Let $G$ be a graph of minimum degree at least $k$ and let $G_p$ be the random subgraph of $G$ obtained by keeping each edge independently with probability $p$. We are interested in the size of the largest complete minor that $G_p$ contains when $p = \frac{1+\varepsilon}{k}$ with $\varepsilon >0$. We show that with high probability $G_p$ contains a complete minor of order $\tildeΩ(\sqrt{k})$, where the $\sim$ hides a polylogarithmic factor. Furthermore, in the case where the order of $G$ is also bounded above by a constant multiple of $k$, we show that this polylogarithmic term can be removed, giving a tight bound.
In this paper, we consider a structural and geometric property of graphs, namely the presence of large expanders. The problem of finding such structures was first considered by Krivelevich [SIAM J. Disc. Math. 32 1 (2018)]. Here, we show that the problem of finding a large induced subgraph that is an expander can be reduced to the simpler problem of finding a topological minor that is an expander. Our proof is constructive, which is helpful in an algorithmic setting. We also show that every large subgraph of an expander graph contains a large subgraph which is itself an expander.
Archdeacon (1987) proved that graphs embeddable on a fixed surface can be $3$-coloured so that each colour class induces a subgraph of bounded maximum degree. Edwards, Kang, Kim, Oum and Seymour (2015) proved that graphs with no $K_{t+1}$-minor can be $t$-coloured so that each colour class induces a subgraph of bounded maximum degree. We prove a common generalisation of these theorems with a weaker assumption about excluded subgraphs. This result leads to new defective colouring results for several graph classes, including graphs with linear crossing number, graphs with given thickness (with r…
We prove that for every graph $H$, if a graph $G$ has no (odd) $H$ minor, then its vertex set $V(G)$ can be partitioned into three sets $X_1$, $X_2$, $X_3$ such that for each~$i$, the subgraph induced on $X_i$ has no component of size larger than a function of~$H$ and the maximum degree of~$G$. This improves a previous result of Alon, Ding, Oporowski and Vertigan~(2003) stating that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into four such sets if $G$ has no $H$ minor. Our theorem generalizes a result of Esperet and Joret~(2014), who proved it for graphs embeddable on a fixed surface and asked whether it is tr…
Given graphs $G$ and $H$, we propose a method to implicitly enumerate topological-minor-embeddings of $H$ in $G$ using decision diagrams. We show a useful application of our method to enumerating subgraphs characterized by forbidden topological minors, that is, planar, outerplanar, series-parallel, and cactus subgraphs. Computational experiments show that our method can find all planar subgraphs in a given graph at most five orders of magnitude faster than a naive backtracking-based method.
The classical Hadwiger conjecture dating back to 1940's states that any graph of chromatic number at least $r$ has the clique of order $r$ as a minor. Hadwiger's conjecture is an example of a well studied class of problems asking how large a clique minor one can guarantee in a graph with certain restrictions. One problem of this type asks what is the largest size of a clique minor in a graph on $n$ vertices of independence number $α(G)$ at most $r$. If true Hadwiger's conjecture would imply the existence of a clique minor of order $n/α(G)$. Results of Kuhn and Osthus and Krivelevich and Sudako…
We prove that every connected graph $G$ with $m$ edges contains a set $X$ of at most $\frac{3}{16}(m + 1)$ vertices such that $G-X$ has no $K_4$ minor, or equivalently, has treewidth at most $2$. This bound is best possible. Connectivity is essential: If $G$ is not connected then only a bound of $\frac{1}{5}m$ can be guaranteed.
