The Hamamatsu R5912-02Mod photomultiplier tube (PMT) will be used in the DUNE dual-phase module, a 10-kton fiducial volume liquid-argon time-projection chamber, which is one of the four projected far-detector modules of the DUNE long-baseline neutrino experiment. In the DUNE dual-phase module, the liquid argon places high pressure on the photo-detectors located at the bottom of the 14-m cryostat. Four Hamamatsu R5912-02Mod PMTs were tested at 4-bar absolute pressure and cryogenic temperature (in liquid nitrogen) for the first time. No mechanical or electrical damage is reported, validating the use of this PMT model in the DUNE dual-phase module and in other large scale cryogenic liquid detectors. The differences observed in their behavior are expected for the change in the PMT operating temperature.
We have shown that high voltage biased Hamamatsu R11410-20 photomultipliers with a dark count rate above 10 kHz emit single photons. The effect has been observed in a few units at room temperature and temperatures reduced down to -60 degrees Celsius. The effect should be taken into account in experiments aimed on search for rare events with small energy depositions in massive liquid xenon detectors.
Hamamatsu R5900-00-M64 and R7600-00-M64 photomultiplier tubes will be used with wavelength--shifting optical fibres to read out scintillator strips in the MINOS near detector. We report on measurements of the gain, efficiency, linearity, crosstalk, and dark noise of 232 of these PMTs, of which 219 met MINOS requirements.
We present a detailed characterisation of the new Hamamatsu R12199-01 HA MOD 3-inch photomultiplier tube (PMT) which is under consideration for the use in segmented optical modules of deep-ice neutrino detectors at the South Pole. Because of the significantly lower operation-temperature range compared to standard applications, a focus of our studies lies on the investigation of the temperature dependence of background characteristics (dark count rate, probability of correlated pulses), timing properties, gain and peak-to-valley ratio of this PMT type. In addition, the performance of the `HA co…
It is common practice to test the optical properties of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) by illuminating the entire photocathode region from the front at once and measuring the average performance. However, for optimal utilisation of the PMT performance in experiments, especially in the single-photon region, it is essential to also know the systematic variations across the photocathode, which requires measurements with focused light sources that illuminate only small regions of the PMT. We present a detailed uniformity characterisation of the gain, transit time, transit time spread, and pulse shap…
Vacuum ultraviolet light sensitive photomultiplier tubes directly coupled to liquid xenon are being used to efficiently detect the 178 nm scintillation light in a variety of liquid xenon based particle detectors. Good knowledge of the performance of these photomultipliers under cryogenic conditions is needed to properly characterize these detectors. Here, we report on measurements of the quantum efficiency of Hamamatsu R8520 photomultipliers, used in the XENON Dark Matter Experiments. The quantum efficiency measurements at room temperature agree with the values provided by Hamamatsu. At low te…
ICARUS T600 will be operated as far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab (USA), which foresees three liquid argon time projection chambers along the Booster Neutrino Beam line to search for a LSND-like sterile neutrino signal. The detector employs 360 photomultiplier tubes, Hamamatsu model R5912-MOD, suitable for cryogenic applications. A total of 400 PMTs were procured from Hamamatsu and tested at room temperature to evaluate the performance of the devices and their compliance to detect the liquid argon scintillation light in the T600 detector. Furthermore 60 units were…
The Hamamatsu R11410 photomultiplier, a tube of 3" diameter and with a very low intrinsic radioactivity, is an interesting light sensor candidate for future experiments using liquid xenon (LXe) as target for direct dark matter searches. We have performed several experiments with the R11410 with the goal of testing its performance in environments similar to a dark matter detector setup. In particular, we examined its long-term behavior and stability in LXe and its response in various electric field configurations.

