We present an overview of the notions of exact sequences of Hopf algebras and tensor categories and their connections. We also present some examples illustrating their main features; these include simple fusion categories and a natural question regarding composition series of finite tensor categories.
We introduce Hopf categories enriched over braided monoidal categories. The notion is linked to several recently developed notions in Hopf algebra theory, such as Hopf group (co)algebras, weak Hopf algebras and duoidal categories. We generalize the fundamental theorem for Hopf modules and some of its applications to Hopf categories.
Let H be a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra. We give a description of the tensor product of bimodule categories over Rep(H). When the bimodule categories are invertible this description can be given explicitly. We present some consequences of this description in the case H is a pointed Hopf algebra.
This is a survey on spherical Hopf algebras. We give criteria to decide when a Hopf algebra is spherical and collect examples. We discuss tilting modules as a mean to obtain a fusion subcategory of the non-degenerate quotient of the category of representations of a suitable Hopf algebra.
We show that all possible categories of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over a quasi-Hopf algebra $H$ are isomorphic. We prove also that the category $\yd^{\rm fd}$ of finite dimensional left Yetter-Drinfeld modules is rigid and then we compute explicitly the canonical isomorphisms in $\yd^{\rm fd}$. Finally, we show that certain duals of $H_0$, the braided Hopf algebra introduced in \cite{bn,bpv}, are isomorphic as braided Hopf algebras if $H$ is a finite dimensional triangular quasi-Hopf algebra.
We investigate the equivariant and Hopf-cyclic cohomology of module algebras over Hopf algebroids and derive their Morita invariance. For this, we use the tools developed by McCarthy for $k$-linear categories and subsequently by Kaygun and Khalkhali for a certain class of categories, called as $H$-categories, for a Hopf algebra $H$.
A quasi-Hopf algebra $H$ can be seen as a commutative algebra $A$ in the centre $\mathcal Z(H-Mod)$ of $H-Mod$. We show that the category of $A$-modules in $\mathcal Z(H-Mod)$ is equivalent (as a monoidal category) to $H-Mod$. This can be regarded as a generalization of the structure theorem of Hopf bimodules of a Hopf algebra to the quasi-Hopf setting.
Let $H$ be a Hopf quasigroup with bijective antipode and let $Aut_{HQG}(H)$ be the set of all Hopf quasigroup automorphisms of $H$. We introduce a category ${_{H}\mathcal{YDQ}^{H}}(α,β)$ with $α,β\in Aut_{HQG}(H)$ and construct a braided $T$-category $\mathcal{YDQ}(H)$ having all the categories ${_{H}\mathcal{YDQ}^{H}}(α,β)$ as components.
For any finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ we construct a group homomorphism $\biga(H)\to \text{BrPic}(\Rep(H))$, from the group of equivalence classes of $H$-biGalois objects to the group of equivalence classes of invertible exact $\Rep(H)$-bimodule categories. We discuss the injectivity of this map. We exemplify in the case $H=T_q$ is a Taft Hopf algebra and for this we classify all exact indecomposable $\Rep(T_q)$-bimodule categories.
In this paper, we define and study weak monoidal Hom-Hopf algebras, which generalize both weak Hopf algebras and monoidal Hom-Hopf algebras. If $H$ is a weak monoidal Hom-Hopf algebra with bijective antipode and let $Aut_{wmHH}(H)$ be the set of all automorphisms of $H$. Then we introduce a category ${_{H}\mathcal{WMHYD}^{H}}(α,β)$ with $α,β\in Aut_{wmHH}(H)$ and construct a braided $T$-category $\mathcal{WMHYD}(H)$ that having all the categories ${_{H}\mathcal{WMHYD}^{H}}(α,β)$ as components.
