A Hamilton decomposition of a graph is a partitioning of its edge set into disjoint spanning cycles. The existence of such decompositions is known for all hypercubes of even dimension $2n$. We give a decomposition for the case $n = 2^a3^b$ that is highly symmetric in the sense that every cycle can be derived from every other cycle just by permuting the axes. We conjecture that a similar decomposition exists for every n.
In 1979, Shearer and Kleitman conjectured that there exist $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor+1$ orthogonal chain decompositions of the hypercube $Q_n$, and constructed two orthogonal chain decompositions. In this paper, we make the first non-trivial progress on this conjecture since by constructing three orthogonal chain decompositions of $Q_n$ for $n$ large enough. To do this, we introduce the notion of "almost orthogonal symmetric chain decompositions". We explicitly describe three such decompositions of $Q_5$ and $Q_7$, and describe conditions which allow us to decompose products of hypercubes into $k$ …
There are different concepts regarding to tree decomposition of a graph $G$. For the Hypercube $Q_n$, these concepts have been shown to have many applications. But some diverse papers on this subject make it difficult to follow what is precisely known. In this note first we will mention some known results on the tree decomposition of hypercubes and then introduce new explicit constructions for the previously known and unknown cases.
A Hamiltonian embedding is an embedding of a graph $G$ such that the boundary of each face is a Hamiltonian cycle of $G$. It is shown that the hypercube graph $Q_n$ admits such an embedding on an orientable surface when $n$ is a power of 2. Basic necessary conditions on Hamiltonian embeddings for $Q_n$ and conjectures are made about other values of $n$.
For any positive integer $k \geq 3,$ the sunlet graph of order $2k$, denoted by $L_{2k},$ is the graph obtained by adding a pendant edge to each vertex of a cycle of length $k.$ In this paper, we prove that the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an $L_{16}$-decomposition of the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$ is $n = 4$ or $n \geq 6.$ Also, we prove that for any integer $m \geq 2,$ $Q_{mn}$ has an $L_{2k}$-decomposition if $Q_{n}$ has a $C_k$-decomposition.
The balanced hypercube $BH_{n}$, a variant of the hypercube, is a novel interconnection network for massive parallel systems. It is known that the balanced hypercube remains Hamiltonian after deleting at most $4n-5$ faulty edges if each vertex is incident with at least two edges in the resulting graph for all $n\geq2$. In this paper, we show that there exists a fault-free Hamiltonian cycle in $BH_{n}$ for $n\ge 2$ with $\left | F \right |\le 5n-7$ if the degree of every vertex in $BH_{n}-F$ is at least two and there exists no $f_{4}$-cycles in $BH_{n}-F$, which improves some known results.
Many authors have investigated edge decompositions of graphs by the edge sets of isomorphic copies of special subgraphs. For $q$- dimensional hypercubes $Q_q$ various researchers have done this for cer- tain trees, paths, and cycles. In this paper we shall say that "$H$ divides $G$" if $E(G)$ is the disjoint union of $\{fE(H_i) | H_i \simeq H\}$. Our main result is that for $q$ odd and $q < 2^{32}$, the path of length $m$, $P_m$, divides $Q_q$ if and only if $m \leq q$ and $m | (q \times 2^{q-1})$.
The balanced hypercube, $BH_n$, is a variant of hypercube $Q_n$. Zhou et al. [Inform. Sci. 300 (2015) 20-27] proposed an interesting problem that whether there is a fault-free Hamiltonian cycle in $BH_n$ with each vertex incident to at least two fault-free edges. In this paper, we consider this problem and show that each fault-free edge lies on a fault-free Hamiltonian cycle in $BH_n$ after no more than $4n-5$ faulty edges occur if each vertex is incident with at least two fault-free edges for all $n\ge 2$. Our result is optimal with respect to the maximum number of tolerated edge faults.
