Let $1 \le r < n$ be integers. We give a proof that the group $\mathop{\mathrm{Aut}}({X_{n}^{\mathbb{N}}, σ_{n}})$ of automorphisms of the one-sided shift on $n$ letters embeds naturally as a subgroup $\mathcal{H}_{n}$ of the outer automorphism group $\mathop{\mathrm{Out}}({G_{n,r}})$ of the Higman-Thompson group $G_{n,r}$. From this, we can represent the elements of $\mathop{\mathrm{Aut}}({X_{n}^{\mathbb{N}}, σ_{n}})$ by finite state non-initial transducers admitting a very strong synchronizing condition.
Let $H \in \mathcal{H}_{n}$ and write $|H|$ for the number of states of the minimal transducer representing $H$. We show that $H$ can be written as a product of at most $|H|$ torsion elements. This result strengthens a similar result of Boyle, Franks and Kitchens, where the decomposition involves more complex torsion elements and also does not support practical \textit{a priori} estimates of the length of the resulting product.
We also explore the number of foldings of de Bruijn graphs and give a counting result for these for word length $2$ and alphabet size $n$.
Finally, we offer new proofs of some known results about $\mathop{\mathrm{Aut}}({X_{n}^{\mathbb{N}}, σ_{n}})$.
We give a direct proof that all Higman-Thompson groups of the form $G_{k,1}$ (for $k \ge 2$) are embedded in one another, which is a recent result of N. Matte Bon. This extends the embeddings given by Higman in 1974.
We show that Brin's generalisations $2V$ and $3V$ of the Thompson-Higman group $V$ are of type $FP_\infty$. Our methods also give a new proof that both groups are finitely presented.
A slight modification of the definition of the Thompson-Higman groups G_k1 and F_k1 leads to inverse monoids that map onto G_k1 (respectively F_k1), and that have interesting properties: they are finitely generated, and residually finite. These inverse monoids are closely related to the suffix expansion of G_k1 (respectively F_k1).
An introduction to the universal algebra approach to Higman-Thompson groups (including Thompson's group $V$) is given, following a series of lectures by Graham Higman in 1973. In these talks, Higman outlined an algorithm for the conjugacy problem; which although essentially correct fails in certain cases, as we show here. A revised and complete version of the algorithm is written out explicitly. From this, we construct an algorithm for the power conjugacy problem in these groups. Python implementations of these algorithms can be found at [26].
We investigate stabilizers of finite sets of rational points in Cantor space for the Higman-Thompson groups $V_{n,r}$. We prove that the pointwise stabilizer is an iterated ascending HNN extension of $V_{n,q}$ for any $q\geq 1$. We also prove that the commutator subgroup of the pointwise stabilizer is simple, and we compute the abelianization. Finally, for each $n$ we classify such pointwise stabilizers up to isomorphism.
The Bernoulli measure on strings is used to define height functions for the dense R- and L-orders of the Thompson-Higman monoids M_{k,1}. The measure can also be used to characterize the D-relation of certain submonoids of M_{k,1}. The computational complexity of computing the Bernoulli measure of certain sets, and in particular, of computing the R- and L-height of an element of M_{k,1} is investigated.
We generalize the Brin-Higman-Thompson groups $n G_{k,1}$ to monoids $n M_{k,1}$, for $n \ge 1$ and $k \ge 2$, by replacing bijections by partial functions. The monoid $n M_{k,1}$ has $n G_{k,1}$ as its group of units, and is congruence-simple. Moreover, $n M_{k,1}$ is finitely generated, and for $n \ge 2$ its word problem is {\sf coNP}-complete. We also present new results about higher-dimensional joinless codes.
The co-word problem of a group G generated by a set X is defined as the set of words in X which do not represent 1 in G. We introduce a new method to decide if a permutation group has context-free co-word problem. We use this method to show, that the Higman-Thompson groups, and therefore the Houghton groups, have context-free co-word problem. We also give some examples of groups, that even have an easier co-word problem. We call this property semi-deterministic context-free. The second Houghton group belongs to this class.
