In 2011 Lutwak, Yang and Zhang extended the definition of the $L_p$-Minkowski convex combination ($p \geq 1$) introduced by Firey in the 1960s from convex bodies containing the origin in their interiors to all measurable subsets in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and as a consequence, extended the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality ($L_p$-BMI) to the setting of all measurable sets. In this paper, we present a functional extension of their $L_p$-Minkowski convex combination---the $L_{p,s}$--supremal convolution and prove the $L_p$-Borell-Brascamp-Lieb type ($L_p$-BBL) inequalities. Based on the $L_p$-BBL type inequalities for functions, we extend the $L_p$-BMI for measurable sets to the class of Borel measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ having $\left(\frac{1}{s}\right)$-concave densities, with $s \geq 0$; that is, we show that, for any pair of Borel sets $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, any $t \in [0,1]$ and $p\geq 1$, one has \[ μ((1-t) \cdot_p A +_p t \cdot_p B)^{\frac{p}{n+s}} \geq (1-t) μ(A)^{\frac{p}{n+s}} + t μ(B)^{\frac{p}{n+s}}, \] where $μ$ is a measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ having a $\left(\frac{1}{s}\right)$-concave density for $0 \leq s < \infty$.
Additionally, with the new defined $L_{p,s}$--supremal convolution for functions, we prove $L_p$-BMI for product measures with quasi-concave densities and for log-concave densities, $L_p$-Prékopa-Leindler type inequality ($L_p$-PLI) for product measures with quasi-concave densities, $L_p$-Minkowski's first inequality ($L_p$-MFI) and $L_p$ isoperimetric inequalities ($L_p$-ISMI) for general measures, etc. Finally a functional counterpart of the Gardner-Zvavitch conjecture is presented for the $p$-generalization.
We prove the log-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture for convex bodies with symmetries to $n$ independent hyperplanes, and discuss the equality case and the uniqueness of the solution of the related case of the logarithmic Minkowski problem. We also clarify a small gap in the known argument classifying the equality case of the log-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture for unconditional convex bodies.
In this paper, we develop a basic theory of Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas for convex and $s$-concave functions. We prove some basic properties for these newly introduced functional affine invariants and establish related functional affine isoperimetric inequalities as well as functional Santaló type inequalities.
\footnotesize Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang recently conjectured a certain strengthening of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality for symmetric convex bodies, the so-called log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality. We establish this inequality together with its equality cases for pairs of unconditional convex bodies with respect to some orthonormal basis. Applications of this fact are discussed. Moreover, we prove that the log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality is equivalent to the (B)-Theorem for the uniform measure of the cube (this has been proven by Cordero-Erasquin, Fradelizi and Maurey for the gaussian measur…
A quantitative version of Minkowski sum, extending the definition of $θ$-convolution of convex bodies, is studied to obtain extensions of the Brunn-Minkowski and Zhang inequalities, as well as, other interesting properties on Convex Geometry involving convolution bodies or polar projection bodies. The extension of this new version to more than two sets is also given.
We construct the extension of the curvilinear summation for bounded Borel measurable sets to the $L_p$ space for multiple power parameter $\barα=(α_1, \cdots, α_{n+1})$ when $p>0$. Based on this $L_{p,\barα}$-curvilinear summation for sets and concept of {\it compression} of sets, the $L_{p,\barα}$-curvilinear-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for bounded Borel measurable sets and its normalized version are established. Furthermore, by utilizing the hypo-graphs for functions, we enact a brand new proof of $L_{p,\barα}$ Borell-Brascamp-Lieb inequality, as well as its normalized version, for functions …
Log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality was conjectured by Boröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang \cite{BLYZ}, and it states that a certain strengthening of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality is admissible in the case of symmetric convex sets. It was recently shown by Nayar, Zvavitch, the second and the third authors \cite{LMNZ}, that Log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality implies a certain dimensional Brunn-Minkowski inequality for log-concave measures, which in the case of Gaussian measure was conjectured by Gardner and Zvavitch \cite{GZ}. In this note, we obtain stability results for both Log-Brunn-Minkowsk…
We present an argument which leads from the Brunn-Minkowski inequality to a Poincare' type inequality on the boundary of convex bodies with smooth boundary and positive Gauss curvature
We use Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for quermassintegrals to deduce a family of inequalities of Poincaré type on the unit sphere and on the boundary of smooth convex bodies in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space.
