We present new observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 1 (LAB1) in the SSA22 protocluster region ($z$ = 3.09) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) and the Keck Multi-object Spectrometer for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE). By applying matched filtering to the KCWI datacube, we have created a narrow-band Ly$α$ image and identified several prominent features. By comparing the spatial distributions and intensities of Ly$α$ and H$β$, we find that recombination of photo-ionized HI gas followed by resonant scattering is sufficient to explain all the observed Ly$α$/H$β$ ratios. We further decode the spatially-resolved Ly$α$ profiles using both moment maps and Monte-Carlo radiative transfer (MCRT) modeling. By fitting a set of multiphase, 'clumpy' models to the observed Ly$α$ profiles, we are able to reasonably constrain many parameters, namely the HI number density in the inter-clump medium (ICM), the cloud volume filling factor, the random velocity and outflow velocity of the clumps, the HI outflow velocity of the ICM and the local systemic redshift. Our model has successfully reproduced the diverse Ly$α$ morphologies at different locations, and the main results are: (1) The observed Ly$α$ spectra require relatively few clumps per line-of-sight as they have significant fluxes at the line center; (2) The velocity dispersion of the clumps yields a significant broadening of the spectra as observed; (3) The clump bulk outflow can also cause additional broadening if the HI in the ICM is optically thick; (4) The HI in the ICM is responsible for the absorption feature close to the Ly$α$ line center.
We simulate an equal-mass merger of two Milky Way-size galaxy discs with moderate gas fractions at parsec-scale resolution including a new model for radiative cooling and heating in a multi-phase medium, as well as star formation and feedback from supernovae. The two discs initially have a $2.6\times10^6\mathrm{~M_{\odot}}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH) embedded in their centers. As the merger completes and the two galactic cores merge, the SMBHs form a a pair with a separation of a few hundred pc that gradually decays. Due to the stochastic nature of the system immediately following the merg…
We present new spectroscopic observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 2 ($z \sim$ 3.1). We observed extended Ly$α$ emission in three distinct regions, where the highest Ly$α$ surface brightness (SB) center is far away from the known continuum sources. We searched through the MOSFIRE slits that cover the high Ly$α$ SB regions, but were unable to detect any significant nebular emission near the highest SB center. We further mapped the flux ratio of the blue peak to the red peak and found it is anti-correlated with Ly$α$ SB with a power-law index of $\sim$ -0.4. We used radiative transfer models wi…
We perform Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Monte-Carlo radiative transfer calculations on a suite of $2500$ models of multiphase, outflowing media, which are characterized by $14$ parameters. We focus on the Ly$α$ spectra emerging from these media, and investigate which properties are dominant in shaping the emerging Ly$α$ profile. Multiphase models give rise to a wide variety of emerging spectra, including single, double and triple peaked spectra. We find that the dominant parameters in shaping the spectra include (i) the cloud covering factor, $f_c$, in agreement with earlier studies, and (ii) the tempera…
Lyman-Alpha (Ly$α$) is the strongest emission line in the Universe and is frequently used to detect and study the most distant galaxies. Because Lya is a resonant line, photons typically scatter prior to escaping; this scattering process complicates the interpretation of Ly$α$ spectra, but also encodes a wealth of information about the structure and kinematics of neutral gas in the galaxy. Modeling the Ly$α$ line therefore allows us to study tiny-scale features of the gas, even in the most distant galaxies. Curiously, observed Ly$α$ spectra can be modeled successfully with very simple, homogen…
Many studies have considered the roles of clouds, outflows, and turbulence in producing the broad emission and absorption lines in the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, these are often treated as separate or even competing models. Here, we consider the possibility that AGN clouds are condensations formed within the thermally unstable zones of outflows and then compare the typical sizes of such condensations with the injection scale $k_0^{-1} \sim L_0$ of turbulence, where $L_0$ is assumed to be the scale height of a representative global outflow model. We find that for broad l…
We perform a suite of simulations with realistic gravity and thermal balance in shells to quantify the role of the ratio of cooling time to the free-fall time ($t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$) and the amplitude of density perturbations ($δρ/ρ$) in the production of multiphase gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM). Previous idealized simulations, focussing on small amplitude perturbations in the intracluster medium (ICM), found that cold gas can condense out of the hot ICM in global thermal balance when the background $t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff} \lesssim 10$. Recent observations suggest the presence of…
Synergistic Radiative Transfer Modeling of MgII and Lyα Emission in Multiphase, Clumpy Galactic Environments: Application to Low-Redshift Lyman Continuum Leakers
Cluster galaxies moving through the intracluster medium (ICM) are expected to lose some of their interstellar medium (ISM) through ISM-ICM interactions. We perform high resolution (40 pc) three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of a galaxy undergoing ram pressure stripping including radiative cooling in order to investigate stripping of a multiphase medium. The clumpy, multiphase ISM is self-consistently produced by the inclusion of radiative cooling, and spans six orders of magnitude in gas density. We find no large variations in the amount of gas lost whether or not cooling is involved,…
Ultrafast outflows (UFOs) from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are thought to regulate the growth of SMBHs and host galaxies, resulting in a number of observational correlations. We present high-resolution numerical simulations of the impact of a thermalized UFO on the ambient gas in the inner part of the host galaxy. Our results depend strongly on whether the gas is homogeneous or clumpy. In the former case all of the ambient gas is driven outward rapidly as expected based on commonly used energy budget arguments, while in the latter the flows of mass and energy decouple. Carrying most of th…
We present UV to NIR spectroscopic observations of the quasar J0015+1842 and its proximate molecular absorber at z=2.631. The [OIII] emission line of the quasar is composed of a broad (FWHM~1600 km/s), spatially-unresolved component, blueshifted by ~600 km/s from a narrow, spatially-resolved component (FWHM~650 km/s). The wide, blueshifted, unresolved component is consistent with the presence of outflowing gas in the nuclear region. The narrow component can be further decomposed into a blue and a red blob with velocity width of several hundred km/s each, seen ~5 pkpc on opposite spatial locati…
There is increasing evidence that the highly ionized multiphase components of AGN disk winds may be due to thermal instability. The ions responsible for forming the observed X-ray absorption lines may only exist in relatively cold clumps that can be identified with the so-called 'warm absorbers'. Here we calculate synthetic absorption lines for such warm absorbers from first principles by combining 2D hydrodynamic solutions of a two-phase medium with a dense grid of photoionization models to determine the detailed ionization structure of the gas. Our calculations reveal that cloud disruption, …

