We demonstrate robust interface strain-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in atomically flat ferrimagnetic insulator Tm3Fe5O12 films grown with pulsed laser deposition on substituted-Gd3Ga5O12 substrate which maximizes the tensile strain at the interface. In bilayers consisting of Pt and TIG, we observe large squared Hall hysteresis loops over a wide range of thicknesses of Pt at room temperature. When a thin Cu layer is inserted between Pt and TIG, the Hall hysteresis magnitude decays but stays finite as the thickness of Cu increases up to 5 nm. However, if the Cu layer is placed atop Pt instead, the Hall hysteresis magnitude is consistently larger than when the Cu layer with the same thickness is inserted in between for all Cu thicknesses. These results suggest that both the proximity-induced ferromagnetism and spin current contribute to the anomalous Hall effect.
Mechanical strain can modify the structural and electronic properties of methylammonium lead iodide MAPbI3. The consequences of ferroelastic hysteresis, which involves the retention of structural memory upon cycles of deformation, in polycrystalline thin films of MAPbI3 are reported. Repeatedly bent films of MAPbI3 on flexible polyimide substrates were examined using Grazing Incidence Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (GIWAXS) to quantitatively characterize the strain state, populations, and minimum sizes of twin domains. Approximate locations for the coercive stress and saturation on the ferroelast…
We model the magnetization of quasi two-dimensional systems with easy perpendicular (z-)axis anisotropy upon change of external magnetic field along z. The model is derived from the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for magnetization evolution, written in closed form in terms of the z component of the magnetization only. The model includes--in addition to the external field--magnetic exchange, dipolar interactions and structural disorder. The phase diagram in the disorder/interaction strength plane is presented, and the different qualitative regimes are analyzed. The results compare very well w…
Three-dimensional (3D) simulations of ferroelectric hysteresis and butterfly loops have been carried out based on solving the time dependent Ginsburg-Landau equations by using a finite volume method. The influence of externally mechanical loadings with a tensile strain and a compressive strain on the hysteresis and butterfly loops has been studied numerically. The 3D ferroelectric domain formation and its evolution have also been presented in the paper. The simulation results successfully reveal the macroscopically nonlinear response to the applied stresses and electric field.
An exactly solvable phase-field theory of dislocation dynamics, strain hardening and hysteresis in ductile single crystals is developed. The theory accounts for: an arbitrary number and arrangement of dislocation lines over a slip plane; the long-range elastic interactions between dislocation lines; the core structure of the dislocations resulting from a piecewise quadratic Peierls potential; the interaction between the dislocations and an applied resolved shear stress field; and the irreversible interactions with short-range obstacles and lattice friction, resulting in hardening, path depende…
Stripe domains are studied in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy films nanostructured with a periodic thickness modulation that induces the lateral modulation of both stripe periods and inplane magnetization. The resulting system is the 2D equivalent of a strained superlattice with properties controlled by interfacial misfit strain within the magnetic stripe structure and shape anisotropy. This allows us to observe, experimentally for the first time, the continuous structural transformation of a grain boundary in this 2D magnetic crystal in the whole angular range. The magnetization reversal pr…
We report on experiments aimed at comparing the hysteretic response of a Cu-Zn-Al single crystal undergoing a martensitic transition under strain-driven and stress-driven conditions. Strain-driven experiments were performed using a conventional tensile machine while a special device was designed to perform stress-driven experiments. Significant differences in the hysteresis loops were found. The strain-driven curves show re-entrant behaviour (yield point) which is not observed in the stress-driven case. The dissipated energy in the stress-driven curves is larger than in the strain-driven ones.…
We report on the exchange coupling and magnetic properties of a strained ultrathin CoO/PtFe double-layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The cobalt oxide growth by reactive molecular beam epitaxy on a Pt-terminated PtFe/Pt(001) surface gives rise to an hexagonal surface and a monoclinic distorted CoO 3nm film at room temperature. This distorted ultrathin CoO layer couples with the PtFe(001) layer establishing a robust perpendicular exchange bias shift. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy provides a full description of the spin orientations in the CoO/PtFe doublelayer. The exchange bias …
