In this paper, we consider the uniqueness of solutions to the 3d Navier-Stokes equations with initial vorticity given by $ω_0 = αe_z δ_{x = y = 0}$, where $δ_{x=y= 0}$ is the one dimensional Hausdorff measure of an infinite, vertical line and $α\in \mathbb R$ is an arbitrary circulation. This initial data corresponds to an idealized, infinite vortex filament. One smooth, mild solution is given by the self-similar Oseen vortex column, which coincides with the heat evolution. Previous work by Germain, Harrop-Griffiths, and the first author implies that this solution is unique within a class of mild solutions that converge to the Oseen vortex in suitable self-similar weighted spaces. In this paper, the uniqueness class of the Oseen vortex is expanded to include any solution that converges to the initial data in a sufficiently strong sense. This gives further evidence in support of the expectation that the Oseen vortex is the only possible mild solution that is identifiable as a vortex filament. The proof is a 3d variation of a 2d compactness/rigidity argument in $t \searrow 0$ originally due to Gallagher and Gallay.
We prove new existence and uniqueness results in full Sobolev spaces for the steady-state Oseen problem in a smooth exterior domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$. These results are then employed, on the one hand, in the study of analogous properties for the corresponding (linear) time-periodic case and, on the other hand and more significantly, to prove analogous properties for their nonlinear counterpart, at least for small data.
We consider the spatial-temporal behavior of the Navier-Stokes flow past a rigid body in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The present paper develops analysis in Lebesgue spaces with anisotropic weights $(1+|x|)^α(1+|x|-x_1)^β$, which naturally arise in the asymptotic structure of fluid when the translational velocity of the body is parallel to the $x_1$-direction. We derive anisotropically weighted $L^q$-$L^r$ estimates for the Oseen semigroup in exterior domains. As applications of those estimates, we study the stability/attainability of the Navier-Stokes flow in anisotropically weighted $L^q$ spaces to get t…
Consider the motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in a 3D exterior domain when a rigid body moves with prescribed time-dependent translational and angular velocities. For the linearized non-autonomous system, $L^q$-$L^r$ smoothing action near the initial time as well as generation of the evolution operator was shown by Hansel and Rhandi (J. Reine Angew. Math. 2014) under reasonable conditions. In this paper we develop the $L^q$-$L^r$ decay estimates of the evolution operator and then apply them to the Navier-Stokes initial value problem.
Consider the Navier-Stokes flow past a rotating obstacle with a general time-dependent angular velocity and a time-dependent outflow condition at infinity -- sometimes called an Oseen condition. By a suitable change of coordinates the problem is transformed to an non-autonomous problem with unbounded drift terms on a fixed exterior domain $Ω\subset \R^d$. It is shown that the solution to the linearized problem is governed by a strongly continuous evolution system $\{T_Ω(t,s)\}_{t\geq s\geq0}$ on $L^p_σ(Ω)$ for $1<p<\infty$. Moreover, $L^p$-$L^q$ smoothing properties and gradient estimates of $…
In this paper, we give resolvent estimates for the linearized operator of the Navier-Stokes equation in $\R^2$ around the Oseen vortices, in the fast rotating limit $α\to+\infty$.
Consider the Navier-Stokes flow past a rotating obstacle with a general time-dependent angular velocity and a time-dependent outflow condition at infinity. After rewriting the problem on a fixed domain, one obtains a non-autonomous system of equations with unbounded drift terms. It is shown that the solution to a model problem in the whole space case $\R^d$ is governed by a strongly continuous evolution system on $L^p_σ(\R^d)$ for $1<p<\infty$. The strategy is to derive a representation formula, similar to the one known in the case of non-autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equations. This explicit …
We present pointwise space-time decay estimates for the velocity part of solutions to the time-dependent Oseen system in 3D, with Dirichlet boundary conditions and vanishing velocity at infinity. In addition, similar estimates are derived for solutions to the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term, and for solutions to the stability problem associated with the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term.
Fundamental solutions to the time-periodic Stokes and Oseen linearizations of the Navier-Stokes equations in dimension $n\geq 2$ are investigated. Integrability properties and pointwise estimates are established.
By using a new bilinear estimate, a pointwise estimate of the generalized Oseen kernel and an idea of fractional bootstrap, we show in this note that solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with fractional dissipation are analytic in space variables.
