We explore the coexistence region in the vicinity of the Mott critical end point employing a compressible cell spin-$1/2$ Ising-like model. We analyze the case for the spin-liquid candidate $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, where close to the Mott critical end point metallic puddles coexist with an insulating ferroelectric phase. Our results are fourfold: $i$) a universal divergent-like behavior of the Grüneisen parameter upon crossing the first-order transition line; $ii$) based on scaling arguments, we show that within the coexistence region, for $any$ system close to the critical point, the relaxation time is entropy-dependent; $iii$) we propose the electric Grüneisen parameter $Γ_E$, which quantifies the electrocaloric effect; $iv$) we identify the metallic/insulating coexistence region as an electronic Griffiths-like phase. Our findings suggest that $Γ_E$ governs the dielectric response close to the critical point and that an electronic Griffiths-like phase emerges in the coexistence region.
In the vicinity of a quantum critical point, quenched disorder can lead to a quantum Griffiths phase, accompanied by an exotic power-law scaling with a continuously varying dynamical exponent that diverges in the zero-temperature limit. Here, we investigate a nematic quantum critical point in the iron-based superconductor FeSe$_{0.89}$S$_{0.11}$ using applied hydrostatic pressure. We report an unusual crossing of the magnetoresistivity isotherms in the non-superconducting normal state which features a continuously varying dynamical exponent over a large temperature range. We interpret our resu…
We report magnetization ($M$) measurements close to the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition of the d-metal alloy Ni$_{1-x}$V$_x$ at a vanadium concentration of $x_c \approx 11.4 %$. In the diluted regime ($x>x_c$), the temperature ($T$) and magnetic field ($H$) dependencies of the magnetization are characterized by nonuniversal power laws and display $H/T$ scaling in a wide temperature and field range. The exponents vary strongly with $x$ and follow the predictions of a quantum Griffiths phase. We also discuss the deviations and limits of the quantum Griffiths phase as well as the phase bou…
Reply to Millis et al. on "A Tale of Two Theories: Quantum Griffiths Effects in Metallic Systems"
The nature of the correlated phases found in some graphene heterostructures is under debate. We use dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) to analyze the effect of local correlations close to half-filling on one of such systems, the ABC trilayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (ABC/hBN), which presents a moiré superlattice. This system has shown insulating phases at integer fillings of the moiré lattice, precisely the fillings at which a sufficiently strong Coulomb interaction (U$_{\rm Mott}$) may produce a metal-insulator Mott transition. Our calculations show that the electronic st…
We provide the first unbiased evidence for a higher-order topological Mott insulator in three dimensions by numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This insulating phase is adiabatically connected to a third-order topological insulator in the noninteracting limit, which features gapless modes around the corners of the pyrochlore lattice and is characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ spin-Berry phase. The difference between the correlated and non-correlated topological phases is that in the former phase the gapless corner modes emerge only in spin excitations being Mott-like. We also sho…
We study superconductivity on the honeycomb lattice close to the Mott state at half-filling. Due to the sixfold lattice symmetry and disjoint Fermi surfaces at opposite momenta, we show that several different fully gapped superconducting states naturally exist on the honeycomb lattice, of which the chiral $d+id'$-wave state has previously been shown to appear when superconductivity appears close to the Mott state. Using renormalized mean-field theory to study the t-J model and quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the Hubbard-U model we show that the $d+id'$-wave state is the favored superconduc…
Using spin-assisted ab-initio random structure searches, we explore an exhaustive quantum phase diagram of archetypal interfaced Mott insulators, i.e. lanthanum-iron and lanthanum-titanium oxides. In particular, we report that the charge transfer induced by the interfacial electronic reconstruction stabilises a high spin ferrous Fe2+ state. We provide a pathway to control the strength of correlation in this electronic state by tuning the epitaxial strain, yielding a manifold of quantum electronic phases, i.e. Mott-Hubbard, charge transfer and Slater insulating states. Furthermore we report tha…
Most Mott systems display a low-temperature phase coexistence region around the metal-insulator transition. The domain walls separating the respective phases have very recently been observed both in simulations and in experiments, displaying unusual properties. First, they often cover a significant volume fraction, thus cannot be neglected. Second, they neither resemble a typical metal nor a standard insulator, displaying unfamiliar temperature dependence of (local) transport properties. Here we take a closer look at such domain wall matter by examining an appropriate unstable solution of the …