Very high magnetic anisotropies have been theoretically predicted for strained Fe-Co(-X) and indeed several experiments on epitaxial thin films seemed to confirm strain induced anisotropy enhancement. This study presents a critical analysis of the different contributions to perpendicular anisotropy: volume, interface and surface anisotropies. Tracing these contributions, thickness series of single layer films as well as multilayers with Au-Cu buffers/interlayers of different lattice parameters have been prepared. The analysis of their magnetic anisotropy reveals a negligible influence of the l…
We show tunable strain-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) over a wide range of thicknesses in epitaxial ferrimagnetic insulator Eu3Fe5O12 (EuIG) and Tb3Fe5O12 (TbIG) thin films grown by pulsed-laser deposition on Gd3Ga5O12 with (001) and (111) orientations, respectively. The PMA field is determined by measuring the induced anomalous Hall loops in Pt deposited on the garnet films. Due to positive magnetostriction constants, compressive in-plane strain induces a PMA field as large as 32.9 kOe for 4 nm thick EuIG and 66.7 kOe for 5 nm thick TbIG at 300 K, and relaxes extremely slowly…
Charge transport in Rubrene single crystals under uniaxial mechanical strain is systematically investigated in the crystal's two in-plane transport directions both under tensile and compressive strain applied parallel or perpendicular to the current direction. The density of trap states remains unchanged. The field-effect mobility as a benchmark figures for intermolecular transport is found to increase with compressive strain and vice versa with a magnitude of -1.5 cm2/Vs per percent of strain independently of tranport direction. A very remarkable result is the mobility change when the crystal…
The properties of antiferromagnetic ferromagnetic bilayer have been studied using self-consistent mean-field approximation for Heisenberg Hamiltonian. The perpendicular exchange coupling has been revealed in a bilayer with a compensated interface. For a uniform antiferromagnetic film a symmetrical hysteresis loop has been calculated, because the transverse instability develops within the antiferromagnetic film at certain critical value of external magnetic field. On the other hand, shifted hysteresis loop with a finite exchange bias field has been obtained for a non-uniform antiferromagnetic f…
The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy K$_e$$_f$$_f$, magnetization reversal, and field-driven domain wall velocity in the creep regime are modified in Pt/Co(0.85-1.0 nm)/Pt thin films by strain applied via piezoelectric transducers. K$_e$$_f$$_f$, measured by the extraordinary Hall effect, is reduced by 10 kJ/m$^3$ by tensile strain out-of-plane ε$_z$ = 9 x 10-4, independently of the film thickness, indicating a dominant volume contribution to the magnetostriction. The same strain reduces the coercive field by 2-4 Oe, and increases the domain wall velocity measured by wide-field Kerr microscop…
The demand of fast and power efficient spintronics devices with flexibility requires additional energy for magnetization manipulation. Stress/and strain have shown their potentials for tuning magnetic properties to the desired level. Here, we report a systematic study for the effect of both tensile and compressive stresses on the magnetic anisotropy (MA). Further the effect of stress on the domain structure and magnetization relaxation mechanism in a perpendicularly magnetized Co/Pt film has been studied. It is observed that a minimal in-plane tensile strain has increased the coercivity of the…
A new characteristic is observed in the training effect of perpendicular exchange bias. For Pt/Co/Pt/IrMn multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, the magnetization reversal process is accompanied by pinned domain wall motion and the asymmetry of hysteresis loop is always equal to zero during subsequent measurements. It is interesting to find that the exchange field decreases greatly as a function of the cycling number while the coercivity almost does not change. It is clearly demonstrated that the training effect of perpendicular exchange bias strongly depends on the magnetization …
Strained Fe-Co films have recently been demonstrated to exhibit a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) and thus to be of potential interest as magnetic storage material. Here, we show by means of density-functional (DF) calculations, that chemical order can remarkably enhance the MCA. We also investigate the effect of relaxation perpendicular to the applied strain and evaluate the strain energy as a function of Co concentration and substrate lattice parameter. On this basis, favourable preparation routes for films with a large perpendicular anisotropy are suggested.
