In this paper, we introduce a new method to compute magnitude homology of general graphs. To each direct sum component of magnitude chain complexes, we assign a pair of simplicial complexes whose simplicial chain complex is isomorphic to it. First we states our main theorem specialized to trees, which gives another proof for the known fact that trees are diagonal. After that, we consider general graphs, which may have cycles. We also demonstrate some computation as an application.

In this article, we show that magnitude homology and path homology are closely related, and we give some applications. We define differentials ${\mathrm MH}^{\ell}_k(G) \longrightarrow {\mathrm MH}^{\ell-1}_{k-1}(G)$ between magnitude homologies of a digraph $G$, which make them chain complexes. Then we show that its homology ${\mathcal MH}^{\ell}_k(G)$ is non-trivial and homotopy invariant in the context of `homotopy theory of digraphs' developed by Grigor'yan--Muranov--S.-T. Yau et al (G-M-Ys in the following). It is remarkable that the diagonal part of our homology ${\mathcal MH}^{k}_k(G)$ …
We compute the component group of the derived $G$-geometric fixed points of the real topological Hochschild homology of a ring with anti-involution, where $G$ denotes the Galois group Gal($\mathbb{C}$/$\mathbb{R}$) of order 2.
We produce explicit geometric representatives of nontrivial homology classes in the space of long knots in R^d, when d is even. We generalize results of Cattaneo, Cotta-Ramusino and Longoni to define cycles which live off of the vanishing line of a homology spectral sequence due to Sinha. We use configuration space integrals to show our classes pair nontrivially with cohomology classes due to Longoni.
In this paper we give a geometric construction of the Borel equivariant (co)homology for spaces with a $G$-action, where $G$ is a compact Lie group with the property that the adjoint representation is orientable. A nice feature of these constructions is that there are corresponding Poincaré dual (co)homology theories called backwards (co)homology. This gives rise to a third relative (co)homology theory which we call stratifold Tate (co)homology. These Tate groups agree with the original definition of Tate cohomology for finite groups given by Swan. All constructions in this paper are geometric…
We compute magnitude homology of various graphs using algebraic Morse theory. Specifically, we (1) give an alternative proof that trees are diagonal, (2) identify a new class of diagonal graphs, (3) prove that the icosahedral graph is diagonal, and (4) compute the magnitude homology of cycles. These results answer several questions of Hepworth and Willerton [HW17].
We introduce an intrinsic filtration to the magnitude chain complex of a metric space, and study basic properties of the associated spectral sequence of the magnitude homology. As an application, the third magnitude homology of the circle is computed.
In this article, we study the magnitude homology of geodesic metric spaces of curvature $\leq κ$, especially ${\rm CAT}(κ)$ spaces. We will show that the magnitude homology $MH^{l}_{n}(X)$ of such a meric space $X$ vanishes for small $l$ and all $n > 0$. Conseqently, we can compute a total $\mathbb{Z}$-degree magnitude homology for small $l$ for the shperes $\mathbb{S}^{n}$, the Euclid spaces $\mathbb{E}^{n}$, the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{H}^{n}$, and real projective spaces $\mathbb{RP}^{n}$ with the standard metric. We also show that an existence of closed geodesic in a metric space guarant…
Fix a finite group G and an n-dimensional orthogonal G-representation V. We define the equivariant factorization homology of a V-framed smooth G-manifold with coefficients in an $E_V$-algebra using a two-sided bar construction, generalizing [And10, KM18]. This construction uses minimal categorical background and aims for maximal concreteness, allowing convenient proofs of key properties, including invariance of equivariant factorization homology under change of tangential structures. Using a geometrically-seen scanning map, we prove an equivariant version (eNPD) of the nonabelian Poincare dual…
Magnitude is a numerical invariant of enriched categories, including in particular metric spaces as $[0,\infty)$-enriched categories. We show that in many cases magnitude can be categorified to a homology theory for enriched categories, which we call magnitude homology (in fact, it is a special sort of Hochschild homology), whose graded Euler characteristic is the magnitude. Magnitude homology of metric spaces generalizes the Hepworth--Willerton magnitude homology of graphs, and detects geometric information such as convexity.
Geometric representations of cycles in quandle homology theory are given in terms of colored knot diagrams. Abstract knot diagrams are generalized to diagrams with exceptional points which, when colored, correspond to degenerate cycles. Bounding chains are realized, and used to obtain equivalence moves for homologous cycles. The methods are applied to prove that boundary homomorphisms in a homology exact sequence vanish.
