The changes a (negative) tidal charge causes at the phenomenon of superradiance which occurs around rotating black holes are investigated. This is made by computing the amplification factors of massless scalar waves being scattered by the black hole. It is shown that the increase of the tidal charge intensity leads to a considerable enhancement of energy extraction from near-extreme black holes. Such improvement results from the fact that extreme black holes with more negative tidal charges spin faster. Maximum amplification decreases with the increase of the tidal charge intensity if the angular momentum of the black hole per unit mass is fixed. The tidal charge may also change crucially the superradiance phenomenon of massless scalar waves causing maximum amplification to occur for $m > 1$ differently from the case of Kerr black holes.
Bargmann-Wigner equations are formulated to represent bosonic fields in terms of fermionic fields in curved spacetime. The superradiance phenomena of bosons and fermions in rotating black hole spacetime are studied in the Bargmann-Wigner formulation. As a result of the consistent description between scalar bosons and spinor fermions, superradiance phenomena of the type of positive frequency $(0<ω)$ and negative momentum near horizon $(p_{H}<0)$ are shown not to occur.
We analyze the amplification due to so-called superradiance from the scattering of pulses off rotating black holes as a numerical time evolution problem. We consider the "worst possible case" of scalar field pulses for which superradiance effects yield amplifications $< 1%$. We show that this small effect can be isolated by numerically evolving quasi-monochromatic, modulated pulses with a recently developed Teukolsky code. The results show that it is possible to study superradiance in the time domain, but only if the initial data is carefully tuned. This illustrates the intrinsic difficulties …
We study scalar test-field perturbations on top of a Kerr--black-bounce background, i.e. a family of rotating regular black holes and/or rotating traversable wormholes that can mimic Kerr black holes. We compute the quasi-normal modes for a massless field in both the regular black holes and wormhole branches, confirming the stability of the former and identifying a set of growing modes that renders the latter unstable. We further compute the superradiance amplification factors, for massless and massive fields, in the regular black hole branch, confirming that these objects superradiate, though…
Superradiant scattering processes are studied in general relativistic systems which, unlike rotating and/or charged black holes, do not exhibit an event horizon. Inspired by Zel'dovich's seminal works on the amplification of waves by a rotating cylinder, we analyse, in the context of General Relativity, the possibility of superradiance for electromagnetic waves reflecting off a rotating star and for charged scalar perturbations impinging on a charged sphere. The role of energy dissipation in these systems is analysed and compared with the role of the event horizon in black hole superradiance.
We discuss the late-time behaviour of a dynamically perturbed Kerr black hole. We present analytic results for near extreme Kerr black holes that show that the large number of virtually undamped quasinormal modes that exist for nonzero values of the azimuthal eigenvalue m combine in such a way that the field oscillates with an amplitude that decays as 1/t at late times. This prediction is verified using numerical time-evolutions of the Teukolsky equation. We argue that the observed behaviour may be relevant for astrophysical black holes, and that it can be understood in terms of the presence o…
Since the work of Hartle in the 1970s, and the subsequent development of the the Membrane Paradigm approach to black hole physics it has been widely accepted that superradiant scattering of gravitational waves bears strong similarities with the phenomenon of ``tidal friction'' (well-known from Newtonian gravity) operating in binary systems of viscous material bodies. In this paper we revisit the superradiance-tidal friction analogy within the context of ultracompact relativistic bodies. We advocate that as long as these bodies have non-zero viscosity they should undergo tidal friction that can…
We consider non-commutating Simpson-Visser spacetime and study the superradiance phenomena and the shadow cast by the back hole associated with this modified spacetime. We extensively study the different aspects of the black hole associated with the metric endowed with the corrections linked with non-commutative properties of spacetime. We study the superradiance effect, deviation of shape, size of the ergosphere, and the shadow of black hole in this extended situation and look into their variation taking different values Simpson-Visser parameter $\ell$ and non-commutative parameter $b$. We ha…
We study ``draining bathtub'' as an acoustic analogue of a three-dimensional rotating black hole. Rotating fluid near the sonic horizon necessarily gives rise to the superradiant modes, which are partially responsible for the thermodynamic quantities in this rotating vortex-like hole. Using the recently suggested thin-layer method overcoming some difficulties from the well-known brick-wall method, we explicitly calculate the free energy of the system by treating the superradiance carefully and obtain the desirable entropy formula.
