Discrete approximations to the equation
\begin{equation*} L_{cont}u = u^{(4)} + D(x) u^{(3)} + A(x) u^{(2)} + (A'(x)+H(x)) u^{(1)} + B(x) u = f, \; x\in[0,1] \end{equation*} are considered. This is an extension of the Sturm-Liouville case $D(x)\equiv H(x)\equiv 0$ [ M. Ben-Artzi, J.-P. Croisille, D. Fishelov and R. Katzir, Discrete fourth-order Sturm-Liouville problems, IMA J. Numer. Anal. {\bf 38} (2018), 1485-1522. doi: 10.1093/imanum/drx038] to the non-self-adjoint setting. The "natural" boundary conditions in the Sturm-Liouville case are the values of the function and its derivative. The inclusion of a third-order discrete derivative entails a revision of the underlying discrete functional calculus. This revision forces evaluations of accurate discrete approximations to the boundary values of the second, third and fourth order derivatives. The resulting functional calculus provides the discrete analogs of the fundamental Sobolev properties--compactness and coercivity. It allows to obtain a general convergence theorem of the discrete approximations to the exact solution. Some representative numerical examples are presented.
In this paper, we revisit the $L_2$-norm error estimate for $C^0$-interior penalty analysis of Dirichlet boundary control problem governed by biharmonic operator. In this work, we have relaxed the interior angle condition of the domain from $120$ degrees to $180$ degrees, therefore this analysis can be carried out for any convex domain. The theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical experiments. Moreover, we propose a new analysis to derive the error estimates for the biharmonic equation with Cahn-Hilliard type boundary condition under minimal regularity assumption.
A fourth-order finite volume embedded boundary (EB) method is presented for the unsteady Stokes equations. The algorithm represents complex geometries on a Cartesian grid using EB, employing a technique to mitigate the "small cut-cell" problem without mesh modifications, cell merging, or state redistribution. Spatial discretizations are based on a weighted least-squares technique that has been extended to fourth-order operators and boundary conditions, including an approximate projection to enforce the divergence-free constraint. Solutions are advanced in time using a fourth-order additive imp…
We consider fourth order singularly perturbed boundary value problems with two small parameters, and the approximation of their solution by the $hp$ version of the Finite Element Method on the {\emph{Spectral Boundary Layer}} mesh from \cite{MXO}. We use a mixed formulation requiring only $C^{0}$ basis functions in two-dimensional smooth domains. Under the assumption of analytic data, we show that the method converges uniformly, with respect to both singular perturbation parameters, at an exponential rate when the error is measured in the energy norm. Our theoretical findings are illustrated t…
We develop a fourth order accurate finite difference method for the three dimensional elastic wave equation in isotropic media with the piecewise smooth material property. In our model, the material property can be discontinuous at curved interfaces. The governing equations are discretized in second order form on curvilinear meshes by using a fourth order finite difference operator satisfying a summation-by-parts property. The method is energy stable and high order accurate. The highlight is that mesh sizes can be chosen according to the velocity structure of the material so that computational…
We present a novel fully fourth order in time and space {finite difference method for the time domain Maxwell's equations} in metamaterials. We consider a Drude metamaterial model for the material response to incident electromagnetic fields. We consider the second order formulation of the system of partial differential equations that govern the evolution in time of electric and magnetic fields along with the evolution of the polarization and magnetization current densities. Our discretization employs fourth order staggering in space of different field components and the modified equation appro…
A crucial part of successful wave propagation related inverse problems is an efficient and accurate numerical scheme for solving the seismic wave equations. In particular, the numerical solution to a multi-dimensional Helmholtz equation can be troublesome when the perfectly matched layer (PML) boundary condition is implemented. In this paper, we present a general approach for constructing fourth-order finite difference schemes for the Helmholtz equation with PML in the two-dimensional domain based on point-weighting strategy. Particularly, we develop two optimal fourth-order finite difference …
A fourth-order compact scheme is proposed for a fourth-order subdiffusion equation with the first Dirichlet boundary conditions. The fourth-order problem is firstly reduced into a couple of spatially second-order system and we use an averaged operator to construct a fourth-order spatial approximation. This averaged operator is compact since it involves only two grid points for the derivative boundary conditions. The L1 formula on irregular mesh is considered for the Caputo fractional derivative, so we can resolve the initial singularity of solution by putting more grid points near the initial …
We analyze two types of summation-by-parts finite difference operators for approximating the second derivative with variable coefficient. The first type uses ghost points, while the second type does not use any ghost points. A previously unexplored relation between the two types of summation-by-parts operators is investigated. By combining them we develop a new fourth order accurate finite difference discretization with hanging nodes on the mesh refinement interface. We take the model problem as the two-dimensional acoustic wave equation in second order form in terms of acoustic pressure, and …
We propose a novel hybrid high-order method (HHO) to approximate singularly perturbed fourth-order PDEs on domains with a possibly curved boundary. The two key ideas in devising the method are the use of a Nitsche-type boundary penalty technique to weakly enforce the boundary conditions and a scaling of the weighting parameter in the stabilization operator that compares the singular perturbation parameter to the square of the local mesh size. With these ideas in hand, we derive stability and optimal error estimates over the whole range of values for the singular perturbation parameter, includi…
We revisit the L2 norm error estimate for the C0 interior penalty analysis of fourth order Dirichlet boundary control problem. The L2 norm estimate for the optimal control is derived under reduced regularity assumption and this analysis can be carried out on any convex polygonal domains. Residual based a-posteriori error bounds are derived for optimal control, state and adjoint state variables under minimal regularity assumptions. The estimators are shown to be reliable and locally efficient. The theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical experiments.