A graph $H$ is an induced minor of a graph $G$ if it can be obtained from an induced subgraph of $G$ by contracting edges. Otherwise, $G$ is said to be $H$-induced minor-free. Robin Thomas showed that $K_4$-induced minor-free graphs are well-quasi-ordered by induced minors [Graphs without $K_4$ and well-quasi-ordering, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 38(3):240 -- 247, 1985]. We provide a dichotomy theorem for $H$-induced minor-free graphs and show that the class of $H$-induced minor-free graphs is well-quasi-ordered by the induced minor relation if and only if $H$ is an induced mino…
Analogous to the case of the binomial random graph $G(d+1,p)$, it is known that the behaviour of a random subgraph of a $d$-dimensional hypercube, where we include each edge independently with probability $p$, which we denote by $Q^d_p$, undergoes a phase transition around the critical value of $p=\frac{1}{d}$. More precisely, standard arguments show that significantly below this value of $p$, with probability tending to one as $d \to \infty$ (whp for short) all components of this graph have order $O(d)$, whereas Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi showed that significantly above this value, in the \e…
The Hadwiger number $h(G)$ is the order of the largest complete minor in $G$. Does sufficient Hadwiger number imply a minor with additional properties? In [2], Geelen et al showed $h(G)\geq (1+o(1))ct\sqrt{\ln t}$ implies $G$ has a bipartite subgraph with Hadwiger number at least $t$, for some explicit $c\sim 1.276\dotsc$. We improve this to $h(G) \geq (1+o(1))t\sqrt{\log_2 t}$, and provide a construction showing this is tight. We also derive improved bounds for the topological minor variant of this problem.
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a class of graphs that is closed under taking subgraphs. We prove that if for some fixed $0<δ\le 1$, every $n$-vertex graph of $\mathcal{C}$ has a balanced separator of order $O(n^{1-δ})$, then any depth-$k$ minor (i.e. minor obtained by contracting disjoint subgraphs of radius at most $k$) of a graph in $\mathcal{C}$ has average degree $O\big((k \text{ polylog }k)^{1/δ}\big)$. This confirms a conjecture of Dvořák and Norin.
A graph $G$ is $H$-free, if it contains no $H$ as a subgraph. A graph is said to be \emph{$H$-minor free}, if it does not contain $H$ as a minor. In recent years, Nikiforov asked that what is the maximum spectral radius of an $H$-free graph of order $n$? In this paper, we consider about some Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problems on bipartite graphs. In 2015, Zhai, Lin and Gong proved that if $G$ is a bipartite graph with order $n \geq 2k+2$ and $ρ(G)\geq ρ(K_{k,n-k})$, then $G$ contains a $C_{2k+2}$ unless $G \cong K_{k,n-k}$ [Linear Algebra Appl. 471 (2015)]. Firstly, we give a new and more sim…
For a graph G, let h(G) denote the largest k such that G has k pairwise disjoint pairwise adjacent connected nonempty subgraphs, and let s(G) denote the largest k such that G has k pairwise disjoint pairwise adjacent connected subgraphs of size 1 or 2. Hadwiger's conjecture states that h(G) is at least c(G), where c(G) is the chromatic number of G. Seymour conjectured that s(G) is at least |V(G)|/2 for all graphs without antitriangles, i. e. three pairwise nonadjacent vertices. Here we concentrate on graphs G with exactly one c(G)-coloring. We prove generalizations of (i) if c(G) is at most 6 …
The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the smallest $k$ for which it admits a $k$-coloring where every color class induces an acyclic subgraph. Inspired by Hadwiger's conjecture for undirected graphs, several groups of authors have recently studied the containment of directed graph minors in digraphs with given dichromatic number. In this short note we improve several of the existing bounds and prove almost linear bounds by reducing the problem to a recent result of Postle on Hadwiger's conjecture.
Huynh et al. recently showed that a countable graph $G$ which contains every countable planar graph as a subgraph must contain arbitrarily large finite complete graphs as topological minors, and an infinite complete graph as a minor. We strengthen this result by showing that the same conclusion holds, if $G$ contains every countable planar graph as a topological minor. In particular, there is no countable planar graph containing every countable planar graph as a topological minor, answering a question by Diestel and Kühn. Moreover, we construct a locally finite planar graph which contains ever…
In a $(1:b)$ biased Maker-Breaker game, how good a strategy is for a player can be measured by the bias range for which its rival can win, choosing an appropriate counterstrategy. Bednarska and Łuczak proved that, in the $H$-subgraph game, the uniformly random strategy for Maker is essentially optimal with high probability. Here we prove an analogous result for the $H$-graph minor game, and we study for which choices of $H$ the random strategy is within a factor of $1+o(1)$ of being optimal.