Hopf algebroids are generalization of Hopf algebras over non-commutative base rings. It consists of a left- and a right-bialgebroid structure related by a map called the antipode. However, if the base ring of a Hopf algebroid is commutative one does not necessarily have a Hopf algebra. Meanwhile, a Hopf category is the categorification of a Hopf algebra. It consists of a category enriched over a braided monoidal category such that every hom-set carries a coalgebra structure together with an antipode functor. In this article, we will introduce the notion of a topological Hopf category$-$ a smal…
We study versions of the categories of Yetter-Drinfel'd modules over a Hopf algebra $H$ in a braided monoidal category $\C$. Contrarywise to Bespalov's approach, all our structures live in $\C$. This forces $H$ to be transparent or equivalently to lie in Müger's center $\Z_2(\C)$ of $\C$. We prove that versions of the categories of Yetter-Drinfel'd modules in $\C$ are braided monoidally isomorphic to the categories of (left/right) modules over the Drinfel'd double $D(H)\in\C$ for $H$ finite. We obtain that these categories polarize into two disjoint groups of mutually isomorphic braided monoid…
Given an action of a finite group G on a fusion category C we give a criterion for the category of G-equivariant objects in C to be group-theoretical, i.e., to be categorically Morita equivalent to a category of group-graded vector spaces. We use this criterion to answer affirmatively the question about existence of non group-theoretical semisimple Hopf algebras asked by P. Etingof, V. Ostrik, and the author in math/0203060. Namely, we show that certain Z/2Z-equivariantizations of fusion categories constructed by D. Tambara and S. Yamagami are equivalent to representation categories of non gro…
We present examples of color Hopf algebras, i.e. Hopf algebras in color categories (braided tensor categories with braiding induced by a bicharacter on an abelian group), related with quantum doubles of pointed Hopf algebras. We also discuss semisimple color Hopf algebras.
One of the most fundamental problems in the theory of finite- dimensional Hopf algebras is their classification over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. This problem is extremely difficult, hence people restrict it to certain classes of Hopf algebras, e.g. to semisimple ones. Semisimple Hopf algebras deserve to be considered as "quantum" analogue of finite groups, but even so, the problem remains extremely hard (even in low dimensions) and very little is known. A great boost to the theory of Hopf algebras was given by Drinfeld who invented the fundamental class of (quasi)trian…
We use a version of Haboush's theorem over complete local Noetherian rings to prove faithfulness of the lifting for semisimple cosemisimple Hopf algebras and separable (braided, symmetric) fusion categories from characteristic $p$ to characteristic zero (arXiv/math:0203060, Section 9), showing that, moreover, any isomorphism between such structures can be reduced modulo $p$. This fills a gap in arXiv/math:0203060, Subsection 9.3. We also show that lifting of semisimple cosemisimple Hopf algebras is a fully faithful functor, and prove that lifting induces an isomorphism on Picard and Brauer-Pic…
Any finite-dimensional Hopf algebra H is Frobenius and the stable category of H-modules is triangulated monoidal. To H-comodule algebras we assign triangulated module-categories over the stable category of H-modules. These module-categories are generalizations of homotopy and derived categories of modules over a differential graded algebra. We expect that, for suitable H, our construction could be a starting point in the program of categorifying quantum invariants of 3-manifolds.
We develop the theory of weak bimonoids in braided monoidal categories and show them to be quantum categories in a certain sense. Weak Hopf monoids are shown to be quantum groupoids. Each separable Frobenius monoid R leads to a weak Hopf monoid R \otimes R.
Hopf (bi-)modules and crossed modules over a bialgebra B in a braided monoidal category C are considered. The (braided) monoidal equivalence of both categories is proved provided B is a Hopf algebra (with invertible antipode). Bialgebra projections and Hopf bimodule bialgebras over a Hopf algebra in C are found to be isomorphic categories. As a consequence a generalization of the Radford-Majid criterion for a braided Hopf algebra to be a cross product is obtained. The results of this paper turn out to be fundamental for the construction of (bicovariant) differential calculi on braided Hopf alg…
We propose a new mwthod of constructing 4D-TQFTs. The method uses a new type of algebraic structure called a Hopf Category. We also outline the construction of a family of Hopf categories related to the quantum groups, using the canonical bases.
