The synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has been a primary focus for 2D nanomaterial research over the last 10 years, however, only a small fraction of this research has been concentrated on transition metal ditellurides. In particular, nanoscale platinum ditelluride (PtTe2) has rarely been investigated, despite its potential applications in catalysis, photonics and spintronics. Of the reports published, the majority examine mechanically-exfoliated flakes from chemical vapor transport (CVT) grown crystals. While this production method is ideal for fundamental studies, it is very resource intensive therefore rendering this process unsuitable for large scale applications. In this report, the synthesis of thin films of PtTe2 through the reaction of solid-phase precursor films is described. This offers a production method for large-area, thickness-controlled PtTe2, suitable for a range of applications. These polycrystalline PtTe2 films were grown at temperatures as low as 450 degC, significantly below the typical temperatures used in the CVT synthesis methods. To investigate their potential applicability, these films were examined as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The films showed promising catalytic behavior, however, the PtTe2 was found to undergo chemical transformation to a substoichiometric chalcogenide compound under ORR conditions. This study shows while PtTe2 is stable and highly useful for HER, this property does not apply to ORR, which undergoes a fundamentally different mechanism. This study broadens our knowledge of the electrocatalysis of TMDs.

For generation of sustainable, clean and highly efficient energy, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction represents an attractive platform, thus inviting immense research activities in recent years. However, designing the catalyst with enhanced electrocatalytic activity remains one of the major challenges. Here, we examined the oxygen evolution reaction activities of geometrically designed (with and without step-textured morphology) thin films of an electrocatalytically active correlated metallic SrRuO3 perovskite grown on c- and r-plane sapphire substrates. On c-plane sapphire, as com…
Novel member of polymetalloporphines, namely manganese polymetalloporphine of type I (pMnP-I) obtained by ion exchange from magnesium polyporphine of type I (pMgP-I) is reported for the first time and compared to its cobalt analogue (pCoP-I). Both polymer films have been obtained via two-step procedure: demetalation of the pMgP-I electrode film via its exposure to trifluoroacetic acid solution, resulting in formation of the metal-free polyporphine of type I (pH2P-I) followed by electrochemically induced incorporation of Co or Mn ions from the acetonitrile solution of cobalt and manganese perch…

We develop herein plasmonic-catalytic Au-IrO$_2$ nanostructures with a morphology optimized for efficient light harvesting and catalytic surface area; the nanoparticles have a dendritic morphology, with closely spaced Au branches all partially covered by an ultrathin (1 nm) IrO$_2$ shell. This nanoparticle architecture optimizes optical features due to the interactions of closely spaced plasmonic branches forming electromagnetic hot spots, and the ultra-thin IrO$_2$ layer maximizes efficient use of this expensive catalyst. This concept was evaluated towards the enhancement of the electrocataly…
The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered a key reaction for electrochemical energy conversion but slow kinetics hamper application in electrolyzers, metal-air batteries and other applications that rely on sustainable protons from water oxidation. In this review, the prospect of epitaxial perovskite oxides for the OER at room temperature in alkaline media is reviewed with respect to fundamental insight into systematic trends of the activity. First, we thoroughly define the perovskite structure and its parameter space. Then, the synthesis methods used to make electrocatalytic epitaxial …

Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS$_2$) has been recognized as a potential substitution of Platinum (Pt) for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the broad adoption of MoS$_2$ is hindered by its limited number of active sites and relatively low inherent electrical conductivity. In this work, we demonstrated a synergistic enhancement of both active site exposure and electrical conductivity by a one-step solvothermal synthesis technique. The 1T-phase enriched MoS$_2$ was directly formed on the titanium carbide (Ti$_3$C$_2$Tx, MXene) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) acting as crosslinks…
Advanced materials for electrocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting are central to the area of renewable energy. Here, we developed a solvothermal synthesis of MoS2 nanoparticles selectively on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets suspended in solution. The resulting MoS2/RGO hybrid material possessed nanoscopic few-layer MoS2 structures with abundant exposed edges stacked onto graphene, in strong contrast to large aggregated MoS2 particles grown freely in solution without GO. The MoS2/RGO hybrid exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) …
Transition metal oxides have long been an area of interest for water electrocatalysis through the oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions. Iron oxides, such as LaFeO$_{3}$, are particularly promising due to the favorable energy alignment of the valence and conduction bands comprised of Fe$^{3+}$ cations and the visible light band gap of such materials. In this work, we examine the role of band alignment on the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the intrinsic semiconductor LaFeO$_{3}$ by growing epitaxial films of varying thicknesses on Nb-doped SrTiO$_{3}$. Using cycli…

