In this paper we study existence of traveling waves for 1-D compressible Euler system with dispersion (which models quantum effects through the Bohm potential) and nonlinear viscosity in the context of quantum hydrodynamic models for superfluidity. The existence of profiles is proved for appropriate (super- or sub- sonic) end states defining Lax shocks for the underlying Euler system formulated in terms of density and velocity without restrictions for the viscosity and dispersion parameters. On the other hand, the interplay of the dispersion and the viscosity plays a crucial role in proving the existence of oscillatory profiles, showing in this way how the dispersion plays a significant role in certain regimes. Numerical experiments are also provided to analyze the sensitivity of such profiles with respect to the viscosity/dispersion terms and with respect to the nearness to vacuum.
We prove existence of standing waves for two quantum hydrodynamics systems with linear and nonlinear viscosity. Moreover, global existence of traveling waves is proved for the former without restrictions on the viscosity and dispersion parameters, thanks to a suitable Lyapunov function. This is an improvement with respect to the global existence result in \cite{LMZ2020}, where it was required that the viscosity is sufficiently strong.
We establish instability of periodic traveling waves arising in conservation laws featuring phase transition. The analysis uses the Evans function framework introduced by R.A. Gardner in the periodic case. The main new tool is a periodic generalization of the stability index introduced by Gardner and Zumbrun in the traveling front or pulse case.
In this paper we investigate spectral stability of traveling wave solutions to 1-$D$ quantum hydrodynamics system with nonlinear viscosity in the $(ρ,u)$, that is, density and velocity, variables. We derive a sufficient condition for the stability of the essential spectrum and we estimate the maximum modulus of eigenvalues with non-negative real part. In addition, we present numerical computations of the Evans function in sufficiently large domain of the unstable half-plane and show numerically that its winding number is (approximately) zero, thus giving a numerical evidence of point spectrum …
This paper studies the stability of weak dispersive shock profiles for a quantum hydrodynamics system in one space dimension with nonlinear viscosity and dispersive (quantum) effects due to a Bohm potential. It is shown that, if the shock amplitude is sufficiently small, then the profiles are spectrally stable. This analytical result is consistent with numerical estimations of the location of the spectrum (Lattanzio, Zhelyazov, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 31, 2021). The proof is based on energy estimates at the spectral level, on the choice of an appropriate weighted energy function for th…
The aim is to assess the combined effect of diffusion and dispersion on shocks in the moderate dispersion regime. For a diffusive dispersive approximation of the equations of one-dimensional elasticity (or p-system), we study convergence of traveling waves to shocks. The problem is recast as a Hamiltonian system with small friction, and an analysis of the length of oscillations yields convergence in the moderate dispersion regime $\eps, δ\to 0$ with $δ= o(\eps)$, under hypotheses that the limiting shock is admissible according to the Liu E-condition and is not a contact discontinuity at either…
A compressible viscous-dispersive Euler system in one space dimension in the context of quantum hydrodynamics is considered. The dispersive term is due to quantum effects described through the Bohm potential and the viscosity term is of linear type. It is shown that small-amplitude viscous-dispersive shock profiles for the system under consideration are spectrally stable, proving in this fashion a previous numerical observation by Lattanzio et al. (Phys. D 402, 2020, p. 132222; Appl. Math. Comput. 385, 2020, p. 125450). The proof is based on spectral energy estimates which profit from the mono…
We study a Follow-the-Leader (FtL) ODE model for traffic flow with rough road condition, and analyze stationary traveling wave profiles where the solutions of the FtL model trace along, near the jump in the road condition. We derive a discontinuous delay differential equation (DDDE) for these profiles. For various cases, we obtain results on existence, uniqueness and local stability of the profiles. The results here offer an alternative approximation, possibly more realistic than the classical vanishing viscosity approach, to the conservation law with discontinuous flux for traffic flow.
