Quantum batteries are energy storage or extract devices in a quantum system. Here, we present a closed-loop quantum battery by utilizing a closed-loop three-state quantum system in which the population dynamics depends on the three control fields and associated phases. We investigate the charging process of the closed-loop three-level quantum battery. The charging performance is greatly improved due to existence of the third field in the system to form a closed-contour interaction. Through selecting an appropriate the third control field, the maximum average power can be increased, even far beyond the most ideal maximum power value of non-closed-loop three-level quantum battery (corresponding to the most powerful charging obtainable with minimum quantum speed limit time and the maximum charging energy). We study the effect of global driving-field phase on the charging process and find the maximum extractable work (`ergotropy') and charging power vary periodically under different control field, with a period of $2π$. Possible experimental implementation in nitrogen-vacancy spin is discussed.
A repeated interaction process assisted by auxiliary thermal systems charges a quantum battery. The charging energy is supplied by switching on and off the interaction between the battery and the thermal systems. The charged state is an equilibrium state for the repeated interaction process, and the ergotropy characterizes its charge. The working cycle consists in extracting the ergotropy and charging the battery again. We discuss the fluctuating efficiency of the process, among other fluctuating properties. These fluctuations are dominated by the equilibrium distribution and depend weakly on …
The analytically tractable model employing Quantum Markovian Master Equations, derived by weak coupling procedure and satisfying complete positivity, is proposed to describe a model of molecular battery charged by a non-equilibrium excitonic reservoir. The excitons are produced by non-equilibrium processes involving, e.g. light absorption and chemical reactions. Various relations concerning the efficiency of the involved processes of energy transfer and the stability of battery are discussed. The model can be treated as an initial step in applications of mathematically sound version of Quantum…
A quantum battery is a device where an energy is charged by using a quantum effect. Here, we propose a quantum battery with a charger system composed of $N$ qubits by utilizing a collective effect called a superabsorption. Importantly, the coupling strength between the quantum battery and charger system can be enhanced due to an entanglement. While the charger time scales as $Θ\left(N^{-1/2}\right)$ by applying a conventional scheme, we can achieve a charging time $Θ\left(N^{-1}\right)$ in our scheme. Our results open the path to ultra-fast charging of a quantum battery.