We show that the word problem of the Brin-Higman-Thompson group $n G_{k,1}$ is {\sf coNP}-complete for all $n \ge 2$ and all $k \ge 2$. For this we prove that $n G_{k,1}$ is finitely generated, and that $n G_{k,1}$ contains a subgroup of $2 G_{2,1}$ that can represent bijective circuits. We also show that for all $n \ge 1$ and $k \ge 2$: \ If $\,K = 1 + (k-1)\,N\,$ for some $N \ge 1$, then $n G_{K,1} \le n G_{k,1}$. In particular, $n G_{K,1} \le n G_{2,1}$ for all $K \ge 2$.
Let $m, m', r, r',t, t'$ be positive integers with $r, r' \ge 2$. Let $L_r$ denote the ring that is universal with an invertible $1 \times r$ matrix. Let $M_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ denote the ring of $m \times m$ matrices over the tensor product of $t$ copies of $L_r$. In a natural way, $M_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ is a partially ordered ring with involution. Let $PU_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ denote the group of positive unitary elements. We show that $PU_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ is isomorphic to the Brin-Higman-Thompson group $t V_{r,m}$; the case $t =1$ was found by Pardo, that is, $PU_m(L_r)$ is isomorphic to t…
We consider the subgroup lpG_{k,1} of length preserving elements of the Thompson-Higman group G_{k,1} and we show that all elements of G_{k,1} have a unique lpG_{k,1}.F_{k,1} factorization. This applies to the Thompson-Higman group T_{k,1} as well. We show that lpG_{k,1} is a ``diagonal'' direct limit of finite symmetric groups, and that lpT_{k,1} is a k^infinity Pr"ufer group. We find an infinite generating set of lpG_{k,1} which is related to reversible boolean circuits. We further investigate connections between the Thompson-Higman groups, circuits, and complexity. We show that elements of …
We describe, through the use of Rubin's theorem, the automorphism groups of the Higman-Thompson groups $G_{n,r}$ as groups of specific homeomorphisms of Cantor spaces $\mathfrak{C}_{n,r}$. This continues a thread of research begun by Brin, and extended later by Brin and Guzmán: to characterise the automorphism groups of the `Chameleon groups of Richard Thompson,' as Brin referred to them in 1996. The work here completes the first stage of that twenty-year-old program, containing (amongst other things) a characterisation of the automorphism group of $V$, which was the `last chameleon.' The home…
We prove that the only finite factor-representations of the Higman-Thompson groups $\{F_{n,r}\}$, $ \{G_{n,r}\}$ are the regular representations and scalar representations arising from group abelianizations. As a corollary, we obtain that any measure-preserving ergodic action of a simple Higman-Thompson group must be essentially free. Finite factor representations of other classes of groups are also discussed.