We present a tight-binding investigation of strained bilayer graphene within linear elasticity theory, focusing on the different environments experienced by the A and B carbon atoms of the different sublattices. We find that the inequivalence of the A and B atoms is enhanced by the application of perpendicular strain $ε_{zz}$, which provides a physical mechanism for opening a band gap, most effectively obtained when pulling the two graphene layers apart. In addition, perpendicular strain introduces electron-hole asymmetry and can result in linear electronic dispersion near the K-point. When ap…
The interaction between strain and spin has received intensive attention in the scientific community due to its abundant physical phenomena and huge technological impact. Until now, there is no experimental report on ultra-high frequency magnetic resonance through the strain-spin coupling for any technologically relevant perpendicular magnetic material. Here we report the experimental detection of the acoustic strain waves that have a response time on the order of 10 picoseconds in perpendicular magnetic [Co/Pd]n multilayers via a femtosecond laser pulse excitation. Through direct measurements…
Multifunctional materials composed of ultrathin magnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy combined with ferroelectric substrates represent a new approach toward low power, fast, high density spintronics. Here we demonstrate Co/Ni multilayered films with tunable saturation magnetization and perpendicular anisotropy grown directly on ferroelectric PZT [Pb(Zr_xTi_1-x)O_3] substrate plates. Electric fields up to +/- 2 MV/m expand the PZT by 0.1% and generate at least 0.02% in-plane compression in the Co/Ni multilayered film. Modifying the strain with a voltage can reduce the coercive f…
We have prepared the dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) InMnAs with different Mn concentrations by ion implantation and pulsed laser melting. The Curie temperature of the In1-xMnxAs epilayer depends on the Mn concentration x, reaching 82 K for x=0.105. The substitution of Mn ions at the Indium sites induces a compressive strain perpendicular to the InMnAs layer and a tensile strain along the in-plane direction. This gives rise to a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which is often needed for the demonstration of electrical control of magnetization and for spin-transfer-torque induced ma…
We use broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction to investigate the fundamental origin of perpendicular anisotropy in Co90Fe10/Ni multilayers. By careful evaluation of the spectroscopic g-factor, we determine the orbital moment along the out-of-plane and in-plane directions. For the multilayers, we find a direct relationship between the orbital moment asymmetry and the perpendicular anisotropy, consistent with the theory of Bruno [P.Bruno, Phys. Rev. B, 39, 865 (1989)]. A systematic x-ray diffraction study revealed the presence of a trigonal strain as high as 0.7 % i…
Layered ferromagnets with high coercivity have special applications in nanoscale memory elements in electronic circuits, such as data storage. Therefore, searching for new hard ferromagnets and effectively tuning or enhancing the coercivity are the hottest topics in layered magnets today. Here, we report a strain tunability of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets VI3 using magnetic circular dichroism measurements. For an unstrained flake, the M-H curve shows a rectangular-shaped hysteresis loop with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a large coercivity (up t…
Ferromagnetic insulating La$_2$CoMnO$_{6-ε}$ (LCMO) epitaxial thin films grown on top of SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates presents a strong magnetic anisotropy favoring the out of plane orientation of the magnetization with a strong anisotropy field ($\sim 70$ kOe for film thickness of about 15 nm) and with a coercive field of about 10 kOe. The anisotropy can be tuned by modifying the oxygen content of the film which indirectly has two effects on the unit cell: i) change of the orientation of the LCMO crystallographic axis over the substrate (from c in-plane to c out-of-plane) and ii) shrinkage of t…
In this study, we investigated the effect of spacer and buffer layers on the blocking temperature TB of the perpendicular exchange bias of thin Cr2O3 films, and revealed a high TB of 260 K for 20-nm-thick Cr2O3 thin films. By inserting a Ru spacer layer between the Cr2O3 and Co films and changing the spacer thickness, we controlled the magnitude of the exchange bias and TB. By comparing the TB values of the 20-nm-thick Cr2O3 films on Pt and alpha-Fe2O3 buffers, we investigated the lattice strain effect on the TB. We show that higher TB value can be obtained using an alpha-Fe2O3 buffer, which i…
We study the magnetic properties of nanoscale magnetic films with large perpendicular anisotropy comparing polarization microscopy measurements on Co_28Pt_72 alloy samples based on the magneto-optical Kerr effect with Monte Carlo simulations of a corresponding micromagnetic model. We focus on the understanding of the dynamics especially the temperature and field dependence of the magnetisation reversal process. The experimental and simulational results for hysteresis, the reversal mechanism, domain configurations during the reversal, and the time dependence of the magnetisation are in very goo…