In this paper, we prove a Prékopa-Leindler type inequality of the $L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski inequality. It extends an inequality proved by Das Gupta [8] and Klartag [16], and thus recovers the Prékopa-Leindler inequality. In addition, we prove a functional $L_p$ Minkowski inequality.
In this short note we explain why the log-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture is correct for complex convex bodies. We do this by relating the conjecture to the notion of complex interpolation, and appealing to a general theorem by Cordero-Erausquin.
Given one metric measure space $X$ satisfying a linear Brunn-Minkowski inequality, and a second one $Y$ satisfying a Brunn-Minkowski inequality with exponent $p\ge -1$, we prove that the product $X\times Y$ with the standard product distance and measure satisfies a Brunn-Minkowski inequality of order $1/(1+p^{-1})$ under mild conditions on the measures and the assumption that the distances are strictly intrinsic. The same result holds when we consider restricted classes of sets. We also prove that a linear Brunn-Minkowski inequality is obtained in $X\times Y$ when $Y$ satisfies a Prékopa-Leind…
The classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality states that for $A_1,A_2\subset\R^n$ compact, $$ |A_1+A_2|^{1/n}\ge |A_1|^{1/n}+|A_2|^{1/n}\eqno(1) $$ where $|\cdot|$ denotes the Lebesgue measure on $\R^n$. In 1986 V. Milman {\bf [Mil 1]} discovered that if $B_1$ and $B_2$ are balls there is always a relative position of $B_1$ and $B_2$ for which a perturbed inverse of $(1)$ holds. More precisely:\lq\lq{\sl There exists a constant $C>0$ such that for all $n\in\N$ and any balls $B_1,B_2\subset\R^n$ we can find a linear transformation $u\colon\R^n\to\R^n$ with $|{\rm det}(u)|=1$ and $$|u(B_1)+B_2|^{1/n…
We prove a quantitative stability result for the Brunn-Minkowski inequality: if $|A|=|B|=1$, $t \in [τ,1-τ]$ with $τ>0$, and $|tA+(1-t)B|^{1/n}\leq 1+δ$ for some small $δ$, then, up to a translation, both $A$ and $B$ are quantitatively close (in terms of $δ$) to a convex set $K$.
Elementary proofs of sharp isoperimetric inequalities on a normed space $(\mathbb{R}^n,||\cdot||)$ equipped with a measure $μ= w(x) dx$ so that $w^p$ is homogeneous are provided, along with a characterization of the corresponding equality cases. When $p \in (0,\infty]$ and in addition $w^p$ is assumed concave, the result is an immediate corollary of the Borell-Brascamp-Lieb extension of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality, providing an elementary proof of a recent result of Cabré-Ros Oton-Serra. When $p \in (-1/n,0)$, the relevant property turns out to be a novel "complemented Brunn-Minko…
The aim of this note is to show that the local form of the logarithmic Brunn-Minkowski conjecture holds for zonoids. The proof uses a variant of the Bochner method due to Shenfeld and the author.
We extend Prekopa's Theorem and the Brunn-Minkowski Theorem from convexity to $F$-subharmonicity. We apply this to the interpolation problem of convex functions and convex sets introducing a new notion of "harmonic interpolation" that we view as a generalization of Minkowski-addition.
By studying $L^p$-combinations of strongly isomorphic polytopes, we prove the equivalence of the $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality conjectured by Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang to the local version of the inequality studied by Colesanti, Livshyts, and Marsiglietti and by Kolesnikov and Milman, settling a conjecture of the latter authors. In addition, we prove the local inequality in dimension $2$, yielding a new proof of the $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality in the plane.