We investigate the distributions of the number of: (1) monochromatic complete subgraphs over edgewise 2-colorings of complete graphs; and (2) monochromatic arithmetic progressions over 2-colorings of intervals, as statistical Ramsey theory questions. We present convincing evidence that both distributions are very well-approximated by the Delaporte distribution.
For a graph $H$ let $c(H)$ denote the supremum of $|E(G)|/|V(G)|$ taken over all non-null graphs $G$ not containing $H$ as a minor. We show that $$c(H) \leq \frac{|V(H)|+\mathrm{comp}(H)}{2}-1,$$ when $H$ is a union of cycles, verifying conjectures of Reed and Wood, and Harvey and Wood. We derive the above result from a theorem which allows us to find two vertex disjoint subgraphs with prescribed densities in a sufficiently dense graph, which might be of independent interest.
In this note, we answer the following question of Foucaud, Krivelevich and Perarnau. What is the size of the largest $K_{r,s}$-free subgraph one can guarantee in every graph $G$ with $m$ edges? We also discuss the analogous problem for hypergraphs.
We prove a decomposition theorem for the class of triangle-free graphs that do not contain a subdivision of the complete graph on four vertices as an induced subgraph. We prove that every graph of girth at least~5 in this class is 3-colorable.

Let $G$ be a $2$-coloring of a complete graph on $n$ vertices, for sufficiently large $n$. We prove that $G$ contains at least $n^{(\frac{1}{4} - o(1))\log n}$ monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $r$, where \[ 0.3\log n < r < 0.7\log n. \] The previously known lower bound on the total number of monochromatic complete subgraphs, due to Székely was $n^{0.1576\log n}$. We also prove that $G$ contains at least $n^{\frac{1}{7} \log n} $ monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $\frac{1}{2}\log n$. If furthermore one assumes that the largest monochromatic complete subgraph in $G$ is of size $(\…
We determine how large r-partite graphs can be found in r-uniform graphs with n vertices and Cn^r edges, where C is a slowly decreasing function of n. This refines results of Erdos from 1964.
We study graphs where each edge adjacent to a vertex of small degree (7 and 9, respectively) belongs to many triangles (4 and 5, respectively) and show that these graphs contain a complete graph (K_6 and K_7, respectively) as a minor. The second case settles a problem of Nevo (Nevo, 2007). Morevover if each edge of a graph belongs to 6 triangles then the graph contains a K_8-minor or contains K_{2,2,2,2,2} as an induced subgraph. We then show applications of these structural properties to stress freeness and coloration of graphs. In particular, motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture, we prove that…
We prove that for all $r\geq2$ and c>0, every graph of order n with at least cn^{r} cliques of order r contains a complete r-partite graph with each part of size $\lfloor c^{r}\log n \rfloor.$ This result implies a concise form of the Erdős-Stone theorem.
