We describe all the trees with the property that the corresponding edge ideal of the square of the tree has a linear resolution. As a consequence, we give a complete characterization of those trees $T$ for which the square is co-chordal, that is the complement of the square, $(T^2)^c$, is a chordal graph. For particular classes of trees such as paths and double brooms we determine the Krull dimension and the projective dimension.
In this paper, we study the Hankel edge ideals of graphs. We determine the minimal prime ideals of the Hankel edge ideal of labeled Hamiltonian and semi-Hamiltonian graphs, and we investigate radicality, being a complete intersection, almost complete intersection and set theoretic complete intersection for such graphs. We also consider the Hankel edge ideal of trees with a natural labeling, called rooted labeling. We characterize such trees whose Hankel edge ideal is a complete intersection, and moreover, we determine those whose initial ideal with respect to the reverse lexicographic order sa…
Cut ideals, introduced by Sturmfels and Sullivant, are used in phylogenetics and algebraic statistics. We study the minimal free resolutions of cut ideals of tree graphs. By employing basic methods from topological combinatorics, we obtain upper bounds for the Betti numbers of this type of ideals. These take the form of simple formulas on the number of vertices, which arise from the enumeration of induced subgraphs of certain incomparability graphs associated to the edge sets of trees.
Let $Γ$ be a rooted tree and let $t$ be a positive integer. We study algebraic invariants and properties of the path ideal generated by monomial corresponding to paths of length $(t-1)$ in $Γ$. In particular, we give a recursive formula to compute the graded Betti numbers, a general bound for the regularity, an explicit computation of the linear strand, and we characterize when this path ideal has a linear resolution.
We describe all the trees with the property that the corresponding edge ideal of their line graph has a linear resolution. As a consequence, we give a complete characterization of those trees $T$ for which the line graph $L(T)$ is co-chordal. We also compute the second Betti number of the edge ideal of $L(T)$ and we determine the number of cycles in $\overline{L(T)}$. As a consequence, we obtain also the first Zagreb index of a graph. For edge ideals of line graphs of caterpillar graphs we determine the Krull dimension, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and the projective dimension under som…
We survey some recent results on the minimal graded free resolution of a square-free monomial ideal. The theme uniting these results is the point-of-view that the generators of a monomial ideal correspond to the maximal faces (the facets) of a simplicial complex Δ.
The path ideal (of length t >=2) of a graph G is the monomial ideal, denoted I_t(G), whose generators correspond to the directed paths of length t in G. We study some of the algebraic properties of I_t(G) when G is a tree. We first show that I_t(G) is the facet ideal of a simplicial tree. As a consequence, the quotient ring R/I_t(G) is always sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, and the Betti numbers of R/I_t(G) do not depend upon the characteristic of the field. We study the case of the line graph in greater detail at the end of the paper.
We consider the phylogenetic tree model in which every node of the tree is observed and binary and the transitions are given by the same matrix on each edge of the tree. We are able to compute the Grobner basis and Markov basis of the toric ideal of invariants for trees with up to 11 nodes. These are perhaps the first non-trivial Grobner bases calculations in 2^11 indeterminates. We conjecture that there is a quadratic Grobner basis for binary trees. Finally, we give a explicit description of the polytope associated to this toric ideal for an infinite family of binary trees and conjecture that…
This paper uses dualities between facet ideal theory and Stanley-Reisner theory to show that the facet ideal of a simplicial tree is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. The proof involves showing that the Alexander dual (or the cover dual, as we call it here) of a simplicial tree is a componentwise linear ideal. We conclude with additional combinatorial properties of simplicial trees.
We explore resolutions of monomial ideals supported by simplicial trees. We argue that since simplicial trees are acyclic, the criterion of Bayer, Peeva and Sturmfels for checking if a simplicial complex supports a free resolution of a monomial ideal reduces to checking that certain induced subcomplexes are connected. We then use results of Peeva and Velasco to show that every simplicial tree appears as the Scarf complex of a monomial ideal, and hence supports a minimal resolution. We also provide a way to construct smaller Scarf ideals than those constructed by Peeva and Velasco.