The $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory for $p\geq 1$, proposed by Firey and developed by Lutwak in the 90's, replaces the Minkowski addition of convex sets by its $L^p$ counterpart, in which the support functions are added in $L^p$-norm. Recently, Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang have proposed to extend this theory further to encompass the range $p \in [0,1)$. In particular, they conjectured an $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for origin-symmetric convex bodies in that range, which constitutes a strengthening of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality. Our main result confirms this conjecture local…
Geometric and functional Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities for the lattice point enumerator $\mathrm{G}_n(\cdot)$ are provided. In particular, we show that $$\mathrm{G}_n((1-λ)K + λL + (-1,1)^n)^{1/n}\geq (1-λ)\mathrm{G}_n(K)^{1/n}+λ\mathrm{G}_n(L)^{1/n}$$ for any non-empty bounded sets $K, L\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ and all $λ\in(0,1)$. We also show that these new discrete versions imply the classical results, and discuss some links with other related inequalities.
We prove a sharp stability result for the Brunn-Minkowski inequality for $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. Assuming that the Brunn-Minkowski deficit $δ=|A+B|^{\frac{1}{2}}/(|A|^\frac12+|B|^\frac12)-1$ is sufficiently small in terms of $t=|A|^{\frac{1}{2}}/(|A|^{\frac{1}{2}}+|B|^{\frac{1}{2}})$, there exist homothetic convex sets $K_A \supset A$ and $K_B\supset B$ such that $\frac{|K_A\setminus A|}{|A|}+\frac{|K_B\setminus B|}{|B|} \le C t^{-\frac{1}{2}}δ^{\frac{1}{2}}$. The key ingredient is to show for every $ε>0$, if $δ$ is sufficiently small then $|co(A+B)\setminus (A+B)|\le (1+ε)(|co(A)\setminus A…
We present a simple proof of Christer Borell's general inequality in the Brunn-Minkowski theory. We then discuss applications of Borell's inequality to the log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality of Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang.
Let $γ_n$ be the standard Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that for every symmetric convex sets $K,L$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and every $λ\in(0,1)$, $$γ_n(λK+(1-λ)L)^{\frac{1}{n}} \geq λγ_n(K)^{\frac{1}{n}}+(1-λ)γ_n(L)^{\frac{1}{n}},$$ thus settling a problem raised by Gardner and Zvavitch (2010). This is the Gaussian analogue of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the Lebesgue measure. We also show that, for a fixed $λ\in(0,1)$, equality is attained if and only if $K=L$.
This paper develops basic setting for the dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star bodies. An Orlicz $φ$-radial addition of two or more star bodies is proposed and related dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality is established. Based on a linear Orlicz $φ$-radial addition of two star bodies, we derive a formula for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume. Moreover, a dual Orlicz-Minkowski inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume, a dual Orlicz isoperimetric inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual surface area and a dual Orlicz-Urysohn inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-harmonic mean radius are…
Elaborating on the similarity between the entropy power inequality and the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, Costa and Cover conjectured in {\it On the similarity of the entropy power inequality and the Brunn-Minkowski inequality} (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 30 (1984), no. 6, 837-839) the $\frac{1}{n}$-concavity of the outer parallel volume of measurable sets as an analogue of the concavity of entropy power. We investigate this conjecture and study its relationship with geometric inequalities.
We consider a different $L^p$-Minkowski combination of compact sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ than the one introduced by Firey and we prove an $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality, $p \in [0,1]$, for a general class of measures called convex measures that includes log-concave measures, under unconditional assumptions. As a consequence, we derive concavity properties of the function $t \mapsto μ(t^{\frac{1}{p}} A)$, $p \in (0,1]$, for unconditional convex measures $μ$ and unconditional convex body $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also prove that the (B)-conjecture for all uniform measures is equivalent to the (B)…
A generalization of Young's inequality for convolution with sharp constant is conjectured for scenarios where more than two functions are being convolved, and it is proven for certain parameter ranges. The conjecture would provide a unified proof of recent entropy power inequalities of Barron and Madiman, as well as of a (conjectured) generalization of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality. It is shown that the generalized Brunn-Minkowski conjecture is true for convex sets; an application of this to the law of large numbers for random sets is described.
We prove a sharp stability result concerning how close homothetic sets attaining near-equality in the Brunn-Minkowski inequality are to being convex. In particular, resolving a conjecture of Figalli and Jerison, we show there are universal constants $C_n,d_n>0$ such that for $A \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ of positive measure, if $|\frac{A+A}{2}\setminus A| \le d_n |A|$, then $|\operatorname{co}(A)\setminus A| \le C_n |\frac{A+A}{2}\setminus A|$ for $\operatorname{co}(A)$ the convex hull of $A$.
