Guided by the planar interface of two dissimilar linear, homogeneous mediums, a Voigt surface wave arises due to an exceptional point of either of the two matrixes necessary to describe the spatial characteristics in the direction normal to the planar interface. There is no requirement for either or both partnering mediums to be dissipative, unlike a Voigt plane wave which can propagate only in a dissipative medium.
The physics of systems that cannot be described by a Hermitian Hamiltonian, has been attracting a great deal of attention in recent years, motivated by their nontrivial responses and by a plethora of applications for sensing, lasing, energy transfer/harvesting, topology and quantum networks. Electromagnetics is an inherently non-Hermitian research area because all materials are lossy, loss and gain distributions can be controlled with various mechanisms, and the underlying systems are open to radiation. Therefore, the recent developments in non-Hermitian physics offer exciting opportunities fo…
We show the recently discovered ghost waves - a special class of non-uniform electromagnetic waves in biaxial anisotropic media - can be used for optical sensing based on exceptional points. In addition to showing high sensitivity and precision, the proposed sensor employs simple planar geometry and is robust against noise.
We report a planar 1D photonic bandgap waveguide exhibiting four second-order exceptional points (EP2s). The interactions between the selective pairs of supported quasi-guided TE modes are modulated by spatial distribution of transverse in-homogeneous gain-loss profile.
We explore exceptional points (EP) in a dual-mode symmetric planar optical waveguide with transverse variation of inhomogeneous loss profile; where modal evolution alongside an EP is reported in the context of selective optical mode conversion.
An exceptional surface wave can propagate in an isolated direction, when guided by the planar interface of two homogeneous dielectric partnering mediums of which at least one is anisotropic, provided that the constitutive parameters of the partnering mediums satisfy certain constraints. Exceptional surface waves are distinguished from unexceptional surface waves by their localization characteristics: the fields of an exceptional surface wave in the anisotropic partnering medium decay as a combined linear-exponential function of distance from the interface, whereas the decay is purely exponenti…
The existence of surface electromagnetic waves in the dielectric-metal interface is due to the sign change of real parts of permittivity across the interface. In this work, we demonstrate that the interface constructed by two semi-infinite photonic crystals with different signs of the imaginary parts of permittivity also supports surface electromagnetic eigenmodes with real eigenfrequencies, protected by $ PT $ symmetry of such loss-gain interface. Using a multiple scattering method and full wave numerical methods, we show that the dispersion of such interface states exhibit unusual features s…
A simple matrix model that has been used to describe essential features of a PT symmetric set-up of three coupled wave guides is investigated. The emphasis of the study lies on the occurrence of an exceptional point of third order. It is demonstrated that the eigenfunctions in close vicinity of the exceptional point have a distinctive chiral behaviour. Using data describing realistic situations it is argued that such chiral behaviour can be tested experimentally.
We uncover the existence of Dirac and exceptional points in waveguides made of anisotropic materials, and study the transition between them. Dirac points in the dispersion diagram appear at propagation directions where the matrix describing the eigenvalue problem for bound states splits into two blocks, sorting the eigenmodes either by polarization or by inner mode symmetry. Introducing a non-Hermitian channel via a suitable leakage mechanism causes the Dirac points to transform into exceptional points connected by a Fermi arc. The exceptional points arise as improper hybrid leaky states and, …
Waves entering a spatially uniform lossy medium typically undergo exponential decay, arising from either the energy loss of the Beer-Lambert-Bouguer transmission law or the evanescent penetration during reflection. Recently, exceptional point singularities in non-Hermitian systems have been linked to unconventional wave propagation, such as the predicted extremely spatially broad constant-intensity guided modes. Despite such promises, the possibility of decay-free wave propagation in a purely lossy medium has been neither theoretically suggested nor experimentally realized until now. Here we d…
We demonstrate theoretically the electric tunability due to coalescence of exceptional points in PT-symmetric waveguides bounded by imperfect conductive layers. Owing to the competition effect of multimode interaction, multiple exceptional points and PT phase transitions could be attained in such a simple system and their occurrences are strongly dependent on the boundary conductive layers. When the conductive layers become very thin, it is found that the oblique transmittance and reflectance of the same system can be tuned between zero and one by a small change in carrier density. The results…
Electromagnetic waves propagating, at finite speeds, in conventional wave-guiding structures are reflected by discontinuities and decay in lossy regions. In this Letter, we drastically modify this typical guided-wave behavior by combining concepts from non-Hermitian physics and topological photonics. To this aim, we theoretically study, for the first time, the possibility of realizing an exceptional point between \emph{coupled topological modes in a non-Hermitian non-reciprocal waveguide}. Our proposed system is composed of oppositely-biased gyrotropic materials (e.g., biased plasmas or graphe…
