Exchange-coupled structures consisting of ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic layers become technologically more and more important. We show experimentally the occurrence of completely reversible, hysteresis-free minor loops of [Co(0.2 nm)/Ni(0.4 nm)/Pt(0.6 nm)]$_N$ multilayers exchange-coupled to a 20 nm thick ferrimagnetic Tb$_{28}$Co$_{14}$Fe$_{58}$ layer, acting as hard magnetic pinning layer. Furthermore, we present detailed theoretical investigations by means of micromagnetic simulations and most important a purely analytical derivation for the condition of the occurrence of full reversibility in magnetization reversal. Hysteresis-free loops always occur if a domain wall is formed during the reversal of the ferromagnetic layer and generates an intrinsic hard-axis bias field that overcomes the magnetic anisotropy field of the ferromagnetic layer. The derived condition further reveals that the magnetic anisotropy and the bulk exchange of both layers, as well as the exchange coupling strength and the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer play an important role for its reversibility.
A Metropolis Monte Carlo simulation is used in this paper to investigate the temperature dependency of the hysteresis loops of a spin-1 bilayer with square monolayers. In this system, the atoms interact ferromagnetically in-plane, with either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interplane interactions. The effects of four distinct combinations of the Hamiltonian parameters on the hysteresis behaviours are discussed in detail. The geometry of the hysteresis loops changes depending on how the exchange couplings are combined. With ferromagnetic interlayer coupling, only the central hysteresis loop…
Understanding the origin of hysteresis in the channel resistance from top gated graphene transistors is important for transistor applications. Capacitance - voltage measurements across the gate oxide on top gated bilayer graphene show hysteresis with a charging and discharging time constant of ~100 μs. However, the measured capacitance across the graphene channel does not show any hysteresis, but shows an abrupt jump at a high channel voltage due to the emergence of an order, indicating that the origin of hysteresis between gate and source is due to charge traps present in the gate oxide and g…
Magnetic junction is considered which consists of two ferromagnetic metal layers, a thin nonmagnetic spacer in between, and nonmagnetic lead. Theory is developed of a magnetization reversal due to spin injection in the junction. Spin-polarized current is perpendicular to the interfaces. One of the ferromagnetic layers has pinned spins and the other has free spins. The current breaks spin equilibrium in the free spin layer due to spin injection or extraction. The nonequilibrium spins interact with the lattice magnetic moment via the effective s-d exchange field, which is current dependent. Abov…
Cumulative growth of successive minor hysteresis loops in Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy was studied in the context of time dependent magnetization reversal dynamics. We show that in disordered ferromagnets, where magnetization reversal involves nucleation, domains' expansion and annihilation, differences between the time dependencies of these processes are responsible for accumulation of nuclei for rapid domain expansion, for the asymmetry of forward and backward magnetization reversals and for the respective cumulative growth of hysteresis loops. Loops stop changing and beco…
This paper describes a model for magnetization reversal in polycrystalline Ferromagnetic/Antiferromagnetic exchange biased bilayers. We assume that the exchange energy can be expanded into cosine power series. We show that it is possible to fit experimental asymmetric shape of hysteresis loops in exchange biased bilayer for any direction of the applied field. The hysteresis asymmetry is discussed in terms of energy considerations. An angle beta is introduced to quantify the easy axis dispersion of AF grains.