We present a synthesis/processing method for fabricating ferrimagnetic insulator (Bi-doped yttrium iron garnet) thin films with tunable magnetic anisotropy. Since the desired magnetic properties rely on controllable thickness and successful doping, we pay attention to the entire synthesis/processing procedure (nanopowder synthesis, nanocrystalline target preparation and pulsed laser deposition (PLD)). Atomically flat films were deposited by PLD on (111)-orientated yttrium aluminum garnet. We show a significant enhancement of perpendicular anisotropy in the films, caused by strain-induced aniso…
The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of single crystalline La1-x-yPryCaxMnO3 (x=0.42, y=0.40) thin films (~140 nm) deposited on (110) oriented LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates exhibit a crossover from the high temperature antiferromagnetic-charge ordered insulator (AFM-COI) phase (T>TN) to strain glass (T<Tg). At intermediate temperatures (Tg<T<TN) dynamical liquid having prominent thermal-magneto-resistive hysteresis dominates in the cooling cycle, while in the warming cycle it is preceded by ferromagnetic metal (FMM) phase. Magnetic field required to drive AFM-COI to FMM phase transition…
We explore strain-modulated helimagnetism in highly crystalline MnP nanorod films grown on Si(100) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The strained MnP film exhibits a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (PM-FM) phase transition at TC ~ 279 K, and the FM to helical phase transition at TN ~ 110 K. The value of TN is greater than TN ~ 47 K for the MnP single crystal, indicating strong strain-modulated helimagnetic states in the MnP nanorod film. The presence of significant thermal hysteresis in the helical phase indicates coexistence of competing magnetic interactions, leading to the first-order …
Strong ferromagnetic interlayer exchange couplings $J$ in perpendicularly magnetized systems are becoming increasingly desirable for applications. We study whether ferromagnetic interlayer exchange couplings can be measured by a combination of broadband ferromagnetic resonance methods and magnetometry hysteresis loops. For this we model the switching and the eigenexcitations in bilayer systems comprising a soft layer coupled to a thicker harder layer that possesses higher perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. For large $J >0$ the switching fields are essentially independent of $J$ but the frequen…
Magnetic junction is considered which consists of two ferromagnetic metal layers, a thin nonmagnetic spacer in between, and nonmagnetic lead. Theory is developed of a magnetization reversal due to spin injection in the junction. Spin-polarized current is perpendicular to the interfaces. One of the ferromagnetic layers has pinned spins and the other has free spins. The current breaks spin equilibrium in the free spin layer due to spin injection or extraction. The nonequilibrium spins interact with the lattice magnetic moment via the effective s-d exchange field, which is current dependent. Abov…
We investigate MCA of CoFe(011) thin films as a function of strength of strain and film thickness has been studied. It is elucidated that perpendicular magnetocystalline anisotropy (MCA) energy (EMCA) is getting stronger with compressed xy-plane lattice constant while in-plane MCA is become an easy-axis by tensile strain on xy-plane. The reason of the EMCA behaviors can be explained by features of electronic structures.
According to the classical theory of elasticity, a plate subjected to a bending moment always deflects with symmetric tensile and compressive strains in its two sides, without overall deformation perpendicular to the bending moment. Here, we find by ab initio simulations that significant overall tensile strain can be induced by pure bending in a wide range of two-dimensional crystals perpendicular to the bending moment, just like an accordion being bent to open. This accordion effect is raised by asymmetric response of chemical bonds and electron density to the bending curvature, with the tens…
Ferromagnetic (FM) layers separated by nonmagnetic metallic spacer layers can exhibit Ruderman Kittel Kasuya Yosida (RKKY) coupling which may lead to a stable synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) phase. In this article we study magnetization reversal in [Co/Pt] layers by varying the number of bilayer stacks (Pt/Co) as well as thickness of Ir space layer tIr on rigid Si(100) and flexible polyimide substrates. The samples with tIr = 1.0 nm shows a FM coupling whereas samples with tIr = 1.5 nm shows an AFM coupling between the FM layers. At tIr = 2.0 nm, it shows a bow-tie shaped hysteresis loop ind…

We show that Py, a commonly-used soft ferromagnetic material with weak anisotropy, can become perpendicularly-magnetized while depositing on Ta buffer layer with Hf or Zr insertion layers (ILs) and MgO capping layer. By using two different approaches, namely harmonic voltage measurement and hysteresis loop shift measurement, the dampinglike spin-orbit torque (DL-SOT) efficiencies from Ta/IL/Py/IL/MgO magnetic heterostructures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are characterized. We find that though Ta has a significant spin Hall effect, the DL-SOT efficiencies are small in systems with the…
We present experimental control of the magnetic anisotropy in a gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG) thin film from in-plane to perpendicular anisotropy by simply changing the sample temperature. The magnetic hysteresis loops obtained by SQUID magnetometry measurements unambiguously reveal a change of the magnetically easy axis from out-of-plane to in-plane depending on the sample temperature. Additionally, we confirm these findings by the use of temperature dependent broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy (FMR). In order to determine the effective magnetization, we utilize the intrinsic adva…