We develop a reverse entropy power inequality for convex measures, which may be seen as an affine-geometric inverse of the entropy power inequality of Shannon and Stam. The specialization of this inequality to log-concave measures may be seen as a version of Milman's reverse Brunn-Minkowski inequality. The proof relies on a demonstration of new relationships between the entropy of high dimensional random vectors and the volume of convex bodies, and on a study of effective supports of convex measures, both of which are of independent interest, as well as on Milman's deep technology of $M$-ellip…
This paper aims to develop basic theory for the dual Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas for star bodies, which belong to the recent dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star bodies. Basic properties for these new affine invariants will be provided. Moreover, related Orlicz affine isoperimetric inequality, cyclic inequality, Santaló style inequality and Alexander-Fenchel type inequality are established.
We prove a new family of inequalities, which compare the integral of a geometric convolution of non-negative functions with the integrals of the original functions. For classical inf-convolution, this type of inequality is called the Prékopa-Leindler inequality, which, restricted to indicators of convex bodies, gives the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality. The convolution we consider is a different one, which arises from the study of the polarity transform for functions. While inf-convolution arises as the pull back of usual addition of convex functions under the Legendre transform, our geom…
The Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory receives considerable attention recently, and many results in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory have been extended to their Orlicz counterparts. The aim of this paper is to develop Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas for single convex body as well as for multiple convex bodies, which generalize the $L_p$ (mixed) affine and geominimal surface areas -- fundamental concepts in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory. Our extensions are different from the general affine surface areas by Ludwig (in Adv. Math. 224 (2010)). Moreover, our definitions for Orlicz $…
We study a Riemannian manifold equipped with a density which satisfies the Bakry--Émery Curvature-Dimension condition (combining a lower bound on its generalized Ricci curvature and an upper bound on its generalized dimension). We first obtain a Poincaré-type inequality on its boundary assuming that the latter is locally-convex; this generalizes a purely Euclidean inequality of Colesanti, originally derived as an infinitesimal form of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, thereby precluding any extensions beyond the Euclidean setting. A dual version for generalized mean-convex boundaries is also obt…
Let $C$ be a pointed closed convex cone in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with vertex at the origin $o$ and having nonempty interior. The set $A\subset C$ is $C$-coconvex if the volume of $A$ is finite and $A^{\bullet}=C\setminus A$ is a closed convex set. For $0<p<1$, the $p$-co-sum of $C$-coconvex sets is introduced, and the corresponding $L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski inequality for $C$-coconvex sets is established. We also define the $L_p$ surface area measures, for $0\neq p\in \mathbb{R}$, of certain $C$-coconvex sets, which are critical in deriving a variational formula of the volume of the Wulff shape associate…
The general volume of a star body, a notion that includes the usual volume, the $q$th dual volumes, and many previous types of dual mixed volumes, is introduced. A corresponding new general dual Orlicz curvature measure is defined that specializes to the $(p,q)$-dual curvature measures introduced recently by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang. General variational formulas are established for the general volume of two types of Orlicz linear combinations. One of these is applied to the Minkowski problem for the new general dual Orlicz curvature measure, giving in particular a solution to the Minkowski prob…
Analogues of the classical inequalities from the Brunn-Minkowski theory for rotation intertwining additive maps of convex bodies are developed. Analogues are also proved of inequalities from the dual Brunn-Minkowski theory for intertwining additive maps of star bodies. These inequalities provide generalizations of results for projection and intersection bodies. As a corollary, a new Brunn-Minkowski inequality is obtained for the volume of polar projection bodies.
In his Annals of Mathematics paper (2009), Berndtsson proves an important result on the Nakano positivity of holomorphic infinite-rank vector bundles whose fibers are Hilbert spaces consisting of holomorphic $L^2$-functions with respect to a family of weight functions $\left\{e^{-φ(\cdot,t)}\right\}_{t \in U}$, varying in $t \in U \in \mathbb{C}^m$, over a pseudoconvex domain. Using a variant of Hörmander's theorem due to Donnelly and Fefferman, we show that Berndtsson's Nakano positivity result holds under different (in fact, more general) curvature assumptions. This is of particular interest…
We prove that a plane domain which is almost isoperimetric (with respect to the $L^1$ metric) is close to a square whose sides are parallel to the coordinates axis. Closeness is measured either by $L^\infty$ Haussdorf distance or Fraenkel asymmetry. In the first case, we determine the extremal domains.