A modified effective field model was developed to quantitatively interpret the angular dependent magnetization reversal processes in exchange biased Fe/IrMn bilayers. Several kinds of multi-step loops with distinct magnetization reversal routes were observed for the samples measured at various field orientations. Two types of angular dependent switching fields are observed and their transitions are investigated, which are found to be driven by both Fe and IrMn layer thicknesses. Our modified effective field model can nicely describe all the switching field behaviors including the critical effe…
The properties of antiferromagnetic ferromagnetic bilayer have been studied using self-consistent mean-field approximation for Heisenberg Hamiltonian. The perpendicular exchange coupling has been revealed in a bilayer with a compensated interface. For a uniform antiferromagnetic film a symmetrical hysteresis loop has been calculated, because the transverse instability develops within the antiferromagnetic film at certain critical value of external magnetic field. On the other hand, shifted hysteresis loop with a finite exchange bias field has been obtained for a non-uniform antiferromagnetic f…
In this study, the magnetic reversal process of exchange-coupled bilayer systems, consisting of a ferrimagnetic TbFeCo alloy layer and a ferromagnetic [Co/Ni/Pt]N multilayer, was investigated. In particular, minor loop studies, probing solely the reversal characteristics of the softer ferromagnetic layer, reveal two distinct reversal mechanisms, which depend strongly on the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer. For thick layers, irreversible switching of the macroscopic minor loop is observed. The underlying microscopic origin of this reversal process was studied in detail by high-resolution m…
We performed a detailed study of the training effect in exchange biased CoO/Co bilayers. High-resolution measurements of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) are consistent with nucleation of magnetic domains in the antiferromagnetic CoO layer during the first magnetization reversal. This accounts for the enhanced spin rotation observed in the ferromagnetic Co layer for all subsequent reversals. Surprisingly, the AMR measurements as well as magnetization measurements reveal that it is possible to partially reinduce the untrained state by performing a hysteresis measurement with an in plane …
We have studied the magnetization reversal process in FM/AFM bilayer structures through of spin dynamics simulation. It has been observed that the magnetization behavior is different at each branch of the hysteresis loop as well as the exchange-bias behavior. On the descending branch a sudden change of the magnetization is observed while on the ascending branch is observed a bland change of the magnetization. The occurrence of the asymmetry in the hysteresis loop and the variation in the exchange-bias is due to anisotropy which is introduced only in the coupling between ferromagnetic (FM) and …
The first order reversal curve (FORC) method is a magnetometry based technique used to capture nanoscale magnetic phase separation and interactions with macroscopic measurements using minor hysteresis loop analysis. This makes the FORC technique a powerful tool in the analysis of complex systems which cannot be effectively probed using localized techniques. However, recovering quantitative details about the identified phases which can be compared to traditionally measured metrics remains an enigmatic challenge. We demonstrate a technique to reconstruct phase-resolved magnetic hysteresis loops …
We have investigated exchange bias effects in bilayers composed by the antiferromagnetic o-YMnO$_3$ and ferromagnetic Co thin film by means of SQUID magnetometry, magnetoresistance, anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect. The magnetization and magnetotransport properties show pronounced asymmetries in the field and magnetization axes of the field hysteresis loops. Both exchange bias parameters, the exchange bias field $H_{E}(T)$ as well as the magnetization shift $M_E(T)$, vanish around the Néel temperature $T_N \simeq 45$ K. We show that the magnetization shift $M_E(T)$ is also …
The interface between organic semiconductor [OSC]/ferromagnetic [FM] material can exhibit ferromagnetism due to their orbital hybridization. Charge/spin transfer may occur from FM to OSC layer leading to the formation of `spinterface' i.e. the interface exhibiting a finite magnetic moment. In this work, the magnetic properties of Co/C$_{60}$ bilayer thin film have been studied to probe the interface between Co and C$_{60}$ layer. Polarized neutron reflectivity [PNR] measurement indicates that the thickness and moment of the spinterface are $\sim$ 2 $\pm$ 0.18 nm and 0.8 $\pm$ 0.2 $μ_B$/cage, r…
We present domain-specific magnetization reversals extracted from soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering measurement on a permalloy square ring array. The extracted domain-specific hysteresis loops reveal that the magnetization of the domain parallel to the field is strongly pinned, while those of other domains rotate continuously. In comparison with the micromagnetic simulation, the hysteresis loop on the pinned domain indicates a possibility of the coexistence of the square rings with the vortex and onion states.