We study the long-time behavior an extended Navier-Stokes system in $\R^2$ where the incompressibility constraint is relaxed. This is one of several "reduced models" of Grubb and Solonnikov '89 and was revisited recently (Liu, Liu, Pego '07) in bounded domains in order to explain the fast convergence of certain numerical schemes (Johnston, Liu '04). Our first result shows that if the initial divergence of the fluid velocity is mean zero, then the Oseen vortex is globally asymptotically stable. This is the same as the Gallay Wayne '05 result for the standard Navier-Stokes equations. When the in…
Let us consider the motion of a viscous incompressible fluid past a rotating rigid body in 3D, where the translational and angular velocities of the body are prescribed but time-dependent. In a reference frame attached to the body, we have the Navier-Stokes system with the drift and (one half of the) Coriolis terms in a fixed exterior domain. The existence of the evolution operator $T(t,s)$ in the space $L^q$ generated by the linearized non-autonomous system was proved by Hansel and Rhandi [26] and the large time behavior of $T(t,s)f$ in $L^r$ for $(t-s)\to\infty$ was then developed by the pre…
The asymptotic behavior of weak time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with a drift term in the three-dimensional whole space is investigated. The velocity field is decomposed into a time-independent and a remaining part, and separate asymptotic expansions are derived for both parts and their gradients. One observes that the behavior at spatial infinity is determined by the corresponding Oseen fundamental solutions.
An asymptotic expansion at spatial infinity of a weak time-periodic solution to the Navier-Stokes equations with a non-zero drift term in the three-dimensional whole-space is carried out. The asymptotic profile is explicitly identified and expressed in terms of the well-known Oseen fundamental solution. A pointwise estimate is given for the remainder term.
We consider weak (''Leray'') solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms, in an exterior domain. It is shown the velocity may be split into a constant times the first column of the fundamental solution of the Oseen system, plus a remainder term decaying pointwise near infinity at a rate which is higher than the decay rate of the Oseen tensor. This result improves the theory by M. Kyed, Asymptotic profile of a linearized flow past a rotating body, Q. Appl. Math. 71 (2013), 489-500.
We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain, with no-slip boundary conditions. We assume that the initial velocity is a finite-energy and L^q-summable perturbation of the Oseen vortex with circulation α, where 1 < q < 2. If α is sufficiently small, we show that the solution behaves asymptotically in time like the self-similar Oseen vortex with circulation α. This is a global stability result, which holds for arbitrarily large perturbations of the Oseen vortex, and our smallness assumption on the circulation is independent of the domain under cons…
We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary condition in the exterior of one obstacle. Assuming that the circulation at infinity of the velocity is sufficiently small, we prove that the large time behavior of the corresponding solution to the initial-boundary value problem is described by the Lamb-Oseen vortex. The later is the well-known explicit self-similar solution to the Navier-Stokes system in the whole space $\R^2$.
We show that the Navier-Stokes as well as a random perturbation of this equation can be derived from a stochastic variational principle where the pressure is introduced as a Lagrange multiplier. Moreover we describe how to obtain corresponding constants of the motion.
In this paper, we rigorously derive the compressible one-fluid Navier-Stokes equation from the scaled compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations locally in time under the assumption that the initial data are well prepared. We justify the singular limit by proving the uniform decay of the error system, which is obtained by elaborate energy estimates.
The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ model for fast rotating geophysical fluids is considered. The Navier-Stokes-$α$ model is a nonlinear dispersive regularization of the exact Navier-Stokes equations obtained by Lagrangian averaging and tend to the Navier-Stokes equations as $α\rightarrow 0^+$. We estimate upper bounds for the dimensions of global attractors and study the dependence of the dimensions on the parameter $α$. All the estimates are uniform in $α$, and our estimate of attractor dimensions remain finite when $α\rightarrow 0^+$.
We study Caccioppoli's inequalities of the non-stationary Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes equations. Our analysis is local near boundary and we prove that, in contrast to the interior case, the Caccioppoli's inequalities of the Stokes equations and the Navier-Stokes equations, in general, fail near boundary.
This paper studies two well-known models for two-phase fluid flow at constant temperature, the isothermal Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn and the isothermal Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations, both of which consist of equations for the (total) fluid density rho, the (mass-averaged)velocity u and the concentration (of one of the phases,) c. Assuming in either case that both phases are incompressible with different densities, each of the models is shown to reduce to a system of evolution equations in rho and u alone. In the case of the Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn model, this reduced system is the class…
An algebraic upper bound for the decay rate of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and Navier-Stokes-Coriolis equations in the critical space $\dot{H} ^{\frac{1}{2}} (\mathbb{R} ^3)$ is derived using the Fourier Splitting Method. Estimates are framed in terms of the decay character of initial data, leading to solutions with algebraic decay and showing in detail the roles played by the linear and nonlinear parts.
In this paper, we first prove the global well-posedness of a scaled anisotropic Navier-Stokes system and the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system in a 2-D striped domain with small analytic data in the tangential variable. Then we justify the limit from the anisotropic Navier-Stokes system to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system with analytic data.