A graph $H$ is an induced subgraph of a graph $G$ if a graph isomorphic to $H$ can be obtained from $G$ by deleting vertices. Recently, there has been significant interest in understanding the unavoidable induced subgraphs for graphs of large treewidth. Motivated by this work, we consider the analogous problem for pathwidth: what are the unavoidable induced subgraphs for graphs of large pathwidth? While resolving this question in the general setting looks challenging, we prove various results for sparse graphs. In particular, we show that every graph with bounded maximum degree and sufficientl…
Let $H$ be a planar graph. By a classical result of Robertson and Seymour, there is a function $f:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{R}$ such that for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$ and all graphs $G$, either $G$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint subgraphs each containing $H$ as a minor, or there is a subset $X$ of at most $f(k)$ vertices such that $G-X$ has no $H$-minor. We prove that this remains true with $f(k) = c k \log k$ for some constant $c=c(H)$. This bound is best possible, up to the value of $c$, and improves upon a recent result of Chekuri and Chuzhoy [STOC 2013], who established this with $f(k) = c k \log…
Let $a,b,c,d$ be four vertices in a graph $G$. A \emph{$K_4$-minor rooted} at $a,b,c,d$ consists of four pairwise-disjoint pairwise-adjacent connected subgraphs of $G$, respectively containing $a,b,c,d$. We characterise precisely when $G$ contains a $K_4$-minor rooted at $a,b,c,d$ by describing six classes of obstructions, which are the edge-maximal graphs containing no $K_4$-minor rooted at $a,b,c,d$. The following two special cases illustrate the full characterisation: (1) A 4-connected non-planar graph contains a $K_4$-minor rooted at $a,b,c,d$ for every choice of $a,b,c,d$. (2) A 3-connect…
Given an edge colouring of a graph with a set of $m$ colours, we say that the graph is (exactly) $m$-coloured if each of the colours is used. The question of finding exactly $m$-coloured complete subgraphs was first considered by Erickson in 1994; in 1999, Stacey and Weidl partially settled a conjecture made by Erickson and raised some further questions. In this paper, we shall study, for a colouring of the edges of the complete graph on $\mathbb{N}$ with exactly $k$ colours, how small the set of natural numbers $m$ for which there exists an $m$-coloured complete infinite subgraph can be. We p…
Given graphs $G$ and $H$, the generalized Turán number ${\rm ex}(G,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G$. In this paper, we obtain an asymptotic upper bound on ${\rm ex}(CT_n,C_{2l})$ for any $n \ge 3$ and $l\geq2$, where $C_{2l}$ is the cycle of length $2l$ and $CT_n$ is the complete transposition graph which is defined as the Cayley graph on the symmetric group ${\rm S}_n$ with respect to the set of all transpositions of ${\rm S}_n$.
A well-quasi-order is an order which contains no infinite decreasing sequence and no infinite collection of incomparable elements. In this paper, we consider graph classes defined by excluding one graph as contraction. More precisely, we give a complete characterization of graphs H such that the class of H-contraction-free graphs is well-quasi-ordered by the contraction relation. This result is the contraction analogue on the previous dichotomy theorems of Damsaschke [Induced subgraphs and well-quasi-ordering, Journal of Graph Theory, 14(4):427-435, 1990] on the induced subgraph relation, Ding…
In 2009, Krivelevich and Sudakov studied the existence of large complete minors in $(t,α)$-expanding graphs whenever the expansion factor $t$ becomes super-constant. In this paper, we give an extension of the results of Krivelevich and Sudakov by investigating a connection between the existence of large complete minors in graphs and good vertex expansion properties.
The graph minor structure theorem by Robertson and Seymour shows that every graph that excludes a fixed minor can be constructed by a combination of four ingredients: graphs embedded in a surface of bounded genus, a bounded number of vortices of bounded width, a bounded number of apex vertices, and the clique-sum operation. This paper studies the converse question: What is the maximum order of a complete graph minor in a graph constructed using these four ingredients? Our main result answers this question up to a constant factor.
A subgraph of an edge-coloured complete graph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colours. In 1980 Hahn conjectured that every properly edge-coloured complete graph $K_n$ has a rainbow Hamiltonian path. Although this conjecture turned out to be false, it was widely believed that such a colouring always contains a rainbow cycle of length almost $n$. In this paper, improving on several earlier results, we confirm this by proving that every properly edge-coloured $K_n$ has a rainbow cycle of length $n-O(n^{3/4})$. One of the main ingredients of our proof, which is of independent int…
We investigate the structure of isometric subgraphs of hypercubes (i.e., partial cubes) which do not contain finite convex subgraphs contractible to the 3-cube minus one vertex $Q^-_3$ (here contraction means contracting the edges corresponding to the same coordinate of the hypercube). Extending similar results for median and cellular graphs, we show that the convex hull of an isometric cycle of such a graph is gated and isomorphic to the Cartesian product of edges and even cycles. Furthermore, we show that our graphs are exactly the class of partial cubes in which any finite convex subgraph c…
We provide a short and self-contained proof of the classical result of Kostochka and of Thomason, ensuring that every graph of average degree $d$ has a complete minor of order $d/\sqrt{\log d}$.
