A dynamic and flexible generalized spatial modulation (GSM) framework is proposed for massive MIMO systems. Our framework is leveraged on the utilization of machine learning methods for GSM in order to improve the error performance in presence of correlated channels and channel estimation errors. Both decision tree and multi-layer perceptrons approaches are adopted for the GSM transmitter. Simulation results indicate that in presence of real-life impairments machine learning based approaches provide a superior performance when compared to the classical Euclidean distance based approach. The observations are validated through measurement results over the designed $16\times 4$ MIMO test-bed using software defined radio nodes.
Energy efficiency (EE) optimization of millimeter wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is emerging as an important challenge for the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems. However, the power of radio frequency (RF) chains increases sharply due to the high carrier frequency in mm-Wave massive MIMO systems. To overcome this issue, a new energy efficiency optimization solution is proposed based on the structure of the generalized spatial modulation (GSM) and sub-connected hybrid precoding (HP). Moreover, the computation power of mm-Wave massive MIMO sy…

Hybrid beamforming is widely recognized as an important technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) is further introduced to improve the spectrum efficiency. However, most of the existing works on beamforming assume the perfect channel state information (CSI), which is unrealistic in practical systems. In this paper, joint optimization of downlink pilot training, channel estimation, CSI feedback, and hybrid beamforming is considered in GSM aided frequency division duplexing (FDD) mmWave MIMO systems. With the help o…
We propose a novel scheme for downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, called dual-layered transmit-receive generalized spatial modulation (DL-TR-GSM). The proposed scheme is based on the concept of dual-layered transmission (DLT) which uses two receive antenna power levels instead of receive antenna activation/inactivation to transmit data in the receive spatial domain. Hence, in order to minimize the bit error rate (BER) for DL-TR-GSM, the optimal ratio between the two power levels is determined. To further characterize DL-TR-GSM, we fully derive the computational co…
We explore the feasibility of Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication through vibrations over human skin. Using off-the-shelf motors and piezo transducers as vibration transmitters and receivers, respectively, we build a 2x2 MIMO testbed to collect and analyze vibration signals from real subjects. Our analysis reveals that there exist multiple independent vibration channels between a pair of transmitter and receiver, confirming the feasibility of MIMO. Unfortunately, the slow ramping of mechanical motors and rapidly changing skin channels make it impractical for conventional channe…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a critical technology for future fifth-generation (5G) systems. Reduced pilot contamination (PC) enhanced system performance, and reduced inter-cell interference and improved channel estimation. However, because the pilot sequence transmitted by users in a single cell to neighboring cells is not orthogonal, massive MIMO systems are still constrained. We propose channel evaluation using orthogonal pilot reuse sequences (PRS) and zero forced (ZF) pre-coding techniques to eliminate channel quality in end users with poor channel quality based on cha…
This paper presents a novel massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission in beam domain for optical wireless communications. The optical base station equipped with massive optical transmitters communicates with a number of user terminals (UTs) through a transmit lens. Focusing on LED transmitters, we analyze light refraction of the lens and establish a channel model for optical massive MIMO transmissions. For a large number of LEDs, channel vectors of different UTs become asymptotically orthogonal. We investigate the maximum ratio transmission and regularized zero-forcing precodi…
Future wireless communication systems are expected to explore spectral bands typically used by radar systems, in order to overcome spectrum congestion of traditional communication bands. Since in many applications radar and communication share the same platform, spectrum sharing can be facilitated by joint design as dual function radar-communications system. In this paper, we propose a joint transmit beamforming model for a dual-function multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar and multiuser MIMO communication transmitter sharing the spectrum and an antenna array. The proposed dual-function…
This paper studies the transmit antenna selection in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system over wiretap channel. The transmitter, equipped with a large-scale antenna array whose size is much larger than that of the eavesdropper and legitimate receiver, selects a subset of antennas to transmit messages. An branch-and-bound (BAB) search based algorithm for antenna selection in independent and identical Rayleigh flat fading channel is proposed to maximize the secrecy capacity between the transmitter and the legitimate receiver when the transmit power is equally allocated into the a…
The time division multiple access (TDMA) technique has been applied in automotive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. However, it suffers from the transmit energy loss, and as a result the parameter estimation performance degradation when the number of transmit elements increases. To tackle these problem, a transmit beamspace (TB) Doppler division multiple access (DDMA) approach is proposed. First, a phase modulation matrix with empty Doppler spectrum is introduced. By exploiting the empty Doppler spectrum, a test function based on sequential detection is developed to mitigate the Dop…
Blind enumeration of the number of transmit antennas and blind identification of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) schemes are two pivotal steps in MIMO signal identification for both military and commercial applications. Conventional approaches treat them as two independent problems, namely the source number enumeration and the presence detection of space-time redundancy, respectively. In this paper, we develop a joint blind identification algorithm to determine the number of transmit antennas and MIMO scheme simultaneously. By restructuring the received signals, we derive three subspace-…