In this paper, we study the conjecture of Gardner and Zvavitch from \cite{GZ}, which suggests that the standard Gaussian measure $γ$ enjoys $\frac{1}{n}$-concavity with respect to the Minkowski addition of \textbf{symmetric} convex sets. We prove this fact up to a factor of 2: that is, we show that for symmetric convex $K$ and $L,$ $$ γ(λK+(1-λ)L)^{\frac{1}{2n}}\geq λγ(K)^{\frac{1}{2n}}+(1-λ)γ(L)^{\frac{1}{2n}}. $$ Further, we show that under suitable dimension-free uniform bounds on the Hessian of the potential, the log-concavity of even measures can be strengthened to $p$-concavity, with $p>…
In contemporary convex geometry, the rapidly developing L_p-Brunn Minkowski theory is a modern analogue of the classical Brunn Minkowski theory. A cornerstone of this theory is the L_p-affine surface area for convex bodies. Here, we introduce a functional form of this concept, for log concave and s-concave functions. We show that the new functional form is a generalization of the original L_p-affine surface area. We prove duality relations and affine isoperimetric inequalities for log concave and s-concave functions. This leads to a new inverse log-Sobolev inequality for s-concave densities.
Let $m(G)$ be the infimum of the volumes of all open subgroups of a unimodular locally compact group $G$. Suppose integrable functions $ϕ_1 , ϕ_2 \colon G \to [0,1]$ satisfy $\| ϕ_1 \| \leq \| ϕ_2 \|$ and $\| ϕ_1 \| + \| ϕ_2 \| \leq m (G)$, where $\| \cdot \|$ denotes the $L^1$-norm with respect to a Haar measure $dg$ on $G$. We have the following inequality for any convex function $f \colon [0, \| ϕ_1 \| ] \to \mathbb{R}$ with $f(0) = 0$: \begin{align*} \int_{G}^{} f \circ ( ϕ_1 * ϕ_2 ) (g) dg \leq 2 \int_{0}^{\| ϕ_1 \|} f(y) dy + ( \| ϕ_2 \| - \| ϕ_1 \| ) f( \| ϕ_1 \| ). \end{align*} As a co…
A description of continuous rigid motion compatible Minkowski valuations is established. As an application, we present a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality for intrinsic volumes of these valuations.
In this paper, combining the $p$-capacity for $p\in (1, n)$ with the Orlicz addition of convex domains, we develop the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory. In particular, the Orlicz $L_ϕ$ mixed $p$-capacity of two convex domains is introduced and its geometric interpretation is obtained by the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Hadamard variational formula. The $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski and Orlicz-Minkowski inequalities are established, and the equivalence of these two inequalities are discussed as well. The $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Minkowski problem is proposed and solved under some mild…
The general dual volume $\dveV(K)$ and the general dual Orlicz curvature measure $\deV(K, \cdot)$ were recently introduced for functions $G: (0, \infty)\times \sphere\rightarrow (0, \infty)$ and convex bodies $K$ in $\R^n$ containing the origin in their interiors. We extend $\dveV(K)$ and $\deV(K, \cdot)$ to more general functions $G: [0, \infty)\times \sphere\rightarrow [0, \infty)$ and to compact convex sets $K$ containing the origin (but not necessarily in their interiors). Some basic properties of the general dual volume and of the dual Orlicz curvature measure, such as the continuous depe…
In the paper, our main aim is to generalize the width integrals to the Orlicz space. Under the framework of Orlicz Brunn-Minkowski theory, we introduce a new affine geometric quantity by calculating Orlicz first order variation of the width integrals, and call as Orlicz mixed width integrals. The fundamental notions and conclusions of the width integrals and Minkoswki and Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for the width integrals are extended to an Orlicz setting and the related concepts and inequalities of Lp mixed width integrals of convex body are also derived.