We introduce several geometric notions, including the width of a homology class, to the theory of persistent homology. These ideas provide geometric interpretations of persistence diagrams. Indeed, we give quantitative and geometric descriptions of the "life span" or "persistence" of a homology class. As a case study, we analyze the power filtration on unweighted graphs, and provide explicit bounds for the life spans of homology classes in persistence diagrams in all dimensions.
We introduce the notion of partial presimplicial set and construct its geometric realization. We show that any semiadequate diagram yields a partial presimplicial set leading to a geometric realization of the almost-extreme Khovanov homology of the diagram. We give a concrete formula for the homotopy type of this geometric realization, involving wedge of spheres and a suspension of the projective plane.
We give a proof that the geometric K-homology theory for finite CW-complexes defined by Baum and Douglas is isomorphic to Kasparov's K-homology. The proof is a simplification of more elaborate arguments which deal with the geometric formulation of equivariant K-homology theory.
This paper studies the magnitude homology of graphs focusing mainly on the relationship between its diagonality and the girth. Magnitude and magnitude homology are formulations of the Euler characteristic and the corresponding homology, respectively, for finite metric spaces, first introduced by Leinster and Hepworth-Willerton. Several authors study them restricting to graphs with path metric, and some properties which are similar to the ordinary homology theory have come to light. However, the whole picture of their behavior is still unrevealed, and it is expected that they catch some geometr…
Given a cohomology theory, there is a well-known abstract way to define the dual homology theory using the theory of spectra. In [4] the author provides a more geometric construction of the homology theory, using a generalization of the bordism groups. Such a generalization involves in its definition the vector bundle modification, which is a particular case of the Gysin map. In this paper we provide a more natural variant of that construction, which replaces the vector bundle modification with the Gysin map itself, which is the natural push-forward in cohomology. We prove that the two constru…
Hepworth, Willerton, Leinster and Shulman introduced the magnitude homology groups for enriched categories, in particular, for metric spaces. The purpose of this paper is to describe the magnitude homology group of a metric space in terms of order complexes of posets. In a metric space, an interval (the set of points between two chosen points) has a natural poset structure, which is called the interval poset. Under additional assumptions on sizes of $4$-cuts, we show that the magnitude chain complex can be constructed using tensor products, direct sums and degree shifts from order complexes of…
We study twisted $Spin^c$-manifolds over a paracompact Hausdorff space $X$ with a twisting $α: X \to K(\ZZ, 3)$. We introduce the topological index and the analytical index on the bordism group of $α$-twisted $Spin^c$-manifolds over $(X, α)$, taking values in topological twisted K-homology and analytical twisted K-homology respectively. The main result of this paper is to establish the equality between the topological index and the analytical index. We also define a notion of geometric twisted K-homology, whose cycles are geometric cycles of $(X, \a)$ analogous to Baum-Douglas's geometric cycl…
Cohomology operations (including the cohomology ring) of a geometric object are finer algebraic invariants than the homology of it. In the literature, there exist various algorithms for computing the homology groups of simplicial complexes but concerning the algorithmic treatment of cohomology operations, very little is known. In this paper, we establish a version of the incremental algorithm for computing homology which saves algebraic information, allowing us the computation of the cup product and the effective evaluation of the primary and secondary cohomology operations on the cohomology o…
We construct a nerve functor parametrized by a choice of quantale, exhibiting both the Vietoris-Rips complex and the magnitude nerve as instances of this nerve for different choices of monoidal structure on $\mathbb{R}$. Furthermore, the difference between how persistent homology processes the Vietoris-Rips complex and how magnitude homology processes the magnitude nerve is cast as a choice of whether or not to "localize" the corresponding nerves along $\mathbb{R}$ in a precise sense. Lastly, we mention some application-oriented observations naturally suggested by the perspective mentioned abo…
The theories in our zoo are all bordism groups, which generalize the case of smooth manifolds by allowing singularities. There are many concepts of manifolds with singularities one could use here. For our pupose the objects the author introduced some years ago, which are called stratifolds, work particularly well. The zoo comes from forcing certain strata indexed by the subset $A$ to be empty. Special cases are ordinary singular homology and singular bordism. Despite their simple construction computations of these groups seem to be very complicated. We give a few simple examples. Thus there ar…
