We describe an improved in-situ calibration of the single-photoelectron charge distributions for each of the in-ice Hamamatsu Photonics R7081-02[MOD] photomultiplier tubes in the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The characterization of the individual PMT charge distributions is important for PMT calibration, data and Monte Carlo simulation agreement, and understanding the effect of hardware differences within the detector. We discuss the single photoelectron identification procedure and how we extract the single-photoelectron charge distribution using a deconvolution of the multiple-photoelectron charge distribution.
The accurate calibration of photomultiplier tubes is critical in a wide variety of applications for which it is necessary to know the absolute number of detected photons or precisely determine the resolution of the signal. Conventional calibration methods rely on fitting the photomultiplier response to a low intensity light source with analytical approximations to the single photoelectron distribution. We show that this approach often leads to biased estimates due to an inability to model the full distribution accurately, especially at low charge values. We present a simple statistical method …
We studied the single-photoelectron detection capabilities of a multianode photomultiplier tube H8500C-03 and its performance in high magnetic field. Our results show that the device can readily resolve signals at the single photoelectron level making it suitable for photon detection in both threshold and ring imaging Cerenkov detectors. We also found that a large longitudinal magnetic field, up to 300 Gauss, induces a change in the relative output of at most 55% for an edge pixel, and of at most 15% for a central pixel. The H8500C-03 signal loss in transverse magnetic fields it is significant…
During the test measurements of the PMTs to be used in the future Borexino experiment, the data from 2200 PMT were accumulated. The unique timing characteristics of the apparatus used and the large statistics acquired, permit resololution of the fine structure of the ETL9351 PMT time response. A method to obtain the probability density function of the single photoelectron counting from the experimental data is proposed and applied to derive the PMT average characteristics. For the first time, an analytical model of the single photoelectron PMT time response is proposed, describing all the feat…
In this article, a new method is discussed for the calibration and monitoring of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). This method is based on a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and it is fast and general so that it can be used in cases where an analytical model of the PMT response is not available. The DFT approach is employed for the absolute calibration of the Hamamatsu R1408 photomultiplier tube. It should be noted that the R1408 PMTs do not show a sharp peak at the single photoelectron distribution and gain determination via conventional methods is often unattainable. Here, we show that the DFT t…
Photoelectron yields of extruded scintillation counters with titanium dioxide coating and embedded wavelength shifting fibers read out by silicon photomultipliers have been measured at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility using 120\,GeV protons. The yields were measured as a function of transverse, longitudinal, and angular positions for a variety of scintillator compositions and reflective coating mixtures, fiber diameters, and photosensor sizes. Timing performance was also studied. These studies were carried out by the Cosmic Ray Veto Group of the Mu2e collaboration as part of their R\&D program.
Measurements of double photoelectron emission (DPE) probabilities as a function of wavelength are reported for Hamamatsu R8778, R8520, and R11410 VUV-sensitive photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). In DPE, a single photon strikes the PMT photocathode and produces two photoelectrons instead of a single one. It was found that the fraction of detected photons that result in DPE emission is a function of the incident photon wavelength, and manifests itself below $\sim$250 nm. For the xenon scintillation wavelength of 175 nm, a DPE probability of 18--24\% was measured depending on the tube and measurement …
Detection of low-intensity light relies on the conversion of photons to photoelectrons, which are then multiplied and detected as an electrical signal. To measure the actual intensity of the light, one must know the factor by which the photoelectrons have been multiplied. To obtain this amplification factor, we have developed a procedure for estimating precisely the signal caused by a single photoelectron. The method utilizes the fact that the photoelectrons conform to a Poisson distribution. The average signal produced by a single photoelectron can then be estimated from the number of noise e…
Presented here are first tests of a Gaseous Photomultiplier based on a cascade of Thick GEM structures intended for gamma-ray position reconstruction in liquid Argon. The detector has a MgF$_2$ window, transparent to VUV light, and a CsI photocathode deposited on the first THGEM. A gain of $8\cdot10^{5}$ per photoelectron and $\sim100\%$ photoelectron collection efficiency are measured at stable operation settings. The excellent position resolution capabilities of the detector (better than 100 $μ$m) at 100 kHz readout rate, is demonstrated at room temperature. Structural integrity tests of the…
The IceCube Collaboration is investigating various types and manufacturers of photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for possible use in future optical modules. This report presents characterization results for two different types of HZC Photonics PMTs: the 3.5 inch XP82B20D and the 9 inch XP1805D. The results are in good agreement with the specifications as provided by the manufacturer. In addition, excellent noise behaviour is observed at the low temperatures relevant for possible use in IceCube optical modules.
During the calibration phase of the photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for the Double Chooz experiment the PMT response to light with single photoelectron (SPE) intensity was analysed. With our setup we were able to measure the combined transit time and charge response of the PMT and therefore we could deconstruct and analyse all physical effects having an influence on the PMT signal. Based on this analysis charge and time correlated probability density functions were developed to include the PMT response in a Monte Carlo simulation.
Ultra-high-energy ($>$ 100 TeV) gamma-ray detection benefits from the use of muon detectors (MDs) thanks to their capability of suppressing the cosmic-ray background. More than 1100 8-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), CR365-02-2 from Beijing Hamamatsu Photon Techniques INC. (BHP), will be deployed for the LHAASO-MD experiment. In this paper, the design of the photomultiplier base for CR365-02-2 is presented. Signals are extracted from two outputs: the anode and the 7th dynode. This design ensures a high dynamic range, from single photoelectron (SPE, peak-to-valley ratio $>$ 2), up to bunches …
A new computational model for the description of the photon detector response functions measured in conditions of low light is presented, together with examples of the observed photomultiplier signal amplitude distributions, successfully described using the parameterized model equation. In extension to the previously known approximations, the new model describes the underlying discrete statistical behavior of the photoelectron cascade multiplication processes in photon detectors with complex non-uniform gain structure of the first dynode. Important features of the model include the ability to …
A method is described that allows calibration and assessment of the linearity of response of an array of photomultiplier tubes. The method does not require knowledge of the photomultiplier single photoelectron response model and uses science data directly, thus eliminating the need for dedicated data sets. In this manner all photomultiplier working conditions (e.g. temperature, external fields, etc) are exactly matched between calibration and science acquisitions. This is of particular importance in low background experiments such as ZEPLIN-III, where methods involving the use of external ligh…