Let $s_d(n)$ be the number of distinct decompositions of the $d$-dimensional hypercube with $n$ rectangular regions that can be obtained via a sequence of splitting operations. We prove that the generating series $y = \sum_{n \geq 1} s_d(n)x^n$ satisfies the functional equation $x = \sum_{n\geq 1} μ_d(n)y^n$, where $μ_d(n)$ is the $d$-fold Dirichlet convolution of the Möbius function. This generalizes a recent result by Goulden et al., and shows that $s_1(n)$ also gives the number of natural exact covering systems of $\mZ$ with $n$ residual classes. We also prove an asymptotic formula for $s_d…
If $H$ is (or is isomorphic to) a subgraph of $G$, $H$ is said to {\it divide} $G$ if there is an edge-decomposition of $G$ by copies of $E(H)$, the edge set of $H$. A more restrictive version of this is when there is a subgroup ${\cal H}$ of {\rm Aut} $(G)$, the automorphism group of $G$, such that the copies of $E(H)$ are the translates of $E(H)$ by the elements of ${\cal H}$. In a paper by the second author, this situation was described by saying that $H$, or more precisely $E(H)$, is a {\it fundamental} set for $G$. Many authors have studied the notion of divisibility for various graphs, a…
Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer, and let $i\in\{0,...,n-1\}$. An $i$-th dimension edge in the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$ is an edge ${v_1}{v_2}$ such that $v_1,v_2$ differ just at their $i$-th entries. The parity of an $i$-th dimension edge $\edg{v_1}{v_2}$ is the number of 1's modulus 2 of any of its vertex ignoring the $i$-th entry. We prove that the number of $i$-th dimension edges appearing in a given Hamiltonian cycle of $Q_n$ with parity zero coincides with the number of edges with parity one. As an application of this result it is introduced and explored the conjecture of the inscribed…
We consider edge decompositions of the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$ into isomorphic copies of a given graph $H$. While a number of results are known about decomposing $Q_n$ into graphs from various classes, the simplest cases of paths and cycles of a given length are far from being understood. A conjecture of Erde asserts that if $n$ is even, $\ell < 2^n$ and $\ell$ divides the number of edges of $Q_n$, then the path of length $\ell$ decomposes $Q_n$. Tapadia et al.\ proved that any path of length $2^mn$, where $2^m<n$, satisfying these conditions decomposes $Q_n$. Here, we make progress to…
We study Hamiltonicity in random subgraphs of the hypercube $\mathcal{Q}^n$. Our first main theorem is an optimal hitting time result. Consider the random process which includes the edges of $\mathcal{Q}^n$ according to a uniformly chosen random ordering. Then, with high probability, as soon as the graph produced by this process has minimum degree $2k$, it contains $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles, for any fixed $k\in\mathbb{N}$. Secondly, we obtain a perturbation result: if $H\subseteq\mathcal{Q}^n$ satisfies $δ(H)\geqαn$ with $α>0$ fixed and we consider a random binomial subgraph $\mathcal{…
Aims: Try to prove the $n$-dimensional balanced hypercube $BH_n$ is $(2n-2)$-fault-tolerant-prescribed hamiltonian laceability. Methods: Prove it by induction on $n$. It is known that the assertation holds for $n\in\{1,2\}$. Assume it holds for $n-1$ and prove it holds for $n$, where $n\geq 3$. If there are $2n-3$ faulty links and they are all incident with a common node, then we choose some dimension such that there is one or two faulty links and no prescribed link in this dimension; Otherwise, we choose some dimension such that the total number of faulty links and prescribed links does not e…
We consider decompositions of topes of the oriented matroid realizable as the arrangement of coordinate hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^{2^t}$, with respect to a distinguished symmetric $2\cdot 2^t$-cycle in its hypercube graph of topes $\boldsymbol{H}(2^t,2)$. We seek interpretations of such decompositions in the context of subset families on the ground set $E_t:=\{1,\ldots,t\}$ and of the families of their blocking sets, in the context of clutters on $E_t$ and of their blockers.
We present statistics on the decompositions (with respect to a distinguished symmetric 2t-cycle) of vertices of the hypercube graph, whose negative parts are covered by two subsets of the ground set {1,...,t} of the corresponding oriented matroid.
We employ general parabolic recursion methods to demonstrate the recently devised hypercube formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $S_n$, and establish its generalization to the full setting of a finite Coxeter system through algebraic proof. We introduce procedures for positive decompositions of $q$-derived Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials within this setting, that utilize classical Hecke algebra positivity phenomena of Dyer-Lehrer and Grojnowski-Haiman. This leads to a distinct algorithmic approach to the subject, based on induction from a parabolic subgroup. We propose suitable weak variants…
We present statistics on the decompositions (with respect to a distinguished symmetric 2t-cycle) of vertices of the hypercube graph, whose negative parts are regarded as disjoint unions of two subsets of the ground set {1,...,t} of the corresponding oriented matroid.
