We obtain $D_k$ ALF gravitational instantons by a gluing construction which captures, in a precise and explicit fashion, their interpretation as non-linear superpositions of the moduli space of centred $SU(2)$ monopoles, equipped with the Atiyah-Hitchin metric, and $k$ copies of the Taub-NUT manifold. The construction proceeds from a finite set of points in euclidean space, reflection symmetric about the origin, and depends on an adiabatic parameter which is incorporated into the geometry as a fifth dimension. Using a formulation in terms of hyperKähler triples on manifolds with boundaries, we show that the constituent Atiyah-Hitchin and Taub-NUT geometries arise as boundary components of the 5-dimensional geometry as the adiabatic parameter is taken to zero.
This is the first in a series of papers in which we develop a twistor-based method of constructing hyperkaehler metrics from holomorphic functions and elliptic curves. As an application, we revisit the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold and derive in an explicit holomorphic coordinate basis closed-form formulas for, among other things, the metric, the holomorphic symplectic form and all three Kaehler potentials.
We show that the regular Slodowy slice to the sum of two semisimple adjoint orbits of $GL(n,C)$ is isomorphic to the deformation of the $D_2$-singularity if $n=2$, the Dancer deformation of the double cover of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold if $n=3$, and to the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold itself if $n=4$. For higher $n$, such slices to the sum of two orbits, each having only two distinct eigenvalues, are either empty or biholomorphic to open subsets of the Hilbert scheme of points on of one the above surfaces. In particular, these open subsets of Hilbert schemes of points carry complete hyperkähler m…
In this paper we describe the oriented Riemannian four-manifolds $M$ for which the Atiyah-Hitchin-Singer or Eells-Salamon almost complex structure on the twistor space ${\mathcal Z}$ of $M$ determines a harmonic map from ${\mathcal Z}$ into its twistor space.
The Legendre transform and its generalizations, originally found in supersymmetric sigma-models, are techniques that can be used to give constructions of hyperkahler metrics. We give a twistor space interpretation to the generalizations of the Legendre transform construction. The Atiyah-Hitchin metric on the moduli space of two monopoles is used as a detailed example.
In this note, we study submanifold geometry of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold, the double cover of the $2$-monopole moduli space. When the manifold is naturally identified as the total space of a line bundle over $S^2$, the zero section is a distinguished minimal $2$-sphere of considerable interest. In particular, there has been a conjecture by Micallef and Wolfson [Math. Ann. 295 (1993), Remark on p.262] about the uniqueness of this minimal $2$-sphere among all closed minimal $2$-surfaces. We show that this minimal $2$-sphere satisfies the "strong stability condition" proposed in our earlier wor…
We propose a construction of Skyrme fields from holonomy of the spin connection of gravitational instantons. The procedure is implemented for Atiyah-Hitchin and Taub-NUT instantons. The skyrmion resulting from the Taub-NUT is given explicitly on the space of orbits of a left translation inside the whole isometry group. The domain of the Taub-NUT skyrmion is a trivial circle bundle over the Poincare disc. The position of the skyrmion depends on the Taub-NUT mass parameter, and its topological charge is equal to two.
In this PhD thesis, we give a new geometric approach to higher Teichmüller theory. In particular we construct a geometric structure on surfaces, generalizing the complex structure, and we explore its link to Hitchin components. The construction of this structure, called higher complex structure, uses the punctual Hilbert scheme of the plane. Its moduli space admits similar properties to Hitchin's component. Given a higher complex structure, we try to canonically deform it to a flat connection. The space of such connections, called "parabolic", is obtained by imitating the Atiyah--Bott reductio…
This paper deals with moduli spaces of framed principal bundles with connections with irregular singularities over a compact Riemann surface. These spaces have been constructed by Boalch by means of an infinite-dimensional symplectic reduction. It is proved that the symplectic structure induced from the Atiyah--Bott form agrees with the one given in terms of hypercohomology. The main results of this paper adapt work of Krichever and of Hurtubise to give an interpretation of some Hitchin Hamiltonians as yielding Hamiltonian vector fields on moduli spaces of irregular connections that arise from…
In this note we address the problem of finding Abelian instantons of finite energy on the Euclidean Schwarzschild manifold. This amounts to construct self-dual L^2 harmonic 2-forms on the space. Gibbons found a non-topological L^2 harmonic form in the Taub-NUT metric, leading to Abelian instantons with continuous energy. We imitate his construction in the case of the Euclidean Schwarzschild manifold and find a non-topological self-dual L^2 harmonic 2-form on it. We show how this gives rise to Abelian instantons and identify them with SU(2)-instantons of Pontryagin number 2n^2 found by Charap a…
We give a characterisation of Atiyah's and Hitchin's transverse Hilbert schemes of points on a symplectic surface in terms of bi-Poisson structures. Furthermore, we describe the geometry of hyperkähler manifolds arising from the transverse Hilbert scheme construction, with particular attention paid to the monopole moduli spaces.