The crosstalk and afterpulsing in Hamamatsu silicon photomultipliers, called Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs), have been studied in depth. Several components of the correlated noise have been identified according to their different possible causes and their effects on the signal. In particular, we have distinguished between prompt and delayed crosstalk as well as between trap-assisted and hole-induced afterpulsing. The prompt crosstalk has been characterized through the pulse amplitude spectrum measured at dark conditions. The newest MPPC series, which incorporate isolating trenches between…
The model R5912-20MOD photomultiplier tube(PMT) is made for cryogenic application by Hamamatsu. In this paper, we report on the measurement of relative quantum efficiency (QE) of this model PMT at liquid argon(LAr) temperature. Furthermore, a specially designed setup and relevant test method are introduced. The relative QE is measured in visible wavelengths with the PMT emerged in high purity nitrogen atmosphere. The results show that the change of QE at LAr temperature is within about 5% compared with room temperature around 420 nm. However, the QE increases about 10% in the shorter wavelengt…
We have investigated the effects of X-ray irradiation to doses of 0, 200 Gy, 20 kGy, 2 MGy, and 20 MGy on the Hamamatsu silicon-photomultiplier (SiPM) S10362-11-050C. The SiPMs were irradiated without applied bias voltage. From current-voltage, capacitance/conductance-voltage, -frequency, pulse-shape, and pulse-area measurements, the SiPM characteristics below and above breakdown voltage were determined. Significant changes of some SiPM parameters are observed. Up to a dose of 20 kGy the performance of the SiPMs is hardly affected by X-ray radiation damage. For doses of 2 and 20 MGy the SiPMs …
Signal-induced noise is observed in Hamamatsu R11265 Multianode Photomultiplier Tubes, manifesting up to several microseconds after the single photoelectron response signal and localised in specific anodes. The mean number of noise pulses varies between devices, and shows significant dependence on the applied high-voltage. The characterisation of this noise and the mitigation strategies to perform optimal single-photon counting at 40 MHz, as required by the LHCb Ring-Imaging Cherenkov detectors, are reported.
Four Hamamatsu H6528 Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) assemblies were purchased by the University of Regina, to be used on the SHMS Heavy Gas Cherenkov detector. Despite the excellent gain, the H6528 signal output has two disturbing characteristics: discharges and ringing tails. In this report, we offer solutions to overcome these issues.
The Hamamatsu R11410 and R8520 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are designed for applications in dark matter detectors using liquid xenon, featuring excellent sensitivity to VUV light and stable operability at cryogenic temperatures. For eleven R11410 and seven R8520 PMTs, we measured the relative photo-detection sensitivity at 470nm as a function of the position of the incident light on the photocathode. Considering 80% of the photocathode surfaces, the observed non-uniformity values are in the ranges of (5-10)% and (25-30)% for the R11410 and R8520 models, respectively. We found that the non-uni…
This paper reports on the time resolution of two photodetectors operated as single photon counters at high rate: a Hamamatsu R13742-103-M64 "conventional" (based on metal dynodes) multi-anode photomultiplier tube (MaPMT) and a Hamamatsu R10754-07-M16 microchannel plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT). The MCP-PMT shows a time resolution (transit time spread, or jitter) of ~70 ps FWHM (~30 ps RMS) at low photon rates, but saturates above ~100 kHz/mm^2. The MaPMT can handle photon counting rates up to the highest tested, 10 MHz/mm^2. Its time resolution is ~250 ps FWHM (~110 ps RMS) when only the…
The H12700 is a novel 64-channel 52 $\times$ 52 mm$^2$ square Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tube (MaPMT) produced by Hamamatsu. Its characteristics make this device suitable for high energy physics applications, such as in Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors. Hamamatsu provides the H12700 tube with an embedded socket connecting the anodes to the output pins and including an active voltage divider. A second device version, the R12699, is also available and differs from the former by the absence of the socket. This paper describes a complete characterization of both models, starting from the s…
We report results from studies of the helium poisoning of a 16-anode photomultiplier tube R5900-00-M16 manufactured by Hamamatsu Photonics. A tube was immersed in pure helium for a period of about four months and was periodically monitored using a digital oscilloscope. Our results are based on the analysis of waveforms triggered by the dark noise pulses. Collected data yield evidence of after-pulses due to helium contamination of the tube. The probability of after-pulsing increased linearly with the exposure time to helium but the phototube suffered only a small drop in gain, indicating genera…
Current and future neutrino and direct detection dark matter experiments hope to take advantage of improving technologies in photon detection. Many of these detectors are large, monolithic optical detectors that use relatively low-cost, large-area, and efficient photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). A candidate PMT for future experiments is a newly developed prototype Hamamatsu PMT, the R5912-MOD. In this paper we describe measurements made of the single photoelectron time and charge response of the R5912-MOD, as well as detail some direct comparisons to similar PMTs. Additionally, a 1D scan of the ph…