In this paper, we shall establish the global well-posedness, the space-time analyticity of the Navier-Stokes equations for a class of large periodic data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. This improves the classical result of Koch \& Tataru \cite{koch-tataru}, for the global well-posedness with small initial data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
We study the stationary Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations with non-homogeneous Navier boundary condition in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{3}$ of class $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$. We prove existence, uniqueness of weak and strong solutions in $\mathbf{W}^{1,p}(Ω)$ and $\mathbf{W}^{2,p}(Ω)$ for all $1<p<\infty$ considering minimal regularity on the friction coefficient $α$. Moreover, we deduce uniform estimates on the solution with respect to $α$ which enables us to analyze the behavior of the solution when $α\rightarrow \infty$.
In this paper we prove a global well-posedness result for tridimensional Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq system with axisymmetric initial data. This system couples Navier-Stokes equations with a transport equation governing the density.
We introduce a framework to justify hydrodynamic limits of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system. We specifically study high friction regimes, which take into account the fact that particles of the dispersed phase are light (resp. small) compared to the fluid part, and lead to the derivation of Transport-Navier-Stokes (resp. Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes) systems.
In the note, a local regularity condition for axisymmetric solutions to the non-stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations is proven. It reads that axially symmetric energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations have no Type I blowups.
We introduce a concept of space-time holomorphic solutions of partial differential equations and construct a meromorphic solution of Navier-Stokes equations.
Multiple spatial zero formations for Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions are shown to occur according to nodal sets of solenoidal Hermite polynomials. Extensions to well-posed Burnett equations with the bi-harmonic viscosity operator are also discussed.
In this paper, we justify the limit from the Navier-Stokes system in a thin domain to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes/Prandtl system for the convex initial data with Gevrey 9/8 regualrity in $x$.
These notes are dedicated to the analysis of the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations. After a brief synthesis of the results obtained in [4] related to the existence and the asymptotic stability of partially congested profiles associated to the soft congestion Navier-Stokes system, we present a first local well-posedness result for the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations.
An enstrophy cascade is exhibited for the Navier-Stokes equations in physical scales independently of boundary conditions under physically reasonable assumptions on the flow.
In this paper, we prove existence of smooth solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations that gives a positive answer to the problem proposed by Fefferman [3].
In this paper, we study the upper bound of the time decay rate of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations and generalized Navier-Stokes equations with damping term $|u|^{β-1}u$ ($β>1$) in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
We study 2D Navier-Stokes equations with a constraint on $L^2$ energy of the solution. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a global solution for the constrained Navier-Stokes equation on $\R^2$ and $\T$, by a fixed point argument. We also show that the solution of constrained Navier-Stokes converges to the solution of Euler equation as viscosity $ν$ vanishes.
We discuss the regularity of solutions of 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by singular forces. The problem is motivated by the study of complex fluids modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations coupled to a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing microscopic corpora embedded in the fluid. This leads naturally to bounded added stress and hence to $W^{-1,\infty}$ forcing of the Navier-Stokes equations.
We address the issue of existence of weak solutions for the non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes system with Navier friction boundary conditions allowing the presence of vacuum zones and assuming rough conditions on the data. We also study the convergence, as the viscosity goes to zero, of weak solutions for the non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes system with Navier friction boundary conditions to the strong solution of the Euler equations with variable density, provided that the initial data converge in $L^{2}$ to a smooth enough limit.
We prove in this paper a decay estimate for scaling invariant local energy solutions for some toy-models related to the incompressible Navier-Stokes system.
The global well-posedness for the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Vlasov equations in two spatial dimensions is established by a priori estimates, the characteristic method and the semigroup analysis.
A Liouville type theorem is proven for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. It follows from the corresponding theorem on the Stokes equations with the drift. The drift is supposed to belong to a certain Morrey space.
In the note, a new regularity condition for axisymmetric solutions to the non-stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations is proven. It is slightly supercritical.
In this paper, we study the low Mach number limit of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with revised Maxwell law. By applying the uniform estimation of the error system, we prove that the solutions of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with time relaxation converge to that of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as the Mach number tends to zero. Moreover, the convergence rates are also obtained.
We extend Barker's weak-strong uniqueness results for the Navier--Stokes equations and consider a criterion involving Besov spaces and weighted Lebesgue spaces.
It is shown that any smooth solution to the stationary Navier-Stokes system in $R^3$ with the velocity field, belonging globally to $L_6$ and $BM0^{-1}$, must be zero.
A proof is given of the global existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to Navier-Stokes boundary problem. The proof is short and essentially self-contained.
Extending the work of Jia and Sverak on self-similar solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, we show the existence of large, forward, discretely self-similar solutions.