Many novel properties of non-Hermitian systems are found at or near the exceptional points-branch points of complex energy surfaces at which eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. In particular, higher-order exceptional points can result in optical structures that are ultrasensitive to external perturbations. Here we show that an arbitrary order exceptional point can be achieved in a simple system consisting of identical resonators placed near a waveguide. Unidirectional coupling between any two chiral dipolar states of the resonators mediated by the waveguide mode leads to the exceptional poi…
We investigate the exceptional points (EPs) in a non-Hermitian system composed of a pair of graphene sheets with different losses. There are two surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) modes in the graphene waveguide. By varying the distance between two graphene sheets and chemical potential of graphene, the EPs appear as the eigenvalues, that is, the wave vectors of the two modes coalesce. The cross conversion of eigenmodes and variation of geometric phase can be observed by encircling the EP in the parametric space formed by the geometric parameters and chemical potential of graphene. At the same t…
Scattering of electromagnetic waves lies at the heart of most experimental techniques over nearly the entire electromagnetic spectrum, ranging from radio waves to optics and X-rays. Hence, deep insight into the basics of scattering theory and understanding the peculiar features of electromagnetic scattering is necessary for the correct interpretation of experimental data and an understanding of the underlying physics. Recently, a broad spectrum of exceptional scattering phenomena attainable in suitably engineered structures has been predicted and demonstrated. Examples include bound states in …
We analyze the time-domain dynamics of resonators supporting exceptional points (EPs), at which both the eigenfrequencies and the eigenmodes associated with perfect capture of an input wave coalesce. We find that a time-domain signature of the EP is an expansion of the class of waveforms which can be perfectly captured. We show that such resonators have improved performance for storage or transduction of energy. They also can be used to convert between waveforms within this class. We analytically derive these features and demonstrate them for several examples of coupled optical resonator syste…
We investigate the astonishing physical aspects of Exceptional Points (EPs) in a 1D planar few-mode optical waveguide. The waveguide hosts four quasi-guided modes. Here interactions between the selected pair of modes are modulated by a spatial distribution of inhomogeneous gain-loss profile. Both the coupled pairs approach two different second-order EPs in parameter plane. Considering a proper parametric loop to encircle the identified EPs simultaneously, we establish a specific topological feature where one round encirclement in parameter space yields the switching between the propagation con…
We report a 1D planar optical waveguide with transverse distribution of inhomogeneous loss profile, which exhibits an exceptional point (EP). The waveguide hosts two leaky resonant modes; where the interaction between them in the vicinity of the EP is controlled by proper adjustment of the inhomogeneity in attenuation profile only. We study the adiabatic dynamics of propagation constants of the coupled modes by quasi-static encirclement of control parameters around the EP. Realizing such an encirclement with the inhomogeneous loss distribution along the direction of light propagation, we repor…
Dynamical parametric encirclement around an Exceptional Point (EP) and corresponding asymmetric state transfer phenomenon have attracted considerable attention recently. In this context, beyond the reported time-asymmetric state dynamics around a second-order EP (EP2) in a two-level system, the investigation of similar state dynamics around a third-order EP (EP3) in a multi-state system, having comparably complex topology with rich physics, is lacking. Here, we report a fabrication-feasible few-mode planar optical waveguide with a customized gain-loss profile and investigate the effect of dyna…
We present a nanoscale active plasmonic waveguide system consisting of an array of periodic slits that can exhibit exceptional points and spectral singularities leading to several novel functionalities. The proposed symmetric active system operates near its cut-off wavelength and behaves as an effective epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) medium. We demonstrate the formation of an exceptional point (EP) that is accessed with very low gain coefficient values, a unique feature of the proposed nanoscale symmetric plasmonic configuration. Reflectionless ENZ transmission and perfect loss-compensation are reali…
We present a transmission line theory of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) in coupled-mode guiding structures, i.e., a theory that illustrates the characteristics of coupled electromagnetic modes under a special dispersion degeneracy condition, yet unexplored in the contest of gain and loss. We demonstrate the concept of Parity-Time ($\cal{PT}$)-symmetry in coupled uniform waveguides with balanced and symmetric gain and loss and how this condition is associated with a second order EPD. We show that by introducing gain into naturally lossy structures provides for the conditions whereby exc…
