We study Schreier dynamical systems associated with a vast family of groups that hosts many known examples of groups of intermediate growth. We are interested in the orbital graphs for the actions of these groups on $d-$regular rooted trees and on their boundaries, viewed as topological spaces or as spaces with measure. They form interesting families of finitely ramified graphs, and we study their combinatorics, their isomorphism classes and their geometric properties, such as growth and the number of ends.
We study the number of ends of a Schreier graph of a hyperbolic group. Let G be a hyperbolic group and let H be a subgroup of G. In general, there is no algorithm to compute the number of ends of a Schreier graph of the pair (G, H). However, assuming that H is a quasi-convex subgroup of G, we construct an algorithm.
Schreier graphs of the actions of Thompson's group $F$ on the orbits of all points of the unit interval and of the Cantor set with respect to the standard generating set $\{x_0,x_1\}$ are explicitly constructed. The closure of the space of pointed Schreier graphs of the action of $F$ on the orbits of dyadic rational numbers and corresponding Schreier dynamical system are described. In particular, we answer the question of Grigorchuk on the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the underlying space of the Schreier dynamical system in the context of $F$. As applications we prove that the pointed Schreier gra…
We present relations between growth, growth of diameters and the rate of vanishing of the spectral gap in Schreier graphs of automaton groups. In particular, we introduce a series of examples, called Hanoi Towers groups since they model the well known Hanoi Towers Problem, that illustrate some of the possible types of behavior.
We show that if $H$ is a quasiconvex subgroup of infinite index in a non-elementary hyperbolic group $G$ then the Schreier coset graph $X$ for $G$ relative to $H$ is non-amenable (that is, $X$ has positive Cheeger constant). We present some corollaries regading the Martin boundary and Martin compactification of $X$ and the co-growth of $H$ in $G$.
The Stallings construction for finitely generated subgroups of free groups is generalized by introducing the concept of Stallings section, which allows an eficient computation of the core of a Schreier graph based on edge folding. It is proved that those groups admitting Stallings sections are precisely finitely generated virtually free groups, through a constructive approach based on Bass-Serre theory. Complexity issues and applications are also discussed.
We investigate the Ihara zeta functions of finite Schreier graphs $Γ_n$ of the Basilica group. We show that $Γ_{1+n}$ is $2$ sheeted unramified normal covering of $Γ_n, ~\forall~ n \geq 1$ with Galois group $\displaystyle \frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2\mathbb{Z}}.$ In fact, for any $n > 1, r \geq 1$ the graph $Γ_{n+r}$ is $2^n$ sheeted unramified, non normal covering of $Γ_r.$ In order to do this we give the definition of the $generalized$ $replacement$ $product$ of Schreier graphs. We also show the corresponding results in zig zag product of Schreier graphs $Γ_n$ with a $4$ cycle.
We study spectral properties of the Laplacians on Schreier graphs arising from Grigorchuk's group acting on the boundary of the infinite binary tree. We establish a connection between the action of $G$ on its space of Schreier graphs and a subshift associated to a non-primitive substitution and relate the Laplacians on the Schreier graphs to discrete Schroedinger operators with aperiodic order. We use this relation to prove that the spectrum of the anisotropic Laplacians is a Cantor set of Lebesgue measure zero. We also use it to show absence of eigenvalues both almost-surely and for certain s…
We introduce a new method of proving upper estimates of growth of finitely generated groups and constructing groups of intermediate growth using graphs of their actions. These estimates are of the form $\exp(n^α)$ for some $α<1$, and provide the first examples of such bounds for simple groups of intermediate growth.
The paper is concerned with the space of the marked Schreier graphs of the Grigorchuk group and the action of the group on this space. In particular, we describe an invariant set of the Schreier graphs corresponding to the action on the boundary of the binary rooted tree and dynamics of the group action restricted to this invariant set.
