Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are a main enabler of the excessive throughput requirements in 5G and future generation wireless networks as they can serve many users simultaneously with high spectral and energy efficiency. To achieve this, massive MIMO systems require accurate and timely channel state information (CSI), which is acquired by a training process that involves pilot transmission, CSI estimation and feedback. This training process incurs a training overhead, which scales with the number of antennas, users and subcarriers. Reducing this training overhead in massive MIMO systems has been a major topic of research since the emergence of the concept. Recently, deep learning (DL)-based approaches for massive MIMO training have been proposed and showed significant improvements compared to traditional techniques. This paper provides an overview of how neural networks (NNs) can be used in the training process of massive MIMO systems to improve the performance by reducing the CSI acquisition overhead and to reduce complexity.
Massive MIMO has been regarded as one of the key technologies for 5G wireless networks, as it can significantly improve both the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. The availability of high-dimensional channel side information (CSI) is critical for its promised performance gains, but the overhead of acquiring CSI may potentially deplete the available radio resources. Fortunately, it has recently been discovered that harnessing various sparsity structures in massive MIMO channels can lead to significant overhead reduction, and thus improve the system performance. This paper presents and …
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems require downlink channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS) to better utilize the available spatial diversity and multiplexing gains. However, in a frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO system, CSI feedback overhead degrades the overall spectral efficiency. Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based CSI feedback compression schemes has received a lot of attention recently due to significant improvements in compression efficiency; however, they still require reliable feedback links to convey the compressed CSI information …
We propose adjustable phase shift pilots (APSPs) for channel acquisition in wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to reduce the pilot overhead. Based on a physically motivated channel model, we first establish a relationship between channel space-frequency correlations and the channel power angle-delay spectrum in the massive antenna array regime, which reveals the channel sparsity in massive MIMO-OFDM. With this channel model, we then investigate channel acquisition, including channel estimation and channel p…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems use antenna arrays with a large number of antenna elements to serve many different users simultaneously. The large number of antennas in the system makes, however, the channel state information (CSI) acquisition strategy design critical and particularly challenging. Interestingly, in the context of massive MIMO systems, channels exhibit a large degree of spatial correlation which results in strongly rank-deficient spatial covariance matrices at the base station (BS). With the final objective of analyzing the benefits of covariance-aided upl…
In order to unlock the full advantages of massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) in the downlink, channel state information (CSI) is required at the base station (BS) to optimize the beamforming matrices. In frequency division duplex (FDD) systems, full channel reciprocity does not hold, and CSI acquisition generally requires downlink pilot transmission followed by uplink feedback. Prior work proposed the end-to-end design of pilot transmission, feedback, and CSI estimation via deep learning. In this work, we introduce an enhanced end-to-end design that leverages partial uplink-downlink…
This article aims to reduce huge pilot overhead when estimating the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) relayed wireless channel. Motivated by the compelling grasp of deep learning in tackling nonlinear mapping problems, the proposed approach only activates a part of RIS elements and utilizes the corresponding cascaded channel estimate to predict another part. Through a synthetic deep neural network (DNN), the direct channel and active cascaded channel are first estimated sequentially, followed by the channel prediction for the inactive RIS elements. A three-stage training strategy is dev…

Multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems are known to be hindered by dimensionality loss due to channel state information (CSI) acquisition overhead. In this paper, we investigate user-scheduling in MU-MIMO systems on account of CSI acquisition overhead, where a base station dynamically acquires user channels to avoid choking the system with CSI overhead. The genie-aided optimization problem (GAP) is first formulated to maximize the Lyapunov-drift every scheduling step, incorporating user queue information and taking channel fluctuations into consideration. The scheduling sch…

Channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is essential for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems, but conventional solutions involve overwhelming overhead both for downlink channel training and uplink channel feedback. In this letter, we propose a joint CSIT acquisition scheme to reduce the overhead. Particularly, unlike conventional schemes where each user individually estimates its own channel and then feed it back to the base station (BS), we propose that all scheduled users directly feed back the pilot observation to the BS, and then joint CSIT recovery can be r…
Forward channel state information (CSI) often plays a vital role in scheduling and capacity-approaching transmission optimization for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is widely recognized as a promising technology for future 5G wireless communication systems. To achieve the theoretical performance gains in massive MIMO systems, accurate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is crucial. Due to the overwhelming pilot signaling and channel feedback overhead, however, conventional downlink channel estimation and uplink channel feedback schemes might not be suitable for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems. In addition, these two topics are usually separately considered in the literat…
CSI feedback is an important problem of Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology because the feedback overhead is proportional to the number of sub-channels and the number of antennas, both of which scale with the size of the Massive MIMO system. Deep learning-based CSI feedback methods have been widely adopted recently owing to their superior performance. Despite the success, current approaches have not fully exploited the relationship between the characteristics of CSI data and the deep learning framework. Transmitter channel state information (CSIT) is indispensable for the spectral efficiency gains offered by massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In a frequency-division-duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO system, CSIT is typically acquired through downlink channel estimation and user feedback, but as the number of antennas increases, the overhead for CSI training and feedback per user grows, leading to a decrease in spectral efficiency. In this paper, we show that, using uplink pilots in FDD, the downlink sum spectral efficiency gain with perfect downlink CSIT is achievable when the …

Conventional MU-MIMO techniques, e.g. Linear Zero-Forced Beamforming (LZFB), require sufficiently accurate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in order to realize spectral efficient transmission (degree of freedom gains). In practical settings, however, CSIT accuracy can be limited by a number of issues including CSI estimation, CSI feedback delay between user terminals to base stations, and the time/frequency coherence of the channel. The latter aspects of CSIT-feedback delay and channel-dynamics can lead to significant challenges in the deployment of efficient MU-MIMO systems…
Channel feedback is essential in frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Unfortunately, previous work on multiuser MIMO has shown that the codebook size for channel feedback should scale exponentially with the number of base station (BS) antennas, which is greatly increased in massive MIMO systems. To reduce the codebook size and feedback overhead, we propose an angle-of-departure (AoD)-adaptive subspace codebook for channel feedback in FDD massive MIMO systems. Our key insight is to leverage the observation that path AoDs vary more slowly than…
Full-rate (FR) and full-diversity (FD) are attractive features in MIMO systems. We refer to systems which achieve both FR and FD simultaneously as FRFD systems. Non-orthogonal STBCs can achieve FRFD without feedback, but their ML decoding complexities are high. V-BLAST without precoding achieves FR but not FD. FRFD can be achieved in V-BLAST through precoding given full channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). However, with limited feedback precoding, V-BLAST achieves FD, but with some rate loss. Our contribution in this paper is two-fold: $i)$ we propose a limited feedback (LFB) p…