Tidal effects have long ago locked the Moon in synchronous rotation with the Earth and progressively increase the Earth-Moon distance. This "tidal acceleration" hinges on dissipation. Binaries containing black holes may also be tidally accelerated, dissipation being caused by the event horizon - a flexible, viscous one-way membrane. In fact, this process is known for many years under a different guise: superradiance. In General Relativity, tidal acceleration is obscured by gravitational-wave emission. However, when coupling to light scalar degrees of freedom is allowed, an induced dipole momen…
Black holes provide a natural laboratory to study particle physics and astrophysics. When black holes are surrounded by matter fields, there will be plenty of phenomena which can have observational consequences, from which we can learn about the matter fields as well as black hole spacetime. In this work, we investigate the massive scalar field in the vicinity of a newly proposed rotating regular black hole inspired by quantum gravity. We will especially investigate how this non-singular spactime will affect the superradiance instability and quasinormal modes of the scalar filed. We derive the…
Rotational superradiance was predicted theoretically decades ago, and is chiefly responsible for a number of important effects and phenomenology in black-hole physics. However, rotational superradiance has never been observed experimentally. Here, with the aim of probing superradiance in the lab, we investigate the behavior of sound and surface waves in fluids resting in a circular basin at the center of which a rotating cylinder is placed. We show that with a suitable choice for the material of the cylinder, surface and sound waves are amplified. Two types of instabilities are studied: one se…
It is shown that the superradiance modes always exist in the radiation by the $(4+n)$-dimensional rotating black holes. Using a Bekenstein argument the condition for the superradiance modes is shown to be $0 < ω< m Ω$ for the scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational waves when the spacetime background has a single angular momentum parameter about an axis on the brane, where $Ω$ is a rotational frequency of the black hole and $m$ is an azimuthal quantum number of the radiated wave.
Using conformal field theory and localization tecniques we study the propagation of waves in gravity backgrounds described by Schrödinger like equations with Fuchsian singularities. Exact formulae for the connection matrices relating the asymptotic behaviour of the wave functions near the singularities are obtained in terms of braiding and fusion rules of the CFT. The results are applied to the study of quasi normal modes, absorption cross sections, amplification factors, echoes and tidal responses of black holes (BH) and exotic compact objects (ECO) in four and five dimensions. In particular,…
We consider a superradiance effect around rotating dilatonic black holes. We analyze two cases: one is an exact solution with the coupling constant $α=\sqrt{3}$, which effective action is reduced from the 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory, and the other is a slowly rotating dilatonic black holes with arbitrary coupling constant. We find that there exists a critical value ($α\sim 1$), which is predicted from a superstring model, and the superradiant emission rate with coupling larger than the critical value becomes much higher than the Kerr-Newman case ($α=0$) in the maximally charged limit. Co…
We investigate the stability of $D$ dimensional singly rotating Myers-Perry-AdS black holes under superradiance against scalar field perturbations. It is well known that small four dimensional rotating or charged Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes are unstable against superradiance instability of a scalar field. Recent works extended the existence of this instability to five dimensional rotating charged AdS black holes or static charged AdS black holes in arbitrary dimensions. In this work we analytically prove that, rotating small AdS black holes in arbitrary dimensions also show superradiance …
The propagation of electromagnetic plane waves with negative phase velocity (NPV) in the ergosphere of a rotating black hole has recently been reported. A comparison of NPV propagation and superradiance is presented. We show that, although both phenomenons involve negative energy densities, there are two significant differences between them.
In this paper we invstigate the possibility of the acoustic analogue of a phenomenon like superradiance, that is, the amplification of a sound wave by reflection from the ergo-region of a rotating acoustic black hole in the fluid "draining bathtub" model in the presence of a desclination be amplified or reduced in agreement with the value of the deficit angle.
We investigate the effect of superradiance shielding for the analogue rotating black holes simulated by optical vortices by calculating the radial motion of massless particles in such spacetime background. We add the conditions $E<LΩ_{r_{e}}$ and $L>0$ to judge the classically forbidden region of superradiance. It is found that the superradiance forbidden region exists near the static limit inside the ergosphere, which will limit the classical Penrose process for the particles with some specific energies and angular momenta. Once these particles satisfying the superradiance conditions aremeasur…
We discuss the relation between the superradiance phenomenon and the instability of rotating black holes in higher dimensions. In particular, we point out that the superradiant instability of a massless scalar field around a simply rotating Kerr-adS black hole implies the gravitational instability of that black hole for tensor-type perturbations.
