We compute the transition rate of an Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled both to a ground state and to a KMS state of a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on a static BTZ black hole with Robin boundary conditions. We observe that, although the anti-Hawking effect is manifest for the ground state, this is not the case for the KMS state. In addition, we show that our analysis applies with minor modifications also to the anti-Unruh effect on Rindler-AdS$_3$ spacetime.
In this paper, we study the Hawking temperature of the BTZ black hole based on the purely topological method proposed by Robson, Villari, and Biancalana (RVB) [Phys. Rev. D 99, 044042 (2019)]. The Hawking temperature of the charged rotating BTZ black hole can be accurately derived by this topological method. We also calculate the Hawking temperature of the BTZ black hole in massive gravity. Because the metric function of the BTZ black hole in massive gravity has a mass term, the corresponding Hawking temperature cannot be derived unless an integral constant is added.
Hawking radiation is viewed as a tunnelling process. In this way the effect of self-gravitation gives rise to semiclassical corrections to the entropy of the (2+1) BTZ black hole. The modified entropy, due to specific modelling of the self-gravitation effect, of the (2+1) BTZ black hole is evaluated. To first order in $ω$ which is a shell of energy radiated outwards the event horizon of the BTZ black hole, modified entropy is proportional to the horizon. In this semiclassical analysis, corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula $S_{BH}=\mathcal{A}_{H} / 4l_{P}^{2}$ are found to be negative …
Hawking radiation viewed as a semiclassical tunneling process from the event horizon of the (2 + 1)-dimensional rotating BTZ black hole is carefully reexamined by taking into account not only the energy conservation but also the conservation of angular momentum when the effect of the emitted particle's self-gravitation is incorporated. In contrast to previous analysis of this issue in the literature, our result obtained here fits well to the Kraus-Parikh-Wilczek's universal conclusion without any modification to the Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy formulae of the BTZ black hole.
We derive an exact expression for the partition function of the Euclidean BTZ black hole. Using this, we show that for a black hole with large horizon area, the correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is $-3/2 log(Area)$, in agreement with that for the Schwarzschild black hole obtained in the canonical gravity formalism and also in a Lorentzian computation of BTZ black hole entropy. We find that the right expression for the logarithmic correction in the context of the BTZ black hole comes from the modular invariance associated with the toral boundary of the black hole.
In this paper we consider a BTZ black hole with minimum length which has been introduced through the probability density of the ground state of the hydrogen atom. We analyzed the effect of the minimum length by calculating the thermodynamic quantities such as temperature and entropy and verified the stability of the black hole by computing the specific heat capacity.
We review the relation between AdS spacetime in 1+2 dimensions and the BTZ black hole. Later we show that a ground state in AdS spacetime becomes a thermal state in the BTZ black hole. We show that this is true in the bulk and in the boundary of AdS spacetime. The existence of this thermal state is tantamount to say that the Unruh effect exists in AdS spacetime and becomes the Hawking effect for an eternal BTZ black hole. In order to make this we use the correspondence introduced in Algebraic Holography between algebras of quasi-local observables associated to wedges and doble cones regions in…
We consider the Hawking-Page phase transition between the BTZ black hole of $M \ge 0$ and the thermal soliton of $M=-1$. In this system, there exists a mass gap so that there does not seem to exist a continuous thermodynamic phase transition. We consistently construct the off-shell free energies of the black hole and the soliton by properly taking into account the conical space. And then, the continuous off-shell free energy to describe tunneling effect can be realized through non-equilibrium solitons.
In this paper we obtain the flux of Hawking radiation from Rotating BTZ black holes from gauge and gravitational anomalies point of view. Then we show that the gauge and gravitational anomaly in the BTZ spacetime is cancelled by the total flux of a 2-dimensional blackbody at the Hawking temperature of the spacetime.
