In these lecture notes, we address the problem of large-time asymptotic behaviour of the solutions to scalar convection-diffusion equations set in ${R}^N$. The large-time asymptotic behaviour of the solutions to many convection-diffusion equations is strongly linked with the behavior of the initial data at infinity. In fact, when the initial datum is integrable and of mass $M$, the solutions to the equations under consideration oftentimes behave like the associated self-similar profile of mass $M$, thus emphasising the role of scaling variables in these scenarios. However, these equations can also manifest other asymptotic behaviors, including weakly non-linear, linear or strongly non-linear behavior depending on the form of the convective term. We give an exhaustive presentation of several results and techniques, where we clearly distinguish the role of the spatial dimension and the form of the nonlinear convective term.

The aim of this paper is to study the $L^1$-stability of periodic stationary solutions of scalar convection-diffusion equations. We obtain dispersion in $L^2$ for all space dimensions using Kružkov type entropy. And when the space dimension is one, we estimate the number of sign changes of a solution to obtain $L^1$-stability.
We consider a convection-diffusion model with linear fractional diffusion in the sub-critical range. We prove that the large time asymptotic behavior of the solution is given by the unique entropy solution of the convective part of the equation. The proof is based on suitable a-priori estimates, among which proving an Oleinik type inequality plays a key role.
The large time behavior of zero mass solutions to the Cauchy problem for a convection-diffusion equation. We provide conditions on the size and shape of the initial datum such that the large time asymptotics of solutions is given either by the derivative of the Guass-Weierstrass kernel or by a self-similar solution or by a hyperbolic N-wave
A steady-state convection-diffusion problem with a small diffusion of order $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon)$ is considered in a thin three-dimensional graph-like junction consisting of thin cylinders connected through a domain (node) of diameter $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon),$ where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter. Using multiscale analysis, the asymptotic expansion for the solution is constructed and justified. The asymptotic estimates in the norm of Sobolev space $H^1$ as well as in the uniform norm are proved for the difference between the solution and proposed approximations with a predetermined …
We consider the numerical solution of scalar, nonlinear degenerate convection-diffusion problems with random diffusion coefficient and with random flux functions. Building on recent results on the existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of weak solutions on data in the deterministic case, we develop a definition of random entropy solution. We establish existence, uniqueness, measurability and integrability results for these random entropy solutions, generalizing \cite{Mishr478,MishSch10a} to possibly degenerate hyperbolic-parabolic problems with random data. We next address the numeric…
A steady scalar convection-diffusion problem has been studied for one and two dimensional cases. The major problem of unrealistic oscillations of the convection dominated problems is relaxed thanks to the wide range of the elements FEMLAB 3.1 benefits. The FEMLAB 3.1 solution has been presented for the problems, unique features and illustrations of the software have been used and results have been tested against analytic solution.
In this paper we consider a subcritical model that involves nonlocal diffusion and a classical convective term. In spite of the nonlocal diffusion, we obtain an Oleinik type estimate similar to the case when the diffusion is local. First we prove that the entropy solution can be obtained by adding a small viscous term $μu_{xx}$ and letting $μ\to 0$. Then, by using uniform Oleinik estimates for the viscous approximation we are able to prove the well-posedness of the entropy solutions with $L^1$-initial data. Using a scaling argument and hyperbolic estimates given by Oleinik's inequality, we obt…
In this paper we consider a nonlocal viscous Burgers equation and study the well-posedness and asymptotic behaviour of its solutions. We prove that under the smallness assumption on the initial data the solutions behave as the self similar profiles of the Burgers equation with Dirac mass as the initial datum. The first term in the asymptotic expansion of the solutions is obtained by rescaling the solutions and proving the compactness of their trajectories.
The initial value problem for the conservation law $\partial_t u+(-Δ)^{α/2}u+\nabla \cdot f(u)=0$ is studied for $α\in (1,2)$ and under natural polynomial growth conditions imposed on the nonlinearity. We find the asymptotic expansion as $|x|\to \infty$ of solutions to this equation corresponding to initial conditions, decaying sufficiently fast at infinity.
In this paper we consider a model that involves nonlocal diffusion and a classical convective term. Using a scaling argument and a new compactness argument we obtain the first term in the asymptotic behavior of the solutions.
The present contribution proves the asymptotic orbital stability of viscous regularizations of stable Riemann shocks of scalar balance laws, uniformly with respect to the viscosity/diffusion parameter $ε$. The uniformity is understood in the sense that all constants involved in the stability statements are uniform and that the corresponding multiscale $ε$-dependent topology reduces to the classical $W^{1,\infty}$-topology when restricted to functions supported away from the shock location. Main difficulties include that uniformity precludes any use of parabolic regularization to close regulari…
We develop a general framework for finding error estimates for convection-diffusion equations with nonlocal, nonlinear, and possibly degenerate diffusion terms. The equations are nonlocal because they involve fractional diffusion operators that are generators of pure jump Levy processes (e.g. the fractional Laplacian). As an application, we derive continuous dependence estimates on the nonlinearities and on the Levy measure of the diffusion term. Estimates of the rates of convergence for general nonlinear nonlocal vanishing viscosity approximations of scalar conservation laws then follow as a …
We consider a scalar parabolic equation in one spatial dimension. The equation is constituted by a convective term, a reaction term with one or two equilibria, and a positive diffusivity which can however vanish. We prove the existence and several properties of traveling-wave solutions to such an equation. In particular, we provide a sharp estimate for the minimal speed of the profiles and improve previous results about the regularity of wavefronts. Moreover, we show the existence of an infinite number of semi-wavefronts with the same speed.