In this paper, we study joint antenna activity detection, channel estimation, and multiuser detection for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with general spatial modulation (GSM). We first establish a double-sparsity massive MIMO model by considering the channel sparsity of the massive MIMO channel and the signal sparsity of GSM. Based on the double-sparsity model, we formulate a blind detection problem. To solve the blind detection problem, we develop message-passing based blind channel-and-signal estimation (BCSE) algorithm. The BCSE algorithm basically follows the affine …
Designing unimodular waveforms with a desired beampattern, spectral occupancy and orthogonality level is of vital importance in the next generation Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar systems. Motivated by this fact, in this paper, we propose a framework for shaping the beampattern in MIMO radar systems under the constraints simultaneously ensuring unimodularity, desired spectral occupancy and orthogonality of the designed waveform. In this manner, the proposed framework is the most comprehensive approach for MIMO radar waveform design focusing on beampattern shaping. The problem formu…
High-mobility wireless communications have been receiving a lot attentions. In this paper, we consider the highmobility uplink transmission from a high-speed terminal (HST) to a base station (BS). We propose two transmit diversity schemes for high-mobility massive communications with angle domain Doppler compensation. In the first scheme, we propose the idea of block-wise angle domain Doppler compensation, such that the uplink equivalent channel would exhibit the feature of nearly perfect independent block fading. The signal space diversity encoding technique is then exploited to achieve trans…
In this paper, we consider the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter which simultaneously functions as a MIMO radar and a base station for downlink multiuser communications. In addition to a power constraint, we require the covariance of the transmit waveform be equal to a given optimal covariance for MIMO radar, to guarantee the radar performance. With this constraint, we formulate and solve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem for multiuser transmit beamforming via convex optimization. Considering that the interference cannot be complet…
Dual-function radar-communications (DFRC) systems implement radar and communication functionalities on a single platform. Jointly designing these subsystems can lead to substantial gains in performance as well as size, cost, and power consumption. In this paper, we propose a DFRC system, which utilizes generalized spatial modulation (GSM) to realize coexisting radar and communications waveforms. Our proposed GSM-based scheme, referred to as spatial modulation based communication-radar (SpaCoR) system, allocates antenna elements among the subsystems based on the transmitted message, thus achiev…
This paper investigates the downlink (DL) transmit design for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems, where only the slow-varying statistical channel state information is exploited at the transmitter. The channel model for the DL massive MIMO LEO satellite system is established, in which both the satellite and the user terminals (UTs) are equipped with uniform planar arrays. Observing the rank-one property of the channel matrices, we show that the single-stream precoding for each UT is the optimal choice that maximizes the ergodic su…
Analog Beamsteering (ABS) has emerged as a low complexity, power efficient solution for MillimeterWave (mmWave) massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems. Moreover, driven by the low spatial correlation between the User Terminals (UTs) with high number of transmit antennas (massive MIMO) at the Base Station (BS), ABS can be used to support Multi User (MU) MIMO scenarios instead of digital or Hybrid Beamforming (HBF). However, we show in this paper, that even with high number of transmit antennas, the HBF can achieve better Spectral Efficiency (SE) compared to the MU ABS even in pur…
The array design problem of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in a line-of-sight (LoS) transmit environment is examined. As uniform array configurations at the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) are optimal at specific transmit distances only, they lead to reduced spectral efficiency over a range of transmit distances. To that end, the joint design of nonuniform Tx and Rx arrays towards maximizing the minimum capacity of a LoS MIMO system across a range of transmit distances is investigated in this paper. By introducing convex relaxation, the joint Tx and Rx array design is cast as…
Sparse array design aided by emerging fast sensor switching technologies can lower the overall system overhead by reducing the number of expensive transceiver chains. In this paper, we examine the active sparse array design enabling the maximum signal to interference plus noise ratio (MaxSINR) beamforming at the MIMO radar receiver. The proposed approach entails an entwined design, i.e., jointly selecting the optimum transmit and receive sensor locations for accomplishing MaxSINR receive beamforming. Specifically, we consider a co-located multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar platform wi…
Space-time coded massive (STCM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system provides superior bit error rate (BER) performance compared with the conventional space-time coding and massive MIMO techniques. The transmitter of the STCM-MIMO system consists of a large antenna array. In a practical system, the self-interference created by the signals transmitted by the elements of this antenna array, known as mutual coupling (MC), degrades the performance of the system. The MC effect is pronounced in communication systems with a large antenna array. On the other hand, increasing the number of tran…
The ability of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar systems to adapt waveforms across antennas allows flexibility in the transmit beampattern design. In cognitive radar, a popular cost function is to minimize the deviation against an idealized beampattern (which is arrived at with knowledge of the environment). The optimization of the transmit beampattern becomes particularly challenging in the presence of practical constraints on the transmit waveform. One of the hardest of such constraints is the non-convex constant modulus constraint, which has been the subject of much recent work. I…
Cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) is expected to provide reliable wireless services for a large number of user equipments (UEs) using access points (APs) distributed across a wide area. When the UEs are battery-powered, uplink energy efficiency (EE) becomes an important performance metric for CF-mMIMO systems. Therefore, if the "target" spectral efficiency (SE) is met, it is important to optimize the uplink EE when setting the transmit powers of the UEs. Also, such transmit power control (TPC) method must be tested on channel data from real-world measurements to prove its effectiveness. In thi…
The use of multiple antennas in a transmit and receive antenna array for MIMO wireless communication allows the spatial degrees of freedom in rich scattering environments to be exploited. However, for line-of-sight (LOS) MIMO channels with uniform linear arrays (ULAs) at the transmitter and receiver, the antenna separations at the transmit and receive array need to be optimized to maximize the spatial degrees of freedom and the channel capacity. In this paper, we first revisit the derivation of the optimum antenna separation at the transmit and receive ULAs in a LOS MIMO system, and provide th…

In this dual-hop and amplify-and-forward relaying based network, since the first and second hops are types of single-user and multi-user systems, respectively, the optimal JTRAS and suboptimal majority-based JTRAS schemes are employed in the first and second hops. The theoretical OP analysis is carried out over Nakagami-m fading channels in the cases of perfec…
This paper studies the secrecy performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channels, also termed as multiple-input multiple-output multiple-eavesdropper (MIMOME) channels, under transmit antenna selection (TAS) and BPSK/QPSK modulations. In the main channel between the transmitter and the legitimate receiver, a single transmit antenna is selected to maximizes the instantaneous Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) at the receiver. At the receiver and the eavesdropper, selection combination (SC) is utilized. By assuming Rayleigh flat fading, we first derive the closed-form approximated e…
In this paper, we consider the transmit and receive antenna array gain of massive MIMO systems. In particular, we look at their dependence on the number of antennas in the array, and the antenna spacing for uniform linear and uniform circular arrays. It is known that the transmit array gain saturates at a certain antenna spacing, but the receive array gain had not been considered. With our physically consistent analysis based on the Multiport Communication Theory, we show that the receive array gain does not saturate, but that there is a peak at a certain antenna spacing when there is no decou…
In this paper, we present a unique word (UW)-based channel estimation approach for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems under doubly dispersive channels, which is applied to orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) with space time coding (STC). The OTFS modulation has been recently proposed as a robust technique under time varying channels due to its property of spreading the data symbols over time and frequency. Yet another relevant aspect is the employment of multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver. Therefore, we consider an STC MIMO system with cyclic delay diversity at the…
The problem of joint design of transmit waveforms and receive filters is desirable in many application scenarios of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems. In this paper, the joint design problem is investigated under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance metric, in which case the problem is formulated to maximize the SINR at the receiver side subject to some practical transmit waveform constraints. A numerical algorithm is proposed for problem resolution based on the manifold optimization method, which has been shown to be powerful and flexible to address…
In this paper, we investigate the blind channel estimation problem for MIMO systems under Rayleigh fading channel. Conventional MIMO communication techniques require transmitting a considerable amount of training symbols as pilots in each data block to obtain the channel state information (CSI) such that the transmitted signals can be successfully recovered. However, the pilot overhead and contamination become a bottleneck for the practical application of MIMO systems with the increase of the number of antennas. To overcome this obstacle, we propose a blind channel estimation framework, where …
In this work, we study the performance of a single relay Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) cooperative communication system based on Decode and Forward (DF) relaying protocol for two strategies using transmit antenna selection at the source. The first strategy uses one antenna between the relay and the destination, and the second strategy uses Space Time Block Coding (STBC). All channels follow the Rayleigh fading distribution. We derive the expression and Upper Bound for Symbol Error Rate (SER) for M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and the diversity order for both strategies. The analytic…
In order to improve the accuracy and resolution for transmit beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, a search-free direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method based on tensor decomposition and polynomial rooting is proposed. In the proposed method, a 3-order tensor is firstly designed to model the received signal of MIMO radar on the basis of the multi-linear property. Then, the factor matrix with target DOA information is obtained by the tensor decomposition via alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm, and subsequently the DOA estimation is converted into the independent min…
Precoding is a method of compensating the channel at the transmitter. This work presents a novel method of data detection in turbo coded single user massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems using precoding. We show via computer simulations that, when precoding is used, re-transmitting the data does not result in significant reduction in bit-error-rate (BER), thus increasing the spectral efficiency, compared to the case without precoding. Moreover, increasing the number of transmit and receive antennas results in improved BER.