The Thompson-Higman groups G_{k,i} have a natural generalization to monoids M_{k,i}, and inverse monoids Inv_{k,i}. We study some structural features of M_{k,i} and Inv_{k,i} and investigate the computational complexity of decision problems. The main interest of these monoids is their close connection with circuits and circuit complexity. The maximal subgroups of M_{k,1} are isomorphic to the groups G_{k,j} (1 \leq j \leq k-1); so we rediscover all the Thompson-Higman groups within M_{k,1}. The Green relations \leq_J and \equiv_D of M_{k,1} can be decided in deterministic polynomial time when …
We study the monoid generalization M_{k,1} of the Thompson-Higman groups, and we characterize the R- and the L-preorder of M_{k,1}. Although M_{k,1} has only one non-zero J-class and k-1 non-zero D-classes, the R- and the L-preorder are complicated; in particular, <_R is dense (even within an L-class), and <_L is dense (even within an R-class). We study the computational complexity of the R- and the L-preorder. When inputs are given by words over a finite generating set of M_{k,1}, the R- and the L-preorder decision problems are in P. The main result of the paper is that over a "circuit-like" …
Every representation of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_n$ leads to a unitary representation of the Higman-Thompson group $V_n$. We consider the family $\{π_x\}_{x\in [0,1[}$ of permutative representations of $\mathcal{O}_n$ that arise from the interval map $f(x)=nx$ (mod 1) acting on the Hilbert space that underlies each orbit, and then study the unitary equivalence and the irreducibility of the corresponding family $\{ρ_x\}_{x\in [0,1[}$ of representations of Higman-Thompson group $V_n$, showing that that these representations are indeed irreducible and moreover $ρ_x$ and $ρ_y$ are equivalent…
Structure monoids and groups are algebraic invariants of equational varieties. We show how to construct presentations of these objects from coherent categorifications of equational varieties, generalising several results of Dehornoy. We subsequently realise the higher Thompson groups $F_{n,1}$ and the Higman-Thompson groups $G_{n,1}$ as structure groups. We go on to obtain presentations of these groups via coherent categorifications of the varieties of higher-order associativity and of higher-order associativity and commutativity, respectively. These categorifications generalise Mac Lane's pen…
We prove that Thompson's group $V$ is acyclic, answering a 1992 question of Brown in the positive. More generally, we identify the homology of the Higman-Thompson groups $V_{n,r}$ with the homology of the zeroth component of the infinite loop space of the mod $n-1$ Moore spectrum. As $V = V_{2,1}$, we can deduce that this group is acyclic. Our proof involves establishing homological stability with respect to $r$, as well as a computation of the algebraic K-theory of the category of finitely generated free Cantor algebras of any type $n$.
In this paper, we will study presentations of the continuous full group $Γ_A$ of a one-sided topological Markov shift $(X_A,σ_A)$ for an irreducible matrix $A$ with entries in $\{0,1\}$ as a generalization of Higman-Thompson groups $V_N, 1<N \in {\mathbb{N}}$. We will show that the group $Γ_A$ can be represented as a group $Γ_A^{\operatorname{tab}}$ of matrices, called $A$-adic tables, with entries in admissible words of the shift space $X_A$, and a group $Γ_A^{\operatorname{PL}}$ of right continuous piecewise linear functions, called $A$-adic PL functions, on $[0,1]$ with finite singularities…
We construct a finitely presented group with coNP-complete word problem, and a finitely generated simple group with coNP-complete word problem. These groups are represented as Thompson groups, hence as partial transformation groups of strings. The proof provides a simulation of combinational circuits by elements of the Thompson-Higman group G_{3,1}.
Let $Λ$ be a row-finite and source-free higher rank graph with finitely many vertices. In this paper, we define the Higman-Thompson like group $\Lht$ of the graph C*-algebra $\mathcal{O}_Λ$ to be a special subgroup of the unitary group in $Ø_Λ$. It is shown that $\Lht$ is closely related to the topological full groups of the groupoid associated with $Λ$. Some properties of $\Lht$ are also investigated. We show that its commutator group $\DLht$ is simple and that $\DLht$ has only one nontrivial uniformly recurrent subgroup if $Λ$ is aperiodic and strongly connected. Furthermore, if $Λ$ is singl…
The main result of this article is that any braided (resp. annular, planar) diagram group $D$ splits as a short exact sequence $1 \to R \to D \to S \to 1$ where $R$ is a subgroup of some right-angled Artin group and $S$ a subgroup of Thompson's group $V$ (resp. $T$, $F$). As an application, we show that several braided diagram groups embeds into Thompson's group $V$, including Higman's groups $V_{n,r}$, groups of quasi-automorphisms $QV_{n,r,p}$, and generalised Houghton's groups $H_{n,p}$.