Studied are moduli spaces of self dual or anti-self dual connections on noncommutative 4-manifolds, especially deformation quantization of compact spin Riemannian 4-manifolds and their isometry groups have 2-torus subgroup. Then such moduli spaces of irreducible modules associated with highestweights of compact connected semisimple Lie groups are smooth manifolds with dimension determined by their weights. This is a generalization of Atiyah-Hitchin-Singer's classical result as well as Landi-Suijlekom's noncommutative 4-sphere case.
The construction of Atiyah, Drinfeld, Hitchin, and Manin [ADHM78] provided complete description of all instantons on Euclidean four-space. It was extended by Kronheimer and Nakajima to instantons on ALE spaces, resolutions of orbifolds $\mathbb{R}^4/Γ$ by a finite subgroup $Γ\subset SU(2).$ We consider a similar classification, in the holomorphic context, of instantons on some of the next spaces in the hierarchy, the ALF multi-Taub-NUT manifolds, showing how they tie in to the bow solutions to Nahm's equations [Che09] via the Nahm correspondence. Recently in [Nak18a] and [NT17], based on [Nak0…
This is a survey of old and new results on the problem when a compatible almost complex structure on a Riemannian manifold is a harmonic section or a harmonic map from the manifold into its twistor space. In this context, a special attention is paid to the Atiyah-Hitchin-Singer and Eells-Salamon almost complex structures on the twistor space of an oriented Riemannain four-manifold.
We construct geometric generators of the effective $S^1$-equivariant Spin- (and oriented) bordism groups with two inverted. We apply this construction to the question of which $S^1$-manifolds admit invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature. It turns out that, up to taking connected sums with several copies of the same manifold, the only obstruction to the existence of such a metric is an $\hat{A}$-genus of orbit spaces. This $\hat{A}$-genus generalizes a previous definition of Lott for orbit spaces of semi-free $S^1$-actions. As a further application of our results, we give a new proof of…
The twistor space \Z of an oriented Riemannian 4-manifold M admits a natural 1-parameter family of Riemannian metrics h_t compatible with the almost complex structures J_1 and J_2 introduced, respectively, by Atiyah, Hitchin and Singer, and Eells and Salamon. In this paper we compute the first Chern form of the almost Hermitian manifold (\Z,h_t,J_n), n=1,2 and find the geometric conditions on M under which the curvature of its Chern connection D^n is of type (1,1). We also describe the twistor spaces of constant holomorphic sectional curvature with respect to D^n and show that the Nijenhuis te…
This thesis contains work which appeared in several papers. Additionally to the results in the papers it contains a detailed introduction and some further proofs and remarks. The dissertation gives a description of the topology and symplectic and algebraic geometry of Hitchin's hyperkaehler moduli space M of rank 2 Higgs bundles with fixed determinant of odd degree over a fixed Riemann surface. After the long introduction it describes a compactification of M in great detail, using symplectic cutting (math.AG/9804083). Examining the downward Morse flow of a natural circle action on M it shows t…
In this paper we propose and investigate in full generality new notions of (continuous, non-isometric) symmetry on hyperkähler spaces. These can be grouped into two categories, corresponding to the two basic types of continuous hyperkähler isometries which they deform: tri-Hamiltonian isometries, on one hand, and rotational isometries, on the other. The first category of deformations gives rise to Killing spinors and generate what are known as hidden hyperkähler symmetries. The second category gives rise to hyperholomorphic line bundles over the hyperkähler manifolds on which they are defined …
We study the homotopy type of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on high-dimensional compact spin manifolds. Hitchin used the fact that there are no harmonic spinors on a manifold with positive scalar curvature to construct a secondary index map from the space of positive scalar metrics to a suitable space from the real $K$-theory spectrum. Our main results concern the nontriviality of this map. We prove that for $2n \geq 6$, the natural $KO$-orientation from the infinite loop space of the Madsen--Tillmann--Weiss spectrum factors (up to homotopy) through the space of metrics of …