We re-examine Hawking radiation for a nonrotating (2+1)-dimensional BTZ black hole and evaluate the transmission probability of tunneling through the barrier of the event horizon employing the standard method of WKB approximation. Our results are presented for both uncharged and charged cases. We also explore the associated thermodynamics in terms of Hawking temperature and provide estimates of black hole parameters like the surface gravity and entropy.
The Unruh effect is a surprising prediction of quantum field theory that asserts accelerating observers perceive a thermal spectrum of particles with a temperature proportional to their acceleration. However, it has recently been shown that particle detectors can click less often or even cool down as their acceleration increases, in contrast to the heating one would expect. This leads to the so called anti-Unruh phenomena. Here we consider detectors outside a BTZ black hole and demonstrate the existence of black hole analogues of these effects, which we dub anti-Hawking phenomena.
We investigate thermodynamics of the BTZ black hole in new massive gravity explicitly. For $m^2\ell^2>1/2$ with $m^2$ the mass parameter of fourth-order terms and $\ell^2$ AdS$_3$ curvature radius, the Hawking-Page phase transition occurs between the BTZ black hole and AdS (thermal) soliton. For $m^2\ell^2<1/2$, however, this transition unlikely occurs but a phase transition between the BTZ black hole and the massless BTZ black hole is possible to occur. We may call the latter as the inverse Hawking-Page phase transition and this transition is favored in the new massive gravity.
Motivated by the Robinson-Wilczek's recent viewpoint that Hawking radiation can be treated as a compensating energy momentum tensor flux required to cancel gravitational anomaly at the horizon of a Schwarzschild-type black hole, we investigate Hawking radiation from the rotating $(2+1)$-dimensional BTZ black hole and the charged $(2+1)$-dimensional BTZ black hole, via cancellation of gauge and gravitational anomalies at the horizon. To restore gauge invariance and general coordinate covariance at the quantum level, one must introduce the corresponding gauge current and energy momentum tensor f…
Hawking radiation as a quantum tunneling phenomena from accelerating BTZ black holes is presented in this work. We have calculated the Dirac particle's Hawking radiation from the horizon of the accelerating BTZ black hole. WKB approximation is applied to Dirac equation in the background of three dimensional black holes. This procedure gives us the tunneling probability, which we have used to calculate the Hawking temperature of the background three-dimensional black hole. Our study is consistent with the previous studies in the absence of the acceleration parameter. We have also studied the qu…
During the last few years, exact solutions that describe black holes that are bound to a two-brane in a four dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk have been constructed. In situations wherein there is a negative cosmological constant on the brane, for large masses, these solutions are exactly the rotating BTZ black holes on the brane and, in fact, describe rotating BTZ black strings in the bulk. We evaluate the canonical entropy of a free and massless scalar field (at the Hawking temperature) around the rotating BTZ black string using the brick wall model. We explicitly show that the Bekenstein-Hawk…
In this paper we investigate an exact spectrum of quasi normal modes (QNMs) for perturbations of a scalar field coupled non-minimally with the Einstein tensor of an uncharged, non-rotating Banados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in three-dimensional spacetime. Due to the geometry around the black hole, the scalar field encounters an effective potential barrier. We study this potential numerically and derive exact numerical results for the greybody factors (GFs) and discuss their profiles in terms of the coupling constant and black hole parameters. We then proceed to derive the Hawkin…
Thermodynamics of the BTZ black hole in noncommutative geometry is studied. We work out the Hawking temperature and entropy which reduce to their commutative limits when the noncommutativity parameter tends to zero. We also discuss the range of validity of the Hawking area law in the noncommutative case and provide graphical analysis. We see that the law is not valid unless the outer horizon is very large.
Recent work has shown that the entropy of the non-rotating BTZ black hole can be derived from a dual conformal description at any spatial location. In this followup it is shown that a dual conformal description exists at any spatial location for the rotating BTZ black hole as well. As in the non-rotating case, two copies of the central charge $c^{\pm} = 3\ell/2G$ are recovered and the microcanonical Cardy formula yields the correct Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We show the explicit agreement between the derivation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a Euclidean BTZ black hole from the point of view of spin foam models and canonical quantization. This is done by considering a graph observable (corresponding to the black hole horizon) in the Turaev-Viro state sum model, and then analytically continuing the resulting partition function to negative values of the cosmological constant.