Squarefree powers of edge ideals are intimately related to matchings of the underlying graph. In this paper we give bounds for the regularity of squarefree powers of edge ideals, and we consider the question of when such powers are linearly related or have linear resolution. We also consider the so-called squarefree Ratliff property.
We define a new combinatorial object, which we call a labeled hypergraph, uniquely associated to any square-free monomial ideal. We prove several upper bounds on the regularity of a square-free monomial ideal in terms of simple combinatorial properties of its labeled hypergraph. We also give specific formulas for the regularity of square-free monomial ideals with certain labeled hypergraphs. Furthermore, we prove results in the case of one-dimensional labeled hypergraphs.
We obtain an improved lower bound for the regularity of the binomial edge ideals of trees. We prove an upper bound for the regularity of the binomial edge ideals of certain subclass of block-graphs. As a consequence we obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for the regularity of binomial edge ideals of a class of trees called lobsters. We also obtain precise expressions for the regularities of binomial edge ideals of certain classes of trees and block graphs.
In this paper we study simplicial complexes as higher dimensional graphs in order to produce algebraic statements about their facet ideals. We introduce a large class of square-free monomial ideals with Cohen-Macaulay quotients, and a criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of facet ideals of simplicial trees. Along the way, we generalize several concepts from graph theory to simplicial complexes.
We study monomial ideals using the operation polarization to first turn them into square-free monomial ideals. We focus on monomial ideals whose polarization produce simplicial trees, and show that many of the properties of simplicial trees hold for such ideals. This includes Cohen-Macaulayness of the Rees ring, and being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. The appendix is an independent study of primary decomposition in a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay module. We demonstrate how every submodule appearing in the filtration of a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay module can be described in terms of the primary d…
Let $I$ be an ideal of a polynomial algebra $S$ over a field generated by square free monomials of degree $\geq d$. If $I$ contains more monomials of degree $d$ than $(n-d)/(n-d+1)$ of the total number of square free monomials of $S$ of degree $d+1$ then $\depth_SI\leq d$, in particular the Stanley's Conjecture holds in this case.
Well ordered covers of square-free monomial ideals are subsets of the minimal generating set ordered in a certain way that give rise to a Lyubeznik resolution for the ideal, and have guaranteed nonvanishing Betti numbers in certain degrees. This paper is about square-free monomial ideals which have a well ordered cover. We consider the question of subadditivity of syzygies of square-free monomial ideals via complements in the lcm lattice of the ideal, and examine how lattice complementation breaks well ordered covers of the ideal into (well ordered) covers of subideals. We also introduce a fam…
For a graph G, we construct two algebras, whose dimensions are both equal to the number of spanning trees of G. One of these algebras is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain monomial ideal, while the other is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain powers of linear forms. We describe the set of monomials that forms a linear basis in each of these two algebras. The basis elements correspond to G-parking functions that naturally came up in the abelian sandpile model. These ideals are instances of the general class of monotone monomial ideals and their deformations. We sh…

We show that for proving the Stanley conjecture, it is sufficient to consider a very special class of monomial ideals. These ideals (or rather their lcm lattices) are in bijection with the simplicial spanning trees of skeletons of a simplex. We apply this result to verify the Stanley conjecture for quotients of monomial ideals with up to six generators. For seven generators we obtain a partial result.
Let $I \subset K[x,y]$ be a monomial ideal. How small can $μ(I^2)$ be in terms of $μ(I)$? It has been expected that the inequality $μ(I^2) > μ(I)$ should hold whenever $μ(I) \ge 2$. Here we disprove this expectation and provide a somewhat surprising answer to the above question.
Let $I$ be a square-free monomial ideal $I$ of projective dimension one. Starting with the Taylor complex on the generators of $I^r$, we use Discrete Morse theory to describe a CW complex that supports a minimal free resolution of $I^r$. To do so, we concretely describe the acyclic matching on the faces of the Taylor complex.