Microwave assisted magnetization reversal are studied in the bulk bilayer exchange coupled system. We investigate the nonlinear magnetization reversal dynamics in a perpendicular exchange spring media using Landau-Lifshitz equation. In the limit of the infinite thickness of the system, the propagation field leads the reversal of the system. The reduction of the switching field and the magnetization profile in the extended system are studied numerically. The possibility to study the dynamics analytically is discussed and an approximation where two P-modes are coupled by an interaction field is …
The Monte Carlo method in the canonical ensemble is used to investigate magnetization reversal in amorphous transition metal - rare earth multilayers. Our study is based on a model containing diluted clusters which exhibit an effective uniaxial anisotropy in competition with random magnetic anisotropy in the matrix. We simulate hysteresis loops for an abrupt profile and a diffuse one obtained from atom probe tomography analyses. Our results evidence that the atom probe tomography profile favors perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in agreement with magnetic measurements. Moreover, the hysteresis …
The methods of the probability theory have been used in order to build up a new model of hysteresis. It turns out that the reversal points of the control parameter (e. g., the magnetic field) are Markov points which determine the stochastic evolution of the process. It has been shown that the branches of the hysteresis loop are converging to fixed limit curves when the number of cyclic back-and-forth variations of the control parameter between two consecutive reversal points is large enough. This convergence to limit curves gives a clear explanation of the accommodation process. The accommodat…

The asymmetric magnetization reversal is studied in a single exchange-biased microbar of 1.5 x 13 micrometer with anisotropic magnetoresistance and magnetic force microscopy. The particle has a moment of less than 10^-9 emu and is not accessible with standard magnetometry. The asymmetric hysteresis loop of CoFe/CrMnPt shows a repeatable rotation process, followed by an irreversible nucleation process that is marked by jumps in the magnetoresistance. The induced unidirectional anisotropy enhances the rotation process in one branch of the hysteresis loop, followed by a sped up nucleation process…
A simple scheme to extract the magnetization reversals of characteristic magnetic domains on nanofabricated periodic arrays from soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (SXRMS) data is presented. The SXRMS peak intensities from a permalloy square ring array were measured with field cycling using circularly polarized soft x-rays at the Ni L$_3$ absorption edge. Various SXRMS hysteresis loops observed at different diffraction orders enabled the determination of the magnetization reversal of each magnetic domain using a simple linear algebra. The extracted domain-specific hysteresis loops reveal …
Nanostructured Fe dots were prepared on antiferromagnetic FeF2 thin films and investigated by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). We studied the influence of dot sizes on the magnetic hysteresis and compared the result with both continuous thin film bilayers and nanostructured Fe/FeF2 pillars. Hysteresis loops were measured at temperatures below and above (10 and 90 K, respectively) the Neel temperature of the antiferromagnet. A vortex state is found for dots of 300 nm diameter, where the exchange bias field is reduced compared to larger dot system and the continuous bilayer. Micromagnetic sim…
We observe a thermally induced spontaneous magnetization reversal of epitaxial ferromagnet/antiferromagnet heterostructures under a constant applied magnetic field. Unlike any other magnetic system, the magnetization spontaneously reverses, aligning anti-parallel to an applied field with decreasing temperature. We show that this unusual phenomenon is caused by the interfacial antiferromagnetic coupling overcoming the Zeeman energy of the ferromagnet. A significant temperature hysteresis exists, whose height and width can be tuned by the field applied during thermal cycling. The hysteresis orig…
We have performed first order reversal curve measurements of the temperature-driven metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$ thin films, which enable quantitative analysis of the hysteresis behavior. An unexpected tail-like feature in the contour plot of the reversal curve distribution indicates the existence of metallic domains, even at temperatures below the closing of the hysteresis. These domains interact with the surrounding medium and change the reversal path relative to a path from a \emph{fully} insulating state. With this in mind, and assuming that such interaction persist through the ent…
We have carried out detailed experimental studies of the exchange bias effect of a series of CoO/Co(111) textured bilayers with different Co layer thickness, using the magneto-optical Kerr effect, SQUID magnetometry, polarized neutron reflectivity, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. All samples exhibit a pronounced asymmetry of the magnetic hysteresis at the first magnetization reversal as compared to the second reversal. Polarized neutron reflectivity measurements show that the first reversal occurs via nucleation and domain wall motion, while the second reversal is characterized…
In the admixed Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2 system, magnetic moments of Nd and Ho occupying the same crystallographic site are antiferromagnetically coupled and the chosen stoichiometry displays a magnetic compensation behavior (Tcomp of about 24 K) in all orientations. In the vicinity of Tcomp, the conduction electron polarization (CEP) assumes the role of a soft ferromagnet exchange coupled to a pseudo-antiferromagnet comprising Nd/Ho moments, resulting in an asymmetry in the hysteretic (M-H) loop, i.e., the notion of an exchange bias field (Hexch). Across Tcomp, the CEP contribution reverses sign, and i…
Anti-ferromagnetic materials have the possibility to offer ultra fast, high data density spintronic devices. A significant challenge is the reliable detection of the state of the antiferromagnet, which can be achieved using exchange bias. Here we develop an atomistic spin model of the athermal training effect, a well known phenomenon in exchange biased systems where the bias is significantly reduced after the first hysteresis cycle. We find that the setting process in granular thin films relies on the presence of interfacial mixing between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers. We sys…