By globally embedding curved spaces into higher dimensional flat ones, we show that Hawking thermal properties map into their Unruh equivalents: The relevant curved space detectors become Rindler ones, whose temperature and entropy reproduce the originals. Specific illustrations include Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-(anti)deSitter, Reissner-Nordstrom and BTZ spaces.
We investigate whether or not the Hawking-Page phase transition is possible to occur in three dimensions. Starting with the simplest class of Lanczos-Lovelock action, thermodynamic behavior of all AdS-type black holes without charge falls into two classes: Schwarzschild-AdS black holes in even dimensions and Chern-Simons black holes in odd dimensions. The former class can provide the Hawking-Page transition between Schwarzschild-AdS black holes and thermal AdS space. On the other hand, the latter class is exceptional and thus the Hawking-Page transition is hard to occur. In three dimensions, a…
We examine an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector coupled to a scalar field in three-dimensional curved spacetime, within first-order perturbation theory. We first obtain a causal and manifestly regular expression for the instantaneous transition rate in an arbitrary Hadamard state. We then specialise to the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole and to a massless conformally coupled field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. A co-rotating detector responds thermally in the expected local Hawking temperature, while a freely-falling detector shows no evidence of thermality in regimes that we are able to pro…
We investigate the correlation harvesting protocol for mutual information between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors in a static BTZ black hole spacetime. Here, the effects coming from communication and change in proper separation of the detectors are set to be negligible so that only a black hole affects the extracted mutual information. We find that, unlike the entanglement harvesting scenario, harvested mutual information is zero only when a detector reaches an event horizon, and that although the Hawking effect and gravitational redshift both affect the extraction of mutual information, it is extr…
We present the thermodynamics of a charged and rotating BTZ black holes here. In particular, we derive expressions for various macroscopic thermal quantities such as entropy, Hawking temperature, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, and specific heat. To study the effects of small statistical thermal fluctuations around the equilibrium on thermodynamics, we calculated the leading-order corrections to the various thermodynamical potentials of charged and rotating BTZ black hole and do comparative analysis for the fixed values of charge and angular momentum.
In this paper we consider the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) in the tunneling formalism via Hamilton-Jacobi method to determine the quantum-corrected Hawking temperature and entropy for noncommutative BTZ black hole. In our results we obtain several types of corrections including the expected logarithmic correction to the area entropy associated with the noncommutative BTZ black holes. We also show that the area entropy product of the noncommutative BTZ black holes is dependent on mass and by analyzing the nature of the specific heat capacity we have observed that the noncommutative B…
Previous derivations of the BTZ black hole entropy from a dual conformal description place the degrees of freedom at spatial infinity. Here it is shown for the non-rotating case that a dual conformal description exists at any location around the black hole, a result that has a strong physical appeal considering that in 2+1 dimensions there are no propagating degrees of freedom in the classical theory. Two copies of the central charge of $3\ell/2G$ are recovered, and the microcanonical Cardy formula yields the correct Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
In this manuscript, we investigate the thermal properties of the rotating charged BTZ black hole under the gravity's rainbow (GR) and generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) formalism. At first, we study the GR-corrected thermal quantities according to the usual Heisenberg algebra. Then, we consider a deformed algebra that leads to a change in the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and compare the Hawking temperature, entropy, thermodynamical volume, pressure, and heat capacity functions with the previous results. Thus, we understand and interpret the quantum effects on the BTZ black hole.