Given a graph $G=(V, E)$, its generalized Laplacian matrix is given by \[ L(G,X_G)_{u,v}= \begin{cases} x_u&\text{if }u=v,\\ -m_{uv}&\text{if }u\neq v, \end{cases} \] where $X_G=\{x_u\, | \, u\in V(G)\}$ is a set of indeterminates and $m_{uv}$ is the number of edges between $u$ and $v$. The $j$-critical ideal of $G$ is the determinantal ideal generated by the minors of size $j$ of $L(G, X)$. A $2$-matching of $G$ is a subset $\mathcal{M}$ of its edges such that every vertex of $G$ has at most two incident edges in $\mathcal{M}$. We give a combinatorial description of a set of generators of the…
Let S be a polynomial algebra over a field. If I is the edge ideal of a perfect semiregular tree, then we give precise formulas for values of depth, Stanley depth, projective dimension, regularity and Krull dimension of S/I.
Let $I(G)^{[k]}$ denote the $k$th squarefree power of the edge ideal of $G$. When $G$ is a forest, we provide a sharp upper bound for the regularity of $I(G)^{[k]}$ in terms of the $k$-admissable matching number of $G$. For any positive integer $k$, we classify all forests $G$ such that $I(G)^{[k]}$ has linear resolution. We also give a combinatorial formula for the regularity of $I(G)^{[2]}$ for any forest $G$.
Assume that $G$ is a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$. For every integer $s\geq 1$, we denote the squarefree part of the $s$-th symbolic power of $I(G)$ by $I(G)^{\{s\}}$. We determine an upper bound for the regularity of $I(G)^{\{s\}}$ when $G$ is a chordal graph. If $G$ is a Cameron-Walker graphs, we compute ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{\{s\}}$ in terms of the induced matching number of $G$. Moreover, for any graph $G$, we provide sharp upper bounds for ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{\{2\}})$ and ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{\{3\}})$.
To a simplicial complex, we associate a square-free monomial ideal in the polynomial ring generated by its vertex set over a field. We study algebraic properties of this ideal via combinatorial properties of the simplicial complex. By generalizing the notion of a tree from graphs to simplicial complexes, we show that ideals associated to trees satisfy sliding depth condition, and therefore have normal and Cohen-Macaulay Rees rings. We also discuss connections with the theory of Stanley-Reisner rings.
UPGMA is a heuristic method identifying the least squares equidistant phylogenetic tree given empirical distance data among $n$ taxa. We study this classic algorithm using the geometry of the space of all equidistant trees with $n$ leaves, also known as the Bergman complex of the graphical matroid for the complete graph $K_n$. We show that UPGMA performs an orthogonal projection of the data onto a maximal cell of the Bergman complex. We also show that the equidistant tree with the least (Euclidean) distance from the data is obtained from such an orthogonal projection, but not necessarily given…
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over the field $\mathbb{K}$. Suppose that $\mathcal{C}$ is a chordal clutter with $n$ vertices and assume that the minimum edge cardinality of $\mathcal{C}$ is at least $d$. It is shown that $S/I(c_d(\mathcal{C}))$ satisfies Stanley's conjecture, where $I(c_d(\mathcal{C}))$ is the edge ideal of the $d$-complement of $\mathcal{C}$. This, in particular shows that $S/I$ satisfies Stanley's conjecture, where $I$ is a quadratic monomial ideal with linear resolution. We also define the notion of Sch…
Lower bounds are given for the depths of R/I^t for t at least one when I is the edge ideal of a tree or forest. The bounds are given in terms of the diameter of the tree, or in case of a forest, the largest diameter of a connected component and the number of connected components. These lower bounds provide a lower bound on the power for which the depths stabilize.