The aim of this paper is to fully characterize the new multi-anode photomultiplier tube R11265-103-M64, produced by Hamamatsu. Its high effective active area (77%), its pixel size, the low dark signal rate and the capability to detect single photon signals make this tube suitable for an application in high energy physics, such as for RICH detectors. Four tubes and two different bias voltage dividers have been tested. The results of a standard characterization of the gain and the anode uniformity, the dark signal rate, the cross-talk and the device behaviour as a function of temperature have be…
To satisfy the requirements of the next generation of dark matter detectors based on the dual phase TPC, Hamamatsu, in close collaboration with UCLA, has developed the R11410-10 photomultipler tube. In this work, we present the detailed tests performed on this device. High QE (>30%) accompanied by a low dark count rate (50 Hz at 0.3 PE) and high gain (10^7) with good single PE resolution have been observed. A comprehensive screening measurement campaign is ongoing while the manufacturer quotes a radioactivity of 20 mBq/PMT. These characteristics show the R11410-10 to be particularly suitable f…
We report on the measurements of the absolute Quantum Efficiency(QE) for Hamamatsu model R11410-10 PMTs specially designed for the use in low background liquid xenon detectors. QE was measured for five PMTs in a spectral range between 154.5 nm to 400 nm at low temperatures down to -110$^0$C. It was shown that during the PMT cooldown from room temperature to -110 $^0$C (a typical PMT operation temperature in liquid xenon detectors), the absolute QE increases by a factor of 1.1 - 1.15 at 175 nm. The QE growth rate with respect to temperature is wavelength dependent peaking at about 165 nm corres…
The presented results are obtained during the first steps taken in order to develop a setup and measurement procedures which allow to compare properties of diverse kinds of silicon photomultipliers. The response to low-intensity light was studied for silicon photomultipliers produced by CPTA (Russia), Hamamatsu (Japan), ITC-irst (Italy) and SensL (Ireland).
The Hamamatsu R5912-HQE photomultiplier-tube (PMT) is a novel high-quantum efficiency PMT. It is currently used in the DEAP-3600 dark matter detector and is of significant interest for future dark matter and neutrino experiments where high signal yields are needed. We report on the methods developed for in-situ characterization and monitoring of DEAP's 255 R5912-HQE PMTs. This includes a detailed discussion of typical measured single-photoelectron charge distributions, correlated noise (afterpulsing), dark noise, double, and late pulsing characteristics. The characterization is performed durin…
Future large water Cherenkov and scintillator detectors have been proposed for measurements of long baseline neutrino oscillations, proton decay, supernova and solar neutrinos. To ensure cost-effectiveness and optimize scientific reach, one of the critical requirements for such detectors are large-area, high performance photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). One candidate for such a device is the Hamamatsu R11780, a 12" PMT that is available in both standard and high quantum efficiency versions. Measurements of the single photoelectron response characteristics, relative efficiencies of the standard and…
We describe an improved in-situ calibration of the single-photoelectron charge distributions for each of the in-ice Hamamatsu Photonics R7081-02[MOD] photomultiplier tubes in the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The characterization of the individual PMT charge distributions is important for PMT calibration, data and Monte Carlo simulation agreement, and understanding the effect of hardware differences within the detector. We discuss the single photoelectron identification procedure and how we extract the single-photoelectron charge distribution using a deconvolution of the multiple-photoelectron…
We have characterized two state-of-the-art solid-state photomultipliers, one by SensL, the other by Hamamatsu, coupled to scintillators by Saint-Gobain Crystals in the -25 to 50 degrees C temperature range. At room temperature, the energy resolution at 661.6 keV measured with both detectors is worse than the resolution obtained when the crystals are coupled to a regular photomultiplier tube. Both the pulse height and pulse height resolution of the 661.6 keV gamma rays in the 137Cs spectrum vary strongly with temperature. The noise threshold determined from the 22Na spectrum increases quadratic…
In this article, a new method is discussed for the calibration and monitoring of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). This method is based on a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and it is fast and general so that it can be used in cases where an analytical model of the PMT response is not available. The DFT approach is employed for the absolute calibration of the Hamamatsu R1408 photomultiplier tube. It should be noted that the R1408 PMTs do not show a sharp peak at the single photoelectron distribution and gain determination via conventional methods is often unattainable. Here, we show that the DFT t…
We compared the performance of a SiPM array and a PMT in a laboratory setting using a single 5.08x5.08-cm cylindrical sodium iodide scintillating crystal. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are the most commonly used device to monitor scintillating materials for radiation detection purposes. The systems are sometimes limited by disadvantages in the PMTs that may degrade their performance, including temperature dependence and variation with magnetic field. Instrumentation engineering must also contend with a potentially large volume relative to the active scintillator volume, fragility, and high volt…
We present characterization results of two silicon photomultipliers; the Hamamatsu LVR-6050-CN and the Ketek PM3325 WB. With our measurements of the bias dependence of the breakdown probability we are able to draw conclusions about the location and spatial extension of the avalanche region. For the KETEK SiPM we find that the avalanche region is located close to the surface. In the Hamamatsu SiPM the high-field region is located $0.5\,μ$m below the surface, while the volume above is depleted almost until the surface. Furthermore, for the Hamamatsu SiPM we find that charge carriers produced by …