In this paper we study existence and stability of shock profiles for a 1-D compressible Euler system in the context of Quantum Hydrodynamic models. The dispersive term is originated by the quantum effects described through the Bohm potential; moreover we introduce a (linear) viscosity to analyze its interplay with the former while proving existence, monotonicity and stability of travelling waves connecting a Lax shock for the underlying Euler system. The existence of monotone profiles is proved for sufficiently small shocks; while the case of large shocks leads to the (global) existence for an…
Under natural spectral stability assumptions motivated by previous investigations of the associated spectral stability problem, we determine sharp $L^p$ estimates on the linearized solution operator about a multidimensional planar periodic wave of a system of conservation laws with viscosity, yielding linearized $L^1\cap L^p\to L^p$ stability for all $p \ge 2$ and dimensions $d \ge 1$ and nonlinear $L^1\cap H^s\to L^p\cap H^s$ stability and $L^2$-asymptotic behavior for $p\ge 2$ and $d\ge 3$. The behavior can in general be rather complicated, involving both convective (i.e., wave-like) and dif…
We give an exhaustive characterization of singular weak solutions for ordinary differential equations of the form $\ddot{u}\,u + \frac{1}{2}\dot{u}^2 + F'(u) =0$, where $F$ is an analytic function. Our motivation stems from the fact that in the context of hydrodynamics several prominent equations are reducible to an equation of this form upon passing to a moving frame. We construct peaked and cusped waves, fronts with finite-time decay and compact solitary waves. We prove that one cannot obtain peaked and compactly supported traveling waves for the same equation. In particular, a peaked travel…
We consider the zero-electron-mass limit for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in unbounded spatial domains. Assuming smallness of the viscosity coefficient and ill-prepared initial data, we show that the asymptotic limit is represented by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a Brinkman damping, in the case when viscosity is proportional to the electron-mass, and by the incompressible Euler system provided the viscosity is dominated by the electron mass. The proof is based on the RAGE theorem and dispersive estimates for acoustic waves, and on the concept of suitable weak solutions for…
We consider the reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} u_t=u_{xx}+μ\left(\int_ΩM(y,z)u(t,x,z)dz-u\right) + u\left(a(y)-\int_ΩK(y,z) u(t,x,z)dz\right) , \end{equation*} where $ u=u(t,x,y) $ stands for the density of a theoretical population with a spatial ($x\in\mathbb R$) and phenotypic ($y\inΩ\subset \mathbb R^n$) structure, $ M(y,z) $ is a mutation kernel acting on the phenotypic space, $ a(y) $ is a fitness function and $ K(y,z) $ is a competition kernel. Using a vanishing viscosity method, we construct measure-valued traveling waves for this equation, and present particular cases wh…
We investigate the existence and properties of traveling waves for the Euler-Korteweg system with general capillarity and pressure. Our main result is the existence in dimension two of waves with arbitrarily small energy. They are obtained as minimizers of a modified energy with fixed momentum. The proof follows various ideas developed for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (and more generally nonlinear Schrödinger equations with non zero limit at infinity). Even in the Schrödinger case, the fact that we work with the hydrodynamical variables and a general pressure law both brings new difficulties …
We derive two systems of boundary-domain integral equations (BDIEs) equivalent to the Dirichlet problem for the compressible Stokes system using the potential method with an explicit parametrix (Levi function). The BDIEs are given in terms of surface and volume hydrodynamic potentials. We study the mapping properties of these integral potential operators and used them to prove existence and uniqueness of solution of the two systems of BDIEs obtained taking into account the non-trivial kernels of the single layer and hypersingular hydrodynamic surface potentials.
The hydrodynamic equations with quantum effects are studied in this paper. First we establish the global existence of smooth solutions with small initial data and then in the second part, we establish the convergence of the solutions of the quantum hydrodynamic equations to those of the classical hydrodynamic equations. The energy equation is considered in this paper, which added new difficulties to the energy estimates, especially to the selection of the appropriate Sobolev spaces.
In this paper, we study the global wellposedness of a radiation hydrodynamics model with viscosity and thermal conductivity. It is now well-understood that, unlike the compressible Euler equations whose smooth solutions must blow up in finite time no matter how small and how smooth the initial data is, the dissipative structure of such a radiation hydrodynamics model can indeed guarantee that its one-dimensional Cauchy problem admits a unique global smooth solution provided that the initial data is sufficiently small, while for large initial data, even if the heat conductivity is taken into ac…
In this paper, we present strong numerical evidences that the incompressible axisymmetric Euler equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients and smooth initial data of finite energy develop a potential finite-time locally self-similar singularity at the origin. An important feature of this potential singularity is that the solution develops a two-scale traveling wave that travels towards the origin. The two-scale feature is characterized by the scaling property that the center of the traveling wave is located at a ring of radius $O((T-t)^{1/2})$ surrounding the symmetry axis while the thic…
The injection and in-situ generation of foam in porous media successfully control gas mobility and improve the fluids' sweep efficiency inside porous media. Mathematical models describing this problem use two phases, foamed gas and fluid, and usually have a term for foam generation and destruction. Moreover, the non-Newtonian foam behavior is frequently modeled using the Hirasaki and Lawson's formula for foamed gas viscosity. In this paper, we detail how the traveling wave analysis can be used to estimate the propagation profiles and velocity for a range of non-Newtonian foam models in porous …
