In this paper, we investigate the 2-rank of the class group of some real cyclic quartic number fields. Precisely, we consider the case where the quadratic subfield is Q(\sqrt{l}) with l congruent to 5 modulo 8 is a prime.
We construct a family of quartic polynomials with cyclic Galois group and show that the roots of the polynomials are fundamental units or generate a subgroup of index 5.
Let $P(X)\in\mathbb{Z}[X]$ be an irreducible, monic, quartic polynomial with cyclic or dihedral Galois group. We prove that there exists a constant $c_P>0$ such that for a positive proportion of integers $n$, $P(n)$ has a prime factor $\ge n^{1+c_P}$.
In this paper, we determine the 2-rank of the class group of certain classes of real cyclic quartic number fields. Precisely, we consider the case in which the quadratic subfield is Q(\sqrt{l}) with l=2 or a prime congruent to 1 mod 8.
We are interested in solving the congruences $f^3+g^3+1\equiv 0\pmod{fg}$ and $f^4-4g^2+4\equiv 0\pmod{fg}$ in polynomials $f, g$ with rational coefficients. Moreover, we present results of computations of all integer points on certain one parametric curves of genus 1 and 3, related to cubic and quartic fields, respectively.
Let $p$ be a prime number such that $p=2$ or $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$. Let $\varepsilon_p$ denote the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ and let $a$ be a positive square-free integer. The main aim of this paper is to determine explicitly the Hilbert genus field of the imaginary cyclic quartic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-a\varepsilon_p\sqrt{p}})$.

For a given group $G$ and an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a number field $K$, I discuss the problem of finding $G$-extensions of $K$ over which $E$ gains rank. I prove the following theorem, extending a result of Fearnley, Kisilevsky, and Kuwata: Let $n = 3,4,$ or $6$. If $K$ contains its $n^{th}$-roots of unity then, for any elliptic curve $E$ over $K$, there are infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$-extensions of $K$ over which $E$ gains rank.
Let zeta5 be a primitive fifth root of unity and d<>1 be a quadratic fundamental discriminant not divisible by 5. For the 5-dual cyclic quartic field M=Q((zeta5-zeta5^-1)*d^1/2) of the quadratic fields k1=Q(d^1/2) and k2=Q((5*d)^1/2) in the sense of the quintic reflection theorem, the possibilities for the isomophism type of the Galois group G(5,2)M=Gal(M(5,2)/M) of the second Hilbert 5-class field M(5,2) of M are investigated, when the 5-class group Cl5(M) is elementary bicyclic of rank two. Usually, the maximal unramified pro-5-extension M(5,infinity) of M coincides with M(5,2) already. The …
Tate first proposed a method to determine $K_2\mathcal{O}_F,$ the tame kernel of $F,$ and gave the concrete computations for some special quadratic fields with small discriminant. After that, many examples for quadratic fields with larger discriminants are given, and similar works also have been done for cubic fields and for some special quartic fields with discriminants not large. In the present paper, we investigate the case of more general imaginary cyclic quartic field $F=\mathbb{Q}\Big(\sqrt{-(D+B\sqrt{D})}\Big)$ with class number one and large discriminants. The key problem is how to dec…
Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[4]{pd^{2}})$ be a real pure quartic number field and $k=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ its real quadratic subfield, where $p\equiv 5\pmod 8$ is a prime integer and $d$ an odd square-free integer coprime to $p$. In this work, we calculate $r_2(K)$, the $2$-rank of the class group of $K$, in terms of the number of prime divisors of $d$ that decompose or remain inert in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$, then we will deduce forms of $d$ satisfying $r_2(K)=2$. In the last case, the $4$-rank of the class group of $K$ is given too.