We report measurements of the in-plane magnetoelastic coupling in ultra-thin Ta|CoFeB|MgO layers as a function of uniaxial strain, conducted using a four-point bending apparatus. For annealed samples, we observe a strong dependence on the thickness of the CoFeB layer in the range 1.3-2.0 nm, which can be modeled as arising from a combination of effective surface and volume contributions to the magnetoelastic coupling. We point out that if similar thickness dependence exists for magnetoelastic coupling in response to biaxial strain, then the standard Néel model for the magnetic anisotropy energ…
The effect of high tensile strain and low dimensionality on the magnetic and electronic properties of CaMnO$_3$ ultrathin films, epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates, are experimentally studied and theoretically analyzed. By means of ab initio calculations, we find that, both, the high strain produced by the substrate and the presence of the free surface contribute to the stabilization of an in-plane ferromagnetic coupling, giving rise to a non-zero net magnetic moment in the ultrathin films. Coupled with this change in the magnetic order we find an insulator-metal transition triggered by…
Controlling magnetic anisotropy by orbital magnetic moments related to interfacial strains has considerable potential for the development of future devices using spins and orbitals. For the fundamental physics, the relationship between strain and orbital magnetic moment is still unknown, because there are few tools to probe changes of orbital magnetic moment. In this study, we developed an electric-field- (E)-induced X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (EXMCD) technique to apply E to a ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate. We reversibly tuned the interfacial lattice constants of Ni/Cu multilayers on B…
Single-crystal europium iron garnet (EuIG) thin films epitaxially strain-grown on gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG)(100) substrates using off-axis sputtering have strain-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). By varying the sputtering conditions, we have tuned the europium/iron (Eu/Fe) composition ratios in the films to tailor the film strains. The films exhibited an extremely smooth, particle-free surface with roughness as low as 0.1 nm as observed using atomic force microscopy. High-resolution x-ray diffraction analysis and reciprocal space maps showed in-plane epitaxial film growth,…
Large thermal changes driven by a magnetic field have been proposed for environmentally friendly energy efficient refrigeration, but only a few materials which suffer hysteresis show these giant magnetocaloric effects. Here we create giant and reversible extrinsic magnetocaloric effects in epitaxial films of the ferromagnetic manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 using strain mediated feedback from BaTiO3 substrates near a first-order structural phase transition. Our findings should inspire the discovery of giant magnetocaloric effects in a wide range of magnetic materials, and the parallel development of …
We investigate the element-specific spin and orbital states and their roles on magnetic anisotropy in the Co-ferrite (Co$_x$Fe$_{3-x}$O$_{4+δ}$ (001)) thin films which exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The origin of PMA in the low $x$ region ($x$ $<$ 1) can be mainly explained by the large perpendicular orbital magnetic moments in the Co$^{2+}$ (3$d^7$) states detected by X-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroisms (XMCD/XMLD). The XMLD for a PMA film ($x=0.2$) with square hysteresis curve shows the oblate charge distribution in the Co$^{2+}$ site, which is consistent with the…
The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) that emerges under broken time-reversal symmetry in topological insulators (TI) exhibits many fascinating physical properties for potential applications in nano-electronics and spintronics. However, in transition-metal doped TI, the only experimentally demonstrated QAHE system to date, the effect is lost at practically relevant temperatures. This constraint is imposed by the relatively low Curie temperature (Tc) and inherent spin disorder associated with the random magnetic dopants. Here we demonstrate drastically enhanced Tc by exchange coupling TI to …
Perpendicular heterostructures based on a ferrimagnetic Mn2RuxGa (MRG) layer and a ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer were examined to understand the effects of different spacer layers (V, Mo, Hf, HfOx and TiN) on the interfaces with the magnetic electrodes, after annealing at 350 C. Loss of perpendicular anisotropy in MRG is strongly correlated with a reduction in the substrate-induced tetragonality due to relaxation of the crystal structure. In the absence of diffusion, strain and chemical ordering within MRG are correlated. The limited solubility of both Hf and Mo in MRG is a source of addition…
The mechanical properties of single-layer black phosphrous under uniaxial deformation are investigated using first-principles calculations. Both Young's modulus and the ultimate strain are found to be highly anisotropic and nonlinear as a result of its quasi-two-dimensional puckered structure. Specifically, the in-plane Young's modulus is 44.0 GPa in the direction perpendicular to the pucker, and 92.7 GPa in the parallel direction. The ultimate strain is 0.48 and 0.20 in the perpendicular and parallel directions, respectively.