This paper proposes a communication model for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems based on large intelligent surfaces (LIS), where the LIS is modeled as a collection of tightly packed antenna elements. The LIS system is first represented in a circuital way, obtaining expressions for the radiated and received powers, as well as for the coupling between the distinct elements. Then, this circuital model is used to characterize the channel in a line-of-sight propagation scenario, rendering the basis for the analysis and design of MIMO systems. Due to the particular properties o…
In this paper power allocation in a cellular network, which transmitter uses massive multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) system was studied. An energy efficiency optimization problem under both maximum transmit power and quality of service (QoS) constraints was considered. To solve this problem under cooperation between users and their base station (BS), ene…
Conventional hybrid analog-digital architectures for millimeter-wave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems suffer from poor scalability and high implementational costs. The former is caused by the high power loss in the analog network, and the latter is due to the fact that classic MIMO transmission techniques require power amplifiers with high back-offs. This paper proposes a novel hybrid analog-digital architecture which addresses both of these challenges. This architecture implements the analog front-end via a passive reflect- or transmit-array to resolve the scalability iss…
We analyze the diversity gain for a distributed antenna subarray employing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We show that the diversity gain depends on the number of transmitted data streams, the number of remote antenna units, and the number of propagation paths between RAUs. Furthermore, we show that by using bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB), one can achieve the maximum diversity gain in a distributed antenna subarray system. The assumption in both scenarios is that the numbe…
We study a backscatter communication protocol over a AWGN channel, where a transmitter illuminates a tag with a directional multi-antenna. The tag performs load modulation on the signal while hiding its physical presence from a warden. We show that, if the transmitter-to-tag channel is inaccessible to the warden, then $Θ(n)$ reliable and covert bits can be transmitted over $n$ channel usages. This overcomes the square-root law for covert communication. This paper provides the first evidence for practical implementation of covert backscatter communication, with potential applications in IoT sec…
Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system transmission is a popular diversity technique to improve the reliability of a communication system where transmitter, communication channel and receiver are the important elements. Data transmission reliability can be ensured when the bit error rate is very low. Normally, multiple antenna elements are used at both the transmitting and receiving section in MIMO Systems. MIMO system utilizes antenna diversity or spatial diversity coding system in wireless channels because wireless channels severely suffer from multipath fading in which the transmitted…

An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with transmit antenna selection (TAS) using orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) scheme is proposed in this paper. This system combines TAS and IRS with hybrid analog-digital beamforming (HBF) for 60 GHz mmWave communications in order to exploit the benefits of TAS, OSTBC, analog beamforming (ABF), and transmit digital precoding techniques. The proposed system, however, benefits from the transmit diversity gain of OSTBC scheme as well as from the signal-to-noise r…

We address the problem of tensor decomposition in application to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for transmit beamspace (TB) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. A general 4-order tensor model that enables computationally efficient DOA estimation is designed. Whereas other tensor decomposition-based methods treat all factor matrices as arbitrary, the essence of the proposed DOA estimation method is to fully exploit the Vandermonde structure of the factor matrices to take advantage of the shift-invariance between and within different subarrays. Specifically, the received signal of…
