We report the effect of dilute alloying of the anion sublattice with S on the in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and magnetization reversal process in Ga1-xMnxP as measured by both ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. At T=5K, raising the S concentration increases the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy between in-plane <011> directions while decreasing the magnitude of the (negative) cubic anisotropy field. Simulation of the SQUID magnetometry indicates that the energy required for the nucleation and growth of domain walls decreases with increasing y. These combined effects have a marked influence on the shape of the field-dependent magnetization curves; while the direction remains the easy axis in the plane of the film, the field dependence of the magnetization develops double hysteresis loops in the [011] direction as the S concentration increases similar to those observed for perpendicular magnetization reversal in lightly doped Ga1-xMnxAs. The incidence of double hysteresis loops is explained with a simple model whereby magnetization reversal occurs by a combination of coherent spin rotation and noncoherent spin switching, which is consistent with both FMR and magnetometry experiments. The evolution of magnetic properties with S concentration is attributed to compensation of Mn acceptors by S donors, which results in a lowering of the concentration of holes that mediate ferromagnetism.
Spin-transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) are spintronic phenomena allowing magnetization manipulation using electrical currents. Beyond their fundamental interest, they allow developing new classes of magnetic memories and logic devices, in particular based on domain wall (DW) motion. In this work, we report the study of STT driven DW motion in ferrimagnetic manganese nickel nitride (Mn4-xNixN) films, in which a fine adjustment of the Ni content allows setting the magnetic compensation at room temperature. The reduced magnetization, combined with the large spin polarization of co…
Sublattice spin reversal and field induced $Fe^{3+}$ spin-canting across the magnetic compensation temperature in $Y_{1.5}Gd_{1.5}Fe_{5}O_{12}$ rare-earth iron garnet
We report direct observation of gyromagnetic reversal, which is the sign change of gyromagnetic ratio in a ferrimagnet Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, by using the Barnett effect measurement technique at low temperatures. The Barnett effect is a phenomenon in which magnetization is induced by mechanical rotation through the coupling between rotation and total angular momentum $J$ of electrons. The magnetization of Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ induced by mechanical rotation disappears at 135~K and 240~K. The temperatures correspond to the magnetization compensation temperature $T_{\rm M}$ and the angular momentu…
In the admixed Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2 system, magnetic moments of Nd and Ho occupying the same crystallographic site are antiferromagnetically coupled and the chosen stoichiometry displays a magnetic compensation behavior (Tcomp of about 24 K) in all orientations. In the vicinity of Tcomp, the conduction electron polarization (CEP) assumes the role of a soft ferromagnet exchange coupled to a pseudo-antiferromagnet comprising Nd/Ho moments, resulting in an asymmetry in the hysteretic (M-H) loop, i.e., the notion of an exchange bias field (Hexch). Across Tcomp, the CEP contribution reverses sign, and i…
The magnetic behaviour of a disordered ferrimagnetic system Ap B1-p where both A and B represent the magnetic atoms with respective spin SA = 1/2 and SB = 1 in presence of high magnetic field is treated theoretically.Assuming the magnetic interaction can be described through Ising Hamiltonian the approximate free energy is obtained using the cluster-variational method. The field dependence of the magnetization is then obtained for different concentration p and exchange parameters (JAA, JBB and JAB). For p = 0.5,the magnetization M in ferrimagnetic state and in absence of compensation temperatu…
Magnetization reversal using circularly polarized light provides a new way to control magnetization without any external magnetic field and has the potential to revolutionize magnetic data storage. However, in order to reach ultra-high density data storage, high anisotropy media providing thermal stability are needed. Here, we evidence all-optical magnetization switching for different TbxCo1-x ferrimagnetic alloy composition and demonstrate all-optical switching for films with anisotropy fields reaching 6 T corresponding to anisotropy constants of 3x106 ergs/cm3. Optical magnetization switchin…
Exchange bias effect is an important attribute in several device applications. Traditionally, it is discussed as a form of exchange anisotropy at the interface between the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic layers of two distinct systems. We report here on the magnetically ordered alloys possessing the feature of unidirectional anisotropy, which reverses its sign across a characteristic temperature. These are admixed rare earth intermetallics, comprising two dissimilar rare earth (RE) ions, belonging to the two different halves of the 4f-series and imbibing the notion of ferromagnetic coupling be…
The double perovskite compound, Sr$_{2}$YbRuO$_{6}$, displays reversal in the orientation of magnetic moments along with negative magnetization due to an underlying magnetic compensation phenomenon. The exchange bias (EB) field below the compensation temperature could be the usual negative or the positive depending on the initial cooling field. This EB attribute has the potential of getting tuned in a preselected manner, as the positive EB field is seen to crossover from positive to negative value above $T_{\mathrm{comp}}$.