In 2016, the Nottingham group detected the rotational superradiance effect. While this experiment demonstrated the robustness of the superradiance process, it still lacks a complete theoretical description due to the many effects at stage in the experiment. In this paper, we shine new light on this experiment by deriving an estimate of the reflection coefficient in the dispersive regime by means of a WKB analysis. This estimate is used to evaluate the reflection coefficient spectrum of counter rotating modes in the Nottingham experiment. Our finding suggests that the vortex flow in the superra…
Particles or waves scattered from a rotating black hole can be amplified through the process of Penrose superradiance, though this cannot currently be observed in an astrophysical setting. However, analogue gravity studies can create generic rotating geometries exhibiting an ergoregion, and this led to the first observation of Penrose superradiance as the over-reflection of water waves from a rotating fluid vortex. Here we theoretically demonstrate that Penrose superradiance arises naturally in the field of nonlinear optics. In particular, we elucidate the mechanism by which a signal beam can …
Inertial motion superradiance, the emission of radiation by an initially unexcited system moving inertially but superluminally through a medium, has long been known. Rotational superradiance, the amplification of radiation by a rotating rigid object, was recognized much later, principally in connection with black hole radiances. Here we review the principles of inertial motion superradiance and prove thermodynamically that the Ginzburg--Frank condition for superradiance coincides with the condition for superradiant amplification of already existing radiation. Examples we cite include a new typ…
In this thesis we study the phenomenon of superradiance and its implications to the stability of black-holes (BH) and perfect-fluid stars. Superradiance is a radiation enhancement process that involves rotating dissipative systems. In BH spacetimes, superradiance is due to dissipation at the event horizon, with interesting associated phenomena, namely floating orbits and BH-bombs. BH superradiance is a very interdisciplinary topic, and its study allows us to obtain important results in the area of particle physics. The scattering of a scalar field by a rotating BH leads to the formation of qua…
We have considered the divergence structure in the brick-wall model for the statistical mechanical entropy of a quantum field in thermal equilibrium with a black hole which {\it rotates}. Especially, the contribution to entropy from superradiant modes is carefully incorporated, leading to a result for this contribution which corrects some previous errors in the literature. It turns out that the previous errors were due to an incorrect quantization of the superradiant modes. Some of main results for the case of rotating BTZ black holes are that the entropy contribution from superradiant modes i…
It is a well-known fact that compact gravitating objects admit bound state configurations for massive bosonic fields. In this work we describe a new class of superradiant instabilities of axion bound states in neutron star magnetospheres. The instability arises from the mixing of axion and photon modes in the magnetic field of the neutron star which extract energy from the rotating magnetosphere. Unlike for black holes, where the dissipation required for superradiance is provided by an absorbative horizon, the non-hermitian dynamics in this paper come from the resistivity in the stellar magnet…
We consider scalar field perturbations of the asymptotically Gödel 5-dimensional charged rotating black holes with two equal angular momenta. It is shown that the spectrum of proper oscillations of the perturbation includes superradiant unstable modes. The reason for the instability is the confining Dirichlet boundary condition at the asymptotically far region of the Gödel Universe. The confining box makes superradiant modes extract rotational energy from the black hole and, after repeated reflections from the black hole, grow unboundedly. A similar instability takes place for rotating black h…
Rotating small AdS black holes exhibit the superradiant instability to low-frequency scalar perturbations, which is amenable to a complete analytic description in four dimensions. In this paper, we extend this description to all higher dimensions, focusing on slowly rotating charged AdS black holes with a single angular momentum. We divide the spacetime of these black holes into the near-horizon and far regions and find solutions to the scalar wave equation in each of these regions. Next, we perform the matching of these solutions in the overlap between the regions, by employing the idea that …
Rotational superradiance affects the dynamics of many rotating systems in nature, through either stimulated or spontaneous extraction of energy and angular momentum. By now, this process is well-studied in the relativistic setting, where systems are intrinsically dispersion-free. In many condensed matter systems, however, dispersion is an unavoidable aspect of the description for the short wavelength modes. For these systems, how might one expect superradiance to be modified? In this work, an answer to this question is provided using an illustrative example. The scattering of linear excitation…
