The momentum space subtraction (MOM) scheme is one of the most frequently used renormalization schemes in perturbative QCD (pQCD) theory. In the paper, we make a detailed discussion on the gauge dependence of the pQCD prediction under the MOM scheme. Conventionally, there is renormalization scale ambiguity for the fixed-order pQCD predictions, which assigns an arbitrary range and an arbitrary error for the fixed-order pQCD prediction. The principle of maximum conformality (PMC) adopts the renormalization group equation to determine the magnitude of the coupling constant and hence determines an effective momentum flow of the process, which is independent to the choice of renormalization scale. There is thus no renormalization scale ambiguity in PMC predictions. To concentrate our attention on the MOM gauge dependence, we first apply the PMC to deal with the pQCD series. We adopt the Higgs boson decay width, $Γ(H\to gg)$, up to five-loop QCD contributions as an example to show how the gauge dependence behaves before and after applying the PMC. It is found that the Higgs decay width $Γ(H\to gg)$ depends very weakly on the choices of the MOM schemes, being consistent with the renormalization group invariance. It is found that the gauge dependence of $Γ(H\to gg)$ under the $\rm{MOMgg}$ scheme is less than $\pm1\%$, which is the smallest gauge dependence among all the mentioned MOM schemes.
We present analytic results that describe fully-differential NNLO QCD corrections to deep-inelastic scattering processes within the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme. This is the last building block required for the application of this scheme to computations of NNLO QCD corrections to arbitrary processes at hadron colliders.
We present analytic formulas that describe fully-differential production of color-singlet final states in $q\bar q$ and $gg$ annihilation, including all the relevant partonic channels, through NNLO QCD. We work within the nested soft-collinear scheme which allows for fully local subtraction of infrared divergences. We demonstrate analytic cancellation of soft and collinear poles and present formulas for finite parts of all integrated subtraction terms. These results provide an important building block for calculating NNLO QCD corrections to arbitrary processes at hadron colliders within the ne…
We discuss an alternative subtraction scheme for NLO QCD calculations, which is based on the splitting kernels of an improved parton shower. As an example, we show results for the C parameter of the process e+ e- to 3 jets at NLO used for the verification of this scheme.
Within the framework of local analytic sector subtraction, we present the subtraction of next-to-leading-order QCD singularities for processes featuring massless coloured particles in the initial as well as in the final state. The features of the method are explained in detail, including the introduction of an optimisation procedure aiming at improving numerical stability at the cost of no extra analytic complexity. A numerical validation is provided for a variety of processes relevant to lepton as well as hadron colliders. This work constitutes a relevant step in view of the application of ou…
We present a fully differential description of a decay of a scalar Higgs boson into massive b-quarks valid at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We work within the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme extended to accommodate massive partons. We include the loop-induced contribution involving a Higgs coupling to a top quark. We test our calculation against results existing in the literature, comparing the predictions for the total decay width and jet rates.
We describe an implementation of a subtraction scheme in the nonrelativistic-QCD treatment of heavy-quarkonium production at next-to-leading-order in the strong-coupling constant, covering $S$- and $P$-wave bound states. It is based on the dipole subtraction in the massless version by Catani and Seymour and its extension to massive quarks by Phaf and Weinzierl. Important additions include the treatment of heavy-quark bound states, in particular due to the more complicated infrared-divergence structure in the case of $P$-wave states.
We present compact analytic formulas that describe the decay of colorless particles to both $q \bar q$ and $gg$ final states through next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD in the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme. In addition to their relevance for the description of decays like $V \to q \bar q'$, $V= Z,W$, $H \to b \bar b$ and $H \to gg$, these results provide an important building block for calculating NNLO QCD corrections to arbitrary processes at colliders within the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme.
