A quantum battery is a temporary energy-storage system. We constructed the quantum battery model of an N-spin chain with nearest-neighbor hopping interaction and investigated the charging process of the quantum battery. We obtained the maximum energy in the quantum battery charged by a coherent cavity driving field or a thermal heat bath. We confirmed that for a finite-length spin chain, thermal charging results in a nonzero ergotropy, contradicting a previous result: that an incoherent heat source cannot charge a single-spin quantum battery. The nearest-neighbor hopping interaction induces energy band splitting, which enhances the energy storage and the ergotropy of the quantum battery. We found a critical point in the energy and ergotropy resulting from the ground-state quantum phase transition, after which the energy significantly enhance. Finally, we also found that disorder increased the energy of the quantum battery.

Recently, it has been shown that energy can be deposited on a collection of quantum systems at a rate that scales super-extensively. Some of these schemes for `quantum batteries' rely on the use of global many-body interactions that take the batteries through a correlated short cut in state space. Here, we extend the notion of a quantum battery from a collection of a priori isolated systems to a many-body quantum system with intrinsic interactions. Specifically, we consider a one-dimensional spin chain with physically realistic two-body interactions. We find that the spin-spin interactions can…

We study the evolution of qubit-environment entanglement, quantified using Negativity, for NV-center spin qubits interacting with an environment of $^{13}$C isotope partially polarized nuclear spins in the diamond lattice. We compare it with the evolution of the Fidelity of environmental states conditional on the pointer states of the qubit, which can serve as a tool to distinguish between entangling and non-entangling decoherence in pure-dephasing scenarios. The two quantities show remarkable agreement during the evolution in a wide range of system parameters, leading to the conclusion that t…
In Ref. [J. Liu, D. Segal, and G. Hanna. J. Phys. Chem. C, 123, 18303 (2019)] there is a novel proposal of a quantum battery based on environmental interaction. The system studied is a para-Benzene ring with a symmetry that is broken in order to "redistribute the energy" creating a population imbalance between the sites. In this paper, the dynamics of the system is calculated under the single-excitation approximation and there is no discussion about its energetics. We do not discuss the authors' approach or numerical results on the single-excitation framework, but we would like to point out th…
We introduce an open quantum battery protocol using dark states to achieve both superextensive capacity and power density, with non-interacting spins coupled to a reservoir. Further, our power density actually scales with the of number of spins $N$ in the battery. We show that the enhanced capacity and power is correlated with entanglement. Whilst connected to the charger, the charged state of the battery is a steady state, stabilized through quantum interference in the open system.

Energy storage is a basic physical process with many applications. When considering this task at the quantum scale, it becomes important to optimise the non-equilibrium dynamics of energy transfer to the storage device or battery. Here, we tackle this problem using the methods of quantum feedback control. Specifically, we study the deposition of energy into a quantum battery via an auxiliary charger. The latter is a driven-dissipative two-level system subjected to a homodyne measurement whose output signal is fed back linearly into the driving field amplitude. We explore two different control …
Power storage devices are shown to increase their efficiency if they are designed by using quantum systems. We show that the average power output of a quantum battery based on a quantum interacting spin model, charged via a local magnetic field, can be enhanced with the increase of spin quantum number. In particular, we demonstrate such increment in the power output when the initial state of the battery is prepared as the ground or canonical equilibrium state of the spin-j XY model and the bilinear-biquadratic spin-j Heisenberg chain (BBH) in presence of the transverse magnetic field. With the progress of nano-technology, thermodynamics also has to be scaled down, calling for specific protocols to extract and measure work. Usually, such protocols involve the action of an external, classical field (the battery) of infinite energy, that controls the energy levels of a small quantum system (the calorific fluid). Here we suggest a realistic device to reversibly extract work in a battery of finite energy : a hybrid optomechanical system. Such devices consist in an optically active two-level quantum system interacting strongly with a nano-mechanical oscillator that provides and s…
We present a scheme for the charging of a quantum battery based on the dynamics of an open quantum system undergoing coherent quantum squeezing and affected by an incoherent squeezed thermal bath. We show that quantum coherence, as instigated by the application of coherent squeezing, are key in the determination of the performance of the charging process, which is efficiency-enhanced at low environmental temperature and under a strong squeezed driving.
Quantum battery is an emerging subject in the field of quantum thermodynamics, which is applied to charge, store and dispatch energy in quantum systems. In this work, we propose a fast and stable charging protocol based on the adiabatic evolution for the dark state of a three-level quantum battery. It combines the conventional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) and the quantum transitionless driving technique. The charging process can be accelerated up to nearly one order in magnitude even under constraint of the strength of counter-diabatic driving. To perform the charging protocol i…

A low temperature model system consisting of a central spin coupled to a spin-bath is studied to determine whether interaction among bath spins has an effect on central spin dynamics. In the absence of intra-environmental coupling, decoherence of the central spin is fast and irreversible. Strong intra-environmental interaction results in an effective decoupling of the central spin from the bath and suppression of decoherence. Weaker intra-environmental coupling reduces but does not eliminate decoherence. We believe that similar behaviour will be observed in any system with a self-interacting e…

We investigate the roles of different environmental models on quantum correlation dynamics of two-qubit composite system interacting with two independent environments. The most common environmental models (the single-Lorentzian model, the squared-Lorentzian model, the two-Lorentzian model and band-gap model) are analyzed. First, we note that for the weak coupling regime, the monotonous decay speed of the quantum correlation is mainly determined by the spectral density functions of these different environments. Then, by considering the strong coupling regime we find that, contrary to what is st…
Dynamics of quantum entanglement shared between system spins which are connected to thermal equilibrium baths is studied. Central spin system comprises of the entangled spins, and is connected to baths and one of the bath has strong intra-environmental coupling. The dynamics between the system and baths are studied and inferred that that intra-envirnomental coupling guards against the system from the effects of the spin baths.
We put forward a framework to study the dynamics of a chain of interacting quantum particles affected by individual or collective multi-mode environment, focussing on the role played by the environmental quantum correlations over the evolution of the chain. The presence of entanglement in the state of the environmental system magnifies the non-Markovian nature of the chain's dynamics, giving rise to structures in figures of merit such as entanglement and purity that are not observed under a separable multi-mode environment. Our analysis can be relevant to problems tackling the open-system dyna…
A mean field argument is used to derive a master equation for systems simultaneously interacting with external fields and coupled environmental degrees of freedom. We prove that this master equation preserves positivity of the reduced density matrix. Solutions of the master equation are compared with exact solutions for a system consisting of three spins which is manipulated with a sequence of laser pulses while interacting with a spin-bath. Exact solutions appear to converge to the master equation result as the number of bath spins increases.
In realistic situations, physical systems can not be completely isolated from its environment. Its inevitable interaction with the environment can influence the working process of the device. In this paper, we consider two-qubit quantum batteries where one qubit of the battery is successively interacting with the spins present in the surrounding environment. We examine the effect of the interaction on the maximum amount of energy that can be extracted from the battery using unitaries. In this context, we use the notion of locally passive states. In particular, we examine the behavior of the am…