We establish the convergence of statistically invariant states for the stochastic Boussinesq Equations in the infinite Prandtl number limit and in particular demonstrate the convergence of the Nusselt number (a measure of heat transport in the fluid). This is a singular parameter limit significant in mantle convection and for gasses under high pressure. The equations are subject to a both temperature gradient on the boundary and internal heating in the bulk driven by a stochastic, white in time, gaussian forcing. Here, the stochastic source terms have a strong physical motivation for example a…
We study a reaction-diffusion-convection problem with nonlinear drift posed in a domain with periodically arranged obstacles. The non-linearity in the drift is linked to the hydrodynamic limit of a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) governing a population of interacting particles crossing a domain with obstacle. Because of the imposed large drift scaling, this nonlinearity is expected to explode in the limit of a vanishing scaling parameter. As main working techniques, we employ two-scale formal homogenization asymptotics with drift to derive the corresponding upscaled model e…
We consider singularly perturbed convection-diffusion equations on one-dimensional networks (metric graphs) as well as the transport problems arising in the vanishing diffusion limit. Suitable coupling condition at inner vertices are derived that guarantee conservation of mass as well as dissipation of a mathematical energy which allows us to prove stability and well-posedness. For single intervals and appropriately specified initial conditions, it is well-known that the solutions of the convection-diffusion problem converge to that of the transport problem with order $O(\sqrtε)$ in the $L^\in…
We are concerned with the asymptotic behaviour of classical solutions of systems of the form u_t = Au_xx + f(u, u_x), x in R, t>0, u(x,t) a vector in RN, with u(x,0)= U(x), where A is a positive-definite diagonal matrix and f is a 'bistable' nonlinearity satisfying conditions which guarantee the existence of a comparison principle. Suppose that there is a travelling-front solution w with velocity c, that connects two stable equilibria of f. We show that if U is bounded, uniformly continuously differentiable and such that w(x) - U(x) is small when the modulus of x is large, then there exists y …
We report on some recent existence and uniqueness results for elliptic equations subject to Dirichlet boundary condition and involving a singular nonlinearity. We take into account the following types of problems: (i) singular problems with sublinear nonlinearity and two parameters; (ii) combined effects of asymptotically linear and singular nonlinearities in bifurcation problems; (iii) bifurcation for a class of singular elliptic problems with subquadratic convection term. In some concrete situations we also establish the asymptotic behaviour of the solution around the bifurcation point. Our …
In several space dimensions, scalar shock waves between two constant states u $\pm$ are not necessarily planar. We describe them in detail. Then we prove their asymptotic stability, assuming that they are uniformly non-characteristic. Our result is conditional for a general flux, while unconditional for the multi-D Burgers equation.
In this paper we study large time behaviors toward shock waves and rarefaction waves under periodic perturbations for 1-D convex scalar conservation laws. The asymptotic stabilities and decay rates of shock waves and rarefaction waves under periodic perturbations are proved.
In this paper we study a convection-diffusion equation on a star-shaped graph composed by $n$ incoming edges and $m$ outgoing edges with a nonlinearity $f\in C^1(\rr)$ satisfying some additional general conditions. First, we prove the global well-posedness of the solutions of the system under consideration. Next, in the particular case that the nonlinear convection is given by $\partial_x(f(u(t, x))$ with $f(s)=-a|s|^{q-1}s$ with $q\geq 2$ and $a\in \rr$ verifying $(n-m)a\geq 0$, we analyze the long time behavior of the solutions. For $q> 2$ we find that the asymptotic behavior of the solution…
We prove an asymptotic stability result for a linear coupled hyperbolic-elliptic system on a large class of singular background spacetimes in CMC gauge on the n-torus. At each spatial point these background spacetimes are perturbations of Kasner-like solutions of the Einstein-scalar field equations which are not required to be close to the homogeneous and isotropic case. We establish the existence of a homeomorphism between Cauchy data for this system and a set of functions naturally associated with the asymptotics in the contracting direction, which we refer to as asymptotic data. This yields…
We study the prescribed scalar curvature problem, namely finding which function can be obtained as the scalar curvature of a metric in a given conformal class. We deal with the case of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds and restrict ourselves to non positive prescribed scalar curvature. Following earlier results, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition on the zero set of the prescribed scalar curvature so that the problem admits a (unique) solution.
