rm Z}_{\bigodot}$. Our simulations follow non-equilibrium chemistry and radiative cooling by adopting realistic elemental abundance and dust size distribution. We examine the condition for the fragmentation of collapsing clouds (cloud fragmentation; CF) and of accretion discs (disc fragmentation; DF). We find that CF is suppressed due to rapid gas heating accompanied with molecular hydrogen formation even with efficient dust cooling f…
Massive clumps tend to fragment into clusters of cores and condensations, some of which form high-mass stars. In this work, we study the structure of massive clumps at different scales, analyze the fragmentation process, and investigate the possibility that star formation is triggered by nearby HII regions. We present a high angular resolution study of a sample of 8 massive proto-cluster clumps. Combining infrared data, we use few-arcsecond resolution radio- and millimeter interferometric data to study their fragmentation and evolution. Our sample is unique in the sense that all the clumps hav…

We present high angular resolution 1.1mm continuum and spectroscopic ALMA observations of the well-known massive proto-cluster Mon R 2 IRS 3.The continuum image at 1.1mm shows two components, IRS 3 A and IRS 3 B, that are separated by $\sim$0.65$"$. We estimate that IRS 3 A is responsible of $\sim$80 % of the continuum flux, being the most massive component. We explore the chemistry of IRS 3 A based on the spectroscopic observations. In particular, we have detected intense lines of S-bearing species such as SO, SO$_2$, H$_2$CS and OCS, and of the Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) methyl formate…
A gas-grain time dependent chemical code, UCL\_CHEM, has been used to investigate the possibility of using chemical tracers to differentiate between the possible formation mechanisms of brown dwarfs. In this work, we model the formation of a pre-brown dwarf core through turbulent fragmentation by following the depth-dependent chemistry in a molecular cloud through the step change in density associated with an isothermal shock and the subsequent freefall collapse once a bound core is produced. Trends in the fractional abundance of molecules commonly observed in star forming cores are then explo…
We study gravitational collapse of low-metallicity gas clouds and the formation of protostars by three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. Grain growth, non-equilibrium chemistry, molecular cooling, and chemical heating are solved in a self-consistent manner for the first time. We employ the realistic initial conditions for the abundances of metal and dust, and the dust size distribution obtained from recent Population III supernova calculations. We also introduce the state-of-the-art particle splitting method based on the Voronoi tessellation and achieve an extremely high mass resolution of…
The initial stage of star formation is a complex area study because of its high density and low temperature. Under such conditions, many molecules become depleted from the gas phase by freezing out onto dust grains. However, the deuterated species could remain gaseous and are thus ideal tracers. We investigate the gas dynamics and NH$_2$D chemistry in eight massive pre/protocluster clumps. We present NH$_2$D 1$_{11}$-1$_{01}$ (at 85.926 GHz), NH$_3$ (1, 1) and (2, 2) observations in the eight clumps using the PdBI and the VLA, respectively. We find that the distribution between deuterium fract…
Magnetic fields are ubiquitously observed in the interstellar medium (ISM) of present-day star-forming galaxies with dynamically relevant energy densities. Using three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the supernova (SN) driven ISM in the flux-freezing approximation (ideal MHD) we investigate the impact of the magnetic field on the chemical and dynamical evolution of the gas, fragmentation and the formation of molecular clouds. We follow the chemistry with a network of six species (H$^{+}$, H, H$_2$, C$^+$, CO, free electrons) including local shielding effects. We find that…
The discovery of a hyper metal-poor star with total metallicity of $\le 10^{-5}$ Z$_\odot$, has motivated new investigations of how such objects can form from primordial gas polluted by a single supernova. In this paper we present a shock-cloud model which simulates a supernova remnant interacting with a cloud in a metal-free environment at redshift $z=10$. Pre-supernova conditions are considered, which include a multiphase neutral medium and H II region. A small dense clump ($n=100$ cm$^{-3}$), located 40 pc from a 40 M$_\odot$ metal-free star, embedded in a $n=10$ cm$^{-3}$ ambient cloud. Th…
Context. The process of mass accretion in the earliest phases of star formation is still not fully understood: Does the accretion rate smoothly decline with the age of the protostar or are there short, intermittent accretion bursts? Aims. We aim to explore whether or not the observed C$^{18}$O and N$_2$H$^+$ emission pattern towards the VeLLO IRAM 04191+1522 can be understood in the framework of a scenario where the emission is chemically tracing a past accretion burst. Methods. We used high-angular-resolution Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) observations of C$^{18}$O and N$_2$H$^+$ toward…

