When a quantum system is subject to a thermal gradient it may sustain a steady non-equilibrium heat current, by entering into a so-called non equilibrium steady state (NESS). Here we show that NESS constitute a thermodynamic resource that can be exploited to fuel a quantum heat engine. This adds to the list of recently reported sources available at the nano-scale, such as coherence, entanglement and quantum measurements. We elucidate this concept by showing analytic and numerical studies of a two-qubits quantum battery that is alternatively charged by a thermal gradient and discharged by application of a properly chosen unitary gate. The presence of a NESS for the charging step guarantees steady operation with positive power output. Decreasing the duration of the charging step results in a time periodic steady state accompanied by increased efficiency and output power. The device is amenable to implementation with different nanotechnology platforms.
We present a collision model for the charging of a quantum battery by identical nonequilibrium qubit units. When the units are prepared in a mixture of energy eigenstates, the energy gain in the battery can be described by a classical random walk, where both average energy and variance grow linearly with time. Conversely, when the qubits contain quantum coherence, interference effects buildup in the battery and lead to a faster spreading of the energy distribution, reminiscent of a quantum random walk. This can be exploited for faster and more efficient charging of a battery initialized in the…
Theoretical explorations have revealed that quantum batteries can exploit quantum correlation to achieve faster charging, thus promising exciting applications in future technologies. Using NMR architecture, here we experimentally investigate various aspects of quantum battery with the help of nuclear spin systems in star-topology configuration. We first carry out numerical analysis to study how charging a quantum battery depends on the relative purity factors of charger and battery spins. By experimentally measuring the polarization of the battery spin undergoing charging, we estimate the batt…
Quantum batteries are quantum systems that store energy which can then be used for quantum tasks. One relevant question about such systems concerns the differences and eventual advantages over their classical counterparts, whether in the efficiency of the energy transference, input power, total stored energy or other relevant physical quantities. Here, we show how a purely quantum effect related to the vacuum of the electromagnetic field can enhance the charging of a quantum battery. In particular, we demonstrate how an anti-Jaynes Cummings interaction derived from an off-resonant Raman config…
Quantum battery is one of the most prominent micro-devices in the rapid-developing quantum thermodynamics. We propose a quantum charging protocol in which both battery and charger are consisted of a many-spin system. The battery and charger are connected via the Kittle mode of the magnon system, that serves as a charging wire and then enables a long-range charging protocol. Counter-intuitively, we find that the spin-spin couplings insider both battery and charger can be used to promote the charging performance in comparison to the noninteracting condition. And a remarkable promotion is realize…

One of the most fundamental tasks in quantum thermodynamics is extracting energy from one system and subsequently storing this energy in an appropriate battery. Both of these steps, work extraction and charging, can be viewed as cyclic Hamiltonian processes acting on individual quantum systems. Interestingly, so-called passive states exist, whose energy cannot be lowered by unitary operations, but it is safe to assume that the energy of any not fully charged battery may be increased unitarily. However, unitaries raising the average energy by the same amount may differ in qualities such as thei…
We show that a cyclic unitary process can extract work from the thermodynamic equilibrium state of an engineered quantum dissipative process. Systems in the equilibrium states of these processes serve as batteries, storing energy. The dissipative process that brings the battery to the active equilibrium state is driven by an agent that couples the battery to thermal systems. The second law of thermodynamics imposes a work cost for the process; however, no work is needed to keep the battery in that charged state. We consider simple examples of these batteries and discuss particular cases in whi…
In an article by García-Pintos et al. [Rev. Lett. 125, 040601 (2020)] the connection between the charging power of a quantum battery and the fluctuations of a "free energy operator" whose expectation value characterizes the maximum extractable work of the battery is studied. The result of the closed-system analysis shows that for a general charging process the battery will have a nonzero charging power if and only if the state of the battery is not an eigenstate of the free energy operator. In this Comment, we point out a few mistakes in the analysis and obtain the correct bound on the chargin…
We study the problem of charging a dissipative one-dimensional $XXX$ spin-chain quantum battery using local magnetic fields in the presence of spin decay. The introduction of quantum feedback control based on homodyne measurement contributes to improve various performance of the quantum battery, such as energy storage, ergotropy, and effective space utilization rate. For the zero temperature environment, there is a set of optimal parameters to ensure that the spin-chain quantum battery can be fully charged and the energy stored in the battery can be fully extracted under the perfect measuremen…
Quantum batteries are energy storage or extract devices in a quantum system. Here, we present a closed-loop quantum battery by utilizing a closed-loop three-state quantum system in which the population dynamics depends on the three control fields and associated phases. We investigate the charging process of the closed-loop three-level quantum battery. The charging performance is greatly improved due to existence of the third field in the system to form a closed-contour interaction. Through selecting an appropriate the third control field, the maximum average power can be increased, even far be…

