In this work, we investigate the system of three species ecological model involving one predator-prey subsystem coupling with a generalist predator with negative effect on the prey. Without diffusive terms, all global dynamics of its corresponding reaction equations are proved analytically for all classified parameters. With diffusive terms, the transitions of different spatial homogeneous solutions, the traveling wave solutions, are showed by higher dimensional shooting method, the Wazewski method. Some interesting numerical simulations are performed, and biological implications are given.
This paper studies the traveling wave solutions to a three species competition cooperation system. The existence of the traveling waves is investigated via monotone iteration method. The upper and lower solutions come from either the waves of KPP equation or those of certain Lotka Volterra system. We also derive the asymptotics and uniqueness of the wave solutions. The results are then applied to a Lotka Volterra system with spatially averaged and temporally delayed competition.
We prove the existence and uniqueness, for wave speeds sufficiently large, of monotone traveling wave solutions connecting stable to unstable spatial equilibria for a class of $N$-dimensional lattice differential equations with unidirectional coupling. This class of lattice equations includes some spatial discretizations for hyperbolic conservation laws with a source term as well as a subclass of monotone systems. We obtain a variational characterization of the critical wave speed above which monotone traveling wave solutions are guaranteed to exist. We also discuss non-monotone waves, and the…
We rigorously prove the existence of traveling fronts in neural field models with lateral inhibition coupling types and smooth sigmoidal firing rates. With Heaviside firing rates as our base point (where unique traveling fronts exist), we repeatedly apply the implicit function theorem in Banach spaces to provide a non-monotone version of the homotopy approach originally proposed by Ermentrout and McLeod (1993) in their seminal study of monotone fronts in purely excitatory models. By comparing smooth and Heaviside firing rates, we develop global wave speed and profile comparisons that guide our…

Using an abstract scheme of monotone semiflows, the existence of bistable traveling wave solutions of a competitive recursion system with Ricker nonlinearity is established. The traveling wave solutions formulate the strong inter-specific actions between two competitive species.
In this paper, we investigate the stability and uniqueness of generalized traveling wave solutions of lattice Fisher-KPP equations with general time and space dependence. We first show the existence, uniqueness, and stability of strictly positive entire solutions of such equations. Next, we show the stability and uniqueness of generalized traveling waves connecting the unique strictly positive entire solution and the trivial solution zero. Applying the general stability and uniqueness theorem, we then prove the existence, stability and uniqueness of periodic traveling wave solutions of lattice…
In this paper we revisit the existence of traveling waves for delayed reaction diffusion equations by the monotone iteration method. We show that Perron Theorem on existence of bounded solution provides a rigorous and constructive framework to find traveling wave solutions of reaction diffusion systems with time delay. The method is tried out on two classical examples with delay: the predator-prey and Belousov-Zhabotinskii models.
It is well-known that the existence of traveling wave solutions for reaction-diffusion partial differential equations can be proved by showing the existence of certain heteroclinic orbits for related autonomous planar differential equations. We introduce a method for finding explicit upper and lower bounds of these heteroclinic orbits. In particular, for the classical Fisher-Kolmogorov equation we give rational upper and lower bounds which allow to locate these solutions analytically and with very high accuracy.
This paper is concerned with the existence of traveling wave solutions for diffusive two-species Lotka-Volterra systems with delay in both the reaction and diffusion terms without monotonicity. We extend the partial or cross monotone iteration method to systems that satisfy the partial quasi-monotone condition via construction appropriate upper and lower solutions. This is done by using Schauder's fixed point theorem.
