We present a compressive sensing based defect detection by multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless radar. Here, defects are inside a layered material structure, therefore, due to reflections from the surface of the layered material structure the defect detection is challenging. By utilizing a low-rank nature of the reflections of the layered material structure and sparse nature of the defects, we propose a method based on rank minimization and sparse recovery. To improve the accuracy in the recovery of low-rank and sparse components, we propose a non-convex approach based on the iteratively reweighted nuclear norm and iteratively reweighted $\ell_1-$norm algorithm. Our numerical results show that the proposed method is able to demix and recover the signalling responses of the defects and layered structure successfully from substantially reduced number of observations. Further, the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art clutter reduction approaches

Recently channel state information (CSI) measurements from commercial multi input multi output (MIMO) WiFi systems have been ubiquitously used for different wireless sensing applications. However, the phase of the CSI realizations is usually distorted severely by phase errors due to the hardware impairments, which significantly reduce the sensing performance. In this paper, we directly utilize the modeling of the phase distortions caused by the hardware impairments and propose an adaptive CSI estimation approach based on Kalman filter (KF) with maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation that consid…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems exploit spatial diversity to facilitate multi-user communications with high spectral efficiency by beamforming. As MIMO systems utilize multiple antennas and radio frequency (RF) chains, they are typically costly to implement and consume high power. A common method to reduce the cost of MIMO receivers is utilizing less RF chains than antennas by employing hybrid analog/digital beamforming (HBF). However, the added analog circuitry involves active components whose consumed power may surpass that saved in RF chain reduction. An additional method to r…

Utilizing techniques in compressive sensing, optimization and deep learning, we propose two model-driven approaches, based on the standard aut…
For a sub-connected hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver with $K$ subarrays and $N$ antennas, there exists a challenging problem of how to rapidly remove phase ambiguity in only single time-slot. First, a DOA estimator of maximizing received power (Max-RP) is proposed to find the maximum value of $K$-subarray output powers, where each subarray is in charge of one sector, and the center angle of the sector corresponding to the maximum output is the estimated true DOA. To make an enhancement on precision, Max-RP plus quadratic interpolation (Max-RP-QI) method is designed. In the…

In this paper, a data-driven approach is proposed to jointly design the common sensing (measurement) matrix and jointly support recovery method for complex signals, using a standard deep auto-encoder for real numbers. The auto-encoder in the proposed approach includes an encoder that mimics the noisy linear measurement process for jointly sparse signals with a common sensing matrix, and a decoder that approximately performs jointly sparse support recovery based on the empirical covariance matrix of noisy linear measurements. Massive MIMO wireless FDD systems are often confronted by the challenge to efficiently obtain downlink channel state information (CSI). Previous works have demonstrated the potential in CSI encoding and recovery by take advantage of uplink/downlink reciprocity between their CSI magnitudes. However, such a framework separately encodes CSI phase and magnitude. To improve CSI encoding, we propose a learning-based framework based on limited CSI feedback and magnitude-aided information. Moving beyond previous works, our proposed framework with a modified loss function enables end-to-end learning to…
This letter develops an optimum beamforming method for downlink transmissions in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which employ a massive number of distributed access points to provide concurrent services to multiple users. The optimum design is formulated as a max-min problem that maximizes the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of all users. It is shown analytically that the problem is quasi-concave, and the optimum solution is obtained with the second-order cone programming. In this paper, we provide an analytical framework for full-duplex (FD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular networks with low resolution analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters (ADCs and DACs). Matched filters are employed at the FD base stations (BSs) at the transmit and receive sides. For both reverse and forward links, our contributions are (1) derivations of the signal-to-quantization-plus-interference-and-noise ratio (SQINR) for general and special cases; (2) derivations of spectral efficiency for asymptotic cases as well as for power scaling laws; and (3) qua…
This paper addresses the problem of downlink channel estimation in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The existing methods usually exploit hidden sparsity under a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) basis to estimate the cdownlink channel. However, there are at least two shortcomings of these DFT-based methods: 1) they are applicable to uniform linear arrays (ULAs) only, since the DFT basis requires a special structure of ULAs, and 2) they always suffer from a performance loss due to the leakage of energy over some DFT bins. To deal with the …
In this letter, we consider the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar waveform design in the presence of signal-dependent clutters and additive white Gaussian noise. By imposing the constant modulus constraint (CMC) and waveform similarity constraint (SC), the signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) maximization problem is non-convex and NP-hard in general, which can be transformed into a sequence of convex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) subproblems. Aiming at solving each subproblem efficiently, we propose a low-complexity method termed Accelerated Gradient Proj…