We show that a cyclic unitary process can extract work from the thermodynamic equilibrium state of an engineered quantum dissipative process. Systems in the equilibrium states of these processes serve as batteries, storing energy. The dissipative process that brings the battery to the active equilibrium state is driven by an agent that couples the battery to thermal systems. The second law of thermodynamics imposes a work cost for the process; however, no work is needed to keep the battery in that charged state. We consider simple examples of these batteries and discuss particular cases in whi…
Quantum battery works as a micro- or nano-device to store and redistribute energy at the quantum level. Here we propose a spin-charger protocol, in which the battery cells are charged by a finite number of spins through a general Heisenberg XY interaction. Under the isotropic interaction, the spin-charger protocol is endowed with a higher capacity in terms of the maximum stored energy than the conventional protocols, where the battery is charged by a continuous-variable system, e.g., a cavity mode. By tuning the charger size, a trade-off between the maximum stored energy and the average chargi…
In this work, we study the efficiency of charging a quantum battery through optical pumping. The battery consists of a qutrit and it is connected to a natural thermal reservoir and an external coherent drive in the limit where its upper energy level can be adiabatically eliminated from the dynamics. In this scenario, the drive plus spontaneous emission optically pumps the intermediate energy level of the qutrit and the battery can be understood as being charged by an effective higher temperature reservoir that takes it out of equilibrium with the natural reservoir and stores useful energy in i…
We study the charging process of open quantum batteries mediated by a common dissipative environment in two different scenarios. In the first case, we consider a quantum charger-battery model in the presence of a non-Markovian environment. Where the battery can be properly charged in a strong coupling regime, without any external power and any direct interaction with the charger, i.e., a wireless-like charging happens. The environment plays a major role in the charging of the battery, while this does not happen in a weak coupling regime. In the second scenario, we show the effect of individual…
In an article by García-Pintos et al. [Rev. Lett. 125, 040601 (2020)] the connection between the charging power of a quantum battery and the fluctuations of a "free energy operator" whose expectation value characterizes the maximum extractable work of the battery is studied. The result of the closed-system analysis shows that for a general charging process the battery will have a nonzero charging power if and only if the state of the battery is not an eigenstate of the free energy operator. In this Comment, we point out a few mistakes in the analysis and obtain the correct bound on the chargin…
We introduce an open quantum battery protocol using dark states to achieve both superextensive capacity and power density, with non-interacting spins coupled to a reservoir. Further, our power density actually scales with the of number of spins $N$ in the battery. We show that the enhanced capacity and power is correlated with entanglement. Whilst connected to the charger, the charged state of the battery is a steady state, stabilized through quantum interference in the open system.
We study the problem of charging a dissipative one-dimensional $XXX$ spin-chain quantum battery using local magnetic fields in the presence of spin decay. The introduction of quantum feedback control based on homodyne measurement contributes to improve various performance of the quantum battery, such as energy storage, ergotropy, and effective space utilization rate. For the zero temperature environment, there is a set of optimal parameters to ensure that the spin-chain quantum battery can be fully charged and the energy stored in the battery can be fully extracted under the perfect measuremen…
One of the most fundamental tasks in quantum thermodynamics is extracting energy from one system and subsequently storing this energy in an appropriate battery. Both of these steps, work extraction and charging, can be viewed as cyclic Hamiltonian processes acting on individual quantum systems. Interestingly, so-called passive states exist, whose energy cannot be lowered by unitary operations, but it is safe to assume that the energy of any not fully charged battery may be increased unitarily. However, unitaries raising the average energy by the same amount may differ in qualities such as thei…
When a quantum system is subject to a thermal gradient it may sustain a steady non-equilibrium heat current, by entering into a so-called non equilibrium steady state (NESS). Here we show that NESS constitute a thermodynamic resource that can be exploited to fuel a quantum heat engine. This adds to the list of recently reported sources available at the nano-scale, such as coherence, entanglement and quantum measurements. We elucidate this concept by showing analytic and numerical studies of a two-qubits quantum battery that is alternatively charged by a thermal gradient and discharged by appli…
A quantum battery is a temporary energy-storage system. We constructed the quantum battery model of an N-spin chain with nearest-neighbor hopping interaction and investigated the charging process of the quantum battery. We obtained the maximum energy in the quantum battery charged by a coherent cavity driving field or a thermal heat bath. We confirmed that for a finite-length spin chain, thermal charging results in a nonzero ergotropy, contradicting a previous result: that an incoherent heat source cannot charge a single-spin quantum battery. The nearest-neighbor hopping interaction induces en…
In this paper, we investigate the effect of different optical field initial states on the performance of the Tavis-Cummings (T-C) quantum battery. In solving the dynamical evolution of the system, we found a fast way to solve the Bethe ansatz equation. We find that the stored energy and the average charging power of the T-C quantum battery are closely related to the probability distribution of the optical field initial state in the number states. We define a quantity called the number-state stored energy. With this prescribed quantity, we only need to know the probability distribution of the o…
We investigate the performance of a quantum battery exposed to local Markovian and non-Markovian dephasing noises. The battery is initially prepared as the ground state of a one-dimensional transverse $XY$ model with open boundary condition and is charged (discharged) via interactions with local bosonic reservoirs. We show that in the transient regime, quantum battery (QB) can store energy faster and has a higher maximum extractable work, quantified via ergotropy, when it is affected by local phase-flip or bit-flip Markovian noise compared to the case when there is no noise in the system. In b…
The charging of a quantum battery by a four-stroke quantum machine that works either as an engine or a refrigerator is investigated. The presented analysis provides the energetic behavior of the combined system in terms of the heat and workflows of the machine, the average, and variance of the battery's energy as well as the coherent and incoherent parts of its ergotropy. To monitor the battery state its energy is measured either after the completion of any cycle or after a prescribed number of cycles is carried out. The resulting battery performances greatly differ for those two cases. During…
Operations performing on quantum batteries are extended to scenarios where we no longer force the existence of definite causal order of occurrence between distinct processes. In contrast to standard theories, the so called indefinite causal order is found to have the capability of accomplishing tasks that are not possible without it. Specifically, we show how this novel class of resource comes into play in quantum batteries by first, combining two static unitary chargers into a coherently superposed one to fully charge an empty battery even if in the presence of battery's local Hamiltonian. Th…

We investigate a quantum battery made of N two-level systems, which is charged by an optical mode via an energy-conserving interaction. We quantify the fraction E(N) of energy stored in the B battery that can be extracted in order to perform thermodynamic work. We first demonstrate that E(N) is highly reduced by the presence of correlations between the charger and the battery or B between the two-level systems composing the battery. We then show that the correlation-induced suppression of extractable energy, however, can be mitigated by preparing the charger in a coherent optical state. We con…
Power storage devices are shown to increase their efficiency if they are designed by using quantum systems. We show that the average power output of a quantum battery based on a quantum interacting spin model, charged via a local magnetic field, can be enhanced with the increase of spin quantum number. In particular, we demonstrate such increment in the power output when the initial state of the battery is prepared as the ground or canonical equilibrium state of the spin-j XY model and the bilinear-biquadratic spin-j Heisenberg chain (BBH) in presence of the transverse magnetic field. We study the role of coherence in closed and open quantum batteries. We obtain upper bounds to the work performed or energy exchanged by both closed and open quantum batteries in terms of coherence. Specifically, we show that the energy storage can be bounded by the Hilbert-Schmidt coherence of the density matrix in the spectral basis of the unitary operator that encodes the evolution of the battery. We also show that an analogous bound can be obtained in terms of the battery's Hamiltonian coherence in the basis of the unitary operator by evaluating their commutator. We apply these bounds to a…

Motivated by a recent disagreement about the claim that fluctuations in the free energy operator bound the charging power of a quantum battery, we present a critical analysis of the original derivation. The analysis shows that the above claim does not hold for both closed- and open-system dynamics. Our results indicate that the free energy operator is not a consistent quantifying operator for the work content of a charging quantum battery.