We have investigated the response of a significant sample of Hamamatsu H8500 MultiAnode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMTs) as single photon detectors, in view of their use in a ring imaging Cherenkov counter for the CLAS12 spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For this, a laser working at 407.2nm wavelength was employed. The sample is divided equally into standard window type, with a spectral response in the visible light region, and UV-enhanced window type MAPMTs. The studies confirm the suitability of these MAPMTs for single photon detection in such a Cherenkov imag…
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have a low radioactivity, compact geometry, low operation voltage, and reasonable photo-detection efficiency for vacuum ultraviolet light (VUV). Therefore it has the potential to replace photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for future dark matter experiments with liquid xenon (LXe). However, SiPMs have nearly two orders of magnitude higher dark count rate (DCR) compared to that of PMTs at the LXe temperature ($\sim$ 165 K). This type of high DCR mainly originates from the carriers that are generated by band-to-band tunneling effect. To suppress the tunneling effect, we…
Detection of light signals is crucial to a wide range of particle detectors. In particular, efficient detection of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light will provide new opportunities for some novel detectors currently being developed, but is technically challenging. In this article, we characterized the performance of Hamamatsu VUV4 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for detecting VUV argon scintillation light without wavelength shifting. Using a customized cryogenic amplifier design, we operated two models of VUV4 SiPMs inside liquid argon and thoroughly examined their direct sensitivities to liquid …
The VERITAS gamma-ray telescope array has been operating since 2007 and has been equipped with Hamamatsu R10560-100-20 PMTs since 2012. A decision to continue operations into the mid 2020s was taken in 2019 so the question of whether the PMTs would need replacing became important and a study was initiated. We present results from scanning two groups of 20 Hamamatsu R10560-100-20 PMTs with an LED flasher. One group comprised five PMTs from each of the four VERITAS telescopes and the other was made up of 20 PMTs of the same type, and date of manufacture, that had never been used. We measured thr…
We present the precision calibration of 35 Hamamatsu R11410-22 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with xenon scintillation light centred near 175 nm. This particular PMT variant was developed specifically for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter experiment. A room-temperature xenon scintillation cell coupled to a vacuum cryostat was used to study the full-face PMT response at both room and low temperature $\textrm{($\sim$ -100$^\circ$C)}$, in particular to determine the quantum efficiency (QE) and double photoelectron emission (DPE) probability in LZ operating conditions. For our sample with an average Q…
We report on test results of a novel ring imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detection system consisting of a 3 meter long gaseous C4F8O radiator, a focusing mirror, and a photon detector array based on Hamamatsu multi-anode photomultiplier tubes. This system was developed to identify charged particles in the momentum range from 3-70 GeV/c for the BTeV experiment.
Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are considered as a solid-state sensor alternative to photomultiplier tubes in experiments using liquid xenon (LXe) as a radiation detection medium. The main requirements are single-photon detection of the vacuum ultraviolet scintillation light from LXe at 178$\,$nm with high resolution and detection efficiency and low noise rates. Further requirements for dark matter and double beta decay searches are ultra-low radioactivity levels of all the components including the substrates and cold electronics. Here we describe our characterisation of Hamamatsu 6$\times$6…
We present the results of modeling and simulating the Hamamatsu R5912 photomultiplier tube that is used in most of the sites of the Latin American Giant Observatory (LAGO). The model was compared with data of in-operation water Cherenkov detectors (WCD) installed at Bucaramanga-Colombia and Bariloche-Argentina. The LAGO project is an international experiment that spans across Latin America at different altitudes joining more than 35 institutions of 11 countries. It is mainly oriented to basic research on gamma-ray bursts and space weather phenomena. The LAGO network consists of single or small…
The detector for the MiniBooNE experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory employs 1520 8 inch Hamamatsu models R1408 and R5912 photomultiplier tubes with custom-designed bases. Tests were performed to determine the dark rate, charge and timing resolutions, double-pulsing rate, and desired operating voltage for each tube, so that the tubes could be sorted for optimal placement in the detector. Seven phototubes were tested to find the angular dependence of their response. After the Super-K phototube implosion accident, an analysis was performed to determine the risk of a similar acc…
The hemispherical 10" photomultiplier tube (PMT) R7081 from Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) is used in various experiments in particle and astroparticle physics. We describe the test and calibration of 474 PMTs for the reactor antineutrino experiment Double Chooz. The unique test setup at Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik Heidelberg (MPIK) allows one to calibrate 30 PMTs simultaneously and to characterize the single photo electron response, transit time spread, linear behaviour and saturation effects, photon detection efficiency and high voltage calibration.