This paper proposes compressed domain signal processing (CSP) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar, a MIMO radar approach that achieves substantial sample complexity reduction by exploiting the idea of CSP. CSP MIMO radar involves two levels of data compression followed by target detection at the compressed domain. First, compressive sensing is applied at the receive antennas, followed by a Capon beamformer which is designed to suppress clutter. Exploiting the sparse nature of the beamformer output, a second compression is applied to the filtered data. Target detection is subsequently c…
Soft demodulation of received symbols into bit log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) is at the very heart of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) detection. However, the optimal maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector is complicated and infeasible to be used in a practical system. In this paper, we propose a soft MIMO detection algorithm based on marginal posterior probability statistics (MPPS). With the help of optimal transport theory and order statistics theory, we transform the posteriori probability distribution of each layer into a Gaussian distribution. In our system the source-relay channels are massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ones and the relay-destination channels are massive multiple-input single-output (MISO) ones. Large random matrix theory (RMT) is used to derive a deterministic equivalent of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at each user in massive MIMO amplify-forward and decode-forward (M-MIMO-ADF) re…
In this letter, we consider optimal hybrid beamforming design to minimize the transmission power under individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints in a multiuser massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system. This results in a challenging non-convex optimization problem. We consider two cases. In the case where the number of users is smaller than or equal to that of radio frequency (RF) chains, we propose a low-complexity method to obtain a globally optimal solution and show that it achieves the same transmission power as an optimal fully-digital beamformer. Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has the potential to enable robust communications in highly-mobile scenarios. Estimating the channels for OTFS systems, however, is associated with high pilot signaling overhead that scales with the maximum delay and Doppler spreads. This becomes particularly challenging for massive MIMO systems where the overhead also scales with the number of antennas. An important observation however is that the delay, Doppler, and angle of departure/arrival information are directly related to the distance, velocity, and direction information of the mobile u…
This paper derives a novel pilot-aided phase and channel estimation algorithm for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with phase noise and quasi-static channel fading. Our novel approach allows, for the first time, carrier phase estimation and recovery to be performed before full channel estimation. This in turn enables the channel estimation to be calculated using the whole frame, significantly improving its accuracy. The proposed algorithm is a sequential combination of several linear algorithms, which greatly reduces the computational complexity. Moreover, we also derive, for the …
Channel state information (CSI) reporting is important for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitters to achieve high capacity and energy efficiency in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode. CSI reporting for massive MIMO systems could consume excessive bandwidth and degrade spectrum efficiency. However, existing works focusing on CSI compression have shown little on the efficient encoding of CSI report. In this paper, we propose an efficient DL-based compressio…
Channel acquisition is one of the main challenges for the deployment of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided communication systems. This is because an RIS has a large number of reflective elements, which are passive devices with no active transmitting/receiving abilities. In this paper, we study the channel estimation problem for the RIS aided multi-user millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system. Specifically, we propose a novel channel estimation protocol for the above system to estimate the cascaded channels, which are the products of the channels from the bas…
Accurate downlink channel state information (CSI) is vital to achieving high spectrum efficiency in massive MIMO systems. Recent years have witnessed growing interest in reduced cost radar systems operating with low power. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar technology is known to achieve high performance sensing by probing with multiple orthogonal waveforms. However, implementing a low cost low power MIMO radar is challenging. One of the reasons for this difficulty stems from the increased cost and power consumption required by analog-to-digital convertors (ADCs) in acquiring the multiple waveforms at the radar receiver. In this work we study reduced cost MIMO radar receivers restricted to operate with l…
Low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are promising for reducing energy consumption and costs of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with many antennas. We propose low-resolution multiuser MIMO receivers where the signals are simultaneously processed by 1-bit ADCs and a comparator network, which can be interpreted as additional virtual channels with binary outputs. We distinguish the proposed comparator networks in fully and partially connected. For such receivers, we develop the low-resolution aware linear minimum mean-squared error (LRA-LMMSE) channel estimat…

