In this paper we study the motion of a surface gravity wave with viscosity. In particular we prove two well-posedness results. On the one hand, we establish the local solvability in Sobolev spaces for arbitrary dissipation. On the other hand, we establish the global well-posedness in Wiener spaces for a sufficiently large viscosity. These results are the first rigorous proofs of well-posedness for the Dias, Dyachenko \& Zakharov system ({\em Physics Letters A} 2008) modelling gravity waves with viscosity when surface tension is not taken into account.
Starting from the paper by Dias, Dyachenko and Zakharov (\emph{Physics Letters A, 2008}) on viscous water waves, we derive a model that describes water waves with viscosity moving in deep water with or without surface tension effects. This equation takes the form of a nonlocal fourth order wave equation and retains the main contributions to the dynamics of the free surface. Then, we prove the well-posedness in Sobolev spaces of such equation.
In order to find a better physical model to describe the large-scale cloud-water transformation and rainfall, we consider a moist atmosphere model consisting of the primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity in the dynamic equation and a set of humidity equations describing water vapor, rain water and cloud condensates. To overcome difficulties caused by the absence of vertical viscosity in the dynamic equation, we get the local existence of $v$ in $H^{1}$ space by combining the viscous elimination method and the $z-$weak solution method and using the generalized Bihari-Lasalle inequal…
The motion of the free surface of an incompressible fluid is a very active research area. Most of these works examine the case of an inviscid fluid. However, in several practical applications, there are instances where the viscous damping needs to be considered. In this paper we derive and study a new asymptotic model for the motion of unidirectional viscous water waves. In particular, we establish the global well-posedness in Sobolev spaces. Furthermore, we also establish the global well-posedness and decay of a fourth order PDE modelling bidirectional water waves with viscosity moving in dee…
We develop three asymptotic models of surface waves in a non-newtonian fluid with odd viscosity. This viscosity is also known as Hall viscosity and appears in a number of applications such as quantum Hall fluids or chiral active fluids. Besides the odd viscosity effects, these models capture both gravity and capillary forces up to quadratic interactions and take the form of nonlinear and nonlocal wave equations. Two of these models describe bidirectional waves while the third PDE studies the case of unidirectional propagation. We also prove the well-posedness of these asymptotic models in spac…
We prove existence of standing waves for two quantum hydrodynamics systems with linear and nonlinear viscosity. Moreover, global existence of traveling waves is proved for the former without restrictions on the viscosity and dispersion parameters, thanks to a suitable Lyapunov function. This is an improvement with respect to the global existence result in \cite{LMZ2020}, where it was required that the viscosity is sufficiently strong.
The vanishing viscosity limit of the two-dimensional (2D) compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is studied in the case that the corresponding 2D inviscid Euler equations admit a planar rarefaction wave solution. It is proved that there exists a family of smooth solutions for the 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations converging to the planar rarefaction wave solution with arbitrary strength for the 2D Euler equations. A uniform convergence rate is obtained in terms of the viscosity coefficients away from the initial time. In the proof, the hyperbolic wave is crucially introduced to …
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of heat-conductive ideal gas without viscosity. We show that, for the non-viscous case, if the strengths of the wave patterns and the initial perturbation are suitably small, the unique global-in-time solution exists and asymptotically tends toward the corresponding the viscous contact wave or the composition of a viscous contact wave with rarefaction waves determined by the initial condition, which extended the results by Huang-Li-Matsumura[13], where they treated the viscous and heat-conductive ideal gas.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the viscosity is of non-Newtonian type, including a pseudo-plastic case. When the corresponding Riemann problem for the hyperbolic part admits a Riemann solution which consists of single rarefaction wave, under a condition on nonlinearity of the viscosity, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the rarefaction wave as time goes to infinity, without any smallne…
In this paper we study existence of traveling waves for 1-D compressible Euler system with dispersion (which models quantum effects through the Bohm potential) and nonlinear viscosity in the context of quantum hydrodynamic models for superfluidity. The existence of profiles is proved for appropriate (super- or sub- sonic) end states defining Lax shocks for the underlying Euler system formulated in terms of density and velocity without restrictions for the viscosity and dispersion parameters. On the other hand, the interplay of the dispersion and the viscosity plays a crucial role in proving th…
The aim of this work is to make a further step towards the understanding of the near-critical reflection of internal gravity waves from a slope in the more general and realistic context where the size of viscosity $ν$ and the size of diffusivity $κ$ are different. In particular, we provide a systematic characterization of boundary layers (boundary layer wave packets) decays and sizes depending on the order of magnitude of viscosity and diffusivity. We can construct an $L^2$ stable approximate solution to the linear near-critical reflection problem under the scaling assumption of Dauxois \& You…
We study several mathematical aspects of a system of equations modelling the interaction between short waves, described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and long waves, described by the equations of magnetohydrodynamics for a compressible, heat conductive fluid. The system in question models an aurora-type phenomenon, where a short wave propagates along the streamlines of a magnetohydrodynamic medium. We focus on the one dimensional (planar) version of the model and address the problem of well posedness as well as convergence of the sequence of solutions as the bulk viscosity tends to zero…
We are concerned with the large time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional compressible micropolar fluid model without viscosity, where the far-field states of the initial data are prescribed to be different. If the corresponding Riemann problem of the compressible Euler system admits a contact discontinuity and two rarefaction waves solutions, we show that for such a non-viscous model, the combination of the viscous contact wave with two rarefaction waves is time-asymptotically stable provided that the strength of the composite wave and the initial perturbation ar…
In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density dependent viscous coefficient in the presence of the shock wave. Given a shock wave to the corresponding Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the shock wave as the viscosity tends to zero. The proof is given by an elementary energy method.
Following a general principle introduced by Ehrnström et.al. we prove that for an equation modeling the free surface evolution of moderate amplitude waves in shallow water, all symmetric waves are traveling waves.
We give a quite simple approach how to prove the absence of loops in bifurcation branches of water waves in rotational case with arbitrary vorticity distribution. The supporting flow may contain stagnation points and critical layers and water surface is allowed to be overhanging. Monotonicity properties of the free surface are presented. Especially simple criterium of absence of loops is given for bifurcation branches when the bifurcation parameter is the water wave period. We show that there are no loops if you start from a water wave with a positive/negative vertical component of velocity on…
