Cell-free Massive MIMO (mMIMO) is envisaged to be a next-generation technology beyond 5G with its high spectral efficiency and superior spatial diversity as compared to that of conventional MIMO technology. The main principle is that many distributed access points (APs) cooperate to simultaneously serve all the users within the network without creating cell boundaries. This paper considers the uplink of a cell-free mMIMO system utilizing the radio stripe network architecture. We propose a novel sequential processing algorithm with normalized linear minimum mean square error (N-LMMSE) combining…
Employing massively distributed antennas brings radio access points (RAPs) closer to users, thus enables aggressive spectrum reuse that can bridge gaps between the scarce spectrum resource and extremely high connection densities in future wireless systems. Examples include cloud radio access network (C-RAN), ultra-dense network (UDN), and cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. These systems are usually designed in the form of fiber-wireless communications (FWC), where distributed antennas or RAPs are connected to a central unit (CU) through optical front-hauls. A larg…
Ubiquitous cell-free massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) combines massive MIMO technology and user-centric transmission in a distributed architecture. All the access points (APs) in the network cooperate to jointly and coherently serve a smaller number of users in the same time-frequency resource. However, this coordination needs significant amounts of control signalling which introduces additional overhead, while data co-processing increases the back/front-haul requirements. Hence, the notion that the "whole world" could constitute one network, and that all APs would act as a single…
Since the first cellular networks were trialled in the 1970s, we have witnessed an incredible wireless revolution. From 1G to 4G, the massive traffic growth has been managed by a combination of wider bandwidths, refined radio interfaces, and network densification, namely increasing the number of antennas per site. Due its cost-efficiency, the latter has contributed the most. Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) is a key 5G technology that uses massive antenna arrays to provide a very high beamforming gain and spatially multiplexing of users, and hence, increases the spectral and energ…
Cell-free Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) is a promising distributed network architecture for 5G-and-beyond systems. In this study, we propose two distributed precoding schemes, referred to as \textit{local partial zero-forcing} (PZF) and \textit{local protective partial zero-forcing} (PPZF), that further improve the spectral efficiency by providing an adaptable trade-off…
We develop two distributed downlink resource allocation algorithms for user-centric, cell-free, spatially-distributed, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks. In such networks, each user is served by a subset of nearby transmitters that we call distributed units or DUs. The operation of the DUs in a region is controlled by a central unit (CU). Our first scheme is implemented at the DUs, while the second is implemented at the CUs controlling these DUs. We define a hybrid quality of service metric that enables distributed optimization of system resources in a proportional fair manner. Sp…
The nonlinear Shannon capacity limit has been identified as the fundamental barrier to the maximum rate of transmitted information in optical communications. In long-haul high-bandwidth optical networks, this limit is mainly attributed to deterministic Kerr-induced fiber nonlinearities and from the interaction of amplified spontaneous emission noise from cascaded optical amplifiers with fiber nonlinearity: the stochastic parametric noise amplification. Unlike earlier impractical approaches that compensate solely deterministic nonlinearities, here we demonstrate a novel electronic-based deep ne…

In the case of sensors, a noiseless transmission enables to monitor a large quantity of mechanical events along the fibre. This paper aims at extending the perspectives of DAS systems with regard to technology breakthroughs introduced in long haul transmission…
We consider a Fog Radio Access Network (F-RAN) with a Base Band Unit (BBU) in the cloud and multiple cache-enabled enhanced Remote Radio Heads (eRRHs). The system aims at delivering contents on demand with minimal average latency from a time-varying library of popular contents. Information about uncached requested files can be transferred from the cloud to the eRRHs by following either backhaul or fronthaul modes. The backhaul mode transfers fractions of the requested files, while the fronthaul mode transmits quantized baseband samples as in Cloud-RAN (C-RAN). The backhaul mode allows the cach…
We propose a novel uplink communication method, coined random orthogonalization, for federated learning (FL) in a massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system. The key novelty of random orthogonalization comes from the tight coupling of FL model aggregation and two unique characteristics of massive MIMO - channel hardening and favorable propagation. As a result, random orthogonalization can achieve natural over-the-air model aggregation without requiring transmitter side channel state information, while significantly reducing the channel estimation overhead at the receiver…
Massive access is one of the main use cases of beyond 5G (B5G) wireless networks and massive MIMO is a key technology for supporting it. Prior works studied massive access in the co-located massive MIMO framework. Each active device transmits a pre-assigned non-orthogonal pilot sequence to the APs and the APs send the received signals to a central processing unit (CPU) for joint activity detection. We formulate the maximum likelihood…
In this paper, we obtain asymptotic expressions for the ergodic capacity of the keyhole multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in independent and identically distributed Nakagami-$m$ fading conditions with perfect channel state information at the transmitter and receiver. We show that the low-SNR capacity of this keyhole MIMO channel scales proportionally as $\frac{\textrm{SNR}}{4} \log^2 \left(1/{\textrm{SNR}}\right)$. Our main contribution is to identify a surprising result that the low-SNR capacity of the MIMO fading channel increases in the presenc…
We consider cooperative radio access network architectures, especially distributed massive MIMO and Cloud RAN, considering their similarities and differences. We address in particular the major challenge posed to both by the implementation of a high capacity fronthaul network to link the distributed access points to the central processing unit, and consider the effect on uplink performance of quantization of received signals in order to limit fronthaul load. We use the Bussgang decomposition along with a new approach to MMSE estimation of both channel and data to provide the basis of our analy…
Massive multiple-input-multiple-output (M-MIMO) features a capability for spatial multiplexing of large number of users. This number becomes even more extreme in extra-large (XL-MIMO), a variant of M-MIMO where the antenna array is of very large size. Yet, the problem of signal processing complexity in M-MIMO is further exacerbated by the XL size of the array. The basic processing problem boils down to a sparse system of linear equations that can be addressed by the randomized Kaczmarz (RK) algorithm. This algorithm has recently been applied to devise low-complexity M-MIMO receivers; however, …