We present a cognitive prototype that demonstrates a colocated, frequency-division-multiplexed, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar which implements both temporal and spatial sub-Nyquist sampling. The signal is sampled and recovered via the Xampling framework. Cognition is due to the fact that the transmitter adapts its signal spectrum by emitting only those subbands that the receiver samples and processes. Real-time experiments demonstrate sub-Nyquist MIMO recovery of target scenes with 87.5% spatio-temporal bandwidth reduction and signal-to-noise-ratio of -10 dB.
Grant-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) usually employs non-orthogonal pilots for joint user detection and channel estimation. However, existing methods are too complex for massive grant-free access in massive MIMO. This letter proposes pilot detection reference signal (PDRS) to greatly reduce the complexity. In PDRS scheme, no iteration is required. Direct weight estimation is also proposed to calculate combining weights without channel estimation. After combining, PDRS recovery errors are used to decide the pilot activity. The simulation results show that the proposed grant-free sch…
This letter studies the pilot contamination (PC) problem for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks with coexisting terrestrial users and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Due to the strong line-of-sight (LoS) air-to-ground channels between UAVs and base stations (BSs), UAVs usually cause a more severe PC issue as compared to the traditional terrestrial users. To mitigate the PC caused by UAVs, we propose a low-complexity distributed scheme by exploiting the full-dimensional beamforming of massive MIMO BSs and the angle-dependent LoS channels between them and high-altitude UAVs.…
In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, it is crucial of utilizing the available channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter for precoding to improve the performance of frequency division duplex (FDD) networks. This paper studies the detection performance of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) multifunction radio frequency (MFRF) system, which simultaneously supports radar, communication, and jamming. We show that the detection performance of the MIMO MFRF system improves as the transmit signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) increases. To analyze the achievable SINR of the system, we formulate an SINR maximization problem under the communication and jamming functionality constraint as well as a transmit energy constraint. We derive a closed-form solution of this optimization problem for …
The premise of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is based around coherent transmission and detection. Majority of the vast literature on massive MIMO presents performance evaluations over simplified statistical propagation models. We consider channel estimation for an uplink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system where the base station (BS) uses an array with low-resolution (1-2 bit) analog-to-digital converters and a spatial Sigma-Delta ($ΣΔ$) architecture to shape the quantization noise away from users in some angular sector. We develop a linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE) channel estimator based on the Bussgang decomposition that reformulates the nonlinear quantizer model using an equivalent linear model plus quantization noise. In colocated compressive sensing MIMO radar, the measurement matrix is specified by antenna placement. To guarantee an acceptable recovery performance, this measurement matrix should satisfy certain properties, e.g., a small coherence. Prior work in the literature often employs randomized placement algorithms which optimize the prior distribution of antenna locations. The performance of these algorithms is suboptimal, as they can be easily enhanced via expurgation. In this paper, we suggest an iterative antenna placement algorithm which determines the antenna locations deterministically. The p…
In this letter, we consider hybrid beamforming for millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). We design the transmit beam of a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) base station (BS), aiming at approaching the objective radar beam pattern, subject to the constraints of the signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of communication users and total transmission power of the DFRC BS. To provide additional degree of freedom for the beam design problem, we introduce a phase vector to the objective beam pattern and propose an alternating minimization method…
Using precoding to suppress multi-user interference is a well-known technique to improve spectra efficiency in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems, and the pursuit of high performance and low complexity precoding method has been the focus in the last decade. The traditional algorithms including the zero-forcing (ZF) algorithm and the weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) algorithm failed to achieve a satisfactory trade-off between complexity and performance. In this paper, leveraging on the power of deep learning, we propose a low-complexity precoding design framewo…
Obtaining channel covariance knowledge is of great importance in various Multiple-Input Multiple-Output MIMO communication applications, including channel estimation and covariance-based user grouping. In a massive MIMO system, covariance estimation proves to be challenging due to the large number of antennas ($M\gg 1$) employed in the base station and hence, a high signal dimension. In this case, the number of pilot transmissions $N$ becomes comparable to the number of antennas and standard estimators, such as the sample covariance, yield a poor estimate of the true covariance and are undesir…
Quantized channel state information (CSI) plays a critical role in precoding design which helps reap the merits of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. In order to reduce the overhead of CSI feedback, we propose a deep learning based CSI quantization method by developing a joint convolutional residual network (JCResNet) which benefits MIMO channel feature extraction and recovery from the perspective of bit-level quantization performance. Experiments show that our proposed method substantially improves the performance.