We prove that the number of iterations taken by the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm for configurations coming from Schreier graphs is closely linked to the diameter of the graphs themselves: an upper bound is found for general Schreier graphs, and a lower bound holds for particular cases, such as for Schreier graphs with $G=\mbox{SL}_{n}({\mathbb F}_{q})$ ($q>2$) acting on $k$-tuples of vectors in ${\mathbb F}_{q}^{n}$; moreover, an exact expression is found in the case of Cayley graphs.
Every self-similar group acts on the space $X^ω$ of infinite words over some alphabet $X$. We study the Schreier graphs $Γ_w$ for $w\in X^ω$ of the action of self-similar groups generated by bounded automata on the space $X^ω$. Using sofic subshifts we determine the number of ends for every Schreier graph $Γ_w$. Almost all Schreier graphs $Γ_w$ with respect to the uniform measure on $X^ω$ have one or two ends, and we characterize bounded automata whose Schreier graphs have two ends almost surely. The connection with (local) cut-points of limit spaces of self-similar groups is established.
Finite dimensional representations of the Hanoi Towers group are used to calculate the spectra of the finite graphs associated to the Hanoi Towers Game on three pegs (the group serves as a renorm group for the game). These graphs are Schreier graphs of the action of the Hanoi Towers group on the levels of the rooted ternary tree. The spectrum of the limiting graph (Schreier graph of the action on the boundary of the tree) is also provided.
Every automaton group naturally acts on the space $X^ω$ of infinite sequences over some alphabet $X$. For every $w\in X^ω$ we consider the Schreier graph $Γ_w$ of the action of the group on the orbit of $w$. We prove that for a large class of automaton groups all Schreier graphs $Γ_w$ have subexponential growth bounded above by $n^{(\log n)^m}$ with some constant $m$. In particular, this holds for all groups generated by automata with polynomial activity growth (in terms of S.Sidki), confirming a conjecture of V.Nekrashevych. We present applications to omega-periodic graphs and Hanoi graphs.
For every infinite sequence $ω=x_1,x_2,...$, with $x_i\in\{0,1\}$, we construct an infinite 4-regular graph $X_ω$. These graphs are precisely the Schreier graphs of the action of a certain self-similar group on the space $\{0,1\}^{\infty}$. We solve the isomorphism and local isomorphism problems for these graphs, and determine their automorphism groups. Finally, we prove that all graphs $X_ω$ have intermediate growth.
Let the group $G$ act transitively on the finite set $Ω$, and let $S \subseteq G$ be closed under taking inverses. The Schreier graph $Sch(G \circlearrowleft Ω,S)$ is the graph with vertex set $Ω$ and edge set $\{ (ω,ω^s) : ω\in Ω, s \in S \}$. In this paper, we show that random Schreier graphs on $C \log|Ω|$ elements exhibit a (two-sided) spectral gap with high probability, magnifying a well known theorem of Alon and Roichman for Cayley graphs. On the other hand, depending on the particular action of $G$ on $Ω$, we give a lower bound on the number of elements which are necessary to provide a …
With any self-similar action of a finitely generated group $G$ of automorphisms of a regular rooted tree $T$ can be naturally associated an infinite sequence of finite graphs $\{Γ_n\}_{n\geq 1}$, where $Γ_n$ is the Schreier graph of the action of $G$ on the $n$-th level of $T$. Moreover, the action of $G$ on $\partial T$ gives rise to orbital Schreier graphs $Γ_ξ$, $ξ\in \partial T$. Denoting by $ξ_n$ the prefix of length $n$ of the infinite ray $ξ$, the rooted graph $(Γ_ξ,ξ)$ is then the limit of the sequence of finite rooted graphs $\{(Γ_n,ξ_n)\}_{n\geq 1}$ in the sense of pointed Gromov-Hau…
There is a recently discovered connection between the spectral theory of Schrö-dinger operators whose potentials exhibit aperiodic order and that of Laplacians associated with actions of groups on regular rooted trees, as Grigorchuk's group of intermediate growth. We give an overview of corresponding results, such as different spectral types in the isotropic and anisotropic cases, including Cantor spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero and absence of eigenvalues. Moreover, we discuss the relevant background as well as the combinatorial and dynamical tools that allow one to establish the afore-menti…
We prove that every $2d$-regular unimodular random network carries an invariant random Schreier decoration. Equivalently, it is the Schreier coset graph of an invariant random subgroup of the free group $F_d$. As a corollary we get that every $2d$-regular graphing is the local isomorphic image of a graphing coming from a p.m.p. action of $F_d$. The key ingredients of the analogous statement for finite graphs do not generalize verbatim to the measurable setting. We find a more subtle way of adapting these ingredients and prove measurable coloring theorems for graphings along the way.