A perfect matching reciprocity method for embedding multiple hypercubes in an augmented cube: Applications to Hamiltonian decomposition and fault-tolerant Hamiltonicity
If V is the vertex sequence of a symmetric 2t-cycle in the hypercube graph with the vertices {1,-1}^t, then for any vertex T of the graph there exists a unique inclusion-minimal subset of V such that T is the sum of its elements. We present a simple combinatorial statistic on decompositions of vertices of the hypercube graphs with respect to symmetric cycles and describe their basic metric properties.
Ruskey and Savage asked the following question: Does every matching of $Q_{n}$ for $n\geq2$ extend to a Hamiltonian cycle of $Q_{n}$? J. Fink showed that the question is true for every perfect matching, and solved the Kreweras' conjecture. In this paper we consider the question in hypercubes with faulty edges. We show that every matching $M$ of at most $2n-1$ edges can be extended to a Hamiltonian cycle of $Q_{n}$ for $n\geq2$. Moreover, we can prove that when $n\geq4$ and $M$ is nonempty this result still holds even if $Q_{n}$ has at most $n-1-\lceil\frac{|M|}{2}\rceil$ faulty edges with one …
We consider hypercubes with pairwise disjoint faulty edges. An $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$ is an undirected graph with $2^n$ nodes, each labeled with a distinct binary strings of length $n$. The parity of the vertex is 0 if the number of ones in its labels is even, and is 1 if the number of ones is odd. Two vertices $a$ and $b$ are connected by the edge iff $a$ and $b$ differ in one position. If $a$ and $b$ differ in position $i$, then we say that the edge $(a,b)$ goes in direction $i$ and we define the parity of the edge as the parity of the end with 0 on the position $i$. It was already …
Szepietowski [A. Szepietowski, Hamiltonian cycles in hypercubes with $2n-4$ faulty edges, Information Sciences, 215 (2012) 75--82] observed that the hypercube $Q_n$ is not Hamiltonian if it contains a trap disconnected halfway. A proper subgraph $T$ is disconnected halfway if at least half of its nodes have parity 0 (or 1, resp.) and the edges joining all nodes of parity 0 (or 1, resp.) in $T$ with nodes outside $T$, are faulty. The simplest examples of such traps are: (1) a vertex with $n-1$ incident faulty edges, or (2) a cycle $(u,v,w,x)$, where all edges going out of the cycle from $u$ and…
The balanced hypercube, $BH_n$, is a variant of hypercube $Q_n$. R.X. Hao et al. $(2014)$ \cite{R.X.Hao} showed that there exists a fault-free Hamiltonian path between any two adjacent vertices in $BH_n$ with $(2n-2)$ faulty edges. D.Q. Cheng et al. $(2015)$ \cite{Dongqincheng2} proved that $BH_n$ is $6$-edge-bipancyclic after $(2n-3)$ faulty edges occur for all $n\ge2$. In this paper, we improve these two results by demonstrating that $BH_n$ is $6$-edge-bipancyclic even when there exist $(2n-2)$ faulty edges for all $n\ge2$. Our result is optimal with respect to the maximum number of tolerate…
Let $F_{v}$ (resp. $F_e$) be the set of faulty vertices (resp. faulty edges) in the $n$-dimensional balanced hypercube $BH_n$. Fault-tolerant Hamiltonian laceability in $BH_n$ with at most $2n-2$ faulty edges is obtained in [Inform. Sci. 300 (2015) 20--27]. The existence of edge-Hamiltonian cycles in $BH_n-F_e$ for $|F_e|\leq 2n-2$ are gotten in [Appl. Math. Comput. 244 (2014) 447--456]. Up to now, almost all results about fault-tolerance in $BH_n$ with only faulty vertices or only faulty edges. In this paper, we consider fault-tolerant cycle embedding of $BH_n$ with both faulty vertices and f…
A graph associahedron is a polytope dual to a simplicial complex whose elements are induced connected subgraphs called tubes. Graph associahedra generalize permutahedra, associahedra, and cyclohedra, and therefore are of great interest to those who study Coxeter combinatorics. This thesis characterizes nested complexes of simplicial complexes, which we call $Δ$-nested complexes. From here, we can define P-nestohedra by truncating simple polyhedra, and in more specificity define P-graph associahedra, which are realized by repeated truncation of faces of simple polyhedra in accordance with tubes…
The $g$-component edge connectivity $cλ_g(G)$ of a non-complete graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges whose deletion results in a graph with at least $g$ components. In this paper, we determine the component edge connectivity of the folded hypercube $cλ_{g+1}(FQ_{n})=(n+1)g-(\sum\limits_{i=0}^{s}t_i2^{t_i-1}+\sum\limits_{i=0}^{s} i\cdot 2^{t_i})$ for $g\leq 2^{[\frac{n+1}2]}$ and $n\geq 5$, where $g$ be a positive integer and $g=\sum\limits_{i=0}^{s}2^{t_i}$ be the decomposition of $g$ such that $t_0=[\log_{2}{g}],$ and $t_i=[\log_2({g-\sum\limits_{r=0}^{i-1}2^{t_r}})]$ for $i\geq 1$.