The recent paper "The further chameleon groups of Richard Thompson and Graham Higman: automorphisms via dynamics for the Higman groups $G_{n,r}$" of Bleak, Cameron, Maissel, Navas and Olukoya (BCMNO) characterises the automorphisms of the Higman-Thompson groups $G_{n,r}$ as the specific subgroup of the rational group $\mathcal{R}_{n,r}$ of Grigorchuk, Nekrashevych and Suchanski{\u i}'s consisting of those elements which have the additional property of being bi-synchronizing. In this article, we extend the arguments of BCMNO and characterise the automorphism group of $T_{n,r}$ as a subgroup of …
In this article, we further explore the nature of a connection between the groups of automorphisms of full shift spaces and the groups of outer automorphisms of the Higman--Thompson groups $\{G_{n,r}\}$. We show that the quotient of the group of automorphisms of the (two-sided) shift dynamical system $\mathrm{Aut}(X_n^{\mathbb{N}}, σ_{n})$ by its centre embeds as a particular subgroup $\mathcal{L}_{n}$ of the outer automorphism group $\mathop{\mathrm{Out}}(G_{n,n-1})$ of $G_{n,n-1}$. It follows by a result of Ryan that we have the following central extension: $$\langle σ_{n}\rangle \hookrighta…
The Arithmetic is interpreted in all the groups of Richard Thompson and Graham Higman, as well as in other groups of piecewise affine permutations of an interval which generalize the groups of Thompson and Higman. In particular, the elementary theories of all these groups are undecidable. Moreover, Thompson's group $F$ and some of its generalizations interpret the Arithmetic without parameters.

We revisit our construction of the Thompson groups from the polycyclic inverse monoids in the light of new research. Specifically, we prove that the Thompson group $G_{n,1}$ is the group of units of a Boolean inverse monoid $C_{n}$ called the Cuntz inverse monoid. This inverse monoid is proved to be the tight completion of the polycyclic inverse monoid $P_{n}$. The étale topological groupoid associated with $C_{n}$ under non-commutative Stone duality is the usual groupoid associated with the corresponding Cuntz $C^{\ast}$-algebra. We then show that the group $G_{n,1}$ is also the group of auto…
We consider generalisations of Thompson's group $V$, denoted $V_r(Σ)$, which also include the groups of Higman, Stein and Brin. We show that, under some mild hypotheses, $V_r(Σ)$ is the full automorphism group of a Cantor-algebra. Under some further minor restrictions, we prove that these groups are of type $\mathrm{F}_\infty$ and that this implies that also centralisers of finite subgroups are of type $\mathrm{F}_\infty$.
We consider generalisations of Thompson's group $V$, denoted by $V_r(Σ)$, which also include the groups of Higman, Stein and Brin. It was shown by the authors in [20] that under some mild conditions these groups and centralisers of their finite subgroups are of type $\mathrm{F}_\infty$. Under more general conditions we show that the groups $V_r(Σ)$ are finitely generated and, under the mild conditions mentioned above, we see that they are finitely presented and give a recipe to find explicit presentations. For the centralisers of finite subgroups we find a suitable infinite presentation and th…
We define a family of groups that generalises Thompson's groups $T$ and $G$ and also those of Higman, Stein and Brin. For groups in this family we descrine centralisers of finite subgroups and show, that for a given finite subgroup $Q$, there are finitely many conjugacy classes of finite subgroups isomorphic to $Q$. We use this to show that whenever defined, the T versions of these groups have a slightly weaker property, quasi-$\underline{\operatorname F}_\infty$, to that of a group possessing a finite type model for the classifying space for proper actions ${\underline{E}}G$ if and only if th…
This note serves as a short and reader-friendly introduction to twisted Brin-Thompson groups, which were recently constructed by Belk and the author to provide a family of simple groups with a variety of interesting properties. Most notably, twisted Brin-Thompson groups can be used to show that every finitely generated group quasi-isometrically embeds as a subgroup of a finitely generated simple group. Another important application is a concrete construction of a family of simple groups with arbitrary finiteness length. In addition to giving a concise introduction to the groups and these appli…