We study integrals of Hopf monoids in duoidal endohom categories of naturally Frobenius map monoidales in monoidal bicategories. We prove two Maschke type theorems, relating the separability of the underlying monoid and comonoid, respectively, to the existence of normalized integrals. It covers the examples provided by Hopf monoids in braided monoidal categories, weak Hopf algebras, Hopf algebroids over central base algebras, Hopf monads on autonomous monoidal categories and Hopf categories.
This is an introduction for algebraists to the theory of algebras and Hopf algebras in braided categories. Such objects generalise super-algebras and super-Hopf algebras, aswell as colour-Lie algebras. Basic facts about braided categories C are recalled, the modules and comodules of Hopf algebras in such categories are studied, the notion of `braided -commutative' or `braided-cocommutative' Hopf algebras (braided groups) is reviewed and a fully diagrammatic proof of the reconstruction theorem for a braided group aut(C) is given. The theory has important implications for the theory of quasitrian…
In [1] a new notion of Hopf algebroid has been introduced. It was shown to be inequivalent to the structure introduced under the same name in [17]. We review this new notion of Hopf algebroid. We prove that two Hopf algebroids are isomorphic as bialgebroids if and only if their antipodes are related by a `twist' i.e. are deformed by the analogue of a character. A precise relation to weak Hopf algebras is given. After the review of the integral theory of Hopf algebroids we show how a right bialgebroid can be made a Hopf algebroid in the presence of a non-degenerate left integral. This can be in…
With the motivation of giving a more precise estimation of the quantum Brauer group of a Hopf algebra $H$ over a field $k$ we construct an exact sequence containing the quantum Brauer group of a Hopf algebra in a certain braided monoidal category. Let $B$ be a Hopf algebra in $\C=_H ^H\YD$, the category of Yetter-Drinfel'd modules over $H$. We consider the quantum Brauer group $\BQ(\C; B)$ of $B$ in $\C$, which is isomorphic to the usual quantum Brauer group $\BQ(k; B\rtimes H)$ of the Radford biproduct Hopf algebra $B\rtimes H$. We show that under certain symmetricity condition on the braidin…
Let $\k$ be a field and $Q$ a minimal Hopf quiver, i.e., a cyclic quiver or the infinite linear quiver, and let $\rep^{ln}(Q)$ denote the category of locally nilpotent finite dimensional $\k$-representations of $Q.$ The category $\rep^{ln}(Q)$ has natural tensor structures induced from graded Hopf structures on the path coalgebra $\k Q.$ Tensor categories of the form $\rep^{ln} (Q)$ are an interesting class of tame hereditary pointed tensor categories which are not finite. The aim of this paper is to compute the Clebsch-Gordan formulae and Green rings of such tensor categories.
By studying ``points of the underlying quantum groups''of coquasitriangular Hopf (face) algebras, we construct ribbon categories for each lattice models without spectral parameter of both vertex and face type. Also, we give a classification of the braiding and the ribbon structure on quantized classical groups and modular tensor categories closely related to quantum SU(N)_L-invariants of 3-manifolds.
We develop some techniques to the study of exact module categories over some families of pointed finite-dimensional Hopf algebras. As an application we classify exact module categories over the tensor category of representations of the small quantum groups $u_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$.
We develop abstract nonsense for module categories over monoidal categories (this is a straightforward categorification of modules over rings). As applications we show that any semisimple monoidal category with finitely many simple objects is equivalent to the category of representations of a weak Hopf algebra (theorem of T. Hayashi) and classify module categories over the fusion category of $\hat{sl}(2)$ at a positive integer level where we meet once again ADE classification pattern.