An ideal I in a Noetherian ring R is normally torsion-free if Ass(R/I^t)=Ass(R/I) for all natural numbers t. We develop a technique to inductively study normally torsion-free square-free monomial ideals. In particular, we show that if a square-free monomial ideal I is minimally not normally torsion-free then the least power t such that I^t has embedded primes is bigger than beta_1, where beta_1 is the monomial grade of I, which is equal to the matching number of the hypergraph H(I) associated to I. If in addition I fails to have the packing property, then embedded primes of I^t do occur when t…
In this paper we study the resolution of a facet ideal associated with a special class of simplicial complexes introduced by S. Faridi. These simplicial complexes are called trees, and are a generalization (to higher dimensions) of the concept of a tree in graph theory. We show that the Koszul homology of the facet ideal I of a tree is generated by the homology classes of monomial cycles, determine the projective dimension and the regularity of I if the tree is 1-dimensional, show that the graded Betti numbers of I satisfy an alternating sum property if the tree is connected in codimension 1, …
Let $S$ be a ring of polynomials in finitely many variables over a field. In this paper we give lower bounds for depth and Stanley depth of modules of the type $S/I^t$ for $t\geq1$, where $I$ is the edge ideal of some caterpillar and lobster trees. These new bounds are much sharper than the existing bounds for the classes of ideals we considered.

We introduce an efficient way, called Newton algorithm, to study arbitrary ideals in C[[x,y]], using a finite succession of Newton polygons. We codify most of the data of the algorithm in a useful combinatorial object, the Newton tree. For instance when the ideal is of finite codimension, invariants like integral closure and Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity were already combinatorially determined in the very special cases of monomial or non degenerate ideals, using the Newton polygon of the ideal. With our approach, we can generalize these results to arbitrary ideals. In particular the Rees valuati…
Assume that $G$ is a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$ and matching number ${\rm match}(G)$. For every integer $s\geq 1$, we denote the $s$-th squarefree power of $I(G)$ by $I(G)^{[s]}$. It is shown that for every positive integer $s\leq {\rm match}(G)$, the inequality ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{[s]})\leq {\rm match}(G)+s$ holds provided that $G$ belongs to either of the following classes: (i) very well-covered graphs, (ii) semi-Hamiltonian graphs, or (iii) sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graphs. Moreover, we prove that for every Cameron-Walker graph $G$ and for every positive integer $s\leq {\rm match}(G)$, we …
Let I=(x^{v_1},...,x^{v_q} be a square-free monomial ideal of a polynomial ring K[x_1,...,x_n] over an arbitrary field K and let A be the incidence matrix with column vectors {v_1},...,{v_q}. We will establish some connections between algebraic properties of certain graded algebras associated to I and combinatorial optimization properties of certain polyhedrons and clutters associated to A and I respectively. Some applications to Rees algebras and combinatorial optimization are presented. We study a conjecture of Conforti and Cornuéjols using an algebraic approach.
In this paper, we introduce techniques for producing normal square-free monomial ideals from old such ideals. These techniques are then used to investigate the normality of cover ideals under some graph operations. Square-free monomial ideals that come out as linear combinations of two normal ideals are shown to be not necessarily normal; under such a case we investigate the integral closedness of all powers of these ideals.
We derive two general bounds for the depths of powers of squarefree monomial ideals corresponding to hyperforests. These bounds generalize known bounds for the depths of squarefree monomial ideals, which were given in terms of the edgewise domination number of the corresponding hypergraphs and the lengths of initially regular sequences with respect to the ideals.
Given a square-free monomial ideal $I$, we define a simplicial complex labeled by the generators of $I^2$ which supports a free resolution of $I^2$. As a consequence, we obtain (sharp) upper bounds on the Betti numbers of the second power of any square-free monomial ideal.
Given a tree T on n vertices, there is an associated ideal I of a polynomial ring in n variables over a field, generated by all paths of a fixed length of T. We show that such an ideal always satisfies the Konig property and classify all trees for which R/I is Cohen-Macaulay. More generally, we show that an ideal I whose generators correspond to any collection of subtrees of T satisfies the Konig property. Since the edge ideal of a simplicial tree has this form, this generalizes a result of Faridi. Moreover, every square-free monomial ideal can be represented (non-uniquely) as a subtree ideal …