We provide equivalent conditions for Liouville property of actions of groups. As an application, we show that there is a Liouville measure for the action of the Thompson group $F$ on dyadic rationals. This result should be compared with a recent result of Kaimanovich, where he shows that the action of the Thompson group F on dyadic rationals is not Liouville for all finitely supported measures. As another application we show that there is a Liouville measure for lamplighter actions. This gives more examples of non-amenable Liouville actions.
We consider a transitive action of a finitely generated group $G$ and the Schreier graph $Γ$ defined by this action for some fixed generating set. For a probability measure $μ$ on $G$ with a finite first moment we show that if the induced random walk is transient, it converges towards the space of ends of $Γ$. As a corollary we obtain that for a probability measure with a finite first moment on Thompson's group $F$, the support of which generates $F$ as a semigroup, the induced random walk on the dyadic numbers has a non-trivial Poisson boundary. Some assumption on the moment of the measure is…
We study the basic ergodic properties (ergodicity and conservativity) of the action of an arbitrary subgroup $H$ of a free group $F$ on the boundary $\partial F$ with respect to the uniform measure. Our approach is geometrical and combinatorial, and it is based on choosing a system of Nielsen--Schreier generators in $H$ associated with a geodesic spanning tree in the Schreier graph $X=H\backslash F$. We give several (mod 0) equivalent descriptions of the Hopf decomposition of the boundary into the conservative and the dissipative parts. Further we relate conservativity and dissipativity of the…
Given a finitely generated group $G$, we are interested in common geometric properties of all graphs of faithful actions of $G$. In this article we focus on their growth. We say that a group $G$ has a Schreier growth gap $f(n)$ if every faithful $G$-set $X$ satisfies $\mathrm{vol}_{G, X}(n)\succcurlyeq f(n)$, where $\mathrm{vol}_{G, X}(n)$ is the growth of the action of $G$ on $X$. Here we study Schreier growth gaps for finitely generated solvable groups. We prove that if a metabelian group $G$ is either finitely presented or torsion-free, then $G$ has a Schreier growth gap $n^2$, provided $G$…
In various occasions the conjugacy problem in finitely generated amalgamated products and HNN extensions can be decided efficiently for elements which cannot be conjugated into the base groups. This observation asks for a bound on how many such elements there are. Such bounds can be derived using the theory of amenable graphs: In this work we examine Schreier graphs of amalgamated products and HNN extensions. For an amalgamated product $G = H *_A K $ with $[H:A] \geq [K:A] \geq 2$, the Schreier graph with respect to $H$ or $K$ turns out to be non-amenable if and only if $[H:A] \geq 3$. Moreove…
We prove that the Poisson boundary of a simple random walk on the Schreier graph of action of $F$ on $\mathbb{D}$, where $\mathbb{D}$ is the set of dyadic numbers in $[0, 1]$, is non-trivial. This gives a new proof of the result of Kaimanovich: Thompson's group $F$ doesn't have Liouville property. In addition, we compute growth function of the Schreier graph of the action of $F$ on $\mathbb{D}$.