We investigate the quasi-static magnetic behavior of ensembles of non-interacting ferromagnetic nanoparticles consisting of MnP nanoclusters embedded in GaP(001) epilayers grown at 600, 650 and 700°C. We use a phenomenological model, in which surface effects are included, to reproduce the experimental hysteresis curves measured as a function of temperature (120-260 K) and direction of the applied field. The slope of the hysteresis curve during magnetization reversal is determined by the MnP nanoclusters size distribution, which is a function of the growth temperature. Our results show that the…
Positive exchange bias has been observed in the Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/Ir$_{20}$Mn$_{80}$ bilayer system via soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering. After field cooling of the system through the blocking temperature of the antiferromagnet, an initial conventional negative exchange bias is removed after training i. e. successive magnetization reversals, resulting in a positive exchange bias for a temperature range down to 30 K below the blocking temperature (450 K). This new manifestation of magnetic training is discussed in terms of metastable magnetic disorder at the magnetically frustrated inte…
Electronic states at domain walls in bilayer graphene are studied by analyzing their four and two band continuum models, by performing numerical calculations on the lattice, and by using quantum geometric arguments. The continuum theories explain the distinct electronic properties of boundary modes localized near domain walls formed by interlayer electric field reversal, by interlayer stacking reversal, and by simultaneous reversal of both quantities. Boundary mode properties are related to topological transitions and gap closures which occur in the bulk Hamiltonian parameter space. The import…
A simple lattice model that allows hysteresis loops with exchange bias to be reproduced is presented. The model is based on the metastable Random Field Ising model, driven by an external field, with synchronous local relaxation dynamics. The key ingredient of the model is that a certain fraction $f$ of the exchange constants between neighbouring spins is enhanced to a very large value $J_E$. The model allows the dependence of several properties of the hysteresis loops to be analyzed as a function of different parameters and we have carried out an analysis of the first-order reversal curves.

Magnetic properties of 2D systems of magnetic nanoobjects (2D regular lattices of the magnetic nanoparticles or magnetic nanostripes) are considered. The analytical calculation of the hysteresis curve of the system with interaction between nanoobjects is provided. It is shown that during the magnetization reversal system passes through a number of metastable states. The kinetic problem of the magnetization reversal was solved for three models. The following results have been obtained. 1) For 1D system (T=0) with the long-range interaction with the energy proportional to $r^{-p}$, the staircase…
We demonstrate robust interface strain-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in atomically flat ferrimagnetic insulator Tm3Fe5O12 films grown with pulsed laser deposition on substituted-Gd3Ga5O12 substrate which maximizes the tensile strain at the interface. In bilayers consisting of Pt and TIG, we observe large squared Hall hysteresis loops over a wide range of thicknesses of Pt at room temperature. When a thin Cu layer is inserted between Pt and TIG, the Hall hysteresis magnitude decays but stays finite as the thickness of Cu increases up to 5 nm. However, if the Cu layer is placed atop …
Oriented Strontium Ferrite films with the c axis orientation were deposited with varying oxygen partial pressure on Al2O3(0001) substrate using PLD technique. The angle dependent magnetic hysteresis, remanent coercivity and temperature dependent coercivity had been employed to understand the magnetization reversal of these films. It was found that the Strontium Ferrite thin film grown at lower (higher) oxygen partial pressure shows Stoner-Wohlfarth type (Kondorsky like) reversal. The relative importance of pinning and nucleation processes during magnetization reversal is used to explain the ty…
We predict that a novel bias-voltage assisted magnetization reversal process will occur in Mn doped II-VI semiconductor quantum wells or heterojunctions with carrier induced ferromagnetism. The effect is due to strong exchange-coupling induced subband mixing that leads to electrically tunable hysteresis loops. Our model calculations are based on the mean-field theory of carrier induced ferromagnetism in Mn-doped quantum wells and on a semi-phenomenological description of the host II-VI semiconductor valence bands.
We present a theoretical study of in-plane magnetization reversal for vicinal ultrathin films using a one-dimensional micromagnetic model with nearest-neighbor exchange, four-fold anisotropy at all sites, and two-fold anisotropy at step edges. A detailed "phase diagram" is presented that catalogs the possible shapes of hysteresis loops and reversal mechanisms as a function of step anisotropy strength and vicinal terrace length. The steps generically nucleate magnetization reversal and pin the motion of domain walls. No sharp transition separates the cases of reversal by coherent rotation and r…
We investigate the effects of the competition between exchange ($J$) and dipolar ($D$) interactions on the magnetization reversal mechanisms of ferromagnetic nanotubes. Using first atomistic Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for a model with Heisenberg spins on a cylindrical surface, we compute hysteresis loops for a wide range of the $γ=D/J$ parameter, characterizing the reversal behavior in terms of the cylindrical magnetization components and the vorticity parameter along the tube length. For $γ$'s close to the value for which helical (H) states are stable at zero applied field, we show that the…
We have shown that polarized neutron reflectometry can determine in a model-free way not only the mean magnetization of a ferromagnetic thin film at any point of a hysteresis cycle, but also the mean square dispersion of the magnetization vectors of its lateral domains. This technique is applied to elucidate the mechanism of the magnetization reversal of an exchange-biased Co/CoO bilayer. The reversal process above the blocking temperature is governed by uniaxial domain switching, while below the blocking temperature the reversal of magnetization for the trained sample takes place with substan…
We investigated with XMCD-PEEM magnetic imaging the magnetization reversal processes of Néel caps inside Bloch walls in self-assembled, micron-sized Fe(110) dots with flux-closure magnetic state. In most cases the magnetic-dependent processes are symmetric in field, as expected. However, some dots show pronounced asymmetric behaviors. Micromagnetic simulations suggest that the geometrical features (and their asymmetry) of the dots strongly affect the switching mechanism of the Néel caps.
