In realistic situations, physical systems can not be completely isolated from its environment. Its inevitable interaction with the environment can influence the working process of the device. In this paper, we consider two-qubit quantum batteries where one qubit of the battery is successively interacting with the spins present in the surrounding environment. We examine the effect of the interaction on the maximum amount of energy that can be extracted from the battery using unitaries. In this context, we use the notion of locally passive states. In particular, we examine the behavior of the amount of extractable work from the noisy battery, initially prepared in a locally passive or ordinary pure state, having a fixed initial entanglement, with the number of interactions the qubit has gone through. We also examine the amount of locally extractable work from the noisy battery. We realize though the amount of extractable energy, be it global or local, as a whole will decrease with the number of spins of environment it interacted with, but if we increase the time interval of the interaction with each spin, after a cut off value of the interval, the small time behavior shows a peculiarity, i.e., the extractable energy within a single interaction starts to increase with time. The cut-off time indicates the Markovian-to-non-Markovian transition of the interaction. We also observe a non-Markovian increase in extractable energy from the Markovian scenario.
Devices that use quantum advantages for storing energy in the degree of freedom of quantum systems have drawn attention due to their properties of working as quantum batteries. However, one can identify a number of problems that need to be adequately solved before a real manufacturing process of these devices. In particular, it is important paying attention to the ability of quantum batteries in storing energy when no consumption center is connected to them. In this paper, by considering quantum batteries disconnected from external charging fields and consumption center, we study the decoheren…
We consider the dissipative charging process of quantum batteries in terms of a collisional model, where the batteries are coupled to a heat bath using non-energy preserving interactions. First, we show that for low temperatures the collective process can attain a charging power that increases polynomically with the number of batteries. The scaling we find is $N^3$ that, while being grater than the bound obtained for unitary processes, it has a lower efficiency. Then, we study the dissipative charging process of single battery using a time dependent Hamiltonian that generates coherences in the…
Quantum devices are systems that can explore quantum phenomena, like entanglement or coherence, for example, to provide some enhancement performance concerning their classical counterparts. In particular, quantum batteries are devices that use entanglement as main element in its high performance in the charging powerful. In this paper, we explore the quantum battery performance and its relationship with the amount of entanglement that arises during the charging process. By using a general approach to a two and three-cell battery, our results suggest that entanglement is not the main resource t…
Book chapter in "Thermodynamics in the quantum regime - Recent Progress and Outlook" -- This chapter is a survey of the published literature on quantum batteries -- ensembles of non-degenerate quantum systems on which energy can be deposited, and from which work can be extracted. A pedagogical approach is used to familiarize the reader with the main results obtained in this field, starting from simple examples and proceeding with in-depth analysis. An outlook for the field and future developments are discussed at the end of the chapter.
One of the most important devices emerging from quantum technology are quantum batteries. However, self-discharging, the process of charge wasting of quantum batteries due to decoherence phenomenon, limits their performance, measured by the concept of ergotropy and half-life time of the quantum battery. The effects of local field fluctuation, introduced by disorder term in Hamiltonian of the system, on the performance of the quantum batteries is investigated in this paper. The results reveal that the disorder term could compensate disruptive effects of the decoherence, i.e. self-discharging, a…
We present a scheme for the charging of a quantum battery based on the dynamics of an open quantum system undergoing coherent quantum squeezing and affected by an incoherent squeezed thermal bath. We show that quantum coherence, as instigated by the application of coherent squeezing, are key in the determination of the performance of the charging process, which is efficiency-enhanced at low environmental temperature and under a strong squeezed driving.
We consider a classical harmonic driving field as the energy charger for the quantum batteries, which consist of an ensemble of two-level atoms. The maximum stored energy and the final state are derived analytically with the optimal driving frequency. At the end of charging procedure, each of atoms is in the upper state and the batteries are charging completely, which exhibits a substantial improvement over the square-wave charger. Involving the interatomic correlations, we find that the repulsive couplings show an advantage in achieving fully charging with shorter charging period. However, th…
We identify the conditions for local passivity for shared quantum batteries with local Hamiltonians. For locally passive states of two-qubit batteries, we find the relation of their entanglement content with the amount of energy that can be globally extracted from them. Moreover, we obtain that the deficit in work extraction from pure battery states due to the restriction to local unitaries is equal to the amount of optimal global work extractable from the corresponding pure locally passive battery state, for the same entanglement supply. Furthermore, the pure battery state for which globally …

