In this paper, an efficient massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detector is proposed by employing a deep neural network (DNN). Specifically, we first unfold an existing iterative detection algorithm into the DNN structure, such that the detection task can be implemented by deep learning (DL) approach. We then introduce two auxiliary parameters at each layer to better cancel multiuser interference (MUI). The first parameter is to generate the residual error vector while the second one is to adjust the relationship among previous layers. We further design the training procedure to optimize the auxiliary parameters with pre-processed inputs. The so derived MIMO detector falls into the category of model-driven DL. The simulation results show that the proposed MIMO detector can achieve preferable detection performance compared to the existing detectors for massive MIMO systems.
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a key technology for emerging next-generation wireless systems. Utilizing large antenna arrays at base-stations, massive MIMO enables substantial spatial multiplexing gains by simultaneously serving a large number of users. However, the complexity in massive MIMO signal processing (e.g., data detection) increases rapidly with the number of users, making conventional hand-engineered algorithms less computationally efficient. Low-complexity massive MIMO detection algorithms, especially those inspired or aided by deep learning, have emerged as a pr…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems have drawn significant interest recently in next-generation wireless communications. Accurate channel state information is essential in capitalizing the advantages of the massive MIMO technology. This paper proposes the application of the Ensemble Square Root Filter (EnSRF) and a variant of EnSRF, namely a Particle wise Update version of the Ensemble Square Root Filter (PUEnSRF) to estimate the time-selecti…
Hybrid Massive MIMO reduces implementation complexity but only supports beamforming coefficients that are common across all subbands. However, in macro cellular where the channel has limited degrees of freedom, the long-term component of the channel can be decomposed into a set of subband-independent beamforming basis functions referred to as eigenbeams. A Coherent Hybrid Massive MIMO system can form arbitrary linear combinations of the eigenbeams at every subband to mimic Digital Massive MIMO beamforming as observed across all locations in the cell.
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is now making its way to the standardization exercise of future 5G networks. On these grounds, we identify scenarios under which massive MIMO can potentially fail in Ricean channels, and characterize them physically, as well as, mathematically. Our analysis extends and generalizes a stream of recent papers on this topic and articulates emphatically that such harmful scenarios in Ricean fading conditions are …
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is becoming a mature technology, and has been approved for standardization in the 5G ecosystem. Although there is a large body of papers on the theoretical analysis of massive MIMO, the majority of relevant work assumes the simplified, yet overly idealistic, Kronecker-type model for spatial correlation. Motivated by the deficiencies of the Kronecker model, we invoke a naturally generalized spatial correlation model, that is the Weichselberger model. For this model, we pursue a comprehensive analysis of massive MIMO performance in terms of channel h…
In this paper, we propose a novel joint caching and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission scheme, referred to as cache-aided massive MIMO, for advanced downlink cellular communications. In addition to reaping the conventional advantages of caching and massive MIMO, the proposed scheme also exploits the side information provided by cached files for interference cancellation at the receivers. This interference cancellation increases the degrees of freedom available for precoding design. In addition, the power freed by the cache-enabled offloading can benefit the transmission…
The high spectral efficiency of massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) is mainly achieved through the exploitation of spatial multiplexing, i.e. by using a high number of MIMO layers that are applied simultaneously to many users. This letter focuses on integrating rate-splitting multiple-access (RSMA) with time-division-duplex Cell-free Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) for massive machine-type communications. Due to the large number of devices, their sporadic access behaviour and limited coherence interval, we assume a random access strategy with all active devices utilizing the same pilot for uplink channel estimation. This gives rise to a highly pilot-contaminated scenario, which inevitably deteriorates channel estimates. Motivated by the robustness of RSMA towards imperfect channel state information, we…
Low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have been considered as a practical and promising solution for reducing cost and power consumption in massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. Unfortunately, low-resolution ADCs significantly distort the received signals, and thus make data detection much more challenging. In this paper, we develop a new deep neural network (DNN) framework for efficient and low-complexity data detection in low-resolution massive MIMO systems. Based on reformulated maximum likelihood detection problems, we propose two model-driven DNN-based detect…

Algorithms for Massive MIMO uplink detection and downlink precoding typically rely on a centralized approach, by which baseband data from all antenna modules are routed to a central node in order to be processed. In the case of Massive MIMO, where hundreds or thousands of antennas are expected in the base-station, said routing becomes a bottleneck since interconnection throughput is limited. This paper presents a fully decentralized architecture and an algorithm for Massive MIMO uplink detection and downlink precoding based on the Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) method, which does not requir…
Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) technology plays a prominent role in the beyond fifth-generation (5G) networks. This work proposes a CF M-MIMO detector referred to as CF expectation propagation (CF-EP) that incorporates the pilot contamination when calculating the posterior belief. The simulation results show that the proposed detector achieves significant im…

Massive MIMO, a key technology for increasing area spectral efficiency in cellular systems, was developed assuming moderately sized apertures. In this paper, we argue that massive MIMO systems behave differently in large-scale regimes due to spatial non-stationarity. In the large-scale regime, with arrays of around fifty wavelengths, the terminals see the whole array but non-stationarities occur because different regions of the array see different propagation paths. At even larger dimensions, which we call the extra-large scale regime, terminals see a portion of the array and inside the first …