We introduce the notion of `bar category' by which we mean a monoidal category equipped with additional structure formalising the notion of complex conjugation. Examples of our theory include bimodules over a $*$-algebra, modules over a conventional $*$-Hopf algebra and modules over a more general object which call a `quasi-$*$-Hopf algebra' and for which examples include the standard quantum groups $u_q(g)$ at $q$ a root of unity (these are well-known not to be a usual $*$-Hopf algebra). We also provide examples of strictly quasiassociative bar categories, including modules over `$*$-quasiHop…
We study the basic monoidal properties of the category of Hopf modules for a coquasi Hopf algebra. In particular we discuss the so called fundamental theorem that establishes a monoidal equivalence between the category of comodules and the category of Hopf modules. We present a categorical proof of Radford's $S^4$ formula for the case of a finite dimensional coquasi Hopf algebra, by establishing a monoidal isomorphism between certain double dual functors.
We extend the formalism of Hopf cyclic cohomology to the context of braided categories. For a Hopf algebra in a braided monoidal abelian category we introduce the notion of stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld module. We associate a para-cocyclic and a cocyclic object to a braided Hopf algebra endowed with a braided modular pair in involution in the sense of Connes and Moscovici. When the braiding is symmetric the full formalism of Hopf cyclic cohomology with coefficients can be extended to our categorical setting.
We determine the structure of Hopf algebra extensions of a group algebra by the cyclic group of order 2. We study the corepresentation theory of such Hopf algebras, which provide a generalization, at the Hopf algebra level, of the so called Tambara-Yamagami fusion categories. As a byproduct, we show that every semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension $<36$ is necessarily group-theoretical; thus 36 is the smallest possible dimension where a non group-theoretical example occurs.
The notion of inner linear Hopf algebra is a generalization of the notion of discrete linear group. In this paper, we prove two general results that enable us to enlarge the class of Hopf algebras that are known to be inner linear: the first one is a characterization by using the Hopf dual, while the second one is a stability result under extensions. We also discuss the related notion of inner unitary Hopf *-algebra.
We introduce and study Hopf monads on autonomous categories (i.e., monoidal categories with duals). Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to a non-braided (and non-linear) setting. Indeed, any monoidal adjunction between autonomous categories gives rise to a Hopf monad. We extend many fundamental results of the theory of Hopf algebras (such as the decomposition of Hopf modules, the existence of integrals, Maschke's criterium of semisimplicity, etc...) to Hopf monads. We also introduce and study quasitriangular and ribbon Hopf monads (again defined in a non-braided setting).
Aguiar and Mahajan's bimonoids A in a duoidal category M are studied. Under certain assumptions on M, the Fundamental Theorem of Hopf Modules is shown to hold for A if and only if the unit of A determines an A-Galois extension. Our findings are applied to the particular examples of small groupoids and of Hopf algebroids over a commutative base algebra.
In our previous work, Hopf cyclic cohomology in braided monoidal categories, we extended the formalism of Hopf cyclic cohomology due to Connes and Moscovici and the more general case of Hopf cyclic cohomology with coefficients to the context of abelian braided monoidal categories. In this paper we go one step further in reducing the restriction of the ambient category being symmetric. We let the ambient category to be non-symmetric but assume only the restriction on the braid map for the Hopf algebra object (in that category) which is the main player in the theory. In the case of Hopf cyclic c…
In this paper we introduce the notions of cleft and Galois (with normal basis) extension associated to a weak Hopf quasigroup. We show that, under suitable conditions, both notions are equivalent. As a particular instance we recover the classical results for (weak) Hopf algebras. Moreover, taking into account that weak Hopf quasigroups generalize the notion of Hopf quasigroup, we obtain the definitions of cleft and Galois (with normal basis) extension associated to a Hopf quasigroup and we get the equivalence betwen these extensions in this setting.
G-equivariant modular categories provide the input for a standard method to construct 3d homotopy field theories. Virelizier constructed a G-equivariant category from the action of a group G on a Hopf algebra H by Hopf algebra automorphisms. The neutral component of his category is the Drinfeld center of the category of H-modules. We generalize this construction to weak actions of a group G on an arbitrary monoidal category C by (possibly non-strict) monoidal auto-equivalences and obtain a G-equivariant category with neutral component the Drinfeld center of C.