In this paper we introduce the persistent magnitude, a new numerical invariant of (sufficiently nice) graded persistence modules. It is a weighted and signed count of the bars of the persistence module, in which a bar of the form $[a,b)$ in degree $d$ is counted with weight $(e^{-a}-e^{-b})$ and sign $(-1)^d$. Persistent magnitude has good formal properties, such as additivity with respect to exact sequences and compatibility with tensor products, and has interpretations in terms of both the associated graded functor, and the Laplace transform. Our definition is inspired by Otter's notion of b…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a version of singular homology based on smooth mappings of manifolds with corners. Although variants of such a theory exists in the literature, we felt that certain points were not adequately addressed. In particular, our goal is to construct a chain level theory based on smooth mappings of manifolds with corners. In addition, we will avoid using the fact that smooth manifolds with can be triangulated. As we shall see, transversality and intersections play a major role in setting up this theory. From a pedagogical viewpoint, having intersection theory …
The aim of this paper is to give the geometric realization of regular path complexes via (co)homology groups with coefficients in a ring $R$. Concretely, for each regular path complex $P$, we associate it with a singular $Δ$-complex $S(P)$ and show that the (co)homology groups of $P$ are isomorphic to those of $S(P)$ with coefficients in $R$. As a direct result we recognize path (co)homology as Hochschild (co)homology in case that $R$ is commutative and $P$ regular finite. Analogues of the Eilenberg-Zilber theorem and Künneth formula are also showed for the Cartesian product and the join of tw…
We introduce the notion of the space of parallel strings with partially summable labels, which can be viewed as a geometrically constructed group completion of the space of particles with labels. We utilize this to construct a machinery which produces equivariant generalized homology theories from such simple and abundant data as partial monoids.
In this paper we present several algorithms related with the computation of the homology of groups, from a geometric perspective (that is to say, carrying out the calculations by means of simplicial sets and using techniques of Algebraic Topology). More concretely, we have developed some algorithms which, making use of the effective homology method, construct the homology groups of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces K(G,1) for different groups G, allowing one in particular to determine the homology groups of G. Our algorithms have been programmed as new modules for the Kenzo system, enhancing it with th…
Persistent homology is a powerful tool for characterizing the topology of a data set at various geometric scales. When applied to the description of molecular structures, persistent homology can capture the multiscale geometric features and reveal certain interaction patterns in terms of topological invariants. However, in addition to the geometric information, there is a wide variety of non-geometric information of molecular structures, such as element types, atomic partial charges, atomic pairwise interactions, and electrostatic potential function, that is not described by persistent homolog…
Quantification and classification of protein structures, such as knotted proteins, often requires noise-free and complete data. Here we develop a mathematical pipeline that systematically analyzes protein structures. We showcase this geometric framework on proteins forming open-ended trefoil knots, and we demonstrate that the mathematical tool, persistent homology, faithfully represents their structural homology. This topological pipeline identifies important geometric features of protein entanglement and clusters the space of trefoil proteins according to their depth. Persistence landscapes q…
Generalizing work of Doi and of Idrissi, we define a coHochschild homology theory for chain coalgebras over any commutative ring and prove its naturality with respect to morphisms of chain coalgebras up to strong homotopy. As a consequence we obtain that if the comultiplication of a chain coalgebra $C$ is itself a morphism of chain coalgebras up to strong homotopy, then the coHochschild complex $\cohoch (C)$ admits a natural comultiplicative structure. In particular, if $K$ is a reduced simplicial set and $C_{*}K$ is its normalized chain complex, then $\cohoch (C_{*}K)$ is naturally a homotopy…

Consider the space of continuous functions on a geometric tree $X$ whose persistent homology gives rise to a finite generic barcode $D$. We show that there are exactly as many path connected components in this space as there are merge trees whose barcode is $D$. We find that each component is homotopy equivalent to a configuration space on $X$ with specialized constraints encoded by the merge tree. For barcodes $D$ with either one or two intervals, our method also allows us to compute the homotopy type of this space of functions.
We develop a framework to construct geometric representations of finite groups $G$ through the correspondence between real toric spaces $X^{\mathbb R}$ and simplicial complexes with characteristic matrices. We give a combinatorial description of the $G$-module structure of the homology of $X^{\mathbb R}$. As applications, we make explicit computations of the Weyl group representations on the homology of real toric varieties associated to the Weyl chambers of type $A$ and $B$, which show an interesting connection to the topology of posets. We also realize a certain kind of Foulkes representatio…