In this paper, a second-order backward difference formula (abbr. BDF2) is used to approximate first-order time partial derivative, the Riesz fractional derivatives are approximated by fourth-order compact operators, a class of new alternating-direction implicit difference scheme (abbr. ADI) is constructed for two-dimensional Riesz space fractional nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation. Stability and convergence of the numerical method are analyzed. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is effective.
Structure-preserving finite-difference schemes for general nonlinear fourth-order parabolic equations on the one-dimensional torus are derived. Examples include the thin-film and the Derrida-Lebowitz-Speer-Spohn equations. The schemes conserve the mass and dissipate the entropy. The scheme associated to the logarithmic entropy also preserves the positivity. The idea of the derivation is to reformulate the equations in such a way that the chain rule is avoided. A central finite-difference discretization is then applied to the reformulation. In this way, the same dissipation rates as in the cont…
We propose a fourth-order unfitted characteristic finite element method to solve the advection-diffusion equation on time-varying domains. Based on a characteristic-Galerkin formulation, our method combines the cubic MARS method for interface tracking, the fourth-order backward differentiation formula for temporal integration, and an unfitted finite element method for spatial discretization. Our convergence analysis includes errors of discretely representing the moving boundary, tracing boundary markers, and the spatial discretization and the temporal integration of the governing equation. We establish the error bounds of fourth-order compact finite difference (4cFD) methods for the Dirac equation in the massless and nonrelativistic regime, which involves a small dimensionless parameter $0 < \varepsilon \le 1$ inversely proportional to the speed of light. In this regime, the solution propagates waves with wavelength $O(\varepsilon)$ in time and $O(1)$ in space, as well as with the wave speed $O(1/\varepsilon)$ rapid outgoing waves. We adapt the conservative and semi-implicit 4cFD methods to discretize the Dirac equation and rigorously carry out their error bounds depending expli…
The split Bregman framework for Osher-Solé-Vese (OSV) model and fourth order total variation flow are studied. We discretize the problem by piecewise constant function and compute $\nabla(-Δ_{\mathrm{av}})^{-1}$ approximately and exactly. Furthermore, we provide a new shrinkage operator for Spohn's fourth order model. Numerical experiments are demonstrated for fourth order problems under periodic boundary condition.

Error Analysis of Third-Order in Time and Fourth-Order Linear Finite Difference Scheme for Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert Equation under Large Damping Parameters
We present the fourth-order compact finite difference (4cFD) discretizations for the long time dynamics of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation (NKGE), while the nonlinearity strength is characterized by $\varepsilon^p$ with a constant $p \in \mathbb{N}^+$ and a dimensionless parameter $\varepsilon \in (0, 1]$. Based on analytical results of the life-span of the solution, rigorous error bounds of the 4cFD methods are carried out up to the time at $O(\varepsilon^{-p})$. We pay particular attention to how error bounds depend explicitly on the mesh size $h$ and time step $τ$ as well as the small p…
In this work, we consider a boundary value problem for nonlinear triharmonic equation. Due to the reduction of nonlinear boundary value problems to operator equation for nonlinear terms we establish the existence, uniqueness and positivity of solution. More importantly, we design an iterative method at both continuous and discrete level for numerical solution of the problem. An analysis of actual total error of the obtained discrete solution is made. Some examples demonstrate the applicability of the theoretical results on qualitative aspects and the efficiency of the iterative method.
We propose two finite-difference algorithms of fourth order of accuracy for solving the initial problem of the Zakharov-Shabat system. Both schemes have the exponential form and conserve quadratic invariant of Zakharov-Shabat system. The second scheme contains the spectral parameter in exponent only and allows to apply the fast computational algorithm.
In this work, we introduce semi-implicit or implicit finite difference schemes for the continuity equation with a gradient flow structure. Examples of such equations include the linear Fokker-Planck equation and the Keller-Segel equations. The two proposed schemes are first order accurate in time, explicitly solvable, and second order and fourth order accurate in space, which are obtained via finite difference implementation of the classical continuous finite element method. The fully discrete schemes are proven positivity-preserving and energy-dissipative: the second order scheme can achieve …

In this paper, based on the developed nonlinear fourth-order operator and method of order reduction, a novel fourth-order compact difference scheme is constructed for the mixed-type time-fractional Burgers' equation, from which $L_1$-discretization formula is employed to deal with the terms of fractional derivative, and the nonlinear convection term is discretized by nonlinear compact difference operator. Then a fully discrete compact difference scheme can be established by approximating spatial second-order derivative with classic compact difference formula. The convergence and stability are …
In this paper we consider a class of fourth order nonlinear integro-differential equations with Navier boundary conditions. By the reduction of the problem to operator equation we establish the existence and uniqueness of solution and construct a numerical method for solving it. We prove that the method is of second order accuracy and obtain an estimate for total error. Some examples demonstrate the validity of the obtained theoretical results and the efficiency of the numerical method.
To achieve efficient and accurate long-time integration, we propose a fast, accurate, and stable high-order numerical method for solving fractional-in-space reaction-diffusion equations. The proposed method is explicit in nature and utilizes the fourth-order compact finite difference scheme and matrix transfer technique (MTT) in space with FFT-based implementation. Time integration is done through the accurate fourth-order modified exponential time differencing Runge-Kutta scheme. This manuscript introduces a fourth-order Runge-Kutta based implicit-explicit scheme in time along with compact fourth-order finite difference scheme in space for the solution of one-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions, respectively. The proposed scheme takes full advantage of method of line (MOL) and partial fraction decomposition techniques, therefore it just need to solve two backward Euler-type linear systems at each time step to get the solution. Performance of the scheme is investigated by testing it on some test examples and by compa…