We explain that a new theorem of Deligne on symmetric tensor categories implies, in a straightforward manner, that any finite dimensional triangular Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero has Chevalley property, and in particular the list of finite dimensional triangular Hopf algebras over such a field given in math.QA/0008232, math.QA/0101049 is complete. We also use Deligne's theorem to settle a number of questions about triangular Hopf algebras, raised in our previous publications, and generalize Deligne's result to nondegenerate semisimple categories in char…
We define Hopf monads on an arbitrary monoidal category, extending the definition given previously for monoidal categories with duals. A Hopf monad is a bimonad (or opmonoidal monad) whose fusion operators are invertible. This definition can be formulated in terms of Hopf adjunctions, which are comonoidal adjunctions with an invertibility condition. On a monoidal category with internal Homs, a Hopf monad is a bimonad admitting a left and a right antipode. Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to the non-braided setting. They also generalize Hopf algebroids (which are linear Hopf monads on a cat…
We define two-cocycles and cleft extensions in categories that are not necessarily braided, but where specific objects braid from one direction, like for a Hopf algebra $H$ a Yetter-Drinfeld module braids from the left with $H$-modules. We will generalize classical results to this context and give some application for the categories of Yetter-Drinfeld modules and $H$-modules. In particular we will describe liftings of coradically graded Hopf algebras in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules with these techniques.
Given a finite dimensional Hopf algebra H and an exact indecomposable module category M over Rep(H), we explicitly compute the adjoint algebra A_M as an object in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over H, and the space of class functions CF(M) associated to M, as introduced by K. Shimizu [ Further results on the structure of (Co)ends in fintite tensor categories, preprint arXiv:1801.02493]. We use our construction to describe these algebras when H is a group algebra and a dual group algebra. This result allows us to compute the adjoint algebra for certain group-theoretical fusion categor…
We focus on the problem of producing new modular tensor categories from Hopf algebras. To do this, we first give a general method to construct factorizable Hopf algebras. Then we apply the method to construct two families of ribbon factorizable Hopf algebras which are not quantum groups or Drinfel'd double. One family are point Hopf algebras which give non-semisimple modular tensor categories, while the other family are C^*-Hopf algebras which give new unitary modular tensor categories. Lastly, we determine the fusion rings of these unitary modular tensor categories.
In this paper we provide a complete classification of fusion categories of Frobenius-Perron (FP) dimension pq, where p<q are distinct primes, thus giving a categorical generalization of math.QA/9801129. As a corollary we also obtain the classification of semisimple quasi-Hopf algebras of dimension pq. A concise formulation of our main result is: Let C be a fusion category over the complex numbers of FP dimension pq. Then either p=2 and C is a Tambara-Yamagami category of dimension 2q, or C is group-theoretical in the sense of math.QA/0203060 (which easily yields the full classification). As a …
To every Hopf heap or quantum cotorsor of Grunspan a Hopf algebra of translations is associated. This translation Hopf algebra acts on the Hopf heap making it a Hopf-Galois co-object. Conversely, any Hopf-Galois co-object has the natural structure of a Hopf heap with the translation Hopf algebra isomorphic to the acting Hopf algebra. It is then shown that this assignment establishes an equivalence between categories of Hopf heaps and Hopf-Galois co-objects.
We show that indecomposable exact module categories over the category Rep H of representations of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra H are classified by left comodule algebras, H-simple from the right and with trivial coinvariants, up to equivariant Morita equivalence. Specifically, any indecomposable exact module categories is equivalent to the category of finite-dimensional modules over a left comodule algebra. This is an alternative approach to the results of Etingof and Ostrik. For this, we study the stabilizer introduced by Yan and Zhu and show that it coincides with the internal Hom. We a…
We discuss algebraic and representation theoretic structures in braided tensor categories C which obey certain finiteness conditions. Much interesting structure of such a category is encoded in a Hopf algebra H in C. In particular, the Hopf algebra H gives rise to representations of the modular group SL(2,Z) on various morphism spaces. We also explain how every symmetric special Frobenius algebra in a semisimple modular category provides additional structure related to these representations.