It is known that the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n,$ for $n$ even, has a decomposition into $k$-cycles for $k=n, 2n,$ $2^l$ with $2 \leq l \leq n.$ In this paper, we prove that $Q_n$ has a decomposition into $2^mn$-cycles for $n \geq 2^m.$ As an immediate consequence of this result, we get path decompositions of $Q_n$ as well. This gives a partial solution to a conjecture posed by Ramras and also, it solves some special cases of a conjecture due to Erde.
Among the classical models for interconnection networks are hypercubes and Fibonacci cubes. Fibonacci cubes are induced subgraphs of hypercubes obtained by restricting the vertex set to those binary strings which do not contain consecutive 1s, counted by Fibonacci numbers. Another set of binary strings which are counted by Fibonacci numbers are those with a restriction on the runlengths. Induced subgraphs of the hypercube on the latter strings as vertices define Fibonacci-run graphs. They have the same number of vertices as Fibonacci cubes, but fewer edges and different connectivity properties…
We consider the problem of constructing a cyclic listing of all bitstrings of length $2n+1$ with Hamming weights in the interval $[n+1-\ell,n+\ell]$, where $1\leq \ell\leq n+1$, by flipping a single bit in each step. This is a far-ranging generalization of the well-known middle two levels problem (the case $\ell=1$). We provide a solution for the case $\ell=2$, and we solve a relaxed version of the problem for general values of $\ell$, by constructing cycle factors for those instances. The proof of the first result uses the lexical matchings introduced by Kierstead and Trotter, which we genera…
The spined cube $SQ_n$ is a variant of the hypercube $Q_n$, introduced by Zhou et al. in [Information Processing Letters 111 (2011) 561-567] as an interconnection network for parallel computing. A graph $\G$ is an $m$-Cayley graph if its automorphism group $\Aut(\G)$ has a semiregular subgroup acting on the vertex set with $m$ orbits, and is a Caley graph if it is a 1-Cayley graph. It is well-known that $Q_n$ is a Cayley graph of an elementary abelian 2-group $\mz_2^n$ of order $2^n$. In this paper, we prove that $SQ_n$ is a 4-Cayley graph of $\mz_2^{n-2}$ when $n\geq6$, and is a $\lfloor n/2\…
A graph is said to exhibit perfect state transfer (PST) if one of its corresponding Hamiltonian matrices, which are based on the vertex-edge structure of the graph, gives rise to PST in a quantum information-theoretic context, namely with respect to inter-qubit interactions of a quantum system. We perform various perturbations to the hypercube graph---a graph that is known to exhibit PST---to create graphs that maintain many of the same properties of the hypercube, including PST as well as the distance for which PST occurs. We show that the sensitivity with respect to readout time errors remai…
In contrast with Kotzig's result that the line graph of a $3$-regular graph $X$ is Hamilton decomposable if and only if $X$ is Hamiltonian, we show that for each integer $k\geq 4$ there exists a simple non-Hamiltonian $k$-regular graph whose line graph has a Hamilton decomposition. We also answer a question of Jackson by showing that for each integer $k\geq 3$ there exists a simple connected $k$-regular graph with no separating transitions whose line graph has no Hamilton decomposition.
We prove that any one-ended, locally finite Cayley graph with non-torsion generators admits a decomposition into edge-disjoint Hamiltonian (i.e. spanning) double-rays. In particular, the $n$-dimensional grid $\mathbb{Z}^n$ admits a decomposition into $n$ edge-disjoint Hamiltonian double-rays for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$.