We present the precision calibration of 35 Hamamatsu R11410-22 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with xenon scintillation light centred near 175 nm. This particular PMT variant was developed specifically for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter experiment. A room-temperature xenon scintillation cell coupled to a vacuum cryostat was used to study the full-face PMT response at both room and low temperature $\textrm{($\sim$ -100$^\circ$C)}$, in particular to determine the quantum efficiency (QE) and double photoelectron emission (DPE) probability in LZ operating conditions. For our sample with an average Q…
Thin flexible sheets of high-permeability FINEMET foils encased in thin plastic layers have been used to shield various types of 20-cm-diameter photomultiplier tubes from ambient magnetic fields. In the presence of the Earth's magnetic field this type of shielding is shown to increase the collection efficiency of photoelectrons and can improve the uniformity of response of these photomultiplier tubes.
The IceCube neutrino telescope monitors one cubic kilometer of deep Antarctic ice by detecting Cherenkov photons emitted from charged secondaries produced when neutrinos interact in the ice. The geometry of the detector, which comprises a lattice of 5160 photomultipliers, is optimized for the detection of neutrinos above 100 GeV. However, at subfreezing ice temperatures, dark noise rates are low enough that a high flux of MeV neutrinos streaming through the detector may be recognized by a collective rate enhancement in all photomultipliers. This method can be used to search for the signal of c…
We present results of the detailed study of several hundred Hamamatsu H12700 Multianode Photomultiplier Tubes (MaPMTs), characterizing their response to the Cherenkov light photons in the second Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector, a part of the CLAS12 upgrade at Jefferson Lab. The total number of pixels studied was 25536. The single photoelectron spectra were measured for each pixel at different high voltages and light intensities of the laser test setup. Using the same dedicated front-end electronics as in the first RICH detector, the setup allowed us to characterize each pixel's properties such…
Signal-induced noise is observed in Hamamatsu R11265 Multianode Photomultiplier Tubes, manifesting up to several microseconds after the single photoelectron response signal and localised in specific anodes. The mean number of noise pulses varies between devices, and shows significant dependence on the applied high-voltage. The characterisation of this noise and the mitigation strategies to perform optimal single-photon counting at 40 MHz, as required by the LHCb Ring-Imaging Cherenkov detectors, are reported.