In a seminal paper, Brin demonstrates that the outerautomorphism group of Thompson group $T$ is isomorphic to the cyclic group of order two. In this article, building on characterisation of automorphisms of the Higman-Thompson groups $G_{n,r}$ and $T_{n,r}$ as groups of transducers, we give a new proof, automata theoretic in nature, of Brin's result. We also demonstrate that the group of outerautomorphisms of Thompson's group $V = G_{2,1}$ contains an isomorphic copy of Thompson's group $F$. This extends a result of the author demonstrating that whenever $n \ge 3$ and $1 \le r < n$ the outerau…
We show that for a large class $\mathcal{C}$ of finitely generated groups of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the real line, the following holds: Given a group $G$ of rank $k$ in $\mathcal{C}$, there is a sequence of $k$-markings $(G, S_n), n\in \mathbf{N}$ whose limit in the space of marked groups is the free group of rank $k$ with the standard marking. The class we consider consists of groups that admit actions satisfying mild dynamical conditions and a certain "self-similarity" type hypothesis. Examples include Thompson's group $F$, Higman-Thompson groups, Stein-Thompson groups, var…
We show that for any full and sufficiently transitive (i.e. \textit{flexible}) group $G$ of homeomorphisms of Cantor space, $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathrm{Aut}(G)) = \mathrm{Aut}(G)$. This class contains many generalisations of the Higman-Thompson groups $G_{n,r}$, and the Rational group $\mathcal{R}_{2}$ of Grigorchuk, Nekrashevych, and Suchanski{\u ı}. We also demonstrate that for generalisations $T_{n,r}$ of R. Thompson's group $T$, $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathrm{Aut}(T_{n,r}))= \mathrm{Aut}(T_{n,r})$. In the case of the groups $G_{n,r}$ and $T_{n,r}$ our results extend results of Brin and Guzm{\' a}n for Th…
Every finite simple group can be generated by two elements, and Guralnick and Kantor proved that, moreover, every nontrivial element is contained in a generating pair. Groups with this property are said to be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated. Thompson's group $V$ was the first finitely presented infinite simple group to be discovered. The Higman--Thompson groups $V_n$ and the Brin--Thompson groups $mV$ are two families of finitely presented groups that generalise $V$. In this paper, we prove that all of the groups $V_n$, $V_n'$ and $mV$ are $\frac{3}{2}$-generated. As far as the authors are aware, the …
We show how all topological full groups coming from a one-sided irreducible shift of finite type, as studied by Matui, can be re-interpreted as groups of colour-preserving tree almost automorphisms. As an application, we show that they admit t.d.l.c. completions of arbitrary finite local prime content. This applies in particular to Thompson's $V$.
Let n be bigger than 1 and let A be an element in the Higman-Thompson group V_n. We study the structure of the centralizer of a in V_n through a careful analysis of the action of the group generated by A on the Cantor set C. We make use of revealing tree pairs as developed by Brin and Salazar from which we derive discrete train tracks to assist us in our analysis. A consequence of our structure theorem is that centralizers are finitely generated. Along the way we give a short argument using revealing tree pairs which shows that cyclic groups are undistorted in V_n.
The groups G_{k,1} of Richard Thompson and Graham Higman can be generalized in a natural way to monoids, that we call M_{k,1}, and to inverse monoids, called Inv_{k,1}; this is done by simply generalizing bijections to partial functions or partial injective functions. The monoids M_{k,1} have connections with circuit complexity (studied in another paper). Here we prove that M_{k,1} and Inv_{k,1} are congruence-simple for all k. Their Green relations J and D are characterized: M_{k,1} and Inv_{k,1} are J-0-simple, and they have k-1 non-zero D-classes. They are submonoids of the multiplicative p…