A Hamiltonian decomposition of $G$ is a partition of its edge set into disjoint Hamilton cycles. Manikandan and Paulraja conjectured that if $G$ and $H$ are Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graphs with at least one of them is nonbipartite, then their tensor product is Hamilton cycle decomposable. In this paper, we have proved that, if $G$ is a Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graph with certain properties and $H$ is a Hamilton cycle decomposable multigraph, then their tensor product is Hamilton cycle decomposable. In particular, tensor products of certain sparse Hamilton cycle decomp…
A Hamilton cycle in a graph $Γ$ is a cycle passing through every vertex of $Γ$. A Hamiltonian decomposition of $Γ$ is a partition of its edge set into disjoint Hamilton cycles. One of the oldest results in graph theory is Walecki's theorem from the 19th century, showing that a complete graph $K_n$ on an odd number of vertices $n$ has a Hamiltonian decomposition. This result was recently greatly extended by Kühn and Osthus. They proved that every $r$-regular $n$-vertex graph $Γ$ with even degree $r=cn$ for some fixed $c>1/2$ has a Hamiltonian decomposition, provided $n=n(c)$ is sufficiently lar…
A Hamilton cycle in a directed graph $G$ is a cycle that passes through every vertex of $G$. A Hamiltonian decomposition of $G$ is a partition of its edge set into disjoint Hamilton cycles. In the late $60$s Kelly conjectured that every regular tournament has a Hamilton decomposition. This conjecture was recently settled by Kühn and Osthus, who proved more generally that every $r$-regular $n$-vertex oriented graph $G$ (without antiparallel edges) with $r=cn$ for some fixed $c>3/8$ has a Hamiltonian decomposition, provided $n=n(c)$ is sufficiently large. In this paper we address the natural que…
It is proved that if a graph is regular of even degree and contains a Hamilton cycle, or regular of odd degree and contains a Hamiltonian $3$-factor, then its line graph is Hamilton decomposable. This result partially extends Kotzig's result that a $3$-regular graph is Hamiltonian if and only if its line graph is Hamilton decomposable, and proves the conjecture of Bermond that the line graph of a Hamilton decomposable graph is Hamilton decomposable.
We use $K^*_n$ to denote the bidirected complete graph on $n$ vertices. A nomadic Hamiltonian decomposition of $K^*_n$ is a Hamiltonian decomposition, with the additional property that ``nomads'' walk along the Hamiltonian cycles (moving one vertex per time step) without colliding. A nomadic near-Hamiltonian decomposition is defined similarly, except that the cycles in the decomposition have length $n-1$, rather than length $n$. J.A. Bondy asked whether these decompositions of $K^*_n$ exist for all $n$. We show that $K^*_n$ admits a nomadic near-Hamiltonian decomposition when $n\not\equiv 2\bm…
We show that if pn >> log n, the binomial random graph G_{n,p} has an approximate Hamilton decomposition. More precisely, we show that in this range G_{n,p} contains a set of edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles covering almost all of its edges. This is best possible in the sense that the condition that pn >> log n is necessary.
We show that every sufficiently large r-regular digraph G which has linear degree and is a robust outexpander has an approximate decomposition into edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles, i.e. G contains a set of r-o(r) edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. Here G is a robust outexpander if for every set S which is not too small and not too large, the `robust' outneighbourhood of S is a little larger than S. This generalises a result of Kühn, Osthus and Treglown on approximate Hamilton decompositions of dense regular oriented graphs. It also generalises a result of Frieze and Krivelevich on approximate Hamilt…
We consider a Hamiltonian decomposition problem of partitioning a regular graph into edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles. A sufficient condition for vertex adjacency in the 1-skeleton of the traveling salesperson polytope can be formulated as the Hamiltonian decomposition problem in a 4-regular multigraph. We introduce a heuristic general variable neighborhood search algorithm for this problem based on finding a vertex-disjoint cycle cover of the multigraph through reduction to perfect matching and several cycle merging operations. The algorithm has a one-sided error: the answer "not adjacent" is…
A regular bipartite tournament is an orientation of a complete balanced bipartite graph $K_{2n,2n}$ where every vertex has its in- and outdegree both equal to $n$. In 1981, Jackson conjectured that any regular bipartite tournament can be decomposed into Hamilton cycles. We prove this conjecture for all sufficiently large bipartite tournaments. Along the way, we also prove several further results, including a conjecture of Liebenau and Pehova on Hamilton decompositions of dense bipartite digraphs.
It is shown that there are infinitely many connected vertex-transitive graphs that have no Hamilton decomposition, including infinitely many Cayley graphs of valency 6, and including Cayley graphs of arbitrarily large valency.
We prove that a complete multipartite graph $K$ with $n>1$ vertices and $m$ edges can be decomposed into edge-disjoint Hamilton paths if and only if $\frac m{n-1}$ is an integer and the maximum degree of $K$ is at most $\frac {2m}{n-1}$.
