Let us consider the motion of a viscous incompressible fluid past a rotating rigid body in 3D, where the translational and angular velocities of the body are prescribed but time-dependent. In a reference frame attached to the body, we have the Navier-Stokes system with the drift and (one half of the) Coriolis terms in a fixed exterior domain. The existence of the evolution operator $T(t,s)$ in the space $L^q$ generated by the linearized non-autonomous system was proved by Hansel and Rhandi [26] and the large time behavior of $T(t,s)f$ in $L^r$ for $(t-s)\to\infty$ was then developed by the present author [33] when $f$ is taken from $L^q$ with $q\leq r$. The contribution of the present paper concerns such $L^q$-$L^r$ decay estimates of $\nabla T(t,s)$ with optimal rates, which must be useful for the study of stability/attainability of the Navier-Stokes flow in several physically relevant situations. Our main theorem completely recovers the $L^q$-$L^r$ estimates for the autonomous case (Stokes and Oseen semigroups, those semigroups with rotating effect) in 3D exterior domains, which were established by [37], [42], [39], [36] and [44].
We prove new existence and uniqueness results in full Sobolev spaces for the steady-state Oseen problem in a smooth exterior domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$. These results are then employed, on the one hand, in the study of analogous properties for the corresponding (linear) time-periodic case and, on the other hand and more significantly, to prove analogous properties for their nonlinear counterpart, at least for small data.
We consider the motion of an incompressible viscous fluid filling the whole space exterior to a moving with rotation and translation obstacle. We show that the Stokes operator around the steady flow in the exterior of this obstacle generates a $C_0$-semigroup in $L^p$ space and then develop a series of $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates of such semigroup. As an application, we give out the stability of such steady flow when the initial disturbance in $L^3$ and the steady flow are sufficiently small.
We consider the spatial-temporal behavior of the Navier-Stokes flow past a rigid body in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The present paper develops analysis in Lebesgue spaces with anisotropic weights $(1+|x|)^α(1+|x|-x_1)^β$, which naturally arise in the asymptotic structure of fluid when the translational velocity of the body is parallel to the $x_1$-direction. We derive anisotropically weighted $L^q$-$L^r$ estimates for the Oseen semigroup in exterior domains. As applications of those estimates, we study the stability/attainability of the Navier-Stokes flow in anisotropically weighted $L^q$ spaces to get t…
Consider the Navier-Stokes flow past a rotating obstacle with a general time-dependent angular velocity and a time-dependent outflow condition at infinity -- sometimes called an Oseen condition. By a suitable change of coordinates the problem is transformed to an non-autonomous problem with unbounded drift terms on a fixed exterior domain $Ω\subset \R^d$. It is shown that the solution to the linearized problem is governed by a strongly continuous evolution system $\{T_Ω(t,s)\}_{t\geq s\geq0}$ on $L^p_σ(Ω)$ for $1<p<\infty$. Moreover, $L^p$-$L^q$ smoothing properties and gradient estimates of $…
We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain, with no-slip boundary conditions. We assume that the initial velocity is a finite-energy and L^q-summable perturbation of the Oseen vortex with circulation α, where 1 < q < 2. If α is sufficiently small, we show that the solution behaves asymptotically in time like the self-similar Oseen vortex with circulation α. This is a global stability result, which holds for arbitrarily large perturbations of the Oseen vortex, and our smallness assumption on the circulation is independent of the domain under cons…
We present pointwise space-time decay estimates for the velocity part of solutions to the time-dependent Oseen system in 3D, with Dirichlet boundary conditions and vanishing velocity at infinity. In addition, similar estimates are derived for solutions to the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term, and for solutions to the stability problem associated with the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Oseen term.
Consider the motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in a 3D exterior domain when a rigid body moves with prescribed time-dependent translational and angular velocities. For the linearized non-autonomous system, $L^q$-$L^r$ smoothing action near the initial time as well as generation of the evolution operator was shown by Hansel and Rhandi (J. Reine Angew. Math. 2014) under reasonable conditions. In this paper we develop the $L^q$-$L^r$ decay estimates of the evolution operator and then apply them to the Navier-Stokes initial value problem.
We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary condition in the exterior of one obstacle. Assuming that the circulation at infinity of the velocity is sufficiently small, we prove that the large time behavior of the corresponding solution to the initial-boundary value problem is described by the Lamb-Oseen vortex. The later is the well-known explicit self-similar solution to the Navier-Stokes system in the whole space $\R^2$.