In this paper, the tunneling of scalar particles near the event horizons of Riemann space time, BTZ black hole and Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole are investigated by applying Hamilton-Jacobi equation with Lorentz violation theory in curved space time. The modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation is derived from Klein-Gordon equation of scalar particles induced by Lorentz violation theory in curved space time. The Hawking temperatures of Riemann space time and the BTZ black hole are modified due to the effect of Lorentz violation theory. Moreover, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy near the event hori…
In the framework of thermal quantization of radial geodesics completely confined behind the horizons we calculate the entropy of BTZ black hole in agreement with the Bekenstein--Hawking relation. Particles in the BTZ black hole occupy the only quantum ground level. The quantization allow us to find a linear dependence of black hole mass versus its orbital momentum.
For the BTZ black hole in the Einstein gravity, a statistical entropy has been calculated to be equal to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. In this paper, the statistical entropy of the BTZ black hole in the higher curvature gravity is calculated and shown to be equal to the one derived by using the Noether charge method. This suggests that the equivalence of the geometrical and statistical entropies of the black hole is retained in the general diffeomorphism invariant theories of gravity. A relation between the cosmic censorship conjecture and the unitarity of the conformal field theory on the b…
We investigate the effect of noncommutativity and quantum corrections to the temperature and entropy of a BTZ black hole based on a Lorentzian distribution with the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). To determine the Hawking radiation in the tunneling formalism we apply the Hamilton-Jacobi method by using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approach. In the present study we have obtained logarithmic corrections to entropy due to the effect of noncommutativity and GUP. We also address the issue concerning stability of the non-commutative BTZ black hole by investigating its modified specif…
It is often convenient to view Hawking (black hole) radiation as a process of quantum tunneling. Within this framework, Kraus and Wilczek (KW) have initiated an analytical treatment of black hole emission. Notably, their methodology incorporates the effects of a dynamical black hole geometry. In the current paper, the KW formalism is applied to the case of a charged BTZ black hole. In the context of this interesting model, we are able to demonstrate a non-thermal spectrum, with the usual Hawking result being reproduced at zeroth order in frequency. Considerable attention is then given to the e…
We investigate the thermodynamic equilibrium states of a rotating thin shell, i.e., a ring, in a (2+1)-dimensional spacetime with a negative cosmological constant. The inner and outer regions with respect to the shell are given by the vacuum anti-de Sitter and the rotating Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanelli spacetimes, respectively. The first law of thermodynamics on the thin shell, together with three equations of state for the pressure, the local inverse temperature and the thermodynamic angular velocity of the shell, yields the entropy of the shell, which is shown to depend only on its gravitational…
The one-loop quantum corrections for BTZ black hole are considered using the dimensionally reduced 2D model. Cases of 3D minimal and conformal coupling are analyzed. Two cases are considered: minimally coupled and conformally coupled 3D scalar matter. In the minimal case, the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh vacuum states are defined and the corresponding semiclassical corrections of the geometry are found. The calculations are done for the conformal case too, in order to make the comparison with the exact results obtained previously in the special case of spinless black hole. Beside that we find exac…
We study the Lamb shift of a two-level atom arising from its coupling to the conformal massless scalar field, which satisfies the Dirichlet boundary conditions, in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum in the BTZ spacetime, and find that the Lamb shift in the BTZ spacetime is structurally similar to that of a uniformly accelerated atom near a perfectly reflecting boundary in (2+1)-dimensional flat spacetime. Our results show that the Lamb shift is suppressed in the BTZ spacetime as compared to that in the flat spacetime as long as the transition wavelength of the atom is much larger than $AdS$ radius of t…
It has been suggested in the literature that, given a black hole spacetime, a relativistic membrane can provide an effective description of the horizon dynamics. In this paper, we explore such a framework in the context of a 2+1-dimensional BTZ black hole. Following this membrane prescription, we are able to translate the horizon dynamics (now described by a string) into the convenient form of a 1+1-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation. We proceed to quantize the solutions and construct a thermodynamic partition function. Ultimately, we are able to extract the quantum-corrected entropy, which is …