A standard formula (1) leads to a proof of HT90, but requires proving the existence of $θ$ such that $α\ne 0$, so that $β=α/σ(α)$. We instead impose the condition (M), that taking $θ=1$ makes $α=0$. Taking $n=3$, we recover Shanks's simplest cubic fields. The "simplest" number fields of degrees 3 to 6, Washington's cyclic quartic fields, and a certain family of totally real cyclic extensions of $\Q(\cos(π/4m))$ all have defining polynomials whose zeroes satisfy \eqref{e:M}. Further investigation of (M) for $n=4$ leads to an elementary algebraic construction of a 2-parameter family of octic pol…
We study the behavior under twisting of the Selmer rank parities of a self-dual prime-degree isogeny on a principally polarized abelian variety defined over a number field, subject to compatibility relations between the twists and the isogeny. In particular, we study isogenies on abelian varieties whose Selmer rank parities are related to the rank parities of elliptic curves with $j$-invariant 0 or 1728, assuming the Shafarevich-Tate conjecture. Using these results, we show how to classify the conjectural rank parities of all quartic or sextic twists of an elliptic curve defined over a number …
We prove a theorem giving the asymptotic number of binary quartic forms having bounded invariants; this extends, to the quartic case, the classical results of Gauss and Davenport in the quadratic and cubic cases, respectively. Our techniques are quite general, and may be applied to counting integral orbits in other representations of algebraic groups. We use these counting results to prove that the average rank of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, when ordered by their heights, is bounded. In particular, we show that when elliptic curves are ordered by height, the mean size of the 2-Selmer gr…
We give a construction of unramified cyclic octic extensions of certain complex quadratic number fields. The binary quadratic form used in this construction also shows up in the theory of 2-descents on Pell conics and elliptic curves, as well as in the explicit description of cyclic quartic extensions.
We prove an asymptotic formula for class numbers of totlally imaginary quartic number fields, ie for number fields of degree 4 over Q with only complex embeddings. After previous work for real quadratic fields (Sarnak) and complex cubic fields (Deitmar), this is the last remaining case of number fields with unit rank one.
Let E be an elliptic curve over a number field K which admits a cyclic p-isogeny with p odd and semistable at primes above p. We determine the root number and the parity of the p-Selmer rank for E/K, in particular confirming the parity conjecture for such curves. We prove the analogous results for p=2 under the additional assumption that E is not supersingular at primes above 2.
We construct a new infinite family of pairs of imaginary cyclic fields of degree $(p-1)/2$ explicitly with both class numbers divisible by a given prime number $p$. For the proof, we use the fundamental unit of $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{p})$, certain units which are roots of a parametric quartic polynomial, the Kummer theory, the Gauss sums and the Jacobi sums, linear recurrence sequences, a consequence of the Weil conjecture and a result of Lenstra which is a generalization of Artin conjecture on primitive roots. Our result is based on the famous Scholz' results on pairs of quadratic fields $\mathbb Q…
We construct a family of ideals representing ideal classes of order 2 in quadratic number fields and show that relations between their ideal classes are governed by certain cyclic quartic extensions of the rationals.
In this paper, we investigate the size function $h^0$ for number fields. This size function is analogous to the dimension of the Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors on an algebraic curve. Van der Geer and Schoof conjectured that $h^0$ attains its maximum at the trivial class of Arakelov divisors. This conjecture was proved for all number fields with unit group of rank 0 and 1, and also for cyclic cubic fields which have unit group of rank two. We prove the conjecture also holds for totally imaginary cyclic sextic fields, another class of number fields with unit group of rank two.
We study the arithmetic of the twist of the Fermat quartic defined by $X^4 + Y^4 + Z^4 = 0$ which has no $\mathbb{Q}$-rational point. We calculate the Mordell--Weil group of the Jacobian variety explicilty. We show that the degree $0$ part of the Picard group is a free $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-module of rank $2$, whereas the Mordell--Weil group is a free $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-module of rank $3$. Thus the relative Brauer group is non-trivial. We also show that this quartic violates the local-global property for linear determinantal representations.
The size function for a number field is an analogue of the dimension of the Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors on an algebraic curve. It was conjectured to attain its maximum at the trivial class of Arakelov divisors. This conjecture was proved for many number fields with unit groups of rank one. Our research confirms that the conjecture also holds for cyclic cubic fields, which have unit groups of rank two.
We test the methods for computing the Picard group of a $K3$ surface in a situation of high rank. The examples chosen are resolutions of quartics in $\bP^3$ having 14 singularities of type $A_1$. Our computations show that the method of R. van Luijk works well when sufficiently large primes are used.