Using first principles methods, we investigate topological phase transitions as a function of exchange field in a Bi(111) bilayer. Evaluation of the spin Chern number for different magnitudes of the exchange field reveals that when the time reversal symmetry is broken by a small exchange field, the system enters the time-reversal broken topological insulator phase, introduced by Yang {\it et al.} in Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 066602 (2011). After a metallic phase in the intermediate region, the quantum anomalous Hall phase with non-zero Chern number emerges at a sufficiently large exchange field. W…
We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of a model of a single maghemite ferrimagnetic nanoparticle with the aim to clarify the role played by the increased anisotropy at the surface and by the shape (spherical or elliptical) of the particle on the magnetization processes at low temperatures. The formation of hedgehog-like structures for high enough surface anisotropy is responsible for a change in the reversal mechanism of the particles.
We present a simple and effective instrument for simultaneous real-time imaging and hysteresis of the anisotropic magnetic domain dynamics in thin films using the Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE). We furthermore illustrate that magnetic imaging allows a more accurate interpretation of the magnetization reversal processes than the conventional hysteresis characterization. In particular, we present a case where the onset of a double-step reversal observed in imaging remains invisible in the spatially integrated hysteresis loops. When complemented by precise tuning of the external magnetic fiel…
The potential of exchange spring bilayers and graded media is reviewed. An analytical model for the optimization of graded media gives an optimal value of the magnetic polarization of Js = 0.8 T. The optimum design allows for thermally stable grains with grain diameters in the order of 3.3 nm, which supports ultra high density up to 5 to 10 Tbit per inch2. The switching field distribution is significantly reduced in bilayer media and graded media compared to single phase media. For the graded media the switching field distribution is reduced by about a factor of two. For bilayer media the mini…
For ferromagnet/antiferromagnet bilayers, rotation of the easy axis has been \textit{for the first time} observed during measurements of training effect and the recovery of exchange bias using FeNi/FeMn system. These salient phenomena strongly suggest irreversible motion of antiferromagnet spins during subsequent measurements of hysteresis loops. It is found that the rotation of the easy axis can partly account for the training effect and the recovery of the exchange bias.
In this work, IrMn$_{3}$/insulating-Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ exchange-biased bilayers are studied. The behavior of the net magnetic moment $Δm_{AFM}$ in the antiferromagnet is directly probed by anomalous and planar Hall effects, and anisotropic magnetoresistance. The $Δm_{AFM}$ is proved to come from the interfacial uncompensated magnetic moment. We demonstrate that the exchange bias and rotational hysteresis are induced by the irreversible switching of the $Δm_{AFM}$. In the training effect, the $Δm_{AFM}$ changes continuously. This work highlights the fundamental role of the $Δm_{AFM}$ in th…
We report the effect of dilute alloying of the anion sublattice with S on the in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and magnetization reversal process in Ga1-xMnxP as measured by both ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. At T=5K, raising the S concentration increases the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy between in-plane <011> directions while decreasing the magnitude of the (negative) cubic anisotropy field. Simulation of the SQUID magnetometry indicates that the energy required for the nucleation and growth of domain walls decreases w…
Strong ferromagnetic interlayer exchange couplings $J$ in perpendicularly magnetized systems are becoming increasingly desirable for applications. We study whether ferromagnetic interlayer exchange couplings can be measured by a combination of broadband ferromagnetic resonance methods and magnetometry hysteresis loops. For this we model the switching and the eigenexcitations in bilayer systems comprising a soft layer coupled to a thicker harder layer that possesses higher perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. For large $J >0$ the switching fields are essentially independent of $J$ but the frequen…