In general, quantum systems most likely undergo open system dynamics due to their smallness and sensitivity. Energy storage devices, so-called quantum batteries, are not excluded from this phenomenon. Here, we study fundamental bounds on the power of open quantum batteries from the geometric point of view. By defining an \emph{activity operator}, a tight upper bound on the charging power is derived for the open quantum batteries in terms of the fluctuations of the activity operator and the quantum Fisher information. The variance of the activity operator may be interpreted as a generalized the…
We study the charging process of open quantum batteries mediated by a common dissipative environment in two different scenarios. In the first case, we consider a quantum charger-battery model in the presence of a non-Markovian environment. Where the battery can be properly charged in a strong coupling regime, without any external power and any direct interaction with the charger, i.e., a wireless-like charging happens. The environment plays a major role in the charging of the battery, while this does not happen in a weak coupling regime. In the second scenario, we show the effect of individual…
We analyse the charging process of quantum batteries with general harmonic power. To describe the charge efficiency, we introduce the charge saturation and the charging power, and divide the charging mode into the saturated charging mode and the unsaturated charging mode. The relationships between the time-dependent charge saturation and the parameters of general driving field are discussed both analytically and numerically. And according to the Floquet theorem, we give the expressions of time-dependent charge saturation with the quasiengery and the Floquet states of the system. With both the …

The performance of quantum technologies that use entanglement and coherence as resource is highly limited by decohering effects due to their interaction with some environment. Particularly, it is important to take into account situations where such devices unavoidably interact with a surrounding. Here, we study memory effects on energy and ergotropy of quantum batteries in the framework of open system dynamics, where the battery and charger are individually allowed to access a bosonic environment. Our investigation shows that the battery can be fully charged and its energy can be preserved for…
We investigate the connection between quantum resources and extractable work in quantum batteries. We demonstrate that quantum coherence in the battery or the battery-charger entanglement is a necessary resource for generating nonzero extractable work during the charging process. At the end of the charging process, we also establish a tight link of coherence and entanglement with the final extractable work: coherence naturally promotes the coherent work while coherence and entanglement inhibit the incoherent work. We also show that obtaining maximally coherent work is faster than obtaining max…
We introduce an open quantum battery protocol using dark states to achieve both superextensive capacity and power density, with non-interacting spins coupled to a reservoir. Further, our power density actually scales with the of number of spins $N$ in the battery. We show that the enhanced capacity and power is correlated with entanglement. Whilst connected to the charger, the charged state of the battery is a steady state, stabilized through quantum interference in the open system.
Motivated by a recent disagreement about the claim that fluctuations in the free energy operator bound the charging power of a quantum battery, we present a critical analysis of the original derivation. The analysis shows that the above claim does not hold for both closed- and open-system dynamics. Our results indicate that the free energy operator is not a consistent quantifying operator for the work content of a charging quantum battery.
Quantum batteries are energy storage devices that satisfy quantum mechanical principles. How to improve the battery's performance such as stored energy and power is a crucial element in the quantum battery. Here, we investigate the charging and discharging dynamics of a three-level counterdiabatic stimulated Raman adiabatic passage quantum battery via shortcuts to adiabaticity, which can compensate for undesired transitions to realize a fast adiabatic evolution through the application of an additional control field to an initial Hamiltonian. The scheme can significantly speed up the charging a…
The storage and transfer of energy through quantum batteries are key elements in quantum networks. Here, we propose a charger design based on transitionless quantum driving (TQD), which allows for inherent control over the battery charging time, with the speed of charging coming at the cost of the internal energy available to implement the dynamics. Moreover, the TQD-based charger is also shown to be locally stable, which means that the charger can be disconnected from the quantum battery (QB) at any time after the energy transfer to the QB, with no fully energy backflow to the charger. This p…
Quantum coherence represented by a superposition of energy eigenstates is, together with energy, an important resource for quantum technology and thermodynamics. Energy and quantum coherence however, can be complementary. The increase of energy can reduce quantum coherence and vice versa. Recently, it was realized that steady-state quantum coherence could be autonomously harnessed from a cold environment. We propose a conditional synthesis of $N$ independent two-level systems (TLS) with partial quantum coherence obtained from an environment to one coherent system using a measurement able to in…

Energy can be stored in quantum batteries by electromagnetic fields as chargers. In this paper, the performance of a quantum battery with single and double chargers is studied. It is shown that by using two independent charging fields, prepared in coherent states, charging power of the quantum battery can be significantly improved, though the average number of embedded photons are kept the same in both scenarios. Then the results reveal that for the case of initially correlated states of the chargers the amount of extractable energy, measured by ergotropy, is more than initially uncorrelated o…