Existing ubiquitously in the Universe with the highest luminosity, the Lyman-$α$ emission line encodes abundant physical information about the gaseous medium it interacts with. Nevertheless, the resonant nature of Ly$α$ complicates the radiative transfer (RT) modeling of the line profile, making the extraction of physical properties of the surrounding gaseous medium notoriously difficult. In this paper, we revisit the problem of deciphering the Ly$α$ emission line with RT modeling. We reveal intrinsic parameter degeneracies in the widely-used shell model in the optically thick regime for both …

We present a set of hydrodynamical/Nbody controlled simulations of isolated gas rich galaxies that self-consistently include SN feedback and a detailed chemical evolution model, both tested in cosmological simulations. The initial conditions are motivated by the observed star forming galaxies at z ~ 2-3. We find that the presence of a multiphase interstellar media in our models promotes the growth of disc instability favouring the formation of clumps which in general, are not easily disrupted on timescales compared to the migration time. We show that stellar clumps migrate towards the central …
We use high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical AMR simulations to predict the characteristics of La emission from the cold gas streams that fed galaxies in massive haloes at high redshift. The La luminosity in our simulations is powered by the release of gravitational energy as gas flows from the intergalactic medium into the halo potential wells. The UV background contributes only <20% to the gas heating. The La emissivity is due primarily to electron-impact excitation cooling radiation in gas ~2x10^4K. We calculate the La emissivities assuming collisional ionisation equilibrium (CIE) at …
Substantial evidence in the last few decades suggests that outflows from supermassive black holes (SMBH) may play a significant role in the evolution of galaxies.Large-scale outflows known as warm absorbers (WA) and fast disk winds known as ultra-fast outflows (UFO) are commonly found in the spectra of many Seyfert galaxies and quasars, and a correlation has been suggested between them. Recent detections of low ionization and low column density outflows, but with a high velocity comparable to UFOs, challenge such initial possible correlations. Observations of UFOs in AGN indicate that their en…
We report the detection at 850um of the central source in SSA22-LAB1, the archetypal Lyman-alpha Blob (LAB), a 100kpc-scale radio-quiet emission-line nebula at z=3.1. The flux density of the source, $S_{850}=4.6\pm1.1$mJy implies the presence of a galaxy, or group of galaxies, with a total luminosity of $L_{\rm IR}\approx10^{12}L_\odot$. The position of an active source at the center of a ~50kpc-radius ring of linearly polarized Ly-alpha emission detected by Hayes et al. (2011) suggests that the central source is leaking Ly-alpha photons preferentially in the plane of the sky, which undergo sc…
Motivated by observational and theoretical work which both suggest very small scale ($\lesssim 1\,$pc) structure in the circum-galactic medium of galaxies and in other environments, we study Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) radiative transfer in an extremely clumpy medium with many "clouds" of neutral gas along the line of sight. While previous studies have typically considered radiative transfer through sightlines intercepting $\lesssim 10$ clumps, we explore the limit of a very large number of clumps per sightline (up to $f_{\mathrm{c}} \sim 1000$). Our main finding is that, for covering factors greater th…
A three-dimensional Monte Carlo Ly-alpha radiative transfer (RT) code, named LaRT, is developed to study the Ly-alpha RT and the Wouthuysen-Field (WF) effect. Using the code, we calculate the line profile of Ly-alpha radiation within the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM), with a particular emphasis on gas at low densities. We show that the WF effect is in action: the central portion of the line profile tends to approach a small slice of the Planck function with a color temperature equal to the kinetic temperature of the gas, even in a system with an optical thickness as low as tau_0~100-500…

Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) is a powerful astrophysical probe. Not only is it ubiquitous at high redshifts, it is also a resonant line, making Ly$α$ photons scatter. This scattering process depends on the physical conditions of the gas through which Ly$α$ propagates, and these conditions are imprinted on observables such as the Ly$α$ spectrum and its surface brightness profile. In this work, we focus on a less-used observable capable of probing any scattering process: polarization. We implement the density matrix formalism of polarization into the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code tlac. This allows us…