We construct the external metric of a slowly rotating, tidally deformed material body in general relativity. The tidal forces acting on the body are assumed to be weak and to vary slowly with time, and the metric is obtained as a perturbation of a background metric that describes the external geometry of an isolated, slowly rotating body. The tidal environment is generic and characterized by two symmetric-tracefree tidal moments E_{ab} and B_{ab}, and the body is characterized by its mass M, its radius R, and a dimensionless angular-momentum vector χ^a << 1. The perturbation accounts for all c…
In the presence of massive bosonic degrees of freedom, rotational superradiance can trigger an instability that spins down black holes. This leads to peculiar gravitational-wave signatures and distribution in the spin-mass plane, which in turn can impose stringent constraints on ultralight fields. Here, we demonstrate that there is an analogous spindown effect for conducting stars. We show that rotating stars amplify low frequency electromagnetic waves, and that this effect is largest when the time scale for conduction within the star is of the order of a light crossing time. This has interest…
Superradiance in black holes is well-understood but a general treatment for superradiance in stars has until now been lacking. This is surprising given the ease with which we can observe isolated neutron stars and the array of signatures which would result from stellar superradiance. In this work, we present the first systematic pipeline for computing superradiance rates in rotating stars. Our method can be used with any Lagrangian describing the interaction between the superradiant field and the constituents of the star. Our scheme falls into two parts: firstly we show how field theory at fin…
The metric outside a compact body deformed by a quadrupolar tidal field is universal up to its Love numbers, constants which encode the tidal response's dependence on the body's internal structure. For a non-rotating body, the deformed external geometry is characterized by the familiar gravitational Love numbers $K_2^{\text{el}}$ and $K_2^{\text{mag}}$. For a slowly rotating body, these must be supplemented by rotational-tidal Love numbers, which measure the response to couplings between the body's spin and the external tidal field. By integrating the interior field equations, I find that the …
In this thesis we study several dynamical processes involving black holes in four and higher dimensions. First, using perturbative techniques, we compare the massless and massive scalar radiation emitted by a particle radially infalling into a Schwarzchild black hole. We show that the late-time waveform of massive scalar perturbations is dominated by a universal oscillatory decaying tail, which appears due to curvature effects. We also show that the energy spectrum is in perfect agreement with a ZFL calculation once no-hair properties of black holes are taken into account. In the second part, …
Superradiance is known as a wave amplification process caused by rotating or charged black holes. We argue that the superradiance of stationary black holes in asymptotically AdS spacetimes can be characterized by the ability of energy extraction. Specifically, we demonstrate that energy can be extracted from Reissner-Nordström-AdS$_4$ and Kerr-AdS$_4$ under appropriate time-dependent boundary conditions at conformal boundaries. This indicates that energy can be extracted from thermal states dual to these black holes by applying appropriate time-dependent sources. We also show that the energy e…
Under some conditions, light boson fields grow exponentially around a rotating black hole, called the superradiance instability. We discuss effects of nonlinear interactions of the boson on the instability. In particular, we focus on the effect of the particle production and show that the growth of the boson cloud may be saturated much before the black hole spin is extracted by the boson cloud, while the nonlinear interactions also induce the boson emission. For application, we revisit the superradiant instability of the standard model photon, axion and hidden photon.
Rotating axisymmetric objects amplify incoming waves by superradiant scattering. When enclosed in a cavity, the repeated interaction of a confined field with the object may trigger superradiant instabilities. Rotating binaries are ubiquitous in physics, and play a fundamental role in astrophysics and in everyday life instruments. Such binaries may be prone to superradiant phenomena as well, but their inherent complexity makes it challenging to study how exactly such instabilities can be triggered. Here, we study a binary of two absorbing objects (mimicking black hole binaries, blades of an hel…
We present an exact expression for the quasinormal modes of acoustic disturbances in a rotating 2+1 dimensional sonic black hole (draining bathtub fluid flow) in the low frequency limit and evaluate the adiabatic invariant proposed by Kunstatter. We also compute, via Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule the equivalent area spectrum for this acoustic black hole, and we compute the superradiance phenomena for pure spinning 2+1 black holes.