We develop successive interference cancellation receivers based on the proposed joint AGC and LRA-MMSE (AGC-LRA-MMSE) approach. An analysis of the achievable sum rates is also carrie…
An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), consisting of reconfigurable metamaterials, can be used to partially control the radio environment and thereby bring new features to wireless communications. Previous works on IRS have particularly studied the range extension use case and under what circumstances the new technology can beat relays. In this paper, we study another use case that might have a larger impact on the channel capacity: rank improvement. One of the classical bottlenecks of point-to-point MIMO communications is that the capacity gains provided by spatial multiplexing are only lar…

New, scalable technology is needed to meet future demands on long connectivity ranges, support for fast-moving drones, and the possibility to simultaneously communicate with entire swar…
The wireless research community has expressed major interest in the sub-terahertz band for enabling mobile communications in future wireless networks. The sub-terahertz band offers a large amount of available bandwidth and, therefore, the promise to realize wireless communications at optical speeds. At such high frequency bands, the transceivers need to have larger apertures and need to be deployed more densely than at lower frequency bands. These factors proportionally increase the far-field limit and the spherical curvature of the electromagnetic waves cannot be ignored anymore. This offers …

In addition, the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation is adopted to combat the dynamics of the terrestrial-satellite link. We first analyze the input-output relationship of the single-input single-output OTFS when the large delay and Doppler shift both exist, and then extend it to the gran…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) architecture is the workhorse of modern communication systems. Currently, two fundamental bottlenecks, namely, power consumption and receiver saturation, limit the full potential achievement of this technology. These bottlenecks are intricately linked with the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) used in each radio frequency (RF) chain. The power consumption in MIMO systems grows exponentially with the ADC's bit budget while ADC saturation causes permanent loss of information. This motivates the need for a solution that can simultaneously tackle the…

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar has several advantages with respect to the traditional radar array systems in terms of performance and flexibility. However, in order to achieve high angular resolution, a MIMO radar requires a large number of transmit and receive antennas, which increases hardware design and computational complexities. Although spatial compressive sensing (CS) has been recently considered for a pulsed-waveform MIMO radar with sparse random arrays, such methods for the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar remain largely unexplored. Traditional multiple input multiple output radars, which transmit orthogonal coded waveforms, suffer from range-azimuth resolution trade-off. In this work, we adopt a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) approach that breaks this conflict. We combine narrow individual bandwidth for high azimuth resolution and large overall total bandwidth for high range resolution. We process all channels jointly to overcome the FDMA range resolution limitation to a single bandwidth, and address range-azimuth coupling using a random array configuration.

By utilizing a low-rank nature of the reflections of the layered material structure and sparse nature of the defects, we propose a method based on rank minimization and sparse recovery. To improve the accuracy in the recovery of low-rank and sparse components, we propose a non-convex approach based on the iterati…
Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) and massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) are two key enabling technologies to meet the diverse and stringent requirements of the 5G use cases. In a C-RAN system with massive MIMO, fronthaul is often the bottleneck due to its finite capacity and transmit precoding is moved to the remote radio head to reduce the capacity requirements on fronthaul. For such a system, we optimize the power allocated to the users to maximize first the weighted sum rate and then the energy efficiency (EE) while explicitly incorporating the capacity constraints on fronthaul…
Uplink channel estimation is a crucial component for the performance of cellular massive MIMO systems. However, when the number of user equipments (UEs) grows, the sharing of the available resources causes interference between UEs in neighboring cells. Minimum mean squared error (MMSE) channel estimators have been proposed to mitigate this interference, but these require estimates of the channel covariance matrices. Therefore, a new channel covariance matrix estimator for low-rank channel covariance matrices is presented in this paper, using a generalized eigenvalue decomposition (GEVD) of two…