La-based perovskites are a versatile class of materials that are of interest for solid oxide fuel cells and electrocatalytic water splitting. During fabrication of composition spread materials libraries of La-Co-based oxide systems for the discovery of new catalytic materials, an unusual phase formation phenomenon was observed: instead of the expected continuous composition gradient, regions with homogeneous composition and single-phase structure (La2O3 or stoichiometric La-perovskite) form. This phenomenon occurs during reactive co-sputtering and is dependent on O2-flux and substrate temperat…
We report on the synthesis of perovskite SrIrO3 thin films using sputtering technique. Single phase (110) oriented SrIrO$_3$ thin films were epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (001) substrate. Using off-axis XRD $θ-2θ$ scans, we demonstrate that these films exhibit (110) out-of-plane orientation with (001) and (1-10) lying in-plane. The sputtering grown thin films have a smooth, homogeneous surface, and excellent coherent interface with the substrate.
We present a synthesis/processing method for fabricating ferrimagnetic insulator (Bi-doped yttrium iron garnet) thin films with tunable magnetic anisotropy. Since the desired magnetic properties rely on controllable thickness and successful doping, we pay attention to the entire synthesis/processing procedure (nanopowder synthesis, nanocrystalline target preparation and pulsed laser deposition (PLD)). Atomically flat films were deposited by PLD on (111)-orientated yttrium aluminum garnet. We show a significant enhancement of perpendicular anisotropy in the films, caused by strain-induced aniso…
We report on the synthesis of CdSe quantum dots on a graphene surface by an electrochemical deposition method. By using a mesoporous silica film formed on the graphene surface as a template and a potential equalizer between the edge/defect sites and the basal plane of the graphene, CdSe quantum dots can be grown on the basal plane into a regular hexagonal array.
We report on the synthesis and characterization of nanocrystalline delta-MoN by crystallization of amorphous thin films grown on (100) Si by reactive sputtering at room temperature. Films with chemical composition MoN were grown using a deposition pressure of 5mTorr with a reactive mixture of Ar/(Ar+N2)=0.5. The as-grown films display mostly amorphous structure. Nanocrystalline delta-MoN phase is obtained after annealing at temperatures above 600 °C. The superconducting critical temperature Tc depends on film thickness. Thick films (170 nm) annealed at 700 °C for 30 min display a Tc = 11.2 K (…
Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) consists in a controlled sequence of metal organic precursors and co-reactant vapor exposure cycles of polymer films. Two aspects characterize a SIS process: precursor molecule diffusion within the polymer matrix and precursor molecule entrapment into polymer films via chemical reaction. In this paper, we investigated SIS process for the alumina synthesis using trimethylaluminum (TMA) and H2O in thin films of poly(styrene-random-methyl methacrylate) (P(S-r-MMA)) with variable MMA content. The amount of alumina grown in the P(S-r-MMA) films linearly depen…
Microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) has been traditionally used to synthesize carbon-based materials such as diamonds, carbon nanotubes and graphene. Here we report that a rapid and catalyst-free growth of SnSe thin films can be achieved by using single-mode MPCVD with appropriate source materials. The analysis combing microscope images, X-ray diffraction patterns and lattice vibration modes shows that the grown thin films were composed of orthorhombic structured SnSe polycrystals mainly along the (111) direction. Further thermoelectric (TE) characterizations reveal that the pow…
We propose an experimental approach, by which thin films of copper polyphthalocyanine (CuPPC) can be directly synthesized in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) set-up at mild temperature (420 °C). High polymerization degree and high crystallinity of the films was confirmed by TEM, FTIR and UV-VIS studies; the stacking structure of CuPPC layers was determined, inter-layer spacing was estimated from XRD and TEM electron-diffraction. Quantum-chemical study performed providing support for experimental structure determination and yielding information on the electronic structure.
Great enthusiasm in single atom catalysts (SACs) for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR) has been aroused by the discovery of Metal (M)-Nx as a promising catalytic center. However, the performance of available SACs,including poor activity and selectivity,is far away from the industrial requirement because of the inappropriate adsorption behaviors of the catalytic centers. Through the first principles high throughput screening, we find that the rational construction of Fe-Fe dual atom centered site distributed on graphite carbon nitride (Fe2/gCN) compromises the ability to adsorb N2H and NH2, achiev…