We show the existence of superradiant modes of massive scalar fields propagating in BTZ black holes when certain Robin boundary conditions, which never include the commonly considered Dirichlet boundary conditions, are imposed at spatial infinity. These superradiant modes are defined as those solutions whose energy flux across the horizon is towards the exterior region. Differently from rotating, asymptotically flat black holes, we obtain that not all modes which grow up exponentially in time are superradiant; for some of these, the growth is sourced by a bulk instability of AdS3, triggered by…
The absorption cross section of rotating black holes in the Randall-Sundrum brane-world scenario for massless scalar waves is obtained via the partial-wave method. A variety of incidence directions with respect to the black hole rotation axis is considered. Special attention is given to near-extreme black holes, in which cases the absorption cross section increases as the tidal charge becomes more negative. It is shown that black holes with different configurations can present capture cross sections/shadows of same size. However, in such cases, the absorption spectra are different mainly for s…
The superradiant amplification in the scattering from a rotating medium was first elucidated by Sir Roger Penrose over 50 years ago as a means by which particles could gain energy from rotating black holes. Despite this fundamental process being ubiquitous also in wave physics, it has only been observed once experimentally, in a water tank, and never in an astrophysical setting. Here, we measure this amplification for a nonlinear optics experiment in the superfluid regime. In particular, by focusing a weak optical beam carrying orbital angular momentum onto the core of a strong pump vortex bea…
We discuss the conditions under which plane electromagnetic and gravitational waves can be amplified by a rotating black hole due to superradiant scattering. We show, in particular, that amplification can occur for low-frequency waves with an incidence angle parametrically close to 0 (or $π$) with respect to the black hole spin axis and with a parametrically small left (or right) polarization. This is the case of the radiation emitted by a spinning electric/magnetic dipole or gravitational quadrupole orbiting a black hole companion at large radius and co-rotating with the latter. This can yiel…
We investigate the possibility of the acoustic superresonance phenomenon (analog to the superradiance in black hole physics), i.e., the amplification of a sound wave by reflection from the ergoregion of a rotating acoustic black hole with Lorentz symmetry breaking. For rotating black holes the effect of superradiance corresponds to the situation where the incident waves has reflection coefficient greater than one, and energy is extracted from them. For an acoustic Kerr-like black hole its rate of loss of mass is affected by the Lorentz symmetry breaking. We also have shown that for suitable va…
It was recently revealed that a rotating compact body responds dynamically when it is subjected to a gravitomagnetic tidal field, even when this field is idealized as time-independent. The dynamical response is characterized by time-changing internal currents, and it was suspected to originate from zero-frequency g-modes and r-modes driven by the tidal forces. In this paper we provide additional insights into the phenomenon by examining the tidal response of a rotating body within the framework of post-Newtonian gravity. This approach allows us to develop an intuitive picture for the phenomeno…
We extend the recent microscopic analysis of extremal dyonic Kaluza-Klein (D0-D6) black holes to cover the regime of fast rotation in addition to slow rotation. Fastly rotating black holes, in contrast to slow ones, have non-zero angular velocity and possess ergospheres, so they are more similar to the Kerr black hole. The D-brane model reproduces their entropy exactly, but the mass gets renormalized from weak to strong coupling, in agreement with recent macroscopic analyses of rotating attractors. We discuss how the existence of the ergosphere and superradiance manifest themselves within the …
Tidal indicators are commonly associated with the electric and magnetic parts of the Riemann tensor (and its covariant derivatives) with respect to a given family of observers in a given spacetime. Recently, observer-dependent tidal effects have been extensively investigated with respect to a variety of special observers in the equatorial plane of the Kerr spacetime. This analysis is extended here by considering a more general background solution to include the case of matter which is also endowed with an arbitrary mass quadrupole moment. Relation with curvature invariants and Bel-Robinson ten…
Focusing on the rotating black hole (BH) surrounded by the anisotropic fluid matters; radiation, dust, and dark matter, we study the massive scalar superradiant scattering and the stability in the Kiselev spacetime. Superradiance behavior is dependent on the intensity parameter of the anisotropic matter $K$ in the Kiselev spacetime. By adopting the manifest of low-frequency and low-mass for the scalar perturbation, we find $K<0$ enhances the superradiance scattering within the broader frequency range, compared to $K=0$ while $K>0$ suppresses within the narrower frequency range. As a result, th…