In this work we extend the $q_T$-subtraction formalism, originally developed for QCD corrections, to the case of mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections, and apply it to the fully exclusive calculation of the ${\cal{O}}(α_sα)$ contribution to the production of an off-shell $Z$ boson in hadronic collisions. We present explicit results for the subtraction term and the hard factor, therefore providing all the ingredients needed for the application of the formalism up to ${\cal{O}}(α_sα)$. To study the phenomenological impact we consider the decay of the off-shell $Z$ boson into a pair of neutrinos, and…
We consider higher-order QCD corrections to the production of high-mass systems in hadron collisions within the transverse-momentum (q$_{\rm T}$) subtraction formalism. We present a method to consistently remove the linear power corrections in q$_{\rm T}$ which appears when fiducial kinematical cuts are applied on the final state system. We consider explicitly the case of fiducial cross sections for Drell-Yan lepton pair production at the Large Hadron Collider up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in QCD. We have implemented our method within the DYTurbo numerical program and w…
We discuss a modification of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) subtraction scheme based on the residue-improved sector decomposition that reduces the number of double-real emission sectors from five to four. In particular, a sector where energies and angles of unresolved particles vanish in a correlated fashion is redundant and can be discarded. This simple observation allows us to formulate a transparent iterative subtraction procedure for double-real emission contributions, to demonstrate the cancellation of soft and collinear singularities in an explicit and (almost) process-independ…
We obtain analytic results for integrated triple-collinear splitting functions that emerge as collinear counter-terms in the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme arXiv:1702.01352 . With these results, all integrated subtraction terms required for NNLO QCD computations within this scheme are known analytically. In addition to improving efficiency and numerical stability of practical computations, the availability of these results will contribute towards establishing a general NNLO QCD subtraction formula for generic hard scattering processes in hadron collisions, similar to C…
We consider higher-order QCD corrections to Higgs boson production through gluon-gluon fusion in the large top quark mass limit in hadron collisions. We extend the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) subtraction method to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) and combine it with the NNLO Higgs-plus-jet calculation to numerically compute differential infrared-safe observables at N$^3$LO for Higgs boson production in gluon fusion. To cancel the infrared divergences, we exploit the universal behaviour of the associated $q_T$ distributions in the small-$q_T$ region. We document all the necessary…
Subtraction schemes provide a systematic way to compute fully-differential cross sections beyond the leading order in the strong coupling constant. These methods make singular real-emission corrections integrable in phase space by the addition of suitable counterterms. Such counterterms may be defined using momentum mappings, which are parametrisations of the phase space that factorise the variables that describe the particles becoming unresolved in some infrared or collinear limit from the variables that describe an on-shell phase space for the resolved particles. In this work, we review exis…
We consider the double-soft limit of QCD amplitudes with two massive quarks in a back-to-back kinematics accompanied by two soft partons. We integrate analytically the respective double-soft eikonal functions over the phase space of the two soft partons. Within the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme, our results may serve as one of the integrated subtraction terms needed for the analytic and fully-differential description of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to colour-singlet decay into massive partons or to heavy-quark pair production.

Properly separating and subtracting renormalons in the framework of the operator product expansion (OPE) is a way to realize high precision computation of QCD effects in high energy physics. We propose a new method (FTRS method), which enables to subtract multiple renormalons simultaneously from a general observable. It utilizes a property of Fourier transform, and the leading Wilson coefficient is written in a one-parameter integral form whose integrand has suppressed (or vanishing) renormalons. The renormalon subtraction scheme coincides with the usual principal-value prescription at large o…
We consider QCD radiative corrections to top-quark pair production at hadron colliders. We use the $q_T$ subtraction formalism to perform a fully-differential computation for this process. Our calculation is accurate up to the next-to-leading order in QCD perturbation theory and it includes all the flavour off-diagonal partonic channels at the next-to-next-to-leading order. We present a comparison of our numerical results with those obtained with the publicly available numerical programs MCFM and Top++.
We discuss two recent developments of the sector-improved residue subtraction scheme for handling real radiation at NNLO in QCD. We present a new phase space construction which minimizes the number phase space configurations for subtraction terms and we rederive the four-dimensional formulation of the scheme.
We provide results for the one-loop triple-collinear color/spin-space splitting operators for the five possible processes, $q \to qq'\bar{q}'$, $q \to qq\bar{q}$, $q \to qgg$, $g \to gq\bar{q}$ and $g \to ggg$. The expressions are exact in dimensionally-regulated massless QCD up to a single integral, which we expand to second order in the dimensional-regularisation parameter. We also evaluate the related splitting functions. Our results are both sufficient and indispensable for the construction of subtraction and integrated-subtraction terms for triple-collinear singularities of one-loop doubl…
The proton-polarizability contribution to the muonic-hydrogen Lamb shift is a major source of theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of the proton charge radius. An empirical evaluation of this effect, based on the proton structure functions, requires a systematically improvable calculation of the "subtraction function", possibly using lattice QCD. We consider a different subtraction point, with the aim of accessing the subtraction function directly in lattice calculations. A useful feature of this subtraction point is that the corresponding contribution of the structure functions to the La…
To improve accuracy in calculating QCD effects, we propose a method for renormalon subtraction in the context of the operator-product expansion. The method enables subtracting renormalons of various powers in $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ efficiently and simultaneously from single-scale observables. We apply it to different observables and examine consistency with theoretical expectations.
A new method for local subtraction at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD is sketched, attempting to conjugate the minimal counterterm structure arising from a sector partition of the radiation phase space with the simplifications following from analytic integration of the counterterms.
We discuss next-to-next-to-leading order QCD results for Higgs, W-boson and Z-boson production in association with a jet in hadronic collisions, obtained using the recently developed N-jettiness subtraction method.
We introduce a more general set of kinematic renormalization schemes than the original momentum (MOM) subtraction schemes of Celmaster and Gonsalves. These new schemes will depend on a parameter $ω$ which tags the external momentum of one of the legs of the $3$-point vertex functions in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In each of the three new schemes we renormalize QCD in the Landau and maximal abelian gauges and establish the three loop renormalization group functions in each gauge. As an application we evaluate two critical exponents at the Banks-Zaks fixed point and demonstrate that their val…
We determine the strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z)$ from the static QCD potential by matching a lattice result and a theoretical calculation. We use a new theoretical framework based on operator product expansion (OPE), where renormalons are subtracted from the leading Wilson coefficient. We find that our OPE prediction can explain the lattice data at $Λ_{\rm QCD} r \lesssim 0.8$. This allows us to use a larger window in matching, which leads to a more reliable determination. We obtain $α_s(M_Z)=0.1179^{+0.0015}_{-0.0014}$.