Thin films of phase pure pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7 have been synthesized by RF magnetron sputtering. The films were prepared from oxide targets in 50%O2/Ar atmosphere and deposited on 111 YSZ substrates at a temperature of 800C. The pyrochlore structure was confirmed via grazing angle x-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). TEM analysis also showed that the films were dense and of uniform thickness with surface roughness of approximately 8nm. The total conductivity measured with AC impedance spectroscopy was found to be independent of thickness and comparable in magnitude to…
A novel sol-gel route to c-axis orientated undoped and Co, Fe, Mn and V doped ZnO films is reported. Sols were prepared from a hydrated zinc acetate precursor and dimethyl formamide (DMF) solvent. Films were spin-coated on to hydrophilic sapphire substrates then dried, annealed and post-annealed, producing almost purely uniaxial ZnO crystallites and a high degree of long-range structural order. Specific orientation of hexagonal crystallites is demonstrated both perpendicular and parallel to the substrate surface. Cobalt doping resulted in the formation of columnar ZnO nanocrystals. Vanadium do…
Properties of complex oxide thin films can be tuned over a range of values as a function of mismatch, composition, orientation, and structure. Here, we report a strategy for growing structured epitaxial thermoelectric thin films leading to improved Seebeck coefficient. Instead of using single-crystal sapphire substrates to support epitaxial growth, Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$ films are deposited, using the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique, onto Al$_2$O$_3$ polycrystalline substrates textured by Spark Plasma Sintering. The structural quality of the 2000 Åthin film was investigated by Transmission Electr…
We report a scalable approach to synthesize a large-area (up to 4 mm) thin black phosphorus (BP) film on a flexible substrate. We first deposited a red phosphorus (RP) thin-film on a flexible polyester substrate, followed by its conversion to BP in a high-pressure multi-anvil cell at room temperature. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements confirmed the formation of a nano-crystalline BP thin-film with a thickness of around 40 nm. Optical characterization indicates a bandgap of around 0.28 eV in the converted BP, similar to the bandgap measured in exfoliated thin-…
Tungsten ditelluride is a layered transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) that has attracted increasing research interest in recent years. WTe2 has demonstrated large non-saturating magnetoresistance, potential for spintronic applications and promise as a type-II Weyl semimetal. The majority of works on WTe2 have relied on mechanically-exfoliated flakes from chemical vapour transport (CVT) grown crystals for their investigations. While producing high-quality samples, this method is hindered by several disadvantages including long synthesis times, high-temperature anneals and an inherent lack of …
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a layered two-dimensional material with properties that make it promising as a dielectric in various applications. We report the growth of h-BN films on Ni foils from elemental B and N using molecular beam epitaxy. The presence of crystalline h-BN over the entire substrate is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy is used to examine the morphology and continuity of the synthesized films. A scanning electron microscopy study of films obtained using shorter depositions offers insight into the nucleation and growth behavior of h-BN on the Ni sub…
