We give a proof that the geometric K-homology theory for finite CW-complexes defined by Baum and Douglas is isomorphic to Kasparov's K-homology. The proof is a simplification of more elaborate arguments which deal with the geometric formulation of equivariant K-homology theory.
We give a sufficient and necessary condition of the fundamental group homomorphism of a map between manifolds to induce homology equivalences. Moreover, a classification of one-sided h-cobordism of manifolds up to diffeomorphisms is obtained, based on Quillen's plus construction with Whitehead torsions.
Working with group homomorphisms, a construction of manifolds is introduced to preserve homology groups. The construction gives as special cases Qullien's plus construction with handles obtained by Hausmann, the existence of one-sided $h$-cobordism of Guilbault and Tinsley, the existence of homology spheres and higher-dimensional knots proved by Karvaire. We also use it to get counter-examples to the zero-in-the-spectrum conjecture found by Farber-Weinberger, and by Higson-Roe-Schick.
Let $Q$ denote MacLane's $Q$-construction, and $\otimes$ denote the smash product of spectra. In this paper we construct an equivalence $Q(R)\simeq \mathbb Z\otimes R$ in the category of $A_\infty$ ring spectra for any ring $R$, thus proving a conjecture made by Fiedorowicz, Schwänzl, Vogt and Waldhausen in "MacLane homology and topological Hochschild homology". More precisely, we construct is a symmetric monoidal structure on $Q$ (in the $\infty$-categorical sense) extending the usual monoidal structure, for which we prove an equivalence $Q(-)\simeq \mathbb Z\otimes -$ as symmetric monoidal f…
We investigate the homology of ample Hausdorff groupoids. We establish that a number of notions of equivalence of groupoids appearing in the literature coincide for ample Hausdorff groupoids, and deduce that they all preserve groupoid homology. We compute the homology of a Deaconu{Renault groupoid associated to k pairwisecommuting local homeomorphisms of a zero-dimensional space, and show that Matui's HK conjecture holds for such a groupoid when k is one or two. We specialise to k-graph groupoids, and show that their homology can be computed in terms of the adjacency matrices, using a chain co…
We give a new formula for real topological cyclic homology that refines the fiber sequence formula discovered by Nikolaus and Scholze for topological cyclic homology to one involving genuine $C_2$-spectra. To accomplish this, we give a new definition of the $\infty$-category of real cyclotomic spectra that replaces the usage of genuinely equivariant dihedral spectra with the parametrized Tate construction. We then define an $\infty$-categorical version of Høgenhaven's O(2)-orthogonal cyclotomic spectra, construct a forgetful functor relating the two theories, and show that this functor restric…
Twisted $K$-homology corresponds to $D$-branes in string theory. In this paper we compare two different models of geometric twisted $K$-homology and get their equivalence. Moreover, we give another description of geometric twisted $K$-homology using bundle gerbes. We establish some properties of geometric twisted $K$-homology. In the last part we construct $T$-duality isomorphism for geometric twisted $K$-homology.
Let A be a commutative ring, and \a a weakly proregular ideal in A. This includes the noetherian case: if A is noetherian then any ideal in it is weakly proregular; but there are other interesting examples. In this paper we prove the MGM equivalence, which is an equivalence between the category of cohomologically \a-adically complete complexes and the category of cohomologically \a-torsion complexes. These are triangulated subcategories of the derived category of A-modules. Our work extends earlier work by Alonso- Jeremias-Lipman, Schenzel and Dwyer-Greenlees.
We study the Hochschild homology and cohomology of curved A-infinity algebras that arise in the study of Landau-Ginzburg (LG) models in physics. We show that the ordinary Hochschild homology and cohomology of these algebras vanish. To correct this we introduce modified versions of these theories, Borel-Moore Hochschild homology and compactly supported Hochschild cohomology. For LG models the new invariants yield the answer predicted by physics, shifts of the Jacobian ring. We also study the relationship between graded LG models and the geometry of hypersurfaces. We prove that Orlov's derived e…
Given a henselian pair $(R, I)$ of commutative rings, we show that the relative $K$-theory and relative topological cyclic homology with finite coefficients are identified via the cyclotomic trace $K \to \mathrm{TC}$. This yields a generalization of the classical Gabber-Gillet-Thomason-Suslin rigidity theorem (for mod $n$ coefficients, with $n$ invertible in $R$) and McCarthy's theorem on relative $K$-theory (when $I$ is nilpotent). We deduce that the cyclotomic trace is an equivalence in large degrees between $p$-adic $K$-theory and topological cyclic homology for a large class of $p$-adic ri…
We study twisted $Spin^c$-manifolds over a paracompact Hausdorff space $X$ with a twisting $α: X \to K(\ZZ, 3)$. We introduce the topological index and the analytical index on the bordism group of $α$-twisted $Spin^c$-manifolds over $(X, α)$, taking values in topological twisted K-homology and analytical twisted K-homology respectively. The main result of this paper is to establish the equality between the topological index and the analytical index. We also define a notion of geometric twisted K-homology, whose cycles are geometric cycles of $(X, \a)$ analogous to Baum-Douglas's geometric cycl…
Using the unbounded picture of analytical K-homology, we associate a well-defined K-homology class to an unbounded symmetric operator satisfying certain mild technical conditions. We also establish an ``addition formula'' for the Dirac operator on the circle and for the Dolbeault operator on closed surfaces. Two proofs are provided, one using topology and the other one, surprisingly involved, sticking to analysis, on the basis of the previous result. As a second application, we construct, in a purely analytical language, various homomorphisms linking the homology of a group in low degree, the …
Let $V$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with fraction field $F$ of characteristic zero and with residue field $\mathbb{F}$. We introduce analytic cyclic homology of complete torsion-free bornological algebras over $V$. We prove that it is homotopy invariant, stable, invariant under certain nilpotent extensions, and satisfies excision. We use these properties to compute it for tensor products with dagger completions of Leavitt path algebras. If $R$ is a smooth commutative $V$-algebra of relative dimension $1$, then we identify its analytic cyclic homology with Berthelot's rigid cohomology…
We introduce techniques of Suslin, Voevodsky, and others into the study of singular varieties. Our approach is modeled after Goresky-MacPherson intersection homology. We provide a formulation of perversity cycle spaces leading to perversity homology theory and a companion perversity cohomology theory based upon generalized cocycle spaces. These theories lead to conditions on pairs of cycles which can be intersected and a suitable equivalence relation on cocycles/cycles enabling pairings on equivalence classes. We establish suspension and splitting theorems, as well as a localization property. …
We discuss the analytic aspects of the geometric model for $K$-homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ constructed in "Geometric K-homology with coefficients I". In particular, using results of Rosenberg and Schochet, we construct a map from this geometric model to its analytic counterpart. Moreover, we show that this map is an isomorphism in the case of a finite CW-complex. The relationship between this map and the Freed-Melrose index theorem is also discussed. Many of these results are analogous to those of Baum and Douglas in the case of $spin^c$ manifolds, geometric K-homolo…
A geometric model for twisted $K$-homology is introduced. It is modeled after the Mathai-Melrose-Singer fractional analytic index theorem in the same way as the Baum-Douglas model of $K$-homology was modeled after the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. A natural transformation from twisted geometric $K$-homology to the new geometric model is constructed. The analytic assembly mapping to analytic twisted $K$-homology in this model is an isomorphism for torsion twists on a finite CW-complex. For a general twist on a smooth manifold the analytic assembly mapping is a surjection. Beyond the aforemention…