For each $p\geq 1$, the star automaton group $\mathcal{G}_{S_p}$ is an automaton group which can be defined starting from a star graph on $p+1$ vertices. We study Schreier graphs associated with the action of the group $\mathcal{G}_{S_p}$ on the regular rooted tree $T_{p+1}$ of degree $p+1$ and on its boundary $\partial T_{p+1}$. With the transitive action on the $n$-th level of $T_{p+1}$ is associated a finite Schreier graph $Γ^p_n$, whereas there exist uncountably many orbits of the action on the boundary, represented by infinite Schreier graphs which are obtained as limits of the sequence $…
A classical result of Schreier states that nontrivial finitely generated normal subgroups of free groups are of finite index, that is, free groups can only quotient to finite groups with finitely generated kernel. In this note we extend this result to the class of right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs). More precisely, we prove that the quotient of a RAAG by a finitely generated (full) normal subgroup is abelian-by-finite and finite-by-abelian. As Schreier's result extends to nontrivial free products of groups, we further show that our result extends to graph products of groups. As a corollary, we …
We consider the domino problem on Schreier graphs of self-similar groups, and more generally their monadic second-order logic. On the one hand, we prove that if the group is bounded then the graph's monadic second-order logic is decidable. This covers, for example, the Sierpiński gasket graphs and the Schreier graphs of the Basilica group. On the other hand, we already prove undecidability of the domino problem for a class of self-similar groups, answering a question by Barbieri and Sablik, and some examples including one of linear growth.
We give an example of a 4-regular infinite automatic graph of intermediate growth. It is constructed as a Schreier graph of a certain group generated by 3-state automaton. The question was motivated by an open problem on the existence of Cayley automatic groups of intermediate growth.
We show that if H is a quasiconvex subgroup of a hyperbolic group G then the relative Cayley graph Y (also known as the Schreier coset graph) for G/H is Gromov-hyperbolic. We also observe that in this situation if G is torsion-free and non-elementary and H has infinite index in G then the simple random walk on Y is transient.
Schreier formula for the rank of a subgroup of finite index of a finitely generated free group $F$ is generalized to an arbitrary (even infinitely generated) subgroup $H$ through the Schreier transversals of $H$ in $F$. The rank formula may also be expressed in terms of the cogrowth of $H$. We introduce the rank-growth function $rk_H(i)$ of a subgroup $H$ of a finitely generated free group $F$. $rk_H(i)$ is defined to be the rank of the subgroup of $H$ generated by elements of length less than or equal to $i$ (with respect to the generators of $F$), and it equals the rank of the fundamental gr…
We show how to use symbolic dynamics of Schreier graphs to embed the Grigorchuk group into a simple torsion group of intermediate growth and to construct uncountably many growth types of simple torsion groups.
We study the isoperimetric profiles of certain families of finitely generated groups defined via marked Schreier graphs and permutation wreath products. The groups we study are among the "simplest" examples within a much larger class of groups, all defined via marked Schreier graphs and/or action on rooted trees, which includes such examples as the long range group, Grigorchuck group and the basillica group. The highly non-linear structure of these groups make them both interesting and difficult to study. Because of the relative simplicity of the Schreier graphs that define the groups we study…
In this paper we define a way to get a bounded invertible automaton starting from a finite graph. It turns out that the corresponding automaton group is regular weakly branch over its commutator subgroup, contains a free semigroup on two elements and is amenable of exponential growth. We also highlight a connection between our construction and the right-angled Artin groups. We then study the Schreier graphs associated with the self-similar action of these automaton groups on the regular rooted tree. We explicitly determine their diameter and their automorphism group in the case where the initi…
We consider a finitely generated group acting minimally on a compact space by homeomorphsims, and assume that the Schreier graph of at least one orbit is quasi-isometric to a line. We show that the topological full group of such an action is amenable.