Owing to the small energy differences between its polymorphs, MoTe2 can access a full spectrum of electronic states, from the 2H semiconducting state to the 1T semimetallic state, and from the Td Weyl semimetallic state to the superconducting state in the 1T and Td phase at low temperature. Thus, it is a model system for phase transformation studies as well as quantum phenomena such as the quantum spin Hall effect and topological superconductivity. Careful studies of MoTe2 and its potential applications require large area MoTe2 thin films with high crystallinity and thickness control. Here, we…
We developed means to produce wafer scale, high-quality graphene films as large as 3 inch wafer size on Ni and Cu films under ambient-pressure and transfer them onto arbitrary substrates through instantaneous etching of metal layers. We also demonstrated the applications of the large-area graphene films for the batch fabrication of field-effect transistor (FET) arrays and stretchable strain gauges showing extraordinary performances. Transistors showed the hole and electron mobilities of the device of 1,100 cm2/Vs and 550 cm2/Vs at drain bias of -0.75V, respectively. The piezo-resistance gauge …
We report the synthesis of SrMnO$_{3-δ}$F$_{γ}$ perovskite oxyfluoride thin films using a vapor transport method to fluorinate as-grown SrMnO$_{2.5}$ epitaxial thin films. The influence of the fluoropolymer, which acts as a fluorine vapor source, was investigated by utilizing polyvinyl fluoride (PVF), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in the reaction. The same process was carried out with polyethylene (PE) to isolate the role of carbon in the vapor transport process. The F distribution was probed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, which confirmed the incorpo…
Few-layer graphene (FLG) is grown on copper and nickel substrates at high rates using a novel flame synthesis method in open-atmosphere environments. Transmittance and resistance properties of the transferred films are similar to those grown by other methods, but the concentration of oxygen, as assessed by XPS, is actually less than that for CVD-grown graphene under near vacuum conditions. The method involves utilizing a multi-element inverse-diffusion-flame burner, where post-flame species and temperatures are radially-uniform upon deposition at a substrate. Advantages of the flame synthesis …
Graphene has been attracting great interest because of its distinctive band structure and physical properties. Today, graphene is limited to small sizes because it is produced mostly by exfoliating graphite. We grew large-area graphene films of the order of centimeters on copper substrates by chemical vapor deposition using methane. The films are predominantly single layer graphene with a small percentage (less than 5%) of the area having few layers, and are continuous across copper surface steps and grain boundaries. The low solubility of carbon in copper appears to help make this growth proc…
In situ growth of pyrochlore iridate thin films has been a long-standing challenge due to the low reactivity of Ir at low temperatures and the vaporization of volatile gas species such as IrO3(g) and IrO2(g) at high temperatures and high oxygen partial pressures. To address this challenge, we combine thermodynamic analysis of the Pr-Ir-O2 system with experimental results from the conventional physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique of co-sputtering. Our results indicate that only high growth temperatures yield films with crystallinity sufficient for utilizing and tailoring the desired topolo…
We report the synthesis of colloidal Mn2+-doped ZnO (Mn2+:ZnO) quantum dots and the preparation of room-temperature ferromagnetic nanocrystalline thin films. Mn2+:ZnO nanocrystals were prepared by a hydrolysis and condensation reaction in DMSO under atmospheric conditions. Synthesis was monitored by electronic absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Zn(OAc)2 was found to strongly inhibit oxidation of Mn2+ by O2, allowing the synthesis of Mn2+:ZnO to be performed aerobically. Mn2+ ions were removed from the surfaces of as-prepared nanocrystals using dodecylamine to …