We consider a central-spin battery where $N_b$ central spins serve as battery cells and $N_c$ bath spins serve as charging units. It is shown that the energy stored in the battery that can be extractable is quantified by the ergotropy, and that battery-charger entanglement is quantified via the Von Neumann entropy. By using an exact approach to a one-cell and two-cell battery, our analytical results suggest that, during the charging process, the extractable work slowly increases before the battery-charger entanglement reaches its maximum and then it will rapidly increase when the entanglement …
Quantum batteries are energy storage devices that satisfy quantum mechanical principles. How to improve the battery's performance such as stored energy and power is a crucial element in the quantum battery. Here, we investigate the charging and discharging dynamics of a three-level counterdiabatic stimulated Raman adiabatic passage quantum battery via shortcuts to adiabaticity, which can compensate for undesired transitions to realize a fast adiabatic evolution through the application of an additional control field to an initial Hamiltonian. The scheme can significantly speed up the charging a…
Quantum batteries are miniature energy storage devices and play a very important role in quantum thermodynamics. In recent years, quantum batteries have been extensively studied, but limited in theoretical level. Here we report the experimental realization of a quantum battery based on superconducting qubits. Our model explores dark and bright states to achieve stable and powerful charging processes, respectively. Our scheme makes use of the quantum adiabatic brachistochrone, which allows us to speed up the {battery ergotropy injection. Due to the inherent interaction of the system with its su…
Quantum battery works as a micro- or nano-device to store and redistribute energy at the quantum level. Here we propose a spin-charger protocol, in which the battery cells are charged by a finite number of spins through a general Heisenberg XY interaction. Under the isotropic interaction, the spin-charger protocol is endowed with a higher capacity in terms of the maximum stored energy than the conventional protocols, where the battery is charged by a continuous-variable system, e.g., a cavity mode. By tuning the charger size, a trade-off between the maximum stored energy and the average chargi…

We investigate the charging process of quantum battery (QB) systems in an extended Dicke model with both atomic interactions and an external driving field. We focus on the effects of the atomic interaction and the external driving field on the charging performance of QB and find that the maximum stored energy of QB has a critical phenomenon. We analyze the critical behavior and obtain the analytical expression of the critical atomic interaction. The dependence of the maximum stored energy, the energy quantum fluctuations and the maximum charging power on the number $N$ of the two-level systems…
We study the charging process of open quantum batteries mediated by a common dissipative environment in two different scenarios. In the first case, we consider a quantum charger-battery model in the presence of a non-Markovian environment. Where the battery can be properly charged in a strong coupling regime, without any external power and any direct interaction with the charger, i.e., a wireless-like charging happens. The environment plays a major role in the charging of the battery, while this does not happen in a weak coupling regime. In the second scenario, we show the effect of individual…
To take quantum advantage of collective effects in many-body system, we design an elementary block for building multipartite quantum battery, which enables charging an atomic ensemble with optimal numbers in a common thermal bath. One achieves maximum free energy as the stored energy in the steady state, which is prior to each atom parallel charging independently. It ascribes to quantum collective effects in the ensemble of atoms induced by the competition between the coherent driving and decoherent dissipation. The corresponding thermodynamic efficiency of the energy storage is analyzed. The …

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model has recently received considerable attention in condensed matter because it describes a typical one-dimensional system with topological edge states. Here, we investigate SSH-based charging protocols of quantum batteries (QB) with N quantum cells. This SSH QB hopping interaction induced ground state splitting makes the different effects of the dimerize parameter to the QB in the different quantum phase region. In the non-splitting region, the dimerize parameter has little influence on the QB. Whereas the fully-splitting region, the dimerize parameter has a s…
We investigate the performance of a quantum battery exposed to local Markovian and non-Markovian dephasing noises. The battery is initially prepared as the ground state of a one-dimensional transverse $XY$ model with open boundary condition and is charged (discharged) via interactions with local bosonic reservoirs. We show that in the transient regime, quantum battery (QB) can store energy faster and has a higher maximum extractable work, quantified via ergotropy, when it is affected by local phase-flip or bit-flip Markovian noise compared to the case when there is no noise in the system. In b…