The water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) for the large high altitude air shower observatory(LHAASO) will employ more than 3600 hemisphere 8 inch photomultiplier tubes (PMT). The good time performance of PMT, especially the transit time spread (TTS), is required for WCDA. TTS is usually defined as the TTS of single photoelectron, and usually determined by using single photoelectron counting technique. A method using the photoelectron spectrum is researched for the measurement of TTS. The method is appropriate for multi-photoelectrons and makes it possible to measure the TTS of different photoe…
Future large water Cherenkov and scintillator detectors have been proposed for measurements of long baseline neutrino oscillations, proton decay, supernova and solar neutrinos. To ensure cost-effectiveness and optimize scientific reach, one of the critical requirements for such detectors are large-area, high performance photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). One candidate for such a device is the Hamamatsu R11780, a 12" PMT that is available in both standard and high quantum efficiency versions. Measurements of the single photoelectron response characteristics, relative efficiencies of the standard and…
Multi Micro-Channel-Plate Photomultiplier tubes (MCP-PMT) with High Collection Efficiency (Hi-CE) MCPs are developed and characterised. With these Hi-CE MCPs more than 90% of photoelectrons emitted from the photocathode can be detected; this is in contrast to conventional MCPs where about 50% of photoelectrons are lost at the MCP stage. The drawback of the Hi-CE MCPs is a small degradation of the transfer time spread (TTS). However for applications where no sub-ns time resolution is required the implementation of Hi-CE MCPs is extremely beneficial, as it improves the detection efficiency of th…
The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) Collaboration will carry out a direct search for weakly interacting massive particles with germanium detectors. Liquid argon will be utilized as an anti-Compton and cooling material for the germanium detectors. A low-background and large-area photomultiplier tube (PMT) immersed in liquid argon will be used to read out the light signal from the argon. In this paper we carry out a careful evaluation on the performance of the PMT operating at both room and cryogenic temperatures. Based on the single photoelectron response model, the absolute gain and resolu…
Photomultipliers are commonly used in commercial PET scanner as devices which convert light produced in scintillator by gamma quanta from positron-electron annihilation into electrical signal. For proper analysis of obtained electrical signal, a photomultiplier gain curve must be known, since gain can be significantly different even between photomultipliers of the same model. In this article we describe single photoelectron method used for photomultipliers calibration applied for J-PET scanner, a novel PET detector being developed at the Jagiellonian University. Description of calibration meth…
Current and future neutrino and direct detection dark matter experiments hope to take advantage of improving technologies in photon detection. Many of these detectors are large, monolithic optical detectors that use relatively low-cost, large-area, and efficient photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). A candidate PMT for future experiments is a newly developed prototype Hamamatsu PMT, the R5912-MOD. In this paper we describe measurements made of the single photoelectron time and charge response of the R5912-MOD, as well as detail some direct comparisons to similar PMTs. Additionally, a 1D scan of the ph…
A light yield of 20.4 $\pm$ 0.8 photoelectrons/keV was achieved with an undoped CsI crystal coupled directly to a photomultiplier tube at 77 Kelvin. This is by far the largest yield in the world achieved with CsI crystals. An energy threshold that is several times lower than the current dark matter experiments utilizing CsI(Tl) crystals may be achievable using this technique. Together with novel CsI crystal purification methods, the technique may be used to improve the sensitivities of dark matter and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments. Also measured were the scintillatio…

The Hamamatsu R7725 is candidate for the scintillation detector photomultiplier. The characteristics of the PMT will directly affects the time and energy resolution, d…
We report on the progress in characterization of the Hamamatsu model R11410-21 Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for XENON1T dark matter experiment. The absolute quantum efficiency (QE) of the PMT was measured at low temperatures down to -110 $^0$C (a typical the PMT operation temperature in liquid xenon detectors) in a spectral range from 154.5 nm to 400 nm. At -110 $^0$C the absolute QE increased by 10-15\% at 175 nm compared to that measured at room temperature. A new low power consumption, low radioactivity voltage divider for the PMTs is being developed. The measurement results showed that the…
Based on test-beam measurements, we study the response of a liquid-scintillator detector equipped with wavelength-shifting optical modules, that are proposed e.g. for the IceCube experiment and the SHiP experiment, and adiabatic light guides that are viewed either by a photomultiplier tube or by an array of silicon photomultipliers. We report on the efficiency, the time resolution and the detector response to different particle types and point out potential ways to improve the detector performance.
The new hemispherical photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with 9 inch diameter from Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co.,Ltd (HZC) have been studied. Narrow transit time spread (FWHM=2.35 ns) accompanied by small nonlinearity (750 photoelectrons at 5%) and high gain (1E7 ) with good single photoelectron (PE) resolution have been observed. 11 PMTs of this type are deployed and studied in the prototype detector for JUNO at IHEP, China.
This paper presents a low noise amplifier for large arrays of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) operated in cryogenic environments, especially liquid argon (87 K) and liquid nitrogen (77 K). The goal is for one amplifier to read out a total photosensitive surface of tens of cm$^2$ while retaining the capability to resolve single photoelectron signals. Due to the large capacitance of SiPMs, typically a few nF per cm$^2$, the main contributor to noise is the series (voltage) component. A silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) was selected as the input device of the cryogenic am…
A Python program has been developed which fits a published detector-response model to SiPM charge spectra to characterise SiPMs. Spectra for SiPMs illuminated by low intensity pulsed light with Poisson-distributed number of photons and a time spread of order nanoseconds or less, can be analysed. The entire charge spectra, including the intervals in-between the photoelectron peaks, are fitted, which allows determining, in addition to the mean number of detected photons, gain, gain spread, prompt cross-talk, pedestal, and electronics noise, the dark-count rate as well as the probability and time…