In this paper, we make progress on a question related to one of Galvin that has attracted substantial attention recently. The question is that of determining among all graphs $G$ with $n$ vertices and $Δ(G)\leq r$, which has the most complete subgraphs of size $t$, for $t\geq 3$. The conjectured extremal graph is $aK_{r+1}\cup K_b$, where $n=a(r+1)+b$ with $0\leq b\leq r$. Gan, Loh, and Sudakov proved the conjecture when $a\leq 1$, and also reduced the general conjecture to the case $t=3$. We prove the conjecture for $r\leq 6$ and also establish a weaker form of the conjecture for all $r$.
Given an edge colouring of a graph with a set of $m$ colours, we say that the graph is (exactly) $m$-coloured if each of the colours is used. We consider edge colourings of the complete graph on $\mathbb{N}$ with infinitely many colours and show that either one can find an $m$-coloured complete subgraph for every natural number $m$ or there exists an infinite subset $X \subset \mathbb{N}$ coloured in one of two canonical ways: either the colouring is injective on $X$ or there exists a distinguished vertex $v$ in $X$ such that $X \setminus \lbrace v \rbrace$ is $1$-coloured and each edge betwee…
Let $K_{\mathbb{N}}$ be the complete symmetric digraph on the positive integers. Answering a question of DeBiasio and McKenney, we construct a $2$-colouring of the edges of $K_{\mathbb{N}}$ in which every monochromatic path has density~$0$. However, if we restrict the length of monochromatic paths in one colour, then no example as above can exist: We show that every $(r+1)$-edge-coloured complete symmetric digraph (of arbitrary infinite cardinality) containing no directed paths of edge-length $\ell_i$ for any colour $i\leq r$ can be covered by $\prod_{i\leq r} \ell_i$ pairwise disjoint monochr…
Given graphs G and H with V(G) containing V(H), suppose that we have a u,v-path P_{uv} in G for each edge uv in H. There are obvious additional conditions that ensure that G contains H as a rooted subgraph, subdivision, or immersion; we seek conditions that ensure that G contains H as a rooted minor or minor. This naturally leads to studying sets of paths that form an H-immersion, with the additional property that paths that contain the same vertex must have a common endpoint. We say that $H$ is contractible if, whenever G contains such an H-immersion, G must also contain a rooted H-minor. We …
It is well-known that in finite graphs, large complete minors/topological minors can be forced by assuming a large average degree. Our aim is to extend this fact to infinite graphs. For this, we generalise the notion of the relative end degree, which had been previously introduced by the first author for locally finite graphs, and show that large minimum relative degree at the ends and large minimum degree at the vertices imply the existence of large complete (topological) minors in infinite graphs with countably many ends.
An edge-coloring of a complete graph with a set of colors $C$ is called completely balanced if any vertex is incident to the same number of edges of each color from $C$. Erdős and Tuza asked in $1993$ whether for any graph $F$ on $\ell$ edges and any completely balanced coloring of any sufficiently large complete graph using $\ell$ colors contains a rainbow copy of $F$. This question was restated by Erdős in his list of ``Some of my favourite problems on cycles and colourings''. We answer this question in the negative for most cliques $F=K_q$ by giving explicit constructions of respective comp…
A connected $k$-chromatic graph $G$ is said to be {\it double-critical} if for all edges $uv$ of $G$ the graph $G - u - v$ is $(k-2)$-colourable. A longstanding conjecture of Erdős and Lovász states that the complete graphs are the only double-critical graphs. Kawarabayashi, Pedersen and Toft [\it{Electron. J. Combin.}, 17(1): Research Paper 87, 2010] proved that every double-critical $k$-chromatic graph with $k \leq 7$ contains a $K_k$ minor. It remains unknown whether an arbitrary double-critical $8$-chromatic graph contains a $K_8$ minor, but in this paper we prove that any double-critical …