We introduce Hopf polyads in order to unify Hopf monads and group actions on monoidal categories. A polyad is a lax functor from a small category (its source) to the bicategory of categories, and a Hopf polyad is a comonoidal polyad whose fusion operators are invertible. The main result states that the lift of a Hopf polyad is a strong (co)monoidal action-type polyad (or strong monoidal pseudofunctor). The lift of a polyad is a new polyad having simpler structure but the same category of modules. We show that, under certain assumptions, a Hopf polyad can be `wrapped up' into a Hopf monad. This…
Starting with a self-dual Hopf algebra H in a braided monoidal category S we construct a Z/2Z-graded monoidal category C = C_0 + C_1. The degree zero component is the category Rep_S(H) of representations of H and the degree one component is the category S. The extra structure on H needed to define the associativity isomorphisms is a choice of self-duality map and cointegral, subject to certain conditions. We also describe rigid, braided and ribbon structures on C in Hopf algebraic terms. Our construction permits a uniform treatment of Tambara-Yamagami categories and categories related to sympl…
We give the construction of a class of weak Hopf algebras (or quantum groupoids) associated to a matched pair of groupoids and certain cocycle data. This generalizes a now well-known construction for Hopf algebras, first studied by G. I. Kac in the sixties. Our approach is based on the notion of double groupoids, as introduced by Ehresmann.
We introduce a notion of Hopf-Lie-Rinehart algebra and show that the universal algebra of a Hopf-Lie-Rinehart algebra acquires an ordinary Hopf algebra structure.
We prove that commutative algebras in braided tensor categories do not admit faithful Hopf algebra actions unless they come from group actions. We also show that a group action allows us to see the algebra as the regular algebra in the representation category of the acting group.
We introduce monoidal categories whose monoidal products of any positive number of factors are lax coherent and whose nullary products are oplax coherent. We call them $\mathsf{Lax}^+\mathsf{Oplax}^0$-monoidal. Dually, we consider $\mathsf{Lax}_0\mathsf{Oplax}_+$-monoidal categories which are oplax coherent for positive numbers of factors and lax coherent for nullary monoidal products. We define $\mathsf{Lax}^+_0\mathsf{Oplax}^0_+$-duoidal categories with compatible $\mathsf{Lax}^+\mathsf{Oplax}^0$- and $\mathsf{Lax}_0\mathsf{Oplax}_+$-monoidal structures. We introduce comonoids in $\mathsf{La…
We start the general structure theory of not necessarily semisimple finite tensor categories, generalizing the results in the semisimple case (i.e. for fusion categories), obtained recently in our joint work with D.Nikshych. In particular, we generalize to the categorical setting the Hopf and quasi-Hopf algebra freeness theorems due to Nichols-Zoeller and Schauenburg, respectively. We also give categorical versions of the theory of distinguished group-like elements in a finite dimensional Hopf algebra, of Lorenz's result on degeneracy of the Cartan matrix, and of the absence of primitive eleme…
We introduce a variant on the graphical calculus of Cockett and Seely for monoidal functors and illustrate it with a discussion of Tannaka reconstruction, some of which is known and some of which is new. The new portion is: given a separable Frobenius functor F: A --> B from a monoidal category A to a suitably complete or cocomplete braided autonomous category B, the usual formula for Tannaka reconstruction gives a weak bialgebra in B; if, moreover, A is autonomous, this weak bialgebra is in fact a weak Hopf algebra.
Weak (Hopf) bialgebras are described as (Hopf) bimonoids in appropriate duoidal (also known as 2-monoidal) categories. This interpretation is used to define a category wba of weak bialgebras over a given field. As an application, the "free vector space" functor from the category of small categories with finitely many objects to wba is shown to possess a right adjoint, given by taking (certain) group-like elements. This adjunction is proven to restrict to the full subcategories of groupoids and of weak Hopf algebras, respectively. As a corollary, we obtain equivalences between the category of s…