We analyze certain aspects of BTZ black holes in massive theory of gravity. The black hole solution is obtained by using the Vainshtein and dRGT mechanism, which is asymptotically AdS with an electric charge. We study the Hawking radiation using the tunneling formalism as well as analyze the black hole chemistry for such system. Subsequently, we use the thermodynamic pressure-volume diagram to explore the efficiency of the Carnot heat engine for this system. Some of the important features arising from our solution include the non-existence of quantum effects, critical Van der Walls behaviour, …
The charged BTZ black hole is characterized by a power-law curvature singularity generated by the electric charge of the hole. The curvature singularity produces ln r terms in the asymptotic expansion of the gravitational field and divergent contributions to the boundary terms. We show that these boundary deformations can be generated by the action of the conformal group in two dimensions and that an appropriate renormalization procedure allows for the definition of finite boundary charges. In the semiclassical regime the central charge of the dual CFT turns out to be that calculated by Brown …
In this review, we summarize exact results for the three-dimensional BTZ black hole. We use rigorous mathematical results to clarify the general structure and properties of this black hole spacetime and its microscopic description. In particular, we study the formation of the black hole by point particle collisions, leading to an exact analytic determination of the Choptuik scaling parameter. We also show that a `No Hair Theorem' follows immediately from a mathematical theorem of hyperbolic geometry, due to Sullivan. A microscopic understanding of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, and decay rate…
Takahashi & Soda (2010 Class. Quantum Grav. v27 p175008, arXiv:1005.0286) have recently considered the effect (at lowest non-trivial order) of dynamical, quantized gravitational fluctuations on the spectrum of scalar Hawking radiation from a collapsing Schwarzschild black hole. However, due to an unfortunate choice of gauge, the dominant (even divergent) contribution to the coefficient of the spectrum correction that they identify is a pure gauge artifact. I summarize the logic of their calculation, comment on the divergences encountered in its course and comment on how they could be eliminate…
We solve semiclassical Einstein equations in two dimensions with a massive source and we find a static, thermodynamically stable, quantum black hole solution in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state. We then study the black hole geometry generated by a boundary mass sitting on a non-zero tension 1-brane embedded in a three-dimensional BTZ black hole. We show that the two geometries coincide and we extract, using holographic relations, information about the CFT living on the 1-brane. Finally, we show that the quantum black hole has the same temperature of the bulk BTZ, as expected from the holographi…
In this paper we obtain the entropy formula of black hole solutions of Minimal Massive Gravity (MMG) by Tachikawa method \cite{a}. Then we apply this formula for BTZ black hole solution. We find that the usual Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is modified. The modification come from Chern-Simons (CS) term and new term in MMG. The contribution of CS term, which is proportional with inner radius of horizon is not new, but last term which is due to the new term of MMG, as usual is proportional to the outer radius of horizon and is new result. Then we show that the total entropy exactly can be reproduced…
I point out that the cutoff introduced by Agullo et al. [Phys.Rev.D80:047503,2009 arXiv:0906.5315] has little impact on the trans-Planckian problem as it is usually understood; it excludes only a small fraction of the problematic modes.
BTZ black holes are excellent laboratories for studying black hole thermodynamics which is a bridge between classical general relativity and quantum nature of gravitation. In addition, three-dimensional gravity could have equipped us for exploring some of the ideas behind the two dimensional conformal field theory based on the $AdS_{3}/CFT_{2}$. Considering the significant interests in these regards, we examine charged BTZ black holes. We consider the system contains massive gravity with energy dependent spacetime to enrich the results. In order to make high curvature (energy) BTZ black holes …
In this work, we study gravity duals of conformal field theories with boundaries known as AdS/BCFT correspondence, put forward by Takayanagi [1], within a scalar-tensor theory, as proposed by Horndeski in 4D [2]. We consider the case of 3D gravity dual to 2D BCFT, take a Gibbons-Hawking surface term modified by Horndeski's theory and find the corresponding 3D (BTZ) black hole solutions. We analyze the effects of Horndeski's gravity on the profile of the extra boundary for the black hole by using an approximate analytic solution. Performing a holographic renormalization, we have calculated the …
We comment on the consistence of the epsilon anti-symmetric tensor adopted in [R. Banerjee and S. Kulkarni, arXiv:0707.2449] when it is generalized in the general case where $\sqrt{-g} \neq 1$. It is pointed out that the correct non-minimal consistent gauge and gravitational anomalies should by multiplied a factor $\sqrt{-g} \neq 1$. We also sketch the generalization of their work to the $\sqrt{-g} \neq 1$ case.