Consisting of 24 small photomultipliers arranged inside a pressure vessel, the mDOM features a large sensitive area distributed nearly ho…
Large-area PhotoMultiplier Tubes (PMT) allow to efficiently instrument Liquid Scintillator (LS) neutrino detectors, where large target masses are pivotal to compensate for neutrinos' extremely elusive nature. Depending on the detector light yield, several scintillation photons stemming from the same neutrino interaction are likely to hit a single PMT in a few tens/hundreds of nanoseconds, resulting in several photoelectrons (PEs) to pile-up at the PMT anode. In such scenario, the signal generated by each PE is entangled to the others, and an accurate PMT charge reconstruction becomes challengi…

We report on the methods developed for in-situ characterization and monitoring of DEAP's 255 R5912-HQE PMTs. This includes a detailed discussion of typical measured single-photoelectron charge distributions, correlated noise (afterpulsing), dark noise, double, and late pulsing characteristics. The characterization is performed durin…
In this study, we evaluate and compare the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) performance of multipixel photon counters (MPPCs, also known as silicon photomultiphers - SiPMs) with that of a typical photomultiplier tube (PMT) when testing using CsI(Tl) scintillators. We use the charge comparison method, whereby we discriminate different types of particles by the ratio of charges integrated within two time-gates (the delayed part and the entire digitized waveform). For a satisfactory PSD performance, a setup should generate many photoelectrons (p.e.) and collect their charges efficiently. The PMT …

We present a model for the Global Quantum Efficiency (GQE) of the MicroBooNE optical units. An optical unit consists of a flat, circular acrylic plate, coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB), positioned near the photocathode of a 20.2-cm diameter photomultiplier tube. The plate converts the ultra-violet scintillation photons from liquid argon into visible-spectrum photons to which the cryogenic phototubes are sensitive. The GQE is the convolution of the efficiency of the plates that convert the 128 nm scintillation light from liquid argon to visible light, the efficiency of the shifted light …
A new hybrid experiment has been constructed to measure the chemical composition of cosmic rays around the "knee" in the wide energy range by the Tibet AS$γ$ collaboration at Tibet, China, since 2014. They consist of a high-energy air-shower-core array (YAC-II), a high-density air-shower array (Tibet-III) and a large underground water-Cherenkov muon-detector array (MD). In order to obtain the primary proton, helium and iron spectra and their "knee" positions in the energy range lower than $10^{16}$ eV, each of PMTs equipped to the MD cell is required to measure the number of photons capable of…

Two thousand PMTs along with their readout systems are arranged on the focal plane of each telescope, with one readout system per 7-PMT cluster. The Cherenkov light pulses generated by the air showers are detected by the PMTs and amplified in a compact, low noise and wide dynamic range gain block. The output of this block is then digitized at a sampling rate of the order of GHz using the Domino Ring Sampler DRS4, an analog memory ASIC developed at P…

The cubic-kilometre neutrino telescope, which consists of large-scale 3D-arrays of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) currently under construction on the Mediterranean seabed, relies on accurate calibration procedures in order to answer its science goals. These proceedings present the gain calibration method used in KM3NeT, which is based on highly compressed PMT hit information. In particular, it is shown that the PMT gains can be tuned to within 2% of the nominal value, based on the measured single photoelectron time-over-threshold distribution of each PMT.
The linearity of charge response is an important feature of photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for physics measurements, especially the newly developed 20" MCP-PMT. In this paper, in addition to the traditional method of double light sources, we applied another relative method of 20" PMT to 3" PMT to measure the linearity of the 20" dynode and MCP PMTs in pulse mode with a waveform digitizer. The measurements show a good linear response of 20" PMTs to 1,000 photoelectrons (p.e.). The correlations of the amplitude, rise-time, fall-time, FWHM, baseline recovery, overshoot, and late-pulse to the output …
A new application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), the high-speed charge-to-time converter (QTC) IWATSU CLC101, provides three channels, each consisting of preamplifier, discriminator, low-pass filter, and charge integration circuitry, optimized for the waveform of a photomultiplier tube (PMT). This ASIC detects PMT signals using individual built-in discriminators and drives output timing signals whose width represents the integrated charge of the PMT signal. Combined with external input circuits composed of passive elements, the QTC provides full analog signal processing for the detector's…
In neutrino experiments, hemispherical photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are often used to cover large surfaces or volumes to maximize the photocathode coverage with a minimum number of channels. Instrumentation is often coarse, and neutrino event reconstruction and particle identification (PID) is usually done through the morphology of PMT hits. In future neutrino experiments, it may be desirable to perform PID from a few hits, or even a single hit, by utilizing pulse shape information. In this report, we study the principle of pulse shape PID using a single 10-inch hemispherical PMT in a spherica…