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a 40-kton underground liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LAr TPC) detector, for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies and for neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. Photon detector systems embedded within the LAr TPC add precise timing capabilities for non-beam events. The ProtoDUNE dual phase detector will consist of a 6x6x6 m3 liquid argon time-projection chamber placed at CERN and the light readout will be formed by 8-inch cryogenic photomultipliers from Hamamatsu. The characterization of the 36 photomultipliers, the base…
To increase the light yield of a liquid Ar (LAr) detector, we optimized the evaporation technique of tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) on the detector surface and tested the operability of a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), namely, the multi-pixel photon counter with through-silicon-via (TSV-MPPC, Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.) at LAr temperature. TPB converts the LAr scintillations (vacuum ultraviolet light) to visible light, which can be detected by high-sensitivity photosensors. Because the light yield depends on the deposition mass of TPB on the inner surface of the detector, we constructed a well-con…
We investigated the use of Hamamatsu fine-mesh photomultiplier tube assemblies H6152-70 and H6614-70 with regards to their gain and timing resolution in magnetic fields up to 1.9 T. Our results show that the H6614-70 assembly can operate reliably in magnetic fields exceeding 1.5 T, while preserving a reasonable timing resolution even with a gain reduction of a factor of approximately 100. The reduction of the relative gain of the H6152-70 is similar to the H6614-70's near 1.5 T, but its timing resolution worsens considerably at this high field.
Decreasing the operation temperature of a Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) leads to a drop in its dark noise. Some experiments consider cold temperatures as an option for low noise applications of SiPM. One of those is the TAO detector, which requires operation at $T\approx -50~^\circ$C. A significant dependence of the Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) of a SiPM on different temperatures was reported with a drastic drop around this temperature. In this paper, we present studies of performance for two samples of SiPMs from Hamamatsu and AdvanSID(FBK) companies in a broad temperature range. No si…
This paper describes the characterization studies under low magnetic fields of the Hamamatsu R7081 photomultipliers that are being used in the Double Chooz experiment. The design and performances of the magnetic shielding that has been developed for these photomultipliers are also reported.
Hamamatsu photomultiplier tubes (PMT) and various PMT window materials were exposed to gamma irradiation. Tests were performed with absorbed doses of 1 krad and 120 krad. Initial recommendations on PMT types to use in the BTeV electromagnetic calorimeter are stated.
The MicroBooNE detector, to be located on axis in the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), consists of two main components: a large liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC), and a light collection system. Thirty 8-inch diameter Hamamatsu R5912-02mod cryogenic photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) will detect the scintillation light generated in the liquid argon (LAr). This article first describes the MicroBooNE PMT performance test procedures, including how the light collection system functions in the detector, and the design of the PMT base. The…
Hamamatsu single anode R7761 and multi-anode R5900-00-M16 Photomultiplier Tubes have been characterized for use in a Secondary Emission (SE) Ionization Calorimetry study. SE Ionization Calorimetry is a novel technique to measure electromagnetic shower particles in extreme radiation environments. The different operation modes used in these tests were developed by modifying the conventional PMT bias circuit. These modifications were simple changes to the arrangement of the voltage dividers of the baseboard circuits. The PMTs with modified bases, referred to as operating in SE mode, are used as a…
This note describes a prototype particle tracking detector constructed with 1 mm plastic scintillating fibres with a 64 channel Hamamatsu H8500 flat-panel multi-anode photomultiplier readout. Cosmic ray tracks from an array of 11 gas-filled drift tubes were matched to signals in the scintillating fibres in order to measure the resolution and efficiency of tracks reconstructed in the fibre-based tracker. A GEANT4 detector simulation was also developed to compare cosmic ray data with MC results and is discussed in the note. Using the parameters measured in this experimental setup, modified fibre…
The photon detection efficiency of two sets of R10560-100-20 superbialkali photomultiplier tubes from Hamamatsu were measured between 200 nm and 750 nm to quantify a possible degradation of the photocathode sensitivity after four years of operation in the cameras of the VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes. A sample of 20 photomultiplier tubes, which was removed from the telescopes was compared with a sample of 20 spare photomultiplier tubes, which had been kept in storage. It is found that the average photocathode sensitivity marginally increased below 300 nm and dropped by 10% to 30% above 500 nm. T…