This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions of delayed reaction-diffusion systems. By using Schauder's fixed point theorem, the existence of traveling wave solutions is reduced to the existence of generalized upper and lower solutions. Using the technique of contracting rectangles, the asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions for delayed diffusive systems is obtained. To illustrate our main results, the existence, nonexistence and asymptotic behavior of positive traveling wave solutions of diffusive Lotka-Volterra competition systems with distributed delays are established…
This paper is concerned with the conditions of existence and nonexistence of traveling wave solutions (TWS) for a class of discrete diffusive epidemic models. We find that the existence of TWS is determined by the so-called basic reproduction number and the critical wave speed: When the basic reproduction number R0 greater than 1, there exists a critical wave speed c* > 0, such that for each c >= c * the system admits a nontrivial TWS and for c < c* there exists no nontrivial TWS for the system. In addition, the boundary asymptotic behaviour of TWS is obtained by constructing a suitable Lyapun…
This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions of an integro-difference competition system, of which the purpose is to model the coinvasion-coexistence process of two competitors with age structure. The existence of nontrivial traveling wave solutions is obtained by constructing generalized upper and lower solutions. The asymptotic and nonexistence of traveling wave solutions are proved by combining the theory of asymptotic spreading with the idea of contracting rectangle.
This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions for integro-difference systems of higher order. By using Schauder fixed point theorem, the existence of traveling wave solutions is reduced to the existence of generalized upper and lower solutions. Then the asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions is studied by the idea of contracting rectangles. To illustrate our results, the traveling wave solutions of three systems are considered, which completes some known results.
The existence of traveling and standing waves is investigated for chains of coupled pendula with periodic boundary conditions. The results are proven by applying topological methods to subspaces of symmetric solutions. The main advantage of this approach comes from the fact that only properties of the linearized forces are required. This allows to cover a wide range of models such as Newton's cradle, the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice and the Toda lattice.
We establish the existence of a stable foliation in the vicinity of a traveling front solution for systems of reaction diffusion equations in one space dimension that arise in the study of chemical reactions models and solid fuel combustion. In this way we complement the orbital stability results from earlier papers by A. Ghazaryan, S. Schecter and Y. Latushkin. The essential spectrum of the differential operator obtained by linearization at the front touches the imaginary axis. In spaces with exponential weights, one can shift the spectrum to the left. We study the nonlinear equation on the i…
In 1992 G. B. Ermentrout and J. B. McLeod published a landmark study of traveling wave fronts for a differential-integral equation modeling a neural network. Since then a number of authors have extended the model by adding an additional equation for a "recovery variable", thus allowing the possibility of traveling pulse type solutions. In a recent paper G. Faye gave perhaps the first rigorous proof of the existence (and stability) of a traveling pulse solution for such a model. The excitatory weight function J used in this work allowed the system to be reduced to a set of four coupled ODEs, an…
We consider a reaction-diffusion equation with nonlocal anisotropic diffusion and a linear combination of local and nonlocal monostable-type reactions in a space of bounded functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Using the properties of the corresponding semiflow, we prove the existence of monotone traveling waves along those directions where the diffusion kernel is exponentially integrable. Among other properties, we prove continuity, strict monotonicity and exponential integrability of the traveling wave profiles.
We use geometric singular perturbation techniques combined with an action functional approach to study traveling pulse solutions in a three-component FitzHugh--Nagumo model. First, we derive the profile of traveling $1$-pulse solutions with undetermined width and propagating speed. Next, we compute the associated action functional for this profile from which we derive the conditions for existence and a saddle-node bifurcation as the zeros of the action functional and its derivatives. We obtain the same conditions by using a different analytical approach that exploits the singular limit of the …
In this paper, a brief review of delay population models and their applications in ecology is provided. The inclusion of diffusion and nonlocality terms in delay models has given more capabilities to these models enabling them to capture several ecological phenomena such as the Allee effect, waves of invasive species and spatio-temporal competitions of interacting species. Moreover, recent advances in the studies of traveling and stationary wave solutions of delay models are outlined. In particular, the existence of stationary and traveling wave solutions of delay models, stability of wave sol…
This paper is devoted to the study of traveling waves for monotone evolution systems of bistable type. Under an abstract setting, we establish the existence of bistable traveling waves for discrete and continuous-time monotone semiflows. This result is then extended to the cases of periodic habitat and weak compactness, respectively. We also apply the developed theory to four classes of evolution systems.