The theory of $k$-regular graphs is closely related to group theory. Every $k$-regular, bipartite graph is a Schreier graph with respect to some group $G$, a set of generators $S$ (depending only on $k$) and a subgroup $H$. The goal of this paper is to begin to develop such a framework for $k$-regular simplicial complexes of general dimension $d$. Our approach does not directly generalize the concept of a Schreier graph, but still presents an extensive family of $k$-regular simplicial complexes as quotients of one universal object: the $k$-regular $d$-dimensional arboreal complex, which is its…
The Schreier graphs of Thompson's group F with respect to the stabilizer of 1/2 and generators x_0 and x_1, and of its unitary representation in L_2([0,1]) induced by the standard action on the interval [0,1] are explicitly described. The coamenability of the stabilizers of any finite set of dyadic rational numbers is established. The induced subgraph of the right Cayley graph of the positive monoid of F containing all the vertices of the form x_nv, where n>=0 and v is any word over the alphabet {x_0, x_1}, is constructed. It is proved that the latter graph is non-amenable.
We construct a group acting on a binary rooted tree; this discrete group mimics the monodromy action of iterates of $f(z)=z^2-1$ on associated coverings of the Riemann sphere. We then derive some algebraic properties of the group, and describe for that specific example the connection between group theory, geometry and dynamics. The most striking is probably that the quotient Cayley graphs of the group (aka ``Schreier graphs'') converge to the Julia set of $f$.
We describe a new class of groups of Burnside type, giving a procedure transforming an arbitrary non-free minimal action of the dihedral group on a Cantor set into an orbit-equivalent action of an infinite finitely generated periodic group. We show that if the associated Schreier graphs are linearly repetitive, then the group is of intermediate growth. In particular, this gives first examples of simple groups of intermediate growth.
We study commensurating actions of groups and the associated properties FW and PW, in connection with wallings, median graphs, CAT(0) cubings and multi-ended Schreier graphs.
Following ideas that go back to Cannon, we show the rationality of various generating functions of growth sequences counting embeddings of convex subgraphs in locally-finite, vertex-transitive graphs with the (relative) falsification by fellow traveler property (fftp). In particular, we recover results of Cannon, of Epstein, Iano-Fletcher and Zwick, and of Calegari and Fujiwara. One of our applications concerns Schreier coset graphs of hyperbolic groups relative to quasi-convex subgroups, we show that these graphs have rational growth, the falsification by fellow traveler property, and the exi…
We construct a finitely generated group $G$ without the Liouville property such that the return probability of a random walk satisfies $p_{2n}(e,e) \gtrsim e^{-n^{1/2 + o(1)}}$. Recent results suggest that $1/2$ is indeed the smallest possible return probability exponent for non-Liouville groups. Our construction is based on permutational wreath products over tree-like Schreier graphs and the analysis of large deviations of inverted orbits on such graphs.
We give the first example of a connected 4-regular graph whose Laplace operator's spectrum is a Cantor set, as well as several other computations of spectra following a common ``finite approximation'' method. These spectra are simple transforms of the Julia sets associated to some quadratic maps. The graphs involved are Schreier graphs of fractal groups of intermediate growth, and are also ``substitutional graphs''. We also formulate our results in terms of Hecke type operators related to some irreducible quasi-regular representations of fractal groups and in terms of the Markovian operator as…
For any order of growth $f(n)=o(\log n)$ we construct a finitely-generated group $G$ and a set of generators $S$ such that the Cayley graph of $G$ with respect to $S$ supports a harmonic function with growth $f$ but does not support any harmonic function with slower growth. The construction uses permutational wreath products in which the base group is defined via its properly chosen Schreier graph.
We describe the infinite family of spider-web graphs $S_{k,M,N }$, $k \geq 2$, $M \geq 1$ and $N \geq 0$, studied in physical literature as tensor products of well-known de Brujin graphs $B_{k,N}$ and cyclic graphs $C_M$ and show that these graphs are Schreier graphs of the lamplighter groups $L_k = Z/kZ \wr Z$. This allows us to compute their spectra and to identify the infinite limit of $S_{k,M,N}$, as $N, M \to\infty$, with the Cayley graph of the lamplighter group $L_k$. This is the final version of the article, taking in account comments from the referees and with an extended introduction…