We present a novel approach and a theoretical framework for generating high order exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) in photonic structures based on periodic coupled resonators optical waveguides (CROWs). Such EPDs involve the coalescence of Floquet-Bloch eigenwaves in CROWs, without the presence of gain and loss, which is in contrast to the requirement of Parity-Time (PT) symmetry to develop exceptional points based on gain and loss balance. The EPDs arise here by introducing symmetry breaking in a conventional chain of coupled resonators through coupling the chain of resonators to an adj…
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) and exceptional points (EPs) have been the subjects of recent intensive research as they exhibit exotic phenomena that are significant for both fundamental physics and practical applications. We investigated the emergence of the Friedrich-Wintgen (FW) type BIC and the EP in a dielectric waveguide comprising a metal grating, focusing on their dependence on the grating thickness. The BIC emerges at a branch near the anti-crossing formed of the two waveguide modes, for a grating of any thickness. With the grating-thickness change, the anti-crossing gap varies …
We propose an optomechanical nano-gravimeter based on exceptional points. The system is a coupled cavity optomechanical system, in which the gain and loss are applied by driving the cavities with a blue detuned and red detuned electromagnetic field, respectively. When the gain and loss reach a balance, the system will show the degeneracy of exceptional points, and any perturbation will cause an eigenfrequencies split, which is proportional to the square root of the perturbation strength. Compared with the traditional optomechanical sensors, the sensitivity is greatly enhanced. This work paves …
Singularities, i.e. places of discontinuities of parameters are extremely general objects appearing in electromagnetic waves and thus are the key to understanding fundamental wave processes. These structures commonly occur in purely coherent, highly directional waves, such as laser beams, determining additional spatial or "`topological"' properties of the wave fields independently of their propagational dynamics. For instance, topologies of wave fronts, called phase singularities, add orbital degrees of freedom to electromagnetic waves. These singularities are common to all types of scalar wav…
The genesis of lasing, as an evolution of the laser hybrid eigenstates comprised of electromagnetic modes and atomic polarization, is considered. It is shown that the start of coherent generation at the laser threshold is preceded by the formation of a special hybrid state at the lasing pre-threshold. This special state is characterized by an enhanced coupling among excited atoms and electromagnetic modes. This leads to an increase in the rate of stimulated emission in the special state and, ultimately, to lasing. At the lasing pre-threshold, the transformation of hybrid eigenstates has the fe…
The quasi-one-dimensional rhombic array of the waveguides is considered. System of equations describing coupled waves in the waveguide in the linear limit is solved exactly. The electric field distribution was found both for the diffractionless (or dispersionless) flat band modes and for the dispersive modes.
Phoxonic crystal as a means of guiding and confining electromagnetic and elastic waves has already attracted attentions. Lack of exact knowledge on how these two types of waves interact inside this crystal and how electromagnetic wave evolves through this interaction has increased this field complexity. Here we explain how an elastic wave affects an electromagnetic wave through photo-elasticity and interface displacement mechanisms in a phoxonic crystal slab waveguide. We obtain a master equation which can describe electromagnetic wave evolution. In this equation we define a coupling parameter…
We demonstrate that exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs) are obtained in two coupled waveguides without resorting to gain and loss. We show the general concept that modes resulting from a proper coupling of forward and backward waves exhibit EPDs of order two and that there the group velocity vanishes. We verify our insight by using coupled mode theory and also by fullwave numerical simulations of light in a dielectric slab coupled to a grating, when one supports a forward wave whereas the other (the grating) supports a backward wave. We also demonstrate how to realize photonic indirect ban…
We study theoretical models of three coupled wave guides with a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric distribution of gain and loss. A realistic matrix model is developed in terms of a three-mode expansion. By comparing with a previously postulated matrix model it is shown how parameter ranges with good prospects of finding a third-order exceptional point (EP3) in an experimentally feasible arrangement of semiconductors can be determined. In addition it is demonstrated that continuous distributions of exceptional points, which render the discovery of the EP3 difficult, are not only a feature of extended wa…
An experimental setup of three coupled $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric wave guides showing the characteristics of a third-order exceptional point (EP3) has been investigated in an idealized model of three delta-functions wave guides in W.~D. Heiss and G.~Wunner, J. Phys. A 49, 495303 (2016). Here we extend these investigations to realistic, extended wave guide systems. We place major focus on the strong parameter sensitivity rendering the discovery of an EP3 a challenging task. We also investigate the vicinity of the EP3 for further branch points of either cubic or square root type behavior.