We report on the study of magnetic properties of the La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6 double perovskite. Via ac magnetic susceptibility we have observed evidence of weak ferromagnetism and reentrant spin glass behavior on an antiferromagnetic matrix. Regarding the magnetic behavior as a function of temperature, we have found that the material displays up to three inversions of its magnetization, depending on the appropriate choice of the applied magnetic field. At low temperature the material exhibit exchange bias effect when it is cooled in the presence of a magnetic field. Also, our results indicate that th…
Compensation-Like Temperature and Spin-Flip Switch in Strained Thulium Iron Garnet Thin Films: Tuning Sublattice Interactions for Ferrimagnetic Spintronics
Detailed magnetic properties of the compound Sr2YbRuO6 are presented here. The compound belongs to the family of double perovskites forming a monoclinic structure. Magnetization meas-urements reveal clear evidence for two components of magnetic ordering aligned opposite to each other, leading to a magnetization reversal, compensation temperature (T* = 34 K) and neg-ative magnetization at low temperatures and low magnetic fields. Heat capacity measurements corroborate the presence of two components in the magnetic ordering and a noticeable third anomaly at low temperatures (~15 K) which cannot …
We report a systematic study of current-induced perpendicular magnetization switching in W/Co$_{x}$Tb$_{1-x}$/Al thin films with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Various Co$_{x}$Tb$_{1-x}$ ferrimagnetic alloys with different magnetic compensation temperatures are presented. The systems are characterized using MOKE, SQUID and anomalous Hall resistance at different cryostat temperature ranging from 10 K to 350 K. The current-switching experiments are performed in the spin-orbit torque geometry where the current pulses are injected in plane and the magnetization reversal is detected by m…
A systematic study using neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility are reported on Mn substituted ferrimagnetic inverse spinel Ti$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Co$_2$O$_4$ in the temperature interval 1.6 K $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ 300 K. Our neutron diffraction study reveals cooperative distortions of the $T$O$_6$ octahedral for all the Jahn-Teller active ions $T$ = Mn$^{3+}$, Ti$^{3+}$ and Co$^{3+}$, which are confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Two specific compositions ($x$ = 0.2 and 0.4) have been chosen because of their unique features: noncollinear Yafet-Kittel type ordering, and weak tet…
Rare earth based intermetallics, SmScGe and NdScGe, are shown to exhibit near zero net magnetization with substitutions of 6 to 9 atomic percent of Nd and 25 atomic percent of Gd, respectively. The notion of magnetic compensation in them is also elucidated by the crossover of zero magnetization axis at low magnetic fields (less than 103 Oe) and field-induced reversal in the orientation of the magnetic moments of the dissimilar rare earth ions at higher magnetic fields. These magnetically ordered materials with no net magnetization and appreciable conduction electron polarization display an att…
Spin Hall effect (SHE) induced reversal of perpendicular magnetization has attracted significant interest, due to its potential to lead to low power memory and logic devices. However, the switching requires an assisted in-plane magnetic field, which hampers its practical applications. Here, we introduce a novel approach for external-field-free spin Hall switching of a perpendicular nanomagnet by utilizing a local dipolar field arising from an adjacent in-plane magnetic layer. Robust switching of perpendicular CoFeB nanopillars in a dipole-coupled composite stack is experimentally demonstrated …