The Monte Carlo method in the canonical ensemble is used to investigate magnetization reversal in amorphous transition metal - rare earth multilayers. Our study is based on a model containing diluted clusters which exhibit an effective uniaxial anisotropy in competition with random magnetic anisotropy in the matrix. We simulate hysteresis loops for an abrupt profile and a diffuse one obtained from atom probe tomography analyses. Our results evidence that the atom probe tomography profile favors perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in agreement with magnetic measurements. Moreover, the hysteresis …
Due to the complex interplay of magnetic, structural, electronic, and orbital degrees of freedom, biaxial strain is known to play an essential role in the doped manganites. For coherently strained La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) thin films grown on SrTiO(3) substrates, we measured the magnetotransport properties both parallel and perpendicular to the substrate and found an anomaly of the electrical transport properties. Whereas metallic behavior is found within the plane of biaxial strain, for transport perpendicular to this plane an insulating behavior and non-linear current-voltage characteristics (IVC…
We have predicted a new phase of nitrogen with octagon structure in our previous study, which we referred to as octa-nitrogene (ON). In this work, we make further investigation on its electronic structure. The phonon band structure has no imaginary phonon modes, which indicates that ON is dynamically stable. Using ab initio molecular dynamic simulations, the structure is found to stable up to 100K, and ripples that are similar to that of graphene is formed on the ON sheet. Based on DFT calculation on its band structure, single layer ON is a 2D large-gap semiconductor with a band gap of 4.7eV. …
The Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have recently attracted a great deal of attention for spintronics applications. Here, we report the induced PMA in the ultrathin YIG films grown on (Gd2.6Ca0.4)(Ga4.1Mg0.25Zr0.65)O12 (SGGG) substrates by epitaxial strain without preprocessing. Reciprocal space mapping shows that the films are lattice-matched to the substrates without strain relaxation. Through ferromagnetic resonance and polarized neutron reflectometry measurements, we find that these YIG films have ultra-low Gilbert damping constant with a magnetic dead lay…
High perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), a property needed for nanoscale spintronic applications, is rare in oxide conductors. We report the observation of a PMA up to 0.23 MJ/m3 in modestly strained epitaxial NiCo2O4 (NCO) films which are room-temperature ferrimagnetic conductors. Spin-lattice coupling manifested as magnetoelastic effect was found as the origin of the PMA. The in-plane xx-yy states of Co on tetrahedral sites play crucial role in the magnetic anisotropy and spin-lattice coupling with an energy scale of 1 meV/f.u. The elucidation of the microscopic origin paves a way for e…
The exchange bias effect in compensated IrMn3/Co(111) system is studied using multiscale modeling from "ab initio" to atomistic calculations. We evaluate numerically the out-of-plane hysteresis loops of the bi-layer for different thickness of the ferromagnetic layer. The results show the existence of a perpendicular exchange bias field and an enhancement of the coercivity of the system. In order to elucidate the possible origin of the exchange bias, we analyze the hysteresis loops of a selected bi-layer by tuning the different contributions to the exchange interactions across the interface. Ou…
Ultra-thin film of FeRh on insulator MgO substrate has been investigated usingab-initio electronic structure calculations. From this calculation, we have found the interesting effect of epitaxial strain on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA). Analysis of the energy and k-resolved distribution of the orbital character of the band structure reveals that MCA largely arises from the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between dx2-y2 andd xz,yz orbitals of Fe atoms at the FeRh/MgO interface. We demonstrate that the strain has significant effects on the MCA: It not only affects the value of the MCA but al…