We present a multiwavelength study of the filamentary infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G333.73+0.37. The region contains two distinct mid-infrared sources S1 and S2 connected by dark lanes of gas and dust. Cold dust emission from the IRDC is detected at seven wavelength bands and we have identified 10 high density clumps in the region. The physical properties of the clumps such as temperature: 14.3-22.3 K and mass: 87-1530 M_sun are determined by fitting a modified blackbody to the spectral energy distribution of each clump between 160 micron and 1.2 mm. The total mass of the IRDC is estimated to be…
We present the first mid-infrared (MIR) detections of HNC and H13CN in the interstellar medium, and numerous, resolved HCN rovibrational transitions. Our observations span 12.8 to 22.9 micron towards the hot core Orion IRc2, obtained with the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Exceptional, ~5 km/s, resolution distinguishes individual rovibrational transitions of the HNC and HCN P, Q, and R branches; and the H13CN R branch. This allows direct measurement of the species' excitation temperatures, column densities, and relative a…
We present experimental constraints on the insertion of oxygen atoms into methane to form methanol in astrophysical ice analogs. In gas-phase and theoretical studies this process has previously been demonstrated to have a very low or non-existent energy barrier, but the energetics and mechanisms have not yet been characterized in the solid state. We use a deuterium UV lamp filtered by a sapphire window to selectively dissociate O2 within a mixture of O2:CH4 and observe efficient production of CH3OH via O(1D) insertion. CH3OH growth curves are fit with a kinetic model, and we observe no tempera…
High-angular resolution observations of dense molecular cores show that these cores can be clumpier at smaller scales, and that some of these clumps can also be unbound or transient. The use of chemical models of the evolution of the molecular gas provides a way to probe the physical properties of the clouds. We study the properties of the clump and inter-clump medium in the starless CS core in LDN 673 by carrying out a molecular line survey with the IRAM 30-m telescope toward two clumps and two inter-clump positions. We also observed the 1.2-mm continuum with the MAMBO-II bolometer at IRAM. T…
It has been shown that fragmentation within self-gravitating, turbulent molecular clouds ("turbulent fragmentation") can naturally explain the observed properties of protostellar cores, including the core mass function (CMF). Here, we extend recently-developed analytic models for turbulent fragmentation to follow the time-dependent hierarchical fragmentation of self-gravitating cores, until they reach effectively infinite density (and form stars). We show that turbulent fragmentation robustly predicts two key features of the IMF. First, a high-mass power-law scaling very close to the Salpeter …
We study the influence of gas metallicity, turbulence, and non-equilibrium chemistry on the evolution of the two-phase interstellar medium (warm and cold atomic phases), and thereby constrain the initial conditions for star formation prevailing in turbulent gas. We perform high-resolution simulations in three dimensions, including a realistic non-equilibrium treatment of the ionization state of the gas, and examine both driven and decaying turbulence. This allows us to explore variations in the metallicity Z. In this paper, we study solar metallicity, Z=Z_sun, and low metallicity, Z=1d-3 Z_sun…
Atoms and molecules, and in particular CO, are important coolants during the evolution of interstellar star-forming gas clouds. The presence of dust grains, which allow many chemical reactions to occur on their surfaces, strongly impacts the chemical composition of a cloud. At low temperatures, dust grains can lock-up species from the gas phase which freeze out and form ices. In this sense, dust can deplete important coolants. Our aim is to understand the effects of freeze-out on the thermal balance and the evolution of a gravitationally bound molecular cloud. For this purpose, we perform 3D h…
We present the experimental InfraRed Multiple Photon Dissociation (IRMPD) spectrum and fragmentation mass spectrum of the irregular, cationic PAH dibenzo[a,l]pyrene (C$_{24}$H$_{14}^+$) in the 6-40 $μ$m / 250-1650 cm$^{-1}$ range. The use of the the Free-Electron Laser for IntraCavity Experiments (FELICE) enabled us to record its Far-InfraRed (FIR) spectrum for the first time. We aim to understand how irregularity affects the infrared spectrum and fragmentation chemistry of PAHs. Dibenzo[a,l]pyrene is an asymmetric, non-planar molecule, for which all vibrational modes are in principle IR-activ…