Physical systems with loss or gain feature resonant modes that are decaying or growing exponentially with time. Whenever two such modes coalesce both in their resonant frequency and their rate of decay or growth, a so-called "exceptional point" occurs, around which many fascinating phenomena have recently been reported to arise. Particularly intriguing behavior is predicted to appear when encircling an exceptional point sufficiently slowly, like a state-flip or the accumulation of a geometric phase. Experiments dedicated to this issue could already successfully explore the topological structur…
The usual concepts of topological physics, such as the Berry curvature, cannot be applied directly to non-Hermitian systems. We show that another object, the quantum metric, which often plays a secondary role in Hermitian systems, becomes a crucial quantity near exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems, where it diverges in a way that fully controls the description of wavepacket trajectories. The quantum metric behaviour is responsible for a constant acceleration with a fixed direction, and for a non-vanishing constant velocity with a controllable direction. Both contributions are independe…
A planar waveguide with impedance boundary, composed of non-perfect metallic plates, and with passive or active dielectric filling is considered. We show the possibility of selective mode guiding and amplification when homogeneous pump is added to the dielectric, and analyze differences in TE and TM mode propagation. Such a non-conservative system is also shown to feature exceptional points, for specific and experimentally tunable parameters, which are described for a particular case of transparent dielectric.
Weyl points are the simplest topologically-protected degeneracy in a three-dimensional dispersion relation. The realization of Weyl semimetals in photonic crystals has allowed these singularities and their consequences to be explored with electromagnetic waves. However, it is difficult to achieve nonlinearities in such systems. One promising approach is to use the strong-coupling of photons and excitons, because the resulting polaritons interact through their exciton component. Yet topological polaritons have only been realized in two dimensions. Here, we predict that the dispersion relation f…
Line waves are recently discovered wave entities that are localized along two directions, and therefore can be viewed as the one-dimensional counterpart of surface waves. These waves can be supported at discontinuities of the surface reactance and/or resistance of low-dimensional materials such as metasurfaces or graphene. Here, a broader class of non-Hermitian surface-impedance junctions is studied that can support coupled line waves, and allows investigating different one-dimensional waveguiding mechanisms in a unified framework. It is theoretically demonstrated that, under parity-time-symme…
We consider a two-dimensional nonlinear waveguide with distributed gain and losses. The optical potential describing the system consists of an unperturbed complex potential depending only on one transverse coordinate, i.e., corresponding to a planar waveguide, and a small non-separable perturbation depending on both transverse coordinates. It is assumed that the spectrum of the unperturbed planar waveguide features an exceptional point (EP), while the perturbation drives the system into the unbroken phase. Slightly below the EP, the waveguide sustains two-component envelope solitons. We derive…
We identify a new kind of physically realizable exceptional point (EP) corresponding to degenerate coherent perfect absorption, in which two purely incoming solutions of the wave operator for electromagnetic or acoustic waves coalesce to a single state. Such non-hermitian degeneracies can occur at a real-valued frequency without any associated noise or non-linearity, in contrast to EPs in lasers. The absorption lineshape for the eigenchannel near the EP is quartic in frequency around its maximum in any dimension. In general, for the parameters at which an operator EP occurs, the associated sca…
We reveal the existence of continuous families of guided single-mode solitons in planar waveguides with weakly nonlinear active core and absorbing boundaries. Stable propagation of TE and TM-polarized solitons is accompanied by attenuation of all other modes, i.e. the waveguide features properties of conservative and dissipative systems. If the linear spectrum of the waveguide possesses exceptional points, which occurs in the case of TM-polarization, an originally focusing (defocusing) material nonlinearity may become effectively defocusing (focusing). This occurs due to the geometric phase of…