This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions of a reaction-diffusion equation with state-dependent delay. When the birth function is monotone, the existence and nonexistence of monotone traveling wave solutions are established. When the birth function is not monotone, the minimal wave speed of nontrivial traveling wave solutions is obtained. The results are proved by the construction of upper and lower solutions and application of the fixed point theorem.
In this manuscript, we prove the existence of slow and fast traveling wave solutions in the original Gatenby--Gawlinski model. We prove the existence of a slow traveling wave solution with an interstitial gap. This interstitial gap has previously been observed experimentally, and here we derive its origin from a mathematical perspective. We give a geometric interpretation of the formal asymptotic analysis of the interstitial gap and show that it is determined by the distance between a layer transition of the tumor and a dynamical transcritical bifurcation of two components of the critical mani…
The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation, which was derived as a simplification of the Hodgkin-Huxley model for nerve impulse propagation, has been extensively studied as a paradigmatic activator-inhibitor system. We consider the version of this system in which two agents diffuse at an equal rate. Using geometric singular perturbation theory, we prove the existence and stability of fast traveling pulses. The stability proof makes use of the Maslov index--an invariant of symplectic geometry--to count unstable eigenvalues for the linearization about the wave. The calculation of the Maslov index is carried o…
We consider the gravity water waves system with a periodic one-dimensional interface in infinite depth and we establish the existence and the linear stability of small amplitude, quasi-periodic in time, traveling waves. This provides the first existence result of quasi-periodic water waves solutions bifurcating from a \emph{completely resonant} elliptic fixed point. The proof is based on a Nash-Moser scheme, Birkhoff normal form methods and pseudo-differential calculus techniques. We deal with the combined problems of \emph{small divisors} and the \emph{fully-nonlinear} nature of the equations…

The present paper is devoted to the study of stability, uniqueness and recurrence of generalized traveling waves of reaction-diffusion equations in time heterogeneous media of ignition type, whose existence has been proven by the authors of the present paper in a previous work. It is first shown that generalized traveling waves exponentially attract wave-like initial data. Next, properties of generalized traveling waves, such as space monotonicity and exponential decay ahead of interface, are obtained. Uniqueness up to space translations of generalized traveling waves is then proven. Finally, …

Traveling wavetrains in generalized two-species predator-prey models and two-component reaction-diffusion equations are considered. The stability of the fixed points of the traveling wave ODEs (in the usual "spatial" variable) is considered. For general functional forms of the nonlinear prey birthrate/prey deathrate or reaction terms, a Hopf bifurcation is shown to occur at two different critical values of the traveling wave speed. The post-bifurcation dynamics is investigated for five different functional forms of the nonlinearities. In cases where the bifurcation is supercritical, the post-b…
The existence of traveling front solutions to bistable lattice differential equations in the absence of a comparison principle is studied. The results are in the spirit of those in Bates, Chen, and Chmaj in[1], but are applicable to vector equations and to more general limiting systems. An abstract result on the persistence of traveling wave solutions is obtained and is then applied to lattice differential equations with repelling first and/or second neighbor interactions and to some problems with infinite range interactions.
We derive a precise energy stability criterion for smooth periodic waves in the Degasperis--Procesi (DP) equation. Compared to the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, the number of negative eigenvalues of an associated Hessian operator changes in the existence region of smooth perodic waves. We utilize properties of the period function with respect to two parameters in order to obtain a smooth existence curve for the family of smooth periodic waves of a fixed period. The energy stability condition is derived on parts of this existence curve which correspond to either one or two negative eigenvalues of…
We study traveling wave solutions of an equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude arising as a shallow water approximation of the Euler equations for inviscid, incompressible and homogenous fluids. We obtain solitary waves of elevation and depression, including a family of solitary waves with compact support, where the amplitude may increase or decrease with respect to the wave speed. Our approach is based on techniques from dynamical systems and relies on a reformulation of the evolution equation as an autonomous Hamiltonian system which facilitates an explicit expression for bounded o…
