We show the existence of superradiant modes of massive scalar fields propagating in BTZ black holes when certain Robin boundary conditions, which never include the commonly considered Dirichlet boundary conditions, are imposed at spatial infinity. These superradiant modes are defined as those solutions whose energy flux across the horizon is towards the exterior region. Differently from rotating, asymptotically flat black holes, we obtain that not all modes which grow up exponentially in time are superradiant; for some of these, the growth is sourced by a bulk instability of AdS3, triggered by the scalar field with Robin boundary conditions, rather than by energy extraction from the BTZ black hole. Thus, this setup provides an example wherein Bosonic modes with low frequency are pumping energy into, rather than extracting energy from, a rotating black hole.
We have considered the divergence structure in the brick-wall model for the statistical mechanical entropy of a quantum field in thermal equilibrium with a black hole which {\it rotates}. Especially, the contribution to entropy from superradiant modes is carefully incorporated, leading to a result for this contribution which corrects some previous errors in the literature. It turns out that the previous errors were due to an incorrect quantization of the superradiant modes. Some of main results for the case of rotating BTZ black holes are that the entropy contribution from superradiant modes i…
It has been claimed that in a test of an asymptotically AdS version of weak cosmic censorship conjecture by attempting to overspin a BTZ black hole with test particles, one finds that it is not possible to spin-up the black hole past its extremal limit. The result of this analysis is restricted to the case where the initial black hole is extremal. We extend this analysis to find that massive test particles can overspin the black hole, if we start with a nearly extremal black hole, instead. We also consider the interaction of the BTZ black hole with test fields. We show that overspinning of nea…
We consider a real, massive scalar field in BTZ spacetime, a 2+1-dimensional black hole solution of the Einstein's field equations with a negative cosmological constant. First, we analyze the space of classical solutions in a mode decomposition and we characterize the collection of all admissible boundary conditions of Robin type which can be imposed at infinity. Secondly, we investigate whether, for a given boundary condition, there exists a ground state by constructing explicitly its two-point function. We demonstrate that for a subclass of the boundary conditions it is possible to construct…
We introduce an analog model for the conformally coupled scalar field on the BTZ black hole. The model is based on the propagation of acoustic waves in a Laval nozzle. Since the BTZ black hole is not a globally hyperbolic spacetime, the dynamics of the scalar field is not well defined until extra boundary conditions are prescribed at its spatial infinity. We show that quasinormal modes (QNMs) satisfying Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin boundary conditions in the BTZ black hole can be interpreted in terms of ordinary QNMs defined with respect to an appropriately extended nozzle. We also discuss th…
We show that there is no superradiance for the Dirac field in the rotating BTZ black hole if the field vanishes at infinity. Then we outline the calculation of the expression for the renormalized energy-momentum tensor, the effective action as well as the heat kernel for the Dirac field for the BTZ black hole. Finally we point out how to construct the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state for the real scalar field in the non-rotating BTZ black hole in two and three dimensions.
We compute the transition rate of an Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled both to a ground state and to a KMS state of a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on a static BTZ black hole with Robin boundary conditions. We observe that, although the anti-Hawking effect is manifest for the ground state, this is not the case for the KMS state. In addition, we show that our analysis applies with minor modifications also to the anti-Unruh effect on Rindler-AdS$_3$ spacetime.
It has been recently observed that a scalar field with Robin boundary conditions (RBCs) can trigger both a superradiant and a bulk instability for a BTZ black hole (BH). To understand the generality and scrutinize the origin of this behavior, we consider here the superradiant instability of a Kerr BH confined either in a mirror-like cavity or in AdS space, triggered also by a scalar field with RBCs. These boundary conditions are the most general ones that ensure the cavity/AdS space is an isolated system, and include, as a particular case, the commonly considered Dirichlet boundary conditions …
We study quasinormal modes (QNMs) of massive Klein-Gordon fields in static Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black holes in terms of ladder operators constructed from spacetime conformal symmetries. Because the BTZ spacetime is locally isometric to the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, ladder operators, which map a solution of the massive Klein-Gordon equation into that with different mass squared, can be constructed from spacetime conformal symmetries. In this paper, we apply the ladder operators to the QNMs of the Klein-Gordon equations in the BTZ spacetime. We demonstrate that the …
We establish the existence of stationary clouds of massive test scalar fields around BTZ black holes. These clouds are zero-modes of the superradiant instability and are possible when Robin boundary conditions (RBCs) are considered at the AdS boundary. These boundary conditions are the most general ones that ensure the AdS space is an isolated system, and include, as a particular case, the commonly considered Dirichlet or Neumann-type boundary conditions (DBCs or NBCs). We obtain an explicit, closed form, resonance condition, relating the RBCs that allow the existence of normalizable (and regu…

We analyse the local behaviour of the two-point correlation function of a quantum state for a scalar field in a neighbourhood of a Killing horizon in a $2+1$-dimensional spacetime, extending the work of Moretti and Pinamonti in a $3+1$-dimensional scenario. In particular we show that, if the state is of Hadamard form in such neighbourhood, similarly to the $3+1$-dimensional case, under a suitable scaling limit towards the horizon, the two-point correlation function exhibits a thermal behaviour at the Hawking temperature. Since the whole analysis rests on the assumption that a Hadamard state ex…
We analytically and numerically study quasinormal frequencies (QNFs) of neutral and charged scalar fields in the charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes and discuss the stability of the black holes in terms of the QNFs. We focus on the range of the mass squared $μ^2$ of the scalar fields for which the Robin boundary condition parametrised by $ζ$ applies at the conformal infinity. We find that if the black hole of radius $r_{+}$ and charge $Q$ is much smaller than the AdS length $\ell$, the instability of the charged scalar field can be understood in terms of superradiance in the reflective bo…
We study the thermodynamics of an uncharged, non-rotating BTZ black hole. In addition to the thermal properties, we are interested in the phase transition between two locally thermodynamic stable phases which may arise from different areas of validity for the ads/CFT correspondence. We report on the calculation of entanglement entropies for quantum field theory defined on two dimensional Minkowski space by using its geometric realization as the hyperbolic plane. For free quantum fields in one or more spatial dimensions, we show that a geometric approach reproduces some of the recent results fo…
We consider Maxwell and Yang-Mills (YM) fields together, interacting through gravity both in Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theories. For this purpose we choose two different sets of Maxwell and metric ansaetze. In our first ansatz, asymptotically for $r\to 0$ (and $N>4$) the Maxwell field dominants over the YM field. In the other asymptotic region, $r\to \infty $, however, the YM field becomes dominant. For N=3 and N=4, where the GB term is absent, we recover the well-known Ba\U{f1}ados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) and Reissner-Nordstr\U{f6}m (RN) metrics, respectively. The second ansatz correspo…
In the lack of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity, I consider free, scalar, quantum fields on curved spacetimes to gain insight into the interaction between quantum and gravitational phenomena. I employ the Unruh-DeWitt detector approach to probe thermal, quantum effects on static, non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this context, all physical observables depend on the choice of a boundary condition that cannot be singled-out, in general, without resorting to an experiment. Notwithstanding, the framework applied admits a large family of (Robin) boundary conditions and grants us physic…