We consider weak (''Leray'') solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms, in an exterior domain. It is shown the velocity may be split into a constant times the first column of the fundamental solution of the Oseen system, plus a remainder term decaying pointwise near infinity at a rate which is higher than the decay rate of the Oseen tensor. This result improves the theory by M. Kyed, Asymptotic profile of a linearized flow past a rotating body, Q. Appl. Math. 71 (2013), 489-500.
We study the long-time behavior of infinite-energy solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain, with no-slip boundary conditions. The initial data we consider are finite-energy perturbations of a smooth vortex with small circulation at infinity, but are otherwise arbitrarily large. Using a logarithmic energy estimate and some interpolation arguments, we prove that the solution approaches a self-similar Oseen vortex as $t \to \infty$. This result was obtained in collaboration with Yasunori Maekawa (Kobe University).
In this paper, we consider the uniqueness of solutions to the 3d Navier-Stokes equations with initial vorticity given by $ω_0 = αe_z δ_{x = y = 0}$, where $δ_{x=y= 0}$ is the one dimensional Hausdorff measure of an infinite, vertical line and $α\in \mathbb R$ is an arbitrary circulation. This initial data corresponds to an idealized, infinite vortex filament. One smooth, mild solution is given by the self-similar Oseen vortex column, which coincides with the heat evolution. Previous work by Germain, Harrop-Griffiths, and the first author implies that this solution is unique within a class of m…
Consider the time-periodic flow of an incompressible viscous fluid past a body performing a rigid motion with non-zero translational and rotational velocity. We introduce a framework of homogeneous Sobolev spaces that renders the resolvent problem of the associated linear problem well posed on the whole imaginary axis. In contrast to the cases without translation or rotation, the resolvent estimates are merely uniform under additional restrictions, and the existence of time-periodic solutions depends on the ratio of the rotational velocity of the body motion to the angular velocity associated …
This paper studies the stability of a stationary solution of the Navier-Stokes system with a constant velocity at infinity in an exterior domain. More precisely, this paper considers the stability of the Navier-Stokes system governing the stationary solution which belongs to the weak $L^3$-space $L^{3,\infty}$. Under the condition that the initial datum belongs to a solenoidal $L^{3 , \infty}$-space, we prove that if both the $L^{3,\infty}$-norm of the initial datum and the $L^{3,\infty}$-norm of the stationary solution are sufficiently small then the system admits a unique global-in-time stro…
Time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations that govern the flow of a viscous liquid past a three-dimensional body moving with a time-periodic velocity are investigated. The net motion of the body over a full time-period is assumed to be non-zero. In this case the appropriate linearization of the system is constituted by the time-periodic Oseen equations in a three-dimensional exterior domain. A priori Lp estimates are established for this linearization. Based on these estimates, existence of a solution to the fully non-linear Navier-Stokes problem is obtained by the contraction map…
We consider the motion of compressible Navier-Stokes fluids with the hard sphere pressure law around a rigid obstacle when the velocity and the density at infinity are non zero. This kind of pressure model is largely employed in various physical and industrial applications. We prove the existence of weak solution to the system in the exterior domain.
We consider the large time behavior of the Navier-Stokes flow past a rigid body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 3$. We first construct a small stationary solution possessing the optimal summability at spatial infinity, which is the same as that of the Oseen fundamental solution. When the translational velocity of the body gradually increases and is maintained after a certain finite time, we then show that the nonstationary fluid motion converges to the stationary solution corresponding to a small terminal velocity of the body as time $t\rightarrow\infty$ in $L^q$ with $q\in[n,\infty]$. This is c…

The asymptotic behavior of the vorticity for the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain is described in the case where the velocity at infinity $\boldsymbol{u}_{\infty}$ is nonzero. It is well known that the asymptotic behavior of the velocity field is given by the fundamental solution of the Oseen system which is the linearization of the Navier-Stokes equation around $\boldsymbol{u}_{\infty}$. The vorticity has the property of decaying algebraically inside a parabolic region called the wake and exponentially outside. The previously proven asymptotic…
We consider a fluid-structure interaction system composed by a rigid ball immersed into a viscous incompressible fluid. The motion of the structure satisfies the Newton laws and the fluid equations are the standard Navier-Stokes system. At the boundary of the fluid domain, we use the Tresca boundary conditions, that permit the fluid to slip tangentially on the boundary under some conditions on the stress tensor. More precisely, there is a threshold determining if the fluid can slip or not and there is a friction force acting on the part where the fluid can slip. Our main result is the existenc…