Hawking radiation emanating from two-dimensional charged and uncharged dilatonic black holes - dimensionally reduced from (2+1) spinning and spinless, respectively, BTZ black holes - is viewed as a tunnelling process. Two dimensional dilatonic black holes (AdS(2) included) are treated as dynamical backgrounds in contrast to the standard methodology where the background geometry is fixed when evaluating Hawking radiation. This modification to the geometry gives rise to a nonthermal part in the radiation spectrum. Nonzero temperature of the extremal two-dimensional charged black hole is found. T…
In this paper I give an explicit conformal field theory description of (2+1)-dimensional BTZ black hole entropy. In the boundary Liouville field theory I investigate the reducible Verma modules in the elliptic sector, which correspond to certain irreducible representations of the quantum algebra U_q(sl_2) \odot U_{\hat{q}}(sl_2). I show that there are states that decouple from these reducible Verma modules in a similar fashion to the decoupling of null states in minimal models. Because ofthe nonstandard form of the Ward identity for the two-point correlation functions in quantum Liouville fiel…
We investigate the stability of the inner horizon of a rotating BTZ black hole. We show that linear perturbations arising from smooth initial data are arbitrarily differentiable at the inner horizon if the black hole is sufficiently close to extremality. This is demonstrated for scalar fields, for massive Chern-Simons fields, for Proca fields, and for massive spin-2 fields. Thus the strong cosmic censorship conjecture is violated by a near-extremal BTZ black hole in a large class of theories. However, we show that a weaker "rough" version of the conjecture is respected. We calculate the renorm…
We study the quantum scalar fields in background of BTZ black hole spacetime. We calculate the entanglement entropy using the discretized model, which resembles a system of coupled harmonic oscillators. The leading term of the entropy formula is standard Bakenstein-Hawking entropy and sub-leading corresponds to quantum corrections to black hole entropy. We calculate the co-efficent of sub-leading logarithmic corrections numerically.
We show that BTZ black hole solution of Cosmological Topological Massive Gravity (CTMG) have a hidden conformal symmetry. In this regard, we consider the wave equation of a massless scalar field propagating in BTZ spacetime and find the wave equation could be written in terms of the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir. From the conformal coordinates, the temperatures of the dual CFTs could be read directly. Moreover, we compute the microscopic entropy of the dual CFT by Cardy formula and find a perfect match to Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of BTZ black hole. Then we consider Glilean conformal algebras (…
We investigate the limitations on the thermal description of three dimensional BTZ black holes. We derive on physical grounds three basic mass scales that are relevant to characterize these limitations. The Planck mass in 2+1 dimensions indicate the limits where the black hole can emit Hawking's radiation. We show that the back reaction is meaningless for spinless BTZ black hole. For stationary BTZ black holes the nearly extreme case is analyzed showing that may occur a break down of its description as a thermal object.
Saravani, Afshordi and Mann \cite{SAM} considered a surface fluid with vanishing energy density on the stretched horizon of a black hole, taken as the new boundary of spacetime. We show that their entropy per unit area of the fluid does not correspond to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, both for a Schwarzschild black hole and for a Kerr-Newman black hole. Due to the lack of a horizon, we argue that the Unruh effect could not be taken into account and the concept of local thermodynamic equilibrium is not sustained because of the $θ$-dependence of the temperature.
