We present relations between growth, growth of diameters and the rate of vanishing of the spectral gap in Schreier graphs of automaton groups. In particular, we introduce a series of examples, called Hanoi Towers groups since they model the well known Hanoi Towers Problem, that illustrate some of the possible types of behavior.

Schreier spectrum of the Hanoi Towers group on three pegs

Finite dimensional representations of the Hanoi Towers group are used to calculate the spectra of the finite graphs associated to the Hanoi Towers Game on three pegs (the group serves as a renorm group for the game). These graphs are Schreier graphs of the action of the Hanoi Towers group on the levels of the rooted ternary tree. The spectrum of the limiting graph (Schreier graph of the action on the boundary of the tree) is also provided.

A constructive proof that the Hanoi towers group has non-trivial rigid kernel

In 2012, Bartholdi, Siegenthaler, and Zalesskii computed the rigid kernel of the Hanoi towers group. We present a simpler proof that the rigid kernel is the Klein 4 group. In the course of the proof, we also compute the rigid stabilizers and present proofs that this group is a self-similar, recurrent, regular branch group.

Modified Hanoi Towers Groups and Limit Spaces

We introduce the $k$-peg Hanoi automorphisms and Hanoi self-similar groups, a generalization of the Hanoi Towers groups, and give conditions for them to be contractive. We analyze the limit spaces of a particular family of contracting Hanoi groups, $H_c^{(k)}$, and show that these are the unique maximal contracting Hanoi groups under a suitable symmetry condition. Finally, we provide partial results on the contraction of Hanoi groups with weaker symmetry.

The word problem in Hanoi Towers groups

We prove that elements of the Hanoi Towers groups $\mathcal{H}_m$ have depth bounded from above by a poly-logarithmic function $O(\log^{m-2} n)$, where $n$ is the length of an element. Therefore the word problem in groups $\mathcal{H}_m$ is solvable in subexponential time $\exp(O(\log^{m-2} n))$.

The congruence subgroup problem for a family of branch groups

We construct a family of groups which generalize the Hanoi towers group and study the congruence subgroup problem for the groups in this family. We show that unlike the Hanoi towers group, the groups in this generalization are just infinite and have trivial rigid kernel. We also put strict bounds on the branch kernel. Additionally, we show that these groups have subgroups of finite index with non-trivial rigid kernel. Growth of Schreier graphs of automaton groups

Every automaton group naturally acts on the space $X^ω$ of infinite sequences over some alphabet $X$. For every $w\in X^ω$ we consider the Schreier graph $Γ_w$ of the action of the group on the orbit of $w$. We prove that for a large class of automaton groups all Schreier graphs $Γ_w$ have subexponential growth bounded above by $n^{(\log n)^m}$ with some constant $m$. In particular, this holds for all groups generated by automata with polynomial activity growth (in terms of S.Sidki), confirming a conjecture of V.Nekrashevych. We present applications to omega-periodic graphs and Hanoi graphs.

Strong approximation in random towers of graphs

The term "strong approximation" is used to describe phenomena where an arithmetic group as well as all of its Zariski dense subgroups have a large image in the congruence quotients. Self-similar groups and holomorphic dynamics: Renormalization, integrability, and spectrum

In this paper, we explore the spectral measures of the Laplacian on Schreier graphs for several self-similar groups (the Grigorchuk, Lamplighter, and Hanoi groups) from the dynamical and algebro-geometric viewpoints. For these graphs, classical Schur renormalization transformations act on appropriate spectral parameters as rational maps in two variables.