Consider the Navier-Stokes flow in 3-dimensional exterior domains, where a rigid body is translating with prescribed translational velocity $-h(t)u_\infty$ with constant vector $u_\infty\in \mathbb R^3\setminus\{0\}$. Finn raised the question whether his steady slutions are attainable as limits for $t\to\infty$ of unsteady solutions starting from motionless state when $h(t)=1$ after some finite time and $h(0)=0$ (starting problem). This was affirmatively solved by Galdi, Heywood and Shibata for small $u_\infty$. We study some generalized situation in which unsteady solutions start from large m…
We study existence, uniqueness and asymptotic spatial behavior of time-periodic strong solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, moving by time-periodic motion of given period $T$, when the data are sufficiently regular and small. Our contribution improves all previous ones in several directions. For example, we allow both translational, $\bfxi$, and angular, $\bfomega$, velocities of $\mathscr B$ to depend on time, and do not impose any restriction on the period $T$ nor on the averaged velocity, $\bar{\bfxi}$, of $\mathscr B$. If $\bfxi\not\equiv\…
In this paper, we consider steady Euler flows in two-dimensional bounded annuli, as well as in exterior circular domains, in punctured disks and in the punctured plane. We always assume rigid wall boundary conditions. We prove that, if the flow does not have any stagnation point, and if it satisfies further conditions at infinity in the case of an exterior domain or at the center in the case of a punctured disk or the punctured plane, then the flow is circular, namely the streamlines are concentric circles. In other words, the flow then inherits the radial symmetry of the domain. The proofs ar…
We study the spatial decay of time-periodic Navier-Stokes flow at the rate $|x|^{-1}$ with/without wake structure in 3D exterior domains when a rigid body moves periodically in time. In this regime the existence of time-periodic solutions was established first in the 2006 paper by Galdi and Silvestre, however, with little information about spatial behavior at infinity so that uniqueness of solutions was not available. This latter issue has been addressed by Galdi, who has recently succeeded in construction of a unique time-periodic solution with spatial behavior mentioned above if translationa…

In a domain of the Euclidean space, we estimate from below the distance to the boundary of global maximum points of solutions of elliptic and parabolic equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary values. As reference cases, we first consider the torsional rigidity function of a bar, the first mode of a vibrating membrane, and the temperature of a heat conductor grounded to zero at the boundary. Our main results are presented for domains with a mean convex boundary and compare that distance to the inradius of the relevant domain. For the torsional rigidity function, the obtained bound only de…
We study local and global properties of positive solutions of $-Δu=u^p]{\left |{\nabla u}\right |}^q$ in a domain $Ω$ of ${\mathbb R}^N$, in the range $1\<p+q$, $p\geq 0$, $0\leq q\< 2$. We first prove a local Harnack inequality and nonexistence of positive solutions in ${\mathbb R}^N$ when $p(N-2)+q(N-1) \<N$ or in an exterior domain if $p(N-2)+q(N-1)\<N$ and $0\leq q\<1$. Using a direct Bernstein method we obtain a first range of values of $p$ and $q$ in which $u(x)\leq c({\mathrm dist\,}(x,\partialΩ)^{\frac{q-2}{p+q-1}}$ This holds in particular if $p+q\<1+\frac{4}{n-1}$. Using an integral …
We show existence and uniqueness of regular time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, that moves by arbitrary (sufficiently smooth) time-periodic translational motion of the same period, provided the size of the data is suitably restricted. Moreover, we characterize the spatial asymptotic behavior of such solutions and prove, in particular, that if $\mathscr B$ has a nonzero net motion identified by a constant velocity $\bar{\mathbfξ}$ (say), then the solution exhibit a wake-like behavior in the direction $-\bar{\mathbfξ}$ entirely anal…
We show existence and uniqueness for small data of regular time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, that moves by time-periodic translational motion of the same period along a constant direction, $\bfe_1$, and spins with constant angular velocity $\bfomega$ parallel to $\bfe_1$. We also study the spatial asymptotic behavior of such solutions and show, in particular, that if $\mathscr B$ has a net motion characterized by a non-zero average translational velocity $\bar{\bfxi}$, then the solution exhibit a wake-like behavior in the direct…
Consider a rigid body ${\mathcal S} \subset {\mathbb R}^3$ immersed in an infinitely extended Navier-Stokes liquid and the motion of the body-fluid interaction system described from a reference frame attached to ${\mathcal S}$. We are interested in steady motions of this coupled system, where the region occupied by the fluid is the exterior domain $Ω= {\mathbb R}^3 \setminus {\mathcal S}$. This paper deals with the problem of using boundary controls $v_*$, acting on the whole $\partialΩ$ or just on a portion $Γ$ of $\partialΩ$, to generate a self-propelled motion of ${\mathcal S}$ with a targe…