In this paper, we investigate the existence of an elementary abelian closure in characteristic not $2$ for biquadratic extensions. We discover that it exists for any non-cyclic extension. We make use of it to obtain a classification for this class of extensions up to isomorphism via descent. This permits us to describe the geometry of this moduli space in group theoretic terms. We also provide two families of polynomials with two parameters that can describe any quartic extensions.
This paper investigates which integers can appear as 2-Selmer ranks within the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve E defined over a number field K with E(K)[2] = Z/2Z. We show that if E does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]), then subject only to constant 2-Selmer parity, each non-negative integer appears infinitely often as the 2-Selmer rank of a quadratic twist of E. If E has a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]) but not over K, then we prove the same result for 2-Selmer ranks greater than or equal to r_2, the number of complex places of K. We also obtain results abo…
In [17], we proved a structure theorem on the Mordell-Weil group of abelian varieties over function fields that arise as the twists of abelian varieties by the cyclic covers of projective varieties in terms of the Prym varieties associated with covers. In this paper, we provide an explicit way to construct the abelian varieties with large ranks over the higher dimension function fields. To do so, we apply the above-mentioned theorem to the twists of Albanese varieties of the cyclic multiple planes.
One of the main themes in this thesis is the description of the signature of both the infinite place and the finite places in cubic function fields of any characteristic and quartic function fields of characteristic at least 5. For these purposes, we provide a new theory which can be applied to cubic and quartic function fields and to even higher dimensional function fields. One of the striking advantages of this theory to other existing methods is that is does not use the concept of p-adic completions and we can dispense of Cardano's formulae. Another key result comprises the construction of …
We study the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space of cyclic degree $\ell$ covers of the projective line in characteristic $p$ for distinct primes $p$ and $\ell$. The main result is about the intersection of the $p$-rank $0$ stratum with the boundary of the moduli space of curves. When $\ell=3$ and $p \equiv 2 \bmod 3$ is an odd prime, we prove that there exists a smooth trielliptic curve in characteristic $p$, with every genus $g$, signature type $(r,s)$ and $p$-rank $f$ satisfying the clear necessary conditions.
We study the structure of the Mordell--Weil group of elliptic curves over number fields of degree 2, 3, and 4. We show that if $T$ is a group, then either the class of all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with torsion subgroup $T$ is empty, or it contains curves of rank~0 as well as curves of positive rank. We prove a similar but slightly weaker result for cubic and quartic fields. On the other hand, we find a group $T$ and a quartic field $K$ such that among the elliptic curves over $K$ with torsion subgroup $T$, there are curves of positive rank, but none of rank~0. We find examples of …
This paper introduces two classes of totally real quartic number fields, one of biquadratic extensions and one of cyclic extensions, each of which has a non-principal Euclidean ideal. It generalizes techniques of Graves used to prove that the number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2},\sqrt{35})$ has a non-principal Euclidean ideal.
We study quadratic residue difference sets, GMW difference sets, and difference sets arising from monomial hyperovals, all of which are $(2^d-1, 2^{d-1}-1, 2^{d-2}-1)$ cyclic difference sets in the multiplicative group of the finite field $F_{2^d}$ of $2^d$ elements, with $d \geq 2$. We show that, except for a few cases with small $d$, these difference sets are all pairwise inequivalent. This is accomplished in part by examining their 2-ranks. The 2-ranks of all of these difference sets were previously known, except for those connected with the Segre and Glynn hyperovals. We determine the 2-ra…
There is a well-known asymptotic formula, due to W. M. Schmidt (1968) for the number of full-rank integer lattices of index at most $V$ in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. This set of lattices $L$ can naturally be partitioned with respect to the factor group $\mathbb{Z}^n/L$. Accordingly, we count the number of full-rank integer lattices $L \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^n$ such that $\mathbb{Z}^n/L$ is cyclic and of order at most $V$, and deduce that these co-cyclic lattices are dominant among all integer lattices: their natural density is $\left(ζ(6) \prod_{k=4}^n ζ(k)\right)^{-1} \approx 85\%$. The problem is motivat…
Let K be a field not of characteristic 2 such that every finite separable extension of K is cyclic. Let A be an abelian variety over K. If K is infinite, then A(K) is Zariski-dense in A. If K is not locally finite, the rank of A over K is infinite.