Fe+-irradiated C60 thin film was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography and laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. We investigated the performance of the deceleration system for using a Fe+ beam with low energy. In addition, we attempted to isolate the synthesized material from a Fe+-irradiated C60 thin film by high performance liquid chromatography.

Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) provides a successful route to grow inorganic materials into polymeric films by penetrating of gaseous precursors into the polymer, both in order to enhance the functional properties of the polymer creating an organic-inorganic hybrid material, and to fabricate inorganic nanostructures when infiltrating in patterned polymer films or in selfassembled block copolymers. A SIS process consists in a controlled sequence of metal organic precursor and co-reactant vapor exposure cycles of the polymer films in an atomic layer deposition (ALD) reactor. In this wor…

Group-10 transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are rising in prominence within the highly innovative field of 2D materials. While PtS2 has been investigated for potential electronic applications, due to its high charge-carrier mobility and strong layer-dependent bandgap, it has proven to be one of the more difficult TMDs to synthesise. In contrast to most TMDs, Pt has a significantly more stable monosulfide, the non-layered PtS. The existence of two stable platinum sulfides, sometimes within the same sample, has resulted in much confusion between the materials in the literature. Neither of t…
Strain engineering with different substrate facets is promising for tuning functional properties of thin film perovskite oxides. By choice of facet, different surface symmetries and chemical bond directions for epitaxial interfaces can be tailored. Here, preparation of well-defined pseudo-cubic (111)-oriented orthorhombic substrates of DyScO3 , GdScO3 , and NdGaO3 is reported. The choice of orthorhombic facet, (011)o or (101)o , both corresponding to pseudo-cubic (111)pc , gives vicinal surfaces with single or double (111pc layer terrace step heights, respectively, impacting subsequent thin fi…

Recently was reported a novel compound between rhenium and nitrogen, announced with ReN2 composition. This compound was synthesized by the high temperature and high pressure method. We found that the diffraction peaks of this compound are in agreement with the x-ray pattern of a rhenium-nitrogen film, under the assumption that the film is oriented on the substrate. The film was prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering, at room temperature, and deposited on a silicon wafer. From the analysis of the diffractograms it could be concluded that both materials share the same structure. By density fu…
High spin (S=3/2) organic triradicals may offer enhanced properties with respect to several emerging technologies, but those synthesized to date typically exhibit small doublet quartet energy gaps and/or possess limited thermal stability and processability. We report a quartet ground state triradical 3, synthesized by a Pd(0)-catalyzed radical-radical cross-coupling reaction, which possesses two doublet-quartet energy gaps, DeltaEDQ ~ 0.2-0.3 kcal mol-1 and DealtaEDQ2 ~ 1.2-1.8 kcal mol-1. The triradical has a 70+% population of the quartet ground state at room temperature, and good thermal st…
This study aims towards a systematic reciprocity of the tunable synthesis parameters - partial pressure of N$_2$ gas, ion energy (\Ei) and Ti interface in TiN thin film samples deposited using ion beam sputtering at ambient temperature (300\,K). At the optimum partial pressure of N$_2$ gas, samples were prepared with or without Ti interface at \Ei~=~1.0 or 0.5\,keV. They were characterized using x-ray reflectivity (XRR) to deduce thickness, roughness and density. The roughness of TiN thin films was found to be below 1\,nm, when deposited at the lower \Ei~of 0.5\,keV and when interfaced with a …
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been a core constituent of 2D material research throughout the last decade. Over this time, research focus has progressively shifted from synthesis and fundamental investigations, to exploring their properties for applied research such as electrochemical applications and integration in electrical devices. Due to the rapid pace of development, priority is often given to application-oriented aspects while careful characterisation and analysis of the TMD materials themselves is occasionally neglected. This can be particularly evident for characterisati…

We have investigated the thermodynamic and kinetic barriers involved in the synthesis of MgB2 films. This work refines our initial conjectures predicting optimal MgB2 thin film growth conditions as a consequence of the unusually large kinetic barrier to MgB2 decomposition. The small Mg sticking coefficient at temperatures greater than 300C prevents high temperature synthesis with traditional vacuum growth methods. However, as a result of the large kinetic barrier to MgB2 decomposition, in-situ thermal processing can be used to enhance the crystallinity and the superconductivity of MgB2 films. …
